Mrs. Louise Surrett Charlton, 79, died Oct. 16, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital after a stroke she suffered Oct. 3, 2000.
She was born Feb. 9, 1921, in Union, S.C., a daughter of Charles and Bertha Davis Surrett. She was a High Point resident the majority of her life and retired from Western Electric Corp. in Greensboro. She was a member of Hayworth Wesleyan Church, the Berean Sunday School Class and the Young At Heart Club. On July 12, 1945, she married Donald Charlton, who preceded her in death Oct. 24, 1999.
Surviving are two sons, Paul David Charlton and his wife, Fatima, and Richard Dean Charlton and his wife, Ruth, all of High Point; four grandchildren, Samantha Halker, Jason Charlton, Emily Charlton and Eva Charlton; three great-grandchildren, Hanna, Emma and Alexis; two sisters, Mrs. Elsie White and Mrs. Georgia Hunt, both of High Point; and two brothers, John Edward Surrett of High Point and David Haskell Surrett of Thomasville.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Hayworth Wesleyan Church by the Rev. David M. Emery. Entombment will be in Oakwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point.
Memorials may be directed to Hayworth Memorial Wesleyan Church, 1696 Westchester Drive, High Point, N.C. 27262.

Albert Clark
Sophia
Albert Leslie Clark, 84, of 3321 Marcal Circle died at 2:22 a.m. Oct. 17, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born April 14, 1916, in Aurelius, N.Y., a son of Joseph and Emily Summers Clark, who both preceded him in death. He retired from Myrtle Desk and was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Independent Order Of Odd Fellows. On Dec. 2, 1936, he married the former Doris Blood, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Sondra) Ware of Winston-Salem and Mrs. Robert (Linda) Routh of Sophia; eight grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, by the Rev. Glen Myers and the Rev. Lloyd Hunsucker. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Horace Dorn Jr.
Hixson, Tenn.
Horace Dorn Jr., 88, died Oct. 16, 2000, at his residence.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Burks United Methodist Church. Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. today at the North Chapel of Chattanooga (Tenn.) Funeral Home.

Mozelle Gross
Archdale
Mrs. Mozelle Aldridge Gross, 98, of 10606 S. Main St. died Oct. 16, 2000, at her residence.
She was born Aug. 31, 1902, in Randolph County, a daughter of Lee and Ann Taylor Aldridge, who both preceded her in death. She was a lifelong resident of the Archdale vicinity. She retired from Carolina Undergarments and was a member of Archdale Friends Meeting. On Dec. 2, 1925, she married Albert G. Gross, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are two sons, Albert Gross Jr. of Frostproof, Fla., and Raymond Gross of Archdale; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, by the Rev. Scott Wagoner. Burial will be in Lebanon United Methodist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
Memorials may be directed to Archdale Friends Meeting, 114 Trindale Road, Archdale, N.C. 27263.

James Kennedy
High Point
James 'Pop' Woodrow Kennedy, 79, formerly of 506 Avalon Place, died Oct. 17, 2000, at Wesleyan Arms Nursing Center of High Point.
He was born May 5, 1921, in Guilford County, a son of James Albert and Mary Eudora Millikan Kennedy. He retired from Leggett-Platt Inc. in 1989. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II. He was a member of Living Waters Baptist Church and the Adult Sunday School Class. On Feb. 4, 1941, he married Ruth Reynolds, who preceded him in death Sept. 25, 2000. He also was preceded in death by a son, James Leslie Kennedy in 1985.
Surviving are a daughter, Linda Annette K. Jones of Kernersville; three sons, Steven Woodrow Kennedy of Galax, Va., Michael Lee Kennedy and Albert 'Buster' Kennedy, both of High Point; a sister, Margaret K. Hicks of Sophia; four brothers, Colon Kennedy of Gastonia, Wilton Kennedy of Rockville, Md., Clyde Kennedy of High Point and Roby Kennedy of Archdale; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. at Sechrest Funeral Service Chapel, High Point. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence.
Pallbearers will be Patrick, Matthew, Nicholas and Brian Kennedy, Doug Jones and Gene Ambrose.

Margaret Runnion
Burlington
Mrs. Margaret Scott Runnion, 89, formerly of Raleigh, died Oct. 17, 2000.
Surviving are a brother and sister-in-law, Robert S. and Patricia M. Runnion of Twin Lakes Center, Burlington; two nieces, Patricia R. Avery of High Point and Margaret R. and her husband, David W. 'Duffy' Robbins, of Phoenixville, Penn; a nephew, R. Scott Runnion III and his wife, Cynthia P. Runnion, of Jacksonville Beach, Fla.; three great-nieces, Erin R. Lima of Surrey, England, Katherine B. Robbins of St. David's, Pa., and Elizabeth S. Runnion of Jacksonville Beach; and two great-nephews, D. Morgan Avery of Wilmington and Robert O. Avery of St. David's.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Montlawn Memorial Park, Raleigh.
Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, St. Mary's Street, Raleigh, is in charge of arrangements.

Carrie Stout
Thomasville
Mrs. Carrie Marsh Stout, 93, of 1143 W. Green Drive died Oct. 15, 2000, at Liberty Woods Nursing Home.
She was born June 24, 1907, in Randolph County, a daughter of William Riley Marsh and Lundy Agusta Myers Marsh, who both preceded her in death. She was a lifelong resident of this area. She retired from Maurice Hosiery Mill and later retired from Kayby Mills. After her retirement, she worked with the Senior Center Country Store in Lexington. She was a charter member of Greenwood Baptist Church. On July 5, 1941, she married June Stout, who preceded her in death in 1971. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Marvin (Lucille) Hughes and a grandson, Marvin Lee Hughes.
Surviving is a son, Dwight Stout of the residence.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Greenwood Baptist Church by the Rev. Steve Livengood. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Lena Travis
Belmont
Mrs. Lena McIntosh Travis, 86, of Belaire Health Care Center, Gastonia, formerly of 109 Oak Trail, died Oct. 17, 2000, at the center.
She was a native of Lincoln County, a daughter of William Thomas McIntosh Sr. and Lottie Duckworth McIntosh, who both preceded her in death. She was married to Herbert Franklin Travis, who preceded her in death. She was a long-time member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Belmont, United Methodist Women and the Wesley Sunday School Class. She retired from Gaston County School System after 25 years of service as a food service supervisor.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Laura Travis and Charles David Cox of High Point; a brother, Robert A. McIntosh of Belmont; a sister, Corrie Hovis of Mt. Holly; and two grandchildren, Allison Leigh Cox and Lydia Millen Cox, both of High Point.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Ebenezer United Methodist Church by the Rev. H.L. Talbert. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Charlotte. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at McLean-Bumgardner Funeral Home.

Nell Willard
Hereford, Ariz.
Mrs. Nell Lovings Willard, 71, formerly of Kersey Valley Road, High Point, N.C., died Oct. 12, 2000, in Hereford.
She was born Feb. 18, 1929, in Union, S.C., a daughter of Charlie and Lillie Trammell Lovings. She moved to High Point, N.C., in 1966, and later moved to Hereford in 1999. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray A. Willard and a daughter, Pamela J. Meris.
Surviving are a son, Dennis Willard and his wife, Donna, of Hereford; two sisters, Agatha Sinclair and Faye Smith, both of Union, S.C.; four grandchildren, Scott Willard of Arizona, Ashley Warlick of Hawaii, Karen Tucker of High Point and Cindy Meris of Greensboro, N.C.; three great-grandchildren, Jessica Turner of High Point, Samantha Tucker of High Point and Kayla McChristy of Arizona; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Shining Light Baptist Church Cemetery, Greensboro. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Sechrest Funeral Service, 1301 E. Lexington Ave., High Point.

Thomas Byrd
Trinity
Thomas Andrew Byrd, 47, of 4835 Pliney Farlow Road died Oct. 17, 2000, at his residence.
He was born June 3, 1953, in Columbus County, a son of Alonzo and Ruth Batten Byrd, who both preceded him in death. He attended First Assembly of God Church. In 1971 he married Pam Byrd, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are a daughter, Erin Byrd of the residence; and two brothers, Gene Byrd of Rhonda and Sammy Byrd of Thomasville.
Memorial service will be 4 p.m. Saturday at Sechrest Chapel, Archdale, by the Rev. Tim Holgerson and Terry Young. Visitation will be after the service Saturday at the funeral home.

John Gordon Cochran, 74, formerly of Swing Dairy Road, died at 2:08 p.m. Oct. 17, at Brian Center Nursing Home.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Helen Davis
High Point
Ms. Helen Davis, 89, of 707 N. Elm St. died Oct. 15, 2000.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday in Randolph Memorial Park.
Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, is in charge of arrangements.

Ian Griffin
Greensboro
Ian Ward Griffin, infant son of Joe and Libby Ward Griffin, died at birth Oct. 18, 2000, at Women's Hospital in Greensboro.
Surviving are her parents of 3723 E. Frazier St., Greensboro; grandmothers, Debbie White of Greensboro and Becky Kersey of Jamestown; great-grandmother, Betty Griffin of Charleston, W.Va.
Graveside service will be 3:30 p.m. Friday in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be after the service at the resident of Ms. Becky Kersey, 6605 Brass Road, Jamestown.
Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, is in charge of arrangements.

Virginia Kiger
Kernersville
Mrs. Virginia Faye 'Jenny' Idol Kiger, 73, of 542 Nelson St. died Oct. 17, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center.
She was a daughter of Curt and Maude Idol. She retired from Berry Water Gardens. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph Idol and Edgar Idol.
Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Clyde 'Mutt' Kiger of the residence; three sons, Danny Ray Kiger and his wife, Shirley, of Colfax, Douglas Lee Kiger and his wife, Judy, of Kernersville and Charles Andy Kiger and his wife, Cynthia, of Kernersville; a sister, Mrs. Robert (Doris) Anderson of Kernersville; five grandchildren, Michelle Kiger Bates, Jennifer, Heather, Danny Jr. and Lauren Kiger; and a great-granddaughter, Alyssa Bates.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Hanes-Lineberry, Pierce Chapel. Burial will be in Eastlawn Gardens of Memory. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Nancy Odom
High Point
Mrs. Nancy Odom, 54, of 1515 Wickliff Ave #12 died at 10:15 a.m. Oct. 18, 2000, at Maryfield Nursing Home after declining health of seven and one-half months.
She was born March 18, 1946, in Forsyth County, a daughter of Williams Virgil and Vivian King Rich. She was a homemaker and a resident of High Point the majority of her life. She was a graduate of High Point Central High School and attended High Point University and University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She was a member of First Baptist Church. She was a volunteer with the American Cancer Society, Hospital Guild and the School Lunch Buddy program at Fairview Elementary School. She was married to Dan R. Odom, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are two sons, Justin Kenneth Brewer and his wife, Allison, of Raleigh and Darren Taylor Brewer and his wife, Nancy Jane, of High Point; four stepchildren, Mrs. Karen Odom Hinkle and her husband, Ron, of High Point, Mrs. Jennifer Kallao and her husband, Christopher, of Charlotte, Daniel R. Odom Jr. and his wife, Cheryl of Gainesville, Fla., Lt. Jonathan Gann Odom and his wife, Melissa of Naples, Italy; a sister, Mrs. Judy Jacobs and her husband, Charles, of High Point; her father and stepmother of Eatonton, Ga.; two half-sister, Mrs. Jill Alford and her husband, Chuck, of Kennesaw, Ga., and Mrs. June Rich of Doraville, Ga.; four grandchildren, Caroline Lorraine Brewer, Daniel R. Odom III, William Albert Kallao and James Voight Hipp II.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church by the Rev. William A. Slater and the Rev. L. Lamar King. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. The body will be at Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and other time at the residence.

Jerry Shaver
High Point
Jerry Gilbert Shaver, 72, of 1311 Longcreek Drive died Oct. 17, 2000, at Brunswick Hospital in Shallotte.
He was born June 22, 1928, in Iredell County, a son of Archie Blaine and Inez Daniels Shaver. He lived in High Point for 44 years and was a graduate of Lenoir Rhyne College. He served High Point City Schools as a elementary and high school principal, associate superintendent of administration and interim superintendent. Gov. Jim Hunt appointed him as vice chairman of the North Carolina State Textbook Commission.
He was on the board of directors of the Y's Men's and was named 'Man of the Year.' He served on the Camp Cherrio Board and was a youth basketball coach. He also was on the board of directors of First United Methodist Church, High Point Drug Action Council, Rotary Club, Family Service Bureau and the Chamber of Commerce Education Committee and a lifetime member of the National Education Association. He was advisor to the Federal Office of Economic Opportunity, Health Education and Welfare, and Head Start Program. He was a devoted husband, dad and grandfather.
Surviving are his wife, Chloe Tilley of the residence; two daughters, Mrs. Kimberly Shaver Byrd of High Point and Mrs. Julie Ann Shaver Shoaf of Welcome; two sons, Brent Shaver of High Point and Tony Shaver of Hampden-Sydney, Va.; a sister, Mrs. John (Glenda) Neal of Sedgefield; a brother, Selby Allan Shaver of Dallas, Texas; 11 grandchildren, Steven, Jordan, Jay, Christopher, Austin and Jackson Shaver, Mary Katherine, Caroline and Allison Byrd, Gill and Lauren Shoaf.
Memorial service will be 4 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church by the Rev. Don Lloyd, the Rev. Howard Allred and the Rev. Ken Lyon. Private inurnment service will be immediately after the service. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Sechrest Funeral Home, High Point.

Mrs. Flossie Kindley Yarborough, 94, of 1907-V N.Centennial St. died Oct. 17, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born April 25, 1906, in Union, S.C., a daughter of Cyrus W. and Emma Clark Kindley. She had lived in High Point since 1930 and retired from the Blacksmith Shop as a seamstress. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, the Woman's Wesley Sunday School Class, the Young at Heart Club at her church and the Fellowship Club at Wesleyan Arms. She was preceded in death by a sister, Eva K. Mooney, in 1999, and a brother, Erskine B. Kindley, in 1990. On Aug. 23, 1923, she married Eugene Ross Yarborough, who preceded her in death in 1975.
Surviving are a daughter, Miss Edna Gene Yarborough of Wesleyan Homes; and a sister, Mrs. Loma K. Bullock of High Point.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Sechrest Chapel, High Point, by the Rev. Glen L. Myers and the Rev. Lloyd G. Hunsucker. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
Memorials may be directed to Christ United Methodist Church, 1300 N. College Drive, High Point, N.C. 27262 or the charity of the donor's choice.
