Ernest Newton Sr.

Ernest Grady Newton Sr., 80, of 3067 W. Lexington Ave. died at 4:36 a.m. Aug. 18, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital after two years of declining health.
He was born April 27, 1920, in Guilford County, a son of Lewis Grady and Ethel Cagle Newton, who both preceded him in death. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II. He was a High Point resident since 1952. He was a member of Zion United Church of Christ, Thomasville, where he served as chairman of the building committee. Prior to retirement, he was employed with Champion International. He was a former member of Davidson County Water Committee. On Oct. 10, 1942, he married the former Doris Reece, who survivies of the residence. He was preceded in death by a brother, Johnny Newton.
Also surviving are a son, Ernest 'Ernie' Newton Jr. and his wife, Penny, of 3912 Wallburg Road; a daughter, Kay Hunt and her husband, Rick, of 3047 W. Lexington Ave.; four grandchildren, Christy Hunt, Scott Newton and his wife, Dacia, Bradley Hunt and Marcy Newton; a brother, Howard Newton and his wife, Earline, of Archdale; two sisters, Mrs. Pearl Culler and her husband, Thermon, of Archdale and Mrs. Sarah Lou Reece of Ledford-Friendship Road, Winston-Salem; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Goldia Newton of High Point.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Zion United Church of Christ by the Rev. Joe D. Coltrane and the Rev. Wilbur A. Jarrett. Entombment will be in Floral Garden Park Mausoleum. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point.

Betty Parker
Thomasville
Mrs. Betty Jean Jordan Parker, 69, of 22 Hodges Drive died Aug. 18, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born July 29, 1931, in Davidson County, a daughter of Charlie Walter and Zannie Nichols Jordan. She was a homemaker. On Aug. 3, 1948, she married Raymond L. 'Greasey' Parker, who preceded her in death July 27, 1985. She also was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Alene Harrelson and Mrs. Peggy Shaw; two brothers, Kent Jordan and Vernon Jordan; and a grandson, Andrew Stephen 'Andy' White.
Surviving are two daughters, Ms. Sandy Parker of Trinity and Ms. Bonnie Parker of Thomasville; three sons, Josh Parker, Tim Parker and Stacey Parker, all of Thomasville; three sisters, Mrs. Norma Green, Mrs. Maxine Carter and Mrs. Clatie Berrier, all of Lexington; and two grandsons, Joe Parker and Chase Parker, both of Thomasville.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery by the Rev. Marty Tobin. The body will be at J.C. Green & Son Funeral Home until the hour of service. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Shirley Phillips

Mrs. Shirley Harris Phillips, 63, of 515 Ridgecrest Drive died Aug. 18, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital after an extended illness.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Cumby Family Service, High Point.

Lucille Rice
High Point
Mrs. Lucille Marshall Rice, 86, of Britthaven Nursing Home in Thomasville, died Aug. 18, 2000.
She was born Jan. 15, 1914, in Forsyth County, a daughter of Laurie and Virginia Crumpler Marshall. She was a homemaker and a member of Green Street Baptist Church. On Sept. 30, 1933, she married Claude Everette Rice, who preceded her in death Jan. 6, 1972.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Nancy Wallace and her husband, George, of 1233 Westminister Drive, High Point; two sons, Charles Rice and his wife, Cynthia, of Madison and Gene Rice and his wife, Martha, of Hickory; five grandchildren, George Wallace Jr. Stephen Wallace, Julia Rice, Emily Rice and Daniel Rice; and a great-grandson, Callie Marshall Wallace.
Funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Sechrest Chapel, High Point, by the Rev. Gene Phillips. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. The body will be at Sechrest Funeral Home. Visitation will be 1:30-2:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and other times at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Wallace.

Roderick Reece
High Point
Roderick Johnson Reece, 79, of 3733 Pine View Ave. died Aug. 18, 2000, at his residence.
He was born Oct. 1, 1920, in Booneville, a son of Joe and Deette Johnson Reece. On Feb. 17, 1940, he married Thelma Boggs Reece, who survives of the residence. He was head custodian at Shadybrook Elementary School in the High Point City School system. He was a U.S. Navy veteran having served during World War II. He was a member of Pilot View Baptist Church and an avid camper.
Also surviving are his son, Rodney Joel Reece Sr. and his wife, Pat, of High Point; three brothers, Max Reece and his wife, Virginia, of High Point, Fred Reece and his wife, Jean, of Archdale and Tommy Reece and his wife, Jewel, of Booneville; three sisters, Agnes Melton of Archdale, Jannes Bradley and her husband, Jim, of Booneville and Bertha Lewis and her husband, Buck, of Booneville; a grandson, Rodney Joel Reece Jr. of High Point; a granddaughter, Lavonda Michelle Duncan and her husband, Robert, of High Point; and three great-grandchildren, Joel Reece of Trinity, Amanda and Melia Duncan, both of High Point.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Cumby Family Funeral Service of High Point, Eastchester Drive Chapel by the Rev. Bynum Orr. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery with military graveside rites. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Donald Ridge

Donald 'Donnie' Eugene Ridge, 41, of 491 J.D. Essick Road died Aug. 17, 2000, at Randolph Hospital in Asheboro.
He was born June 8, 1959, in Davidson County, a son of Chester Eugene and Nellie Johnston Ridge. He attended Davidson County Community College and studied emergency medical technician and business. He was formerly employed as a patient account representative with Advance Home Care of Winston-Salem. He was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Temple. On Nov. 3, 1991, he married Lisa Grubb, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are a son, Bradley Eugene Ridge of the residence; his mother and stepfather, Nellie Ridge Kennedy and Jimmy Kennedy of 495 J.D. Essick Road; three sisters, Mrs. Deborah 'Debbie' Byerly and her husband, Roger, Ms. Reginia White and Mrs. Kristy Kennedy and her husband, Michael, all of Lexington; three brothers, Wayne Ridge and his wife, Leann, of Lexington, Robert Eugene Ridge and his wife, Leann, of Thomasville and Freddie Ridge and his wife, Cindy, of Thomasville; a stepbrother, Wilson Kennedy of Sophia; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Ruth Johnston of Lexington; paternal grandmothers, Mrs. Essie Walker of Lexington and Mrs. Dorothea Ridge of Thomasville; his mother-in-law, Mrs. Diane Connolly of Thomasville; his father-in-law, Bobby Grubb of Thomasville; two brothers-in-law, Bobby Grubb and Chad Grubb, both of Thomasville; four nieces; and seven nephews.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel by the Rev. Larry Michael. Burial will be in Reedy Creek Church of Christ Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Mrs. Virginia Roach, 76, died Aug. 18, 2000, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.
She was born Jan. 24, 1924, in Stokes County, a daughter of Lee and Victoria Hedrick, who both preceded her in death. She was a member of Shining Light Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil H. Roach.
Surviving are her two sons, William L. Roach of Liberty and Bob Roach of Greensboro; two sisters, Louise Crumpler of Kernersville and Nancy Jones of Trinity; two grandchildren, William L. 'Billy' Roach Jr. of Liberty and Felecia Roach Crutchfield of Mebane; a stepgrandchild, Sarah Hood of Greensboro; and two great-grandchildren, Amanda Crutchfield and AnnaLee Day Roach.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Shining Light Baptist Church by the Rev. Jimmy Dillon. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home Vanstory Street Chapel.

Richard Bull

Richard Martin Bull, 60, died Aug. 18, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born June 6, 1940, in Forsyth County, a son of John Edmond and Eliza Brown Bull, who preceded him in death.
Surviving are a daughter, Belinda Brewer of Kernersville; four sisters, Juanita Whitesell of Greensboro, Janet Emory of Greensboro, Mary Alice Maulden and Phyllis Parrish, both of Kernersville; two brothers, Robert Bull of Virginia and David Paul Bull Sr. of Kernersville; and six grandchildren.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. today at Pierce Funeral Chapel.

Margaret Cole

Mrs. Margaret Viola Plaster Cole, 81, of Clapp's Convalescent Nursing Home, died Aug. 19, 2000, at the nursing facility.
She was a native of Swords Creek, Va., and a homemaker. She was a member of Pleasant Hill Primitive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wiley M. Cole.
Surviving are two daughters, Kay Copple and Teresa 'Kathy' Gillispie, both of Asheboro; two sons, Barry Cole and James Cole, both of Asheboro; two sisters, Ruth Alley of Cedar Bluff, Va., and Norma Blakenship of Collegedale, Tenn.; a brother, Harvey Plaster of Swords Creek; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral will be 4 p.m. Monday at Pleasant Hill Primitive Baptist Church by Elder Roy Speir and Elder Richard Kirby. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Ridge Funeral Home and other times at the residence of her son, Barry Cole, 324 Copples Road.

Danielle Cruthis

Danielle 'Dan' Ray Cruthis, 62, of 105 Trey Lane, formerly of 5734 Joan Drive, died Aug. 18, 2000, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.
He was born July 9, 1938, in Guilford County, a son of Robert Lee Cruthis and Martha Beck Cruthis. He attended Pine Grove Baptist Church and was a former Jaycee. He had been owner of A-Nother Restaurant Equipment Co. since 1983. In 1960, he married the former Elizabeth Thayer, who survives of the residence. He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Bobby Cruthis.
Also surviving are a son, Danny Cruthis and his wife, Tammy, of Climax; one daughter, Misty Puckett and her husband, John, of Thomasville; his mother of Sophia; four sisters, Dolly Newton and Francine Gahagan, both of Archdale, Dorcas Hawkins of Sophia and Renee Smith of Cedar Square; two brothers, Laymon Cruthis of Randleman and Benny Cruthis of Sophia; one grandson, Taylor Cruthis; and one granddaughter, Fallon Puckett.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Pine Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Roy Green. Burial with military honors will follow in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale.
