Frances Whisnant
High Point - Mrs. Frances Shehan Whisnant, 79, of 1301 Foust Ave. died Oct. 4, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital following one year of declining health.
She was born Oct. 1, 1920, in Caldwell County, a daughter of Jim and Mary Collins Shehan. A resident of High Point since 1966, she retired from Lewis Cleaners and was a member of King’s Way Baptist Church. In 1934, she married Bonson Joseph Whisnant, who preceded her in death in December 1995. She also was preceded in death by six sons, Leonard Whisnant, Ray Whisnant, Roy Whisnant, Tex Whisnant, Tom Whisnant and Dewey Whisnant; one daughter, Sheila Ann Adams; and three grandchildren, Jerry Whisnant, Teresa Anderson and Jeffrey Wheatley.
Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. James (Christine) Wheatley of Archdale, Mrs. Junior (Mary) Anderson of Lenoir, Mrs. Mike (Kathy) Liner of Archdale, Mrs. Bill (Hazel) Hazelton of Kernersville and Mrs. Dennis (Regina) Horner of Clarksburg, W.Va.; one son, Kenneth Whisnant of Lenoir; one sister, Mrs. Eva Craig of High Point; 19 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale by the Rev. Chester Pope and the Rev. Bobby L. Loving. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Paul Younts
High Point - Paul Levi Younts, 81, of 506 W. Fairfield Road died Oct. 5, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born June 14, 1918, in Davidson County, a son of Pleasant Irvin and Molly Hedrick Younts. He graduated from Allen Jay High School in 1936 and attended High Point University. In 1982, he retired from the High Point Postal Service and was past president of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was a charter member of the Archdale Lions Club and former board member of Habitat for Humanity. He volunteered for the Fathers Table for 12 years and for Hospice of the Piedmont for 14 years. He was a member of the Happy Tones at the Roy Culler Senior Center and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of First Reformed United Church of Christ, where he served as president of the Men’s Sunday School Class and was a member of the choir. On Sept. 6, 1941, he married Helen Dobbins, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Joanna Alspaugh and her husband, Randall of Thomasville; two sons, Jeffrey A. Younts and his wife, Frankie, of Archdale and Jerry N. Younts and his wife, Lisa, of Charlotte; four sisters, Mrs. Zeffle Leonard and Mrs. Mae Frank, both of Lexington, Mrs. Virgie Harrington of High Point and Mrs. Irene Smith of Archdale; seven grandchildren, Brandon Shipwash and his wife, Yesenia, Brooke Shipwash, Neal Younts, Steve Younts, Justin Younts, Jake Younts and Ashley Alspaugh; and two great-grandchildren, Yajhaira Lucio and David Riveria.
Memorial service will be 7 p.m. Thursday at First Reformed United Church of Christ by the Rev. Donald L Stevenson.

James Connolly Jr.
Greensboro - James Francis “Jimmy” Connolly Jr., 35, of 5856 Old Oak Ridge Road died Oct. 5, 1999, at his residence.
He was a lifelong resident of Greensboro, where he graduated from Grimsley Senior High School. He attended Lander College and was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church. He worked as a regional sales manager for Pro Mulch Inc.
Surviving are his wife, Celeste Woodard Connolly; his mother, Lorraine Q. Connolly of Greensboro; four brothers, Mark and John Connolly of Greensboro, Matthew Connolly of Rocky Mount and Luke Connolly of Charlotte; a sister, Claire L. Swiggett of Greensboro; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and in-laws. He was preceded in death by his father, James F. Connolly Sr.
A funeral Mass will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church. Inurnment will be in Green Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be at the family home, 423 Crestland Avenue, following the inurnment.
Memorials may be directed to Wesleyan Arms Retirement Center, 1901 N. Centennial St., High Point, N.C. 27262.

Crawford LeGrande
High Point - Crawford LeGrande, 76, of 1317 Boundary Ave. died Oct. 6, 1999, at his residence.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Haizlip Funeral Home.

Gregory Pettrey
Thomasville - Gregory Blake “Greg” Pettrey, 47, of 736 Salem St., Apt. 7, died Oct. 5, 1999.
He was born Sept. 9, 1952, in Guilford County, a son of Claude and Aileen Stroud Pettrey. He had lived most of his life in this area and was of the Methodist faith.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Shirley Pettrey of Thomasville; his father of the home; three sisters, Mrs. Peggy Barnett Rogers of Asheboro, Mrs. Angelia Pettrey Pollard of Trinity and Mrs. Melanie Pettrey Adkins of High Point; and two brothers, Robert “Bob” Barnett of Asheboro and Timothy Pettrey of Cedar Grove. He was preceded in death by his mother and a daughter, Jennifer Hope Pettrey.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday in Holly Hill Memorial Park by the Rev. Paul L. McClure. Visitation will be at the residence.
Memorials may be directed to Welch Memorial United Methodist Church, 2405 Bellemeade St., High Point, N.C. 27263.

Charles Ward
High Point - Charles Joseph Ward, 68, died Oct. 6, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Aug. 12, 1931, in Guilford County, a son of David Otis and Jessie Windham Ward. He was a lifelong High Point resident and retired from Vermont American Tool Co. He also had worked part-time at Market Square. He was a member of Parkwood Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving in the Korean conflict, and attained the rank of staff sergeant.
He also was a member of the Junior Order United American Mechanics Trophy Council No. 29, past state counselor and member of State Counselor’s Club, and past counselor of Trophy No. 29 Council. He had served on the board of directors of the American Children’s Home and was a member of High Point Elks Lodge No. 1155. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Charles Richard “Ricky” Ward, in 1993. On Dec. 15, 1950, he married the former Lorene Kivett, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are a daughter, Kathy Ward Hardee and her husband, Ken, of Fuquay-Varina; a daughter-in-law, Tamara Kemp Ward of High Point; a grandson, Joseph Thomas Ward; a sister, Valoree Ward Holder and her husband, Roy E., of Boone; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Parkwood Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert E. Williams. Entombment will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point.
Pallbearers will be: Gerald Winfrey, Vernon Walters, Gene Duckworth, Ronald Hurlocker, Mike Windham, Charles Riehs, Maurice Mabe and Steve Davis. Honorary pallbearers will be council members of the Junior Order United American Mechanics and members of High Point Elks Lodge No. 1155.
Memorials may be directed to Parkwood Baptist Church, 2107 Penny Road, High Point, N.C. 27265 or to the American Children’s Home, P.O. Box 1288, Lexington, N.C. 27293.

Anita Arrington
Charlotte - Mrs. Anita Ann (Harris) Arrington, 36, of 534 Spratt St. died Oct. 2, 1999, at Carolina Medical Center.
She was born Dec. 25, 1962, in High Point, a daughter of James C. and Ernestine White Harris. She was an industrial laborer with Ace Staffing. She attended schools in Guilford County and was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Remel Steele White.
Surviving are a daughter, Miss Nicole Terese Harris; her parents; a brother, Michael Goins; three sisters, Miss Sharon D. Harris, Mrs. Renita (Jeremy) Martin and Mrs. Verdetta (Billy Jr.) Collins; her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Gaffney; four aunts, Emogene Black of Detroit, Catherine White of Cincinnati, Jeraldine White of Philadelphia and Carolyn Jackson Brockington of High Point; three uncles, Joseph R. White, Michael Jackson and Keith Jackson, all of High Point; four nephews; special friends, Brown Thomasson, Sharon Anderson and Paul Steele; and a host of other cousins and other relatives.
Funeral will be 4 p.m. Saturday at Hargett-Gilmore Funeral Service. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be 3:30 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Macy Beck
Lexington - Mrs. Macy McCaskill Beck of 195 Fisher St. died at 10 p.m. Oct. 6, 1999, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center after declining health of one and a half years.
Funeral will be 4 p.m. Saturday at Davidson Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Crawford LeGrande
High Point - Crawford LeGrande, 76, of 1317 Boundary Ave. died Oct. 6, 1999, at his residence.
He was born in High Point, a son of John Henry and Hattie Leak LeGrande. He was a lifetime resident of High Point. He was a graduate of William Penn High School, class of ‘42, and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II. He was formerly employed as a photo finisher at Alderman’s Studio, BBS Studio and Norling Studio. He also was formerly employed with Durham Life Insurance Co. and United Family Life Insurance Co. He was a tax consultant and a self-employed plasterer. He was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church, United Methodist Men, a former member of the gospel choir and male chorus, and served on the pastor-parish relations committee. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Velvet LeGrande.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Willie Lois Byrd LeGrande of the home; two sons, Michael E. LeGrande of the home and Gordon W. LeGrande and his wife, Louise, of Greensboro; three daughters, Mrs. Phyllis L. Brown, Ms. Kathy M. LeGrande and Mrs. Saundra L. Boyd and her husband, Rodney, all of High Point; one sister, Mrs. Helen L. Wilson of Wilmington, Del.; six grandchildren, Michelle, Tony, Vanita, Darrick, Michael Jr., and Sydney; two great-grandchildren, Chasity and Taj; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Ida LeGrande of High Point; two brothers-in-law, Richard Byrd and his wife, Dorothy, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Carl Van Gray of Baltimore, Md.; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Memorial United Methodist Church by Dr. James H. Graves. Burial will be in Carolina Biblical Gardens. Visitation will be 7-8 tonight at Haizlip Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Worth Russell
Thomasville - Worth Homer Russell, 70, of 475 Fairgrove Road died at 11:50 a.m. Oct. 6, 1999, at his residence.
He was born May 9, 1929, in Davidson County, a son of Dock F. and Mattie Leona Briles Russell. He was a lifelong resident of Davidson County and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict. He was former owner and operator of Gateway Mobile Station and had retired from Hatteras Yacht in High Point. He was of the Baptist faith. On Sept. 2, 1951, he married Miss Jacqueline Pritchett, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Dennis (Jan) Foley of Camp Hill, Pa.; three brothers, Roy Russell, James Paul Russell and Gary Michael Russell, all of Thomasville; a half-sister, Mrs. Nita Carpenter of High Point; a granddaughter, Miss Armando (Rebecca) Contreras; and three great-grandchildren, Miss Vivian Contreras, Victor Contreras and Miss Haley Flores.
Private graveside services were held in Holly Hill Memorial Park by the Rev. John Wheeles.

Mary Sykes
Kernersville - Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Gatewood Sykes, 79, of 2213 Sandy Ridge Road, High Point, died Oct. 6, 1999, at Moses Cone Hospital.
She was a daughter of the Rev. James C. and Lillian Raleigh Gatewood. She was a librarian at John Wesley College and an active member of Sandy Ridge United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Women’s Society. She was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Krehel.
Surviving are a son, Charlie R. Sykes Jr. and his wife, Lynn, of High Point; two daughters, Stephanie Dillon and her husband, Steve, of High Point and Mary S. Buchanan of Sedgefield; a brother, James Gatewood of Trinity; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was a loving mother.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Sandy Ridge United Methodist Church by the Rev. Wes Craven and the Rev. Kenneth Clegg. Burial will be in Sandy Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home.
Memorials may be directed to Sandy Ridge United Methodist Church, 2223 Sandy Ridge Road, High Point, N.C. 27265 and to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Drive, High Point, N.C. 27262.

Clyde Hege
Lexington - Clyde Matthew Hege, 86, of 908 Friendship Church Road died Oct. 10. 1999, at the Centerclair Nursing Home.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Davidson Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home and at other times at the home.
