Mary Byrd
Lexington - Mary Elizabeth Deaton Byrd, 80, of 291 Sunset Drive died July 8, 2000.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lexington City Cemetery. The family will be at Piedmont Funeral Home 6:30-8:30 tonight and other times at the home of a son, Jim Byrd, 378 Sunset Drive.

Muzzette King
Archdale - Mrs. Muzzette Keith King, 49, of 1609 Greendale Road died July 8, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born April 8, 1951, in Wythe County, Va., a daughter of the James Junior Keith and Iva Jewel Nunn Keith, who survives of Sophia. On June 6, 1972, she married Ernie Shelton King, who survives of the home. She was preceded in death by her father.
Other survivors include sons, Matthew Daniel King of the home, Edward Jackson Durham of Morehead City; a daughter, Tina Jewel King Adkins of Winston-Salem; and two sisters, Charlotte Keith and Frances Bartlette, both of Sophia.
A memorial service will be conducted 6 p.m. today at Harvest Community Church in Winston-Salem by the Rev. Jerry Campbell.
Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, is assisting the King family.

Shuford Swing
Lexington - Shuford Monroe Swing, 90, of Centerclair Nursing Home died July 8, 2000, at the nursing home.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at New Friendship United Church of Christ. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 1-2 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

T. R. Carmichael
High Point - T.R. Carmichael, 94, formerly of Deep River Road, died July 1, 2000, in Sunbridge of the Triad in High Point.
He was born in Davidson County on Nov. 1, 1905, a son of John P. and Martha Jane Moore Carmichael. He had been a lifelong resident of High Point and retired from W.A. Davis Milling Co. in November 1974, with 52 years of service. He later worked with the Greensboro Auto Auction for 15 years. He was a charter member of Montlieu Avenue United Methodist Church and the Ivey Fellowship Class. He served on several church boards. On Oct. 12, 1929, he married the former Mae Herman who preceded him in death on Nov. 8, 1999.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn C. and Harold Coble of High Point; two sons and daughters-in-law, David L. and Bettie Carmichael of Raleigh and Roger S. and Linda Carmichael of Kernersville; three sisters, Mrs. Bessie Lohr and Mrs. Viola Rose of Beaufort, N.C., and Mrs. Stella Siler of Houston, Texas; 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday in Montlieu Avenue United Methodist Church by Rev. Jim Martin Sr. and Rev. Nathan Snider. Entombment will follow from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Sechrest Funeral Service on E. Lexington Avenue.
Memorials may be directed to Montlieu Avenue Methodist Church, 1210 Montlieu Avenue, High Point, N.C. 27262 or to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Drive, High Point, NC 27262.

Early Farrar
Stokesdale - Early L. 'Red' Farrar, 91, died peacefully June 30, 2000, at the Countryside Manor Nursing Home.
He was born Oct. 2, 1908 in Rockingham County, the son of William and Lula Lemons Farrar. He was a former resident of High Point and was employed by Durham Life Insurance for 40 years. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. He served as a post commander of the American Legion Post No. 0087 in High Point and was a member of Piedmont Lodge #681 A.F. & A.M., a life member of BPO Elks, USA, High Point Lodge No. 1155 and was a member of Green Street Baptist Church. He was married to the former Madeline Causey, who preceded him in death in 1982.
Surviving are two brothers, Marvin Farrar and his wife Kathleen, and Raymond Farrar, both of Greensboro; three sisters, Notra Stoner, Nannie Lovette and Ruth Smith and her husband, Wilbur, all of Stokesdale; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point with the Rev. Karen Jenkins officiating. Visitation will be Monday afternoon at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Interment will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to Green Street Baptist Church, 303 N. Rotary Drive, High Point, N.C. 27262.

Thomas Glenn
Lexington - Thomas E. Glenn, 17, of Briggstown Road died June 30, 2000 at Lexington Memorial Hospital.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Lexington Chapel of Davidson Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Dolen Hedrick
High Point - J. Dolen Hedrick, 86, of the Presbyterian Home, Apartment 42, formerly of Ferndale Boulevard, died July 1, 2000.
He was born June 18, 1914, in High Point, a son of Early Roscoe and Nell Sexton Hedrick, He had lived his entire life in High Point and graduated from High Point Central High School. He was a manufacturer's representative and worked for 42 years with U.S. Furniture Industries, selling in South Carolina. He retired in 1989. He was also a former basketball and football official in the North State, Southern and Atlantic Coast Conference. He was a veteran of World War II, having served as a captain in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the Physical Training Division. He was a member of First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, trustee and a superintendent of the adult Sunday school departments and served on many church-wide committees. In 1940, he married Nell Holton, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are one daughter, Kay Hedrick Curlee and husband, Jim, of Southern Pines; two sons, John Dolen Hedrick Jr., and wife, Vicki, of Atlanta, and Robert H. Hedrick and wife, Diane, of Greensboro; grandchildren, Bill James of Charlotte, Emily James Patterson and husband, Jay, of Durham, John Dolen Hedrick III, and James M. Hedrick, both of Atlanta, Ga.; step-grandchildren, Keith Curlee and wife, Page, of High Point, Carrie Curlee Johnson and husband, Michael, of Raleigh, Lissa Curlee of Raleigh and Patrick Buchanan of Reston, Va.; great-grandchildren, Hanna and Cooper Patterson; step-great-grandchildren, Milly, Wade and Hunter Curlee, Sam and Ben Johnson; sisters, Bessie H. Simeon and husband, A.J. (Tony), Betty H. Knox and husband, Eddie; brothers, Charles Hedrick and wife, Nancy, and Clyde Hedrick and wife, Lena; sister-in-law, Juanita Hedrick of Wilmington.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday in First Baptist Church by Dr. William Slater. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. The body will remain at Sechrest Funeral Home until placed in the church 30 minutes before the funeral. The family will receive friends at Sechrest tonight from 7-8:30 and other times at the residence. Pallbearers will be grandsons and honorary pallbearers will be trustees of the church.

Robert Shelton
Asheboro - The Rev. Robert Douglas 'Buck' Shelton, 67, died June 30, 2000.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Ulah Church of God. Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. today at Ridge Funeral Home.

Homer Varner
Denton - Marvin Homer Varner, 84, of Ridges Mountain Road died July 1, 2000, after declining in health for several months.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Briggs Funeral Home in Denton. The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday at Briggs Funeral Home.

Janice Atchison
High Point - Ms. Janice Marie Atchison, 52, of High Point died July 3, 2000, at her residence.
She was born Oct. 18, 1947, in Guilford County, a daughter of Cecil V. and Thelma Tucker Atchison. She had been a resident of the High Point area most of her life and was employed by Alderman Studios. She attended First Wesleyan Church.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by one brother, Jack D. Atchison, and one sister, Verna Atchison Atkins.
She is survived by one son, Bryant 'Ted' Blakely and his wife, Shavonne, of High Point; her mother, Mrs. Thelma T. Atchison of Greensboro; two granddaughters, Joyanna Blakely and Savannah Blakely; two sisters, Sarah Eaton of Greensboro and Nancy Beeson of Monroe; two brothers, Larry Atchison of Greensboro and Marvin Atchison of Colfax; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial service will be 7 p.m. Thursday at the Chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point. Visitation will follow the service at the funeral home. A private graveside service will be held Friday.
Memorials may be directed to First Wesleyan Church, 1915 N. Centennial St., High Point, N.C. 27262 or to the Humane Society of Guilford County, 4527 W. Wendover Ave., Greensboro, N.C. 27409.

Samuel Davis
Salisbury - Samuel Albert Davis, 86, formerly of Hillside Drive, Lexington, died at 11:05 a.m. July 4, 2000, at Genesis Health Care.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Forest Hill Memorial Park. Visitation will be at the home on Hillside Drive. Davidson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

H. Johnson Sr.
Jamestown - Herbert C. Johnson Sr., 86, of Maxine Drive died July 3, 2000, at Wesley Long Nursing Center following a lengthy illness.
He was born Dec. 29, 1913, in Glen Raven, a son of Marvin Johnson and Tessie Williams Archer. He was formerly employed as an insurance salesman with Charlotte Liberty Mutual Life Insurance Co. He was a member of the First Pentecostal Holiness Church in High Point, where he served as a Sunday school teacher, elder and lay minister. He was preceded in death by a brother, Marvin Johnson, and a sister, Mary Barnes.
Surviving are his wife, Opal Suits Johnson, of the home; one daughter, Patricia Jessup and her husband, Jimmy, of Greensboro; one son, Herbert C. Johnson Jr. and his wife, Vivian, of Bellamy, Ala.; three half sisters, Ruby Phillips of Quantico, Va., Virginia Evans of Arlington, Va., and Grace Shipton of High Point; four grandchildren, Dennis Jessup of Oak Ridge, Norma Jean Wall of High Point, Leigh Lovette of Toxy, Ala., and Cherish Johnson of Bellamy; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Harold C. Davis Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Ronald Carpenter. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.
Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association.

Mildred Nerren
High Point - Mrs. Mildred Arnold Nerren, 88, of Wesleyan Arms Nursing Home died July 4, 2000, following an illness.
She was born Oct. 4, 1911, a daughter of Zeb and Ressie Mabe. She was a former member of Brentwood Presbyterian Church in High Point. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Nerren; one son, Fredrick Wayne Arnold; and three brothers, Carl Mabe, Odell Mabe and Pid Mabe.
Surviving are one son, Marvin Arnold and his wife, Carolyn, of Denton; one sister, Sallie Dockery of High Point; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-7:30 tonight at Harold C. Davis Funeral Home.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Drive, High Point, N.C. 27262.
