Charles Gardner
Greensboro – Charles F. Gardner, 81, died Sept.19, 1999, at his residence. He was a longstanding member of Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church and was very active in the Laws Parks Sunday School Class. He was previously part owner of Battleground Tire and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and served in the National Guard. He was a Mason serving in the Corinthian Lodge. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel Gardner, who died in 1949, and by his second wife, Eugenia Gardner, who died in 1988. Surviving are his son, Lynn Bennett of Greensboro; three daughters, Cynthia Benton of Charlotte, Brenda Miller and Kay Chambers, both of Summerfield; five brothers, Max Gardner and Brice Gardner, both of Greensboro, Robert (Bobby) Gardner of Durham, David Gardner of Reidsville and Otis Gardner of High Point; ten grandchildren; thirteen great–grandchildren; and a very special friend, Dorothy Johnson of Greensboro. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church. Interment will be at Westminster Gardens. Visitation will be today from 7–9 p.m. at Hanes–Lineberry North Elm Street Chapel. Memorials may be directed to Hospice at Greensboro, 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, N.C. 27401 or to Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church, 2600 Pisgah Church Road, Greensboro, N.C. 27455.

Grady Hulon
Thomasville – Grady McMillan Hulon, 81, died Sept. 18, 1999, at his residence. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at J.C. Green and Sons Chapel. Interment will follow in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be today from 7–9 p.m. and other times at the home.

Mitchell Pierce
High Point - Mitchell Cornell Pierce, 82, a resident of 530 Timber St. died Sept. 19, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital. He was born August 25, 1917, in Randolph County, a son of Robert Jasper and Arminta Andrews Pierce. He was the owner and operator of Carolina Wrecking Co. from 1953 until his retirement in 1984. On November 19, 1984, he was married to the former Mary Louise Johnson who died on June 22, 1989. Surviving are one daughter, Brenda Louise Pierce of High Point; one son, John Hill and wife, Kathy, of High Point; and one grandson, John Mitchell Hill. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sechrest Archdale Chapel, by the Rev. Mel Anderson. Interment will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home today from 7–8:30 p.m. and other times at the home of John and Kathy Hill, 5612 Clayton St., Archdale.

Elizabeth Thigpen
Randleman – Mrs. Elizabeth Johnson Thigpen, 78, of Cedar Square Road died Sept. 19, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital following hospitalization of two days. She had been in declining health for 6 years. She was born in Richmond, Va., a daughter of Clarence and Dora Coltrane Johnson. She had resided in the Cedar Square community most of her life and was a life member of Galilee United Church of God. She was honored as mother of the church and had served as a Sunday school teacher, president of the Sunshine Band, past member of the usher board and member and past president of the Missionary Cycle. For 50 years, she was employed in the home of the T.L. Laughlin family. Her husband, Raleigh Thigpen Sr., died Jan. 7, 1979. Her parents; one sister, Gertrude Finley; and three brothers, Clyde Johnson, Robert Johnson and Nathaniel Johnson, all preceded her in death. Survivors include one son, Raleigh Thigpen Jr. and wife, Mary, of the Cedar Square community; one daughter, Mrs. Faye T. Steed and husband, Harry, of the Cedar Square community; seven grandchildren, Marilyn, Kimberly, Ronnie, Troy, Gail, Terry and Nicole; six great–grandchildren, Rhealynn, Cory, Courtney, Jason, Ashley and Arein; play son, Elder Earnest (Doris) Dukes of Greensboro; two brothers, Roosevelt Johnson of Wildwood, N.J., and the Rev. Roy (Liza) Johnson of High Point; five sisters, Mrs. Geraldine (John) Smith, Mrs. Dorothy Bristow, Mrs. Rachel (Foster) Wallace and Mrs. Daisy Johnson, all of the Cedar Square community, and Mrs. Bessie Johnson of Vallejo, Calif. There are nieces, nephews, cousins, in–laws and devoted friends. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Galilee United Church of God, by Elder Willie Purcell. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be at Haizlip Funeral Chapel from 7–8 p.m. Tuesday and other times at the residence. Haizlip Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Michael Allen
High Point – Elder Michael P. Allen, 45, a resident of 1000 Lakecrest Avenue, died Sept. 12, 1999, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, where he had been a patient for 21/2 weeks. He had been in declining health for 11 months. He was born in Newark, N.J., a son of Welton and Margaret Jackson Allen. He graduated from Westfield High School in New Jersey and also attended Lincoln Technical College, Union, N.J., and Guilford Technical Community College, Jamestown, pursuing courses in auto mechanics and diesel mechanics, respectively. He had been a resident of High Point nine years and an active member of New Bethel Baptist Church where he served as an elder and on the Minister’s Board. He was an employee of PTG Logistics/Flowers Bakery where he was a truck driver. Surviving relatives include his wife, Mrs. Laurie Baldwin Allen of the home; three daughters, Ms. Alease Nicole Allen, Ms. Tara Mari Allen and Ms. Britni Mical Allen, all of the home; his parents of Westfield, N.J.; three brothers, Gregory Allen, Wayne Allen and Reggie Allen, all of Westfield, N.J.; a niece, Tenesha, a student at New York University, NewYork; two nephews, Kenneth Allen and Marcus Allen of Tennessee. Funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at New Bethel Baptist Church by the Rev. John Mason. Visitation will be noon Friday at the church and other times at the residence. Haizlip Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ed Hall
Lexington – Ed Franklin Hall, 68, of 10409 E. Old Highway 64, died Sept. 13, 1999, at Community General Hospital in Thomasville. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

Willene Hathcock
Lexington – Mrs. Willene Fisher Hathcock, 83, of 21066 St. Martin Road, died Sept. 13, 1999, at her home. She was born April 13, 1916, in Cabarrus County, the daughter of Charles and Gatha Hahn Fisher. She was a homemaker and member of Pine Grove United Methodist Church. She was teacher and president of United Methodist Women for many years. She was married to John Ray Hathcock who preceded her in death Sept. 19, 1983. Surviving are a son, Larry Fisher Hathcock and wife, Clara, of Charlotte; a daughter, Mrs. Becky Ann Hathcock Lord and husband, Olin, if Thomasville; a sister, Mrs. Helen Barrier of Concord, five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Pine Grove United Methodist Church by the Rev. Curran Welch and the Rev. Martha Welch. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at the Stanly Funeral Home, Inc. Memorials may be directed to Building Fund, Pine Grove United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1717, Albemarle, NC 28002.

Marie Hedrick
Lexington – Marie Wilhelm Hedrick, 85, died Sept. 14, 1999. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Pilgrim Lutheran Church. Arrangements are by Piedmont Funeral Home, Lexington.

Leona Quillen
Titusville, Fla. – Mrs. Leona Beck Quillen, 81, died Sept. 12, 1999. She was born on June 2, 1918, in Thomasville, a daughter of Earlie David and Mabel Floyd Beck. She was an executive secretary and retired from Martin Marietta Corp., Washington, D.C., in 1972. She is survived by her husband, Eugene Quillen of Titusville, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Beck Hammons of Magnolia, Texas, and Mrs. Elizabeth Beck Easter of Lexington; four nieces, Mrs. Delores Cope of Archdale, Mrs. Janice Mims of Magnolia, Texas, Mrs. Barbara Nifong and Mrs. Donna Skeen, both of Thomasville; five nephews, David D. Shean, Kenneth L. Shean and Stephen Shean, all of Archdale, Ronald Shean of Cleveland, Tenn., and David Easter of Lexington; nine great-nieces; eight great-nephews; and several great-great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Mrs. Louise Beck Shean. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Sechrest Chapel in Archdale by the Rev. James Smith. Burial will be in Clarksbury United Methodist Church Cemetery, Thomasville. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of St. Francis Inc., P.O. Box 5563, Titusville, Fla. 32783-5563.

Mary Reid
Archdale – Mrs. Mary Campbell Reid, 77, of Tarheel Drive died Sept. 14, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital. She was born March 23, 1922, in McDowell County, W.Va., to George B. and Maggie Hyatt Campbell. Mrs. Campbell was married to Conley L. Reid who died in 1983. She is survived by two brothers, James E. Campbell of Archdale and Lester W. Campbell of Yorktown, Texas; two sisters, Mrs. Alvia Hutton of Kure Beach and Mrs. Goldie O. Marsh of Sophia. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Reid was preceded in death by two brothers, Conley Campbell and Roy Campbell; and two sisters, Mrs. Frances Warren and Mrs. Lola Crouch. A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale. At other times, the family will be at the residence of James E. Campbell, 402 Tarheel Drive, Archdale.

Paul Terrell
Archdale – Paul James “Curly” Terrell Sr., 78, of 132 Renola Drive, died Sept. 14, 1999, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born in Orange County on April 11, 1921, a son of Thomas Grover and Mary Wolfe Terrell. He had resided in High Point for 66 years, and was employed by Byrum/Dutch Laundry as a delivery driver and for the last eight years was employed by Haworth Seating. He was a member of Trindale Baptist Church and a member of the Friendly Encouragers Sunday school class. He was first married for 37 years to Selda Dyer, who preceded him in death. On April 17, 1976, he married Frances Duncan Anderson, who survives of the home. Also surviving are four daughters, Gloria Wright of McLeansville, Sylvia Cooper, Mrs. Larry (Janie) Portis and Kathy Portis, all of Thomasville; two step-daughters, Mrs. Bobby (Betty) Hodges of Thomasville and Miriam Anderson of High Point; five sons, Richard Terrell of Fuquay-Varina, Charles Terrell, Tim Terrell, Clifford Terrell and Paul Terrell Jr., all of High Point; a half-sister, Mrs. Hester Weatherford of Hamlet; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one step-grandson. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Sechrest Chapel, E. Lexington Avenue by the Rev. David Williams and the Rev. Phil Smith. Mr. Terrell’s grandsons will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will be at the funeral home from 7-8:30 tonight and other times at the home. Memorials may be directed to the Trindale Baptist Church, Building Fund, 10407 Archdale Road, Trinity, NC 27370 or Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Drive, High Point, NC 27262.

Mattie Cannon
Lexington – Mrs. Mattie Ruth Touchstone Cannon, 74, of Spring Drive died Sept. 14, 1999, at Lexington Memorial Hospital. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Davidson Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be other times at the residence.

Geneva Davis
Thomasville – Mrs. Geneva Kennedy Davis, 90, of Cox Avenue died Sept. 15, 1999, at Community General Hospital. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday in Thomasville City Cemetery. Visitation will be 1:30-2 p.m. Friday at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home.

Ruth McManus
Trinity – Mrs. Ruth Thompson McManus, 90, died Sept. 14, 1999, at Graybrier Nursing and Retirement Center. She was born June 29, 1909, in Guilford County, a daughter of James Garfield and Mary Elizabeth Crissman Thompson. She was a member of Green Street Baptist Church and retired from Triangle Hosiery. She was married to Dewey Towery, who preceded her in death, and later to William “Carl” McManus, who preceded her in death. Surviving are a son, James Towery of Charleston, S.C.; two daughters, Mrs. Helen Dennis of High Point and Mrs. Harold (Susie) Monroe of Trinity; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Iris Whittington of Carolina Beach. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale by Dr. Elliot B. Stewart and the Rev. Randal A. Quate. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Evelyn West
Thomasville – Mrs. Evelyn Petty West, 69, formerly of 2392 N. N.C. 109 died Sept. 15, 1999, at Britthaven of Davidson Nursing Home. She was born Feb. 10, 1930, in Guilford County, a daughter of George and Viola Haley Petty. She was a member of Christian Cathedral in Thomasville, where she was an assistant teacher for the Lady’s Bible Class. She also retired from Leggett and Platt. On Jan. 27, 1978, she married Foster “Jr.” West, who preceded her in death. Surviving are a son, George A. Whitfield of Wilmington; a stepson, Foster Leonard of Peeksville, N.Y.; a daughter, Mrs. Larry (Linda) Jones of Thomasville; a stepdaughter, Lois West of Peeksville; five grandchildren, Chris Jones of Charlotte, Mark Jones of Thomasville, Amy Whitfield of Kernersville, Rachel West and Foster Leonard Jr., both of Peeksville; and four sisters, Lois Keck, Martha Welch and Matlin “Tootsie” Talbert, all of High Point, and Vivian Lee of Hillsville. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale by the Rev. Numa Highfill, the Rev. Jeffrey Hilbourn and the Rev. Jane Auman. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Christian Cathedral Benevolence Fund, P.O. Box 682, Thomasville, N.C. 27361.

Randleman – Marnil Allred, 81, died Sept. 15, 1999. Funeral will be 8 p.m. tonight at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel.

Charlie Byerly
Thomasville – Charlie “Austin” Byerly, 74, of Light Road died Sept. 14, 1999, at Heritage Health Center. Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Monday in Free Pilgrim Church Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Sunday at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home.
