Brandon Angel
Thomasville - Brandon David Angel, 18, of 1288 Lacy Hepler Road died Oct. 21, 1999, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
He was born Feb. 5, 1981 in Gurdon, Ark. He was a member of the East Davidson High School wrestling team during high school. He was an avid baseball fan and played baseball in the Thomasville Optimist Club leagues. He had a special love for the outdoors and was always willing to help anyone who needed help. He was employed with Lowes Food in Archdale and was of the Freewill Baptist faith.
Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Kay Angel and his stepfather, Steve Grant of the home; a sister, Sarah Angel of the home; three brothers, Petty Officer Wesley Angel of Norfolk, Va., Cody Grant of the home and P.J. Grant of Thomasville; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Mary Ann Hilton of the home; his paternal step-grandfather, the Rev. James Grant of Thomasville; and a very special niece, Kailey Angel.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel by the Rev. Claude Garrett and the Rev. Bobby Parker. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Donald Charlton
High Point - Donald Richard Charlton, 78, died at 10:40 p.m. Oct. 24, 1999, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He had been in declining health for several months.
He was born Nov. 5, 1920, in Baltimore, Md. He had been a resident of High Point since 1949 and was a retired employee of Western Electric, where he worked for 24 years. He was a member of Hayworth Wesleyan Church, the Fellowship Sunday School Class, former teacher of the Junior Boys, Christian Youth Crusaders and past president of the Young at Heart. He was a former member of the local board of administratives and also was a trustee and member of the choir. He was co-founder of High Point Mineral Club, where he served as president and was past president of the Greensboro Mineral Club. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy. On July 12, 1945, he married Louise Surrett, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Paul David Charlton and his wife, Fatima, and Richard Dean Charlton and his wife, Ruth, both of High Point; four grandchildren, Samantha Halker, Jason Charlton, Emily Charlton and Eva Charlton; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hayworth Wesleyan Church by the Rev. David M. Emery. Entombment will be in Oakwood Memorial Park Mausoleum. The body will be at Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
Memorials may be directed to Hayworth Wesleyan Church, 1696 Westchester Drive, High Point, N.C. 27262.

Hoyle Justice
Lexington - Hoyle Kenneth Justice, 66, of 317 E. Ninth St. died Oct. 23, 1999, at his residence after an illness of one week.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. today at Davidson Funeral Home Chapel.

Robert Kearns Jr.
Troy - Robert Ivey Kearns Jr., 80, of Charles Road, died Oct. 25, 1999, at FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital.
He was a Randolph County native, a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a retired parts and office manager of Candor Motor Co.
Surviving are a son, Bobby Kearns of Troy; a daughter, Catherine K. Thornburg of Charlotte; four brothers, Bill and Max Kearns, both of Troy, Jim Kearns of Asheboro and Don Kearns of High Point; two sisters, Ruth Leach and Nancy Brown, both of Troy; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in Southside Cemetery by the Rev. Chuck Cook and the Rev. James Hamilton. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., and other times at the residence.

Ettie Logan
High Point - Mrs. Ettie Mae Gashaw Logan, 86, of Wesleyan Arms Nursing Center died Oct. 22, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born Oct. 21, 1913, in Houston County, Ala., a daughter of Whitt and Ada Thomas Gashaw. She was a member of First Wesleyan Church. She served as a Girl Scout Leader for 25 years, was a life member and past president of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 619 and past president of the Ladies Auxiliary BPOE 1155. She also had served as a gray lady with the American Red Cross. On Oct. 8, 1938, she married Charlie W. Logan, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Mickey (Rebecca “Becky” Norman) of Morehead City, and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Monday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point by the Rev. James L. Denny and the Rev. Nelson O. Silver. Entombment was in Oakwood Memorial Park Mausoleum. Visitation was held 7-9 p.m. Sunday, and other times at the residence of Mr. Logan, 1909-S N. Centennial St.
Memorials may be directed to the Wesleyan Christian Education Center, 1917 N. Centennial St., High Point, N.C. 27262.

Percy Newnam
High Point - Percy Dalton Newnam, 81, of 3814 Johnson St. died Oct. 24, 1999, at his residence.
He was born April 14, 1918, in Rockingham County, a son of Arthur Lee and Matilda Bell Harville. He was employed with the city of High Point for 24 years, retiring June 30, 1980 as superintendent of the Water and Sewer Department. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in WWII. A Mason, he was a member of the Piedmont Lodge #681 A.F. & A.M. and held the honor of being a York Rite Mason. He was a member of Oakview Baptist Church. On Dec. 21, 1940, he married Mildred Williams, who survives of the Piedmont Christian Home.
Also surviving are two sons, Ronald Kenneth Newnam of the home and Donald Wayne Newnam of Rocky Mount; one sister, Mrs. Naomi N. Safewright of High Point; two brothers, Raymond D. Newnam of Durham and Sidney E. Newnam of Greensboro; and three granddaughters, Courtney Newnam, Jennifer Newnam and Emily Newnam.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sechrest Funeral Chapel on E. Lexington Avenue by the Rev. Kenneth Miller. Entombment will be in Guilford Memorial Park Mausoleum with Masonic cryptside services performed by the Piedmont Masonic Lodge #681. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Drive, High Point, N.C. 27262.

Loma Rothrock
Thomasville - Mrs. Loma Lee Beck Rothrock, 89, of Centerclair Nursing Center, formerly of Liberty Drive died at 9:10 p.m. Oct. 24, 1999, at the nursing home.
She was born in Davidson County, Oct. 24, 1910, a daughter of William Ambrose and Bessie Myers Beck. She was a lifelong resident of Davidson County and a member of Fairgrove United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Philathea Sunday School Class and a life member of the United Methodist Women. She also was a homemaker. In 1928, she married Flavius Lester Rothrock, who preceded her in death Nov. 19, 1946.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Bobby (Polly) Smith of Thomasville; a son, Fred Rothrock of Thomasville; six sisters, Mrs. Ruby Sullivan, Mrs. Raeford (Pearl) Brinkley, Mrs. Eula Mae Murphy and Mrs. Lucille Nifong, all of Thomasville, Mrs. Emmitt (Evelyn) Marion of Charlotte and Mrs. Hida Rea Tuttle of High Point; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Elsie Marie Rothrock Gobble.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Fairgrove United Methodist Church by the Rev. David L. White and the Rev. Barney L. Pierce. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence of her son, Fred Rothrock, 1908 Liberty Drive.
Memorials may be directed to the Building and Improvements Fund of Fairgrove United Methodist Church 305 Willowbrook Drive, Thomasville, N.C. 27360.

Mary Suggs
Climax - Mrs. Mary Coble Suggs, 80, passed away Oct. 24, 1999, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.
She was a native of Guilford County and a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church. She was a member of the administrative board, the Sunshine Sunday School Class, the Wesleyan Circle of UMW and the Friendly Club at her church. She retired from the Commonwealth Hosiery Mill in Randleman. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edmond Suggs.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Carol S. and Jimmy Williams of Climax; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gilbert and Jeannie Suggs, and Lowell and Pam Suggs, all of Climax; a sister, Mrs. Wilma C. McCulloch of Greensboro; a brother, Keith Coble of Climax; seven grandchildren, Karen Parrish and her husband, Tim, Sherri Davis and her husband, Jeff, Keith Suggs, Kim Suggs, Kelly Suggs, Mary Ellen Suggs and Carlie Suggs; and four great-grandchildren, Haley and Anna Parrish, and Johnathan and Jamie Davis.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bethlehem United Methodist Church by the Rev. Mark Andrews. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Loflin Funeral Home in Liberty and other times at the residence, 1108 N.C. 62 E.

George Taylor
Trinity - George William Taylor, 85, of 5611 Fairview Church Road died Oct. 24, 1999, at Community General Hospital in Thomasville.
He was born Aug. 2, 1914, in Buncombe County. He had lived most of his life in Randolph County and retired from McLean Trucking Co. and also had worked for Ashley Manor Furniture Inc. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of Fairview United Methodist Church. In 1958, he married the former Mae Calloway, who preceded him in death Sept. 20, 1994.
Surviving are five daughters, Rosalee Taylor Whitmire of Lancaster, S.C., Faye Taylor West of Asheville, Dorothy Hall of Roanoke, Va., Gladys Baker and her husband, Fred, of Thomasville and Ruby Lee Joslin of Missouri; five sons, William Ray Taylor of Lancaster, Jack Howard Taylor of Asheville, Edward Jennings Taylor of Tennessee, James J. Owensby of Mooresville and Vernon Owensby of Siler City; a brother, Ben Taylor of Asheville; 37 grandchildren; and 70 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale by the Rev. Bobby G. Swaim. Burial will be in Fairview United Methodist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence of Gladys and Fred Baker, 3804 Pineview Ave., Thomasville.

James Barnett Sr.
High Point - James Lee Barnett Jr., 65, of 814 E. Lexington Avenue died Oct. 26, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Oct. 23, 1934, in Hazard, Ky., a son of Mitchell and Stella Burge Barnett. He was a resident of High Point for 30 years. He was employed for six years at Slane Hosiery, retiring in 1999. He also was employed at Singer Hosiery for 15 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp. He was married to Delores Napier, who preceded him in death Aug. 7, 1996.
Surviving are one daughter, Miss Angela Barnett of the home; two sons, Dwayne Barnett of Raleigh and Jam High Point Unit, 4-A Oak Branch Drive, Greensboro, N.C. 27407.

Joe Hanes
Lexington - Joe Junior Hanes, 73, of N.C. 150 died at 6:44 a.m. Oct. 26, 1999, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Good Hope United Methodist Church. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 tonight at Davidson Funeral Home.

Brenda Jernigan
Denton - Ms. Brenda Gayle Milliken Jernigan, 54, died Oct. 25, 1999.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Briggs Funeral Home Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Betty Leonard
Lexington - Mrs. Betty Barnhardt Leonard, 88, died Oct. 25, 1999.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Leonard.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church.
Piedmont Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

O. Meadows
Morehead City - Ms. Odessa Jarvis Meadows, 91, died Oct. 25, 1999, at Carteret General Hospital.
Surviving are three nephews.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. today at Munden Funeral Home.
