Roy Lucian Smalley, 73, of 935 Cotton Grove Road died at 4:15 a.m. Dec. 6, 2000, at his residence.
He was born in Lincolnton, Ga., a son of Lonnie and Ethel Smalley. He retired as a truck driver with Billings. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy R. Smalley of Lexington; his son, Roy Eugene Smalley of Lexington; four daughters, Deborah (Tommy) Gaskins of High Point, Janice (Jeffrey) Little of Salisbury, Constance Katrina (Barry) Hower and Melissa Davis, all of Lexington; five sisters, Juanita Smalley, Myrtrice Powell, Pearline Darthard and Mylo Anderson, all of Lexington and Mabel Kinole of High Point; and five grandchildren.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Friendship Baptist Church by the Rev. Henry B. Waiters, the Rev. Patrick Horton and the Rev. Barry Hower. Burial will be in Lexington City Cemetery. Visitation will be 2:30-3 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Doris Valentine
High Point
Mrs. Doris Mae Hicks Valentine, 78, of SunBridge of the Triad, formerly of 416 Greenwood Drive, died Dec. 6, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born Aug. 12, 1922, in Guilford County, a daughter of Montiville Merrit and Ida Ward Hicks, who both preceded her in death. She was a lifelong resident of High Point and a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church. She maintained an active relationship with her friends and family at High Point Friends Meeting. She was formerly employed with Jarrett’s Stationary, Dennis Office Supply and Griffith Office Supply. In 1976, she was Woman of the Year and president of the Furniture City Chapter, American Business Women’s Association. On April 13, 1941, she married Lester Lee Valentine, who survives of SunBridge of the Triad.
Also surviving are a daughter, Kathy Jane Visi and her husband, Joseph, of High Point; two brothers, Sherman Hicks and Homer Hicks of High Point; a sister, Rachel Hicks of High Point; two grandchildren, Christopher and Mary Margaret Visi; and a special friend and sister-in-law, Judy Valentine Payne.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, by the Rev. Dave Kingrey and the Rev. Roland Jones. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and other times at the residence of her daughter, 3633 Fairlaine St.

Floyd Coburn
Hanahan, S.C.
Floyd Ray Coburn, 74, LCDR USN Retired, died Dec. 5, 2000, at his residence.
He was born Oct. 28, 1926, in Martin County, N.C., a son of Joseph Griffin Coburn and Lela Ada Williams Coburn. He retired from the U.S. Navy, having served on submarines, USS Tarpon and USS Sea Raven, during World War II. He served later on the USS Greenfish, USS Sarigo, USS Caiman and submarine tenders USS Bushnell, USS Proteus, USS Gilmore as well as tours at the Charleston Naval Shipyard. His service career included World War II, Korean War and Viet Nam War.
He retired from Carolina Power and Light Co. as director of quality assurance, outage and reports at Brunswick Nuclear Power Plant, Southport, N.C. He was a member of Highland Park Baptist Church and a life member of Carolina Lodge 325 A.F.M. He was a member of U.S. Submarine Veterans of World War II and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Professional associations include Professional Quality Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers and N.C. Society of Engineers.
Surviving are his wife, Lois Poole Coburn of the residence; three children, Tony Ray Coburn of Hendersonville, N.C., Rebecca Gail Coburn-Jones of Seattle and Gary Wayne Coburn of Houston; seven grandchildren, Crystal Coburn of Houston, Marich Coburn of Tabor City, N.C., Bonnie, Mika Mae and Daniel Ray Jones, all of Seattle, Nathaniel Jones of Clemson, S.C., and Brenton Coburn of Hendersonville; and a brother, David Coburn of Greenville, N.C.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Highland Park Baptist Church. Burial with military honors will be 1 p.m. in Beaufort National Cemetery, Beaufort, S.C. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home in Charleston.

Mrs. Ethel Rollins Elliott, 89, of The Oaks of Thomasville died Dec. 7, 2000, at Liberty Wood Nursing Center.
Funeral will be 4 p.m. Saturday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel. Visitation will be 3-4 Saturday at the funeral home and other times at the residence of her daughter, Jeanette Branson, 18 Pershing St.

A. Everhart Jr.
Thomasville
Arthur Lee Everhart Jr., 79, of 2313 Ball Road died Dec. 6, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Nov. 8, 1921, in Davidson County, a son of Arthur Lee Everhart Sr. and Daisy Long Everhart. He was owner and operator of Everhart’s Grocery. He was a member of Heidelberg United Church of Christ, where his mother was a charter members of the church. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, having served during World War II. He was married to Mary Grey Ward Everhart, who preceded him in death Oct. 23, 1986. He later married Treva Lamb Clinard Everhart, who also preceded him in death March 6, 1999.
Surviving are his daughter, Miss Reatha Jo Everhart of Thomasville; a son, Robert Lee Everhart of Winston-Salem; a granddaughter, Miss Kristen Michelle Everhart of Winston-Salem; and a stepdaughter, Ms. Marsha Reddick of Thomasville.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel by the Rev. Jamie Fonville and the Rev. Jim Staunton. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 tonight at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Mrs. Addie Ecola Harp, 71, of 706 Barbee St. died Dec. 6, 2000, at her residence.
She was born Feb. 21, 1929, in Mt. Gilead, a daughter of Tobias and Della Pemberton. She was a homemaker. She was a graduate of Peabody High School, Montgomery County. She was a member of First
Emmanuel Baptist Church. She was a member of the Senior Usher Board #1, Missionary Circle #7, United Ushers of High Point and Thomasville, advisor of the Birthday Club for Usher #1 and was “Grandmother At Large.” She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Bertha McCullough and Ms. Annie Pemberton.
Surviving are her husband, John Will Harp; five sons, Billy Ray Drake, Keith Harp, Dwayne Harp, Johnny Harp and Kendrick Harp; six daughters, Ms. Vicki Harp, Ms. Shelia Harp, Mrs. Linda Depugh, Mrs. Donna Harp, Mrs. Kimberly Harp and Mrs. Gena Harp; a brother, James W. Pemberton; five sisters, Mrs. Elma Thompson, Mrs. Della Bogans, Mrs. Cameline Lindsay, Mrs. Ida Covington and Mrs. Sally Wall; 12 grandchildren, Nikeya Harp, Rashaad Depugh, Nikeya Depugh, Antoine Bailey, Andre Harp, Edward Wallace, Antoine Harp, Austin Harp, Jeremy Harp, Jahren Harp, Alexis Harp and John Harp; and seven other relatives, Mrs. Mary Mason, Mrs. Marie Russell, Ms. Rosalee Brown, Mrs. Deborah Inzar, Ms. Helen Brown, Mrs. Jillian Baker and Mrs. Jane Brown.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at First Emmanuel Baptist Church, Leonard Avenue by the Rev. Lawrence Curtis and the Rev. James Flake. Burial will be in Carolina Biblical Gardens. Visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the service Sunday at the church and other times at the residence.

Kay McNeill

Mrs. Kay Greenwald McNeill, 53, of 4262 N.C. 49 South, died Dec. 7, 2000, at Randolph Hospital.
She was a native of Tifton, Ga. She was a hairstylist and co-owner of Twin Creek Emu Farms. She was a member of First Baptist Church. She also was a member of German Shepherd Dog Club of America.
Surviving are her husband, Allen Ritter McNeill; five stepsons, Allen Ray McNeill, Kelly Douglas McNeill, James Eric McNeill and Leonard Keith McNeill, all of Asheboro, and David Charles McNeill of Randleman; a stepdaughter, Belinda Kay Bolick of Winston-Salem; and six grandsons.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church by the Rev. John S. Rogers. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro.

Faye Black
Thomasville
Mrs. Faye V. Black, 80, a resident of 5490 Holly Grove Rd. died Dec. 8, 2000, at Britthaven of Davidson.
She was born March 24, 1920, in Davidson County, a daughter of Ollie T. and Daisy S. Black. She was employed for many years at City Cleaners and later at Elliott’s Florist. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church.
For many years she was active in the affairs of the Davidson County Republican Party and is a member of the Davidson County Republican Party Hall of Fame. She was at one time employed by the Hi-Toms professional baseball club.
Surviving are a son, James H. “Jay” Black and wife, Barbara, of Thomasville, and a brother, Raymond T. Black of Thomasville. Three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Family Funeral Care Chapel by Rev. Michael Evans. Interment will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at 175 Lindsay Acres Ln. in Thomasville.

Dolores Bogans
High Point
Mrs. Dolores Armstrong Bogans, 61, of 1201 Day Place died Dec. 6, 2000, at her residence.
She was born in High Point, a daughter of Raymond Armstrong and Beulah Haltom Kelly Armstrong. She was a graduate of William Penn high school, and as a youth attended Pilgrim Congregational Church.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee “Bobby” Bogans; two brothers, Johnny Armstrong and James “Buddy” Armstrong; and niece, Gilda Armstrong.
Surviving are two uncles, James Haltom and Anthony DeCorsey Haltom; six nieces and nephews, Frenchie Rainey, Pamela Smith, Chiquita Bridges, James “Jimmy” Armstrong, LaDonna Armstrong and Johnnetta Brown; mother-in-law, Mrs. Della Bogans; and two sisters-in-law, Lizzie Armstrong and Mary Armstrong Vaughn.
Memorial service will be 7 p.m. Monday at Haizlip Funeral Chapel by Rev. Ron Wilkins. Visitation will be 6:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral chapel. Haizlip Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ruby Comer
High Point
Mrs. Ruby Culler Comer, 74, died Dec. 9, 2000, at Triad Manor Nursing Home after an extended illness.
She was born Feb. 20, 1926, in Davidson County, daughter of the late Claude L. and Lillie Martin Culler. She spent most of her life in the High Point area and was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
Surviving are three children, Deanie Lambeth of High Point, Julie Caufman of Santa Maria, Calif. and Wes Warder of Frisco, Tex.; three sisters, Virgie Clapp of Marion, Betty Allred of Ormond Beach, Fla. and Shirley Evans of Blair, Calif.; two brothers, Lester L. Culler of Winston-Salem and Sherman Culler of Surfside Beach, S.C.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Monday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale by Dr. Lawrence Clapp.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Dr., High Point, N.C. 27262.

Helen Gray
Thomasville
Helen Hinkle Gray, a resident of 106 Randolph St. died Dec. 8, 2000, at the Piedmont Center in Thomasville.
She was born May 14, 1907, in Lexington, a daughter of Will Grimes Hinkle and Etta Everhart Hinkle. She was educated through the Thomasville Schools, Greensboro College and Maryland College.
She taught first grade in Davidson County and Trinity. She ran a private kindergarten in the summer at the Old Methodist Hut on Randolph Street beginning in 1930. She was a former member of the Thomasville Woman’s Club and its Arts Department, the Phi Beta Book Club, Captain Benjamin Merrill Chapter of D.A.R. in Lexington and the Dutch Club of Lexington.
She was a life member of N.C. Art Society, Historic Preservation Foundation of North Carolina and Genealogical Society of Davidson County. She was a member of Heidelberg United Church of Christ and was named Deacon Emeritus of the church.
She was married to Julius H. Gray, who preceded her in death in 1974. Surviving are a sister, Frances H. Barnhardt (Mrs. M.C. Barnhardt, Jr.) of Salisbury; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Thomasville City Cemetery by Rev. Jamie Fonville. The body will remain at the J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home until the service hour. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorials may be directed to Heidelberg United Church of Christ, 118 Salem St., Thomasville, N.C. 27360.

Colleen Bowers Hill, 72, died Dec. 9, 2000.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Good Hope United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel.

Robert Jones

Robert Ray Jones, 65, of Jessup, Md. died Dec. 7, 2000.
There will be no funeral service. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Vera L. Hedrick, of Archdale and a sister, Mrs. Peggy Lamb, of Trinity. Local arrangements are by Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point.

Mrs. Josie Garvin Merwin, 50, of 515-K East Commerce Ave. died Dec. 9, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.

Christine Lanning Palmer, 92, died Dec. 8, 2000.
Funeral will be 4 p.m. Tuesday at Tyro United Methodist Church Chapel. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday at Davidson Funeral Home.

Robert Pardue
High Point
Robert “Red” Glen Pardue, 72, a resident of 701 Maryland Place died Dec. 8, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born May 28, 1928, in Yadkin County, a son to Thomas Caswell and Lula Mae Jones Pardue. He had been a resident of High Point for several years and was a retired truck driver. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church.
On March 28, 1959, he was married to the former Geneva Black, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are three daughters, Melody Barnes and husband, Rickey, of Lexington, Denise Welborn and husband, Kenny, of High Point and Loretta Fredere and husband, Jaimie, of the home; one son, Steven G. Pardue, of High Point; one stepson, Robert Poindexter, of Yadkinville; one sister, Maude Mock of Winston-Salem; one brother, J.T. Pardue of Yadkinville; and four grandchildren, Rickey Barnes, Benjamin Barnes, Ashley Fredere and Jeremiah Fredere.
Graveside service and interment will be 11 a.m. Monday at Richmond Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Yadkinville by Rev. Steve Welborn. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. today at Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale.

Andrew Potts

Andrew “Andy” P. Potts, 81, died Dec. 7, 2000.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Center United Methodist Church by Rev. Larry Jent. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel.

Lora Swett
High Point
Mrs. Lora Rhinehart Swett, 99, formerly of Dayton Street, died Dec. 8, 2000, at the Piedmont Christian Home.
She was born May 13, 1901, in Haywood County, a daughter of William and Callie Foster Rhinehart. She moved to High Point in 1923 and was the oldest living member of Christ Community Church. In 1957, she retired from Emma Blair School where she managed the school cafeteria.
She served as a sitter for handicapped children in area special education schools for a number of years. Those who knew “Maw Swett” knew her as a kind, generous and unselfish lady.
In May of 1917, she was married to William Nelson Swett, who preceded her in death in August of 1960. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Ellen Swett Jones, on Jan. 23, 2000, and a niece, L.C. Joines, in 1997.
Surviving are four grandchildren and their spouses, David H. and Hilda Rouse of High Point, Lynda R. and Bud Pickard of Holden Beach, Wayne M. and Carolyn Rouse of Morganton, and Jerry B. and Debbie Rouse of Denver; 12 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren; three step great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews whom she dearly loved.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point by Rev. Jeff Palmer and Elder Norbert Kemp. Interment will follow in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home and other times at the home of David Rouse, 3711 Bentbrook Dr.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Dr., High Point, N.C. 27262.

Ruth Votta
High Point
Mrs. Ruth Mulligan Votta, 81, of Maryfield Nursing Home died Dec. 8, 2000, at the home.
She was born April 17, 1919, in Hazelton, Penn., the daughter of Erwin and Bertha Sheppard Mulligan. She was a homemaker and a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Greensboro.
On April 29, 1944, she married Michael A. Votta, who survives of 1702 Maryfield Ct.
Also surviving are her son, Richard James Votta and wife, Edith, of Greensboro; two sisters, Mary Somers of Allentown, Penn. and Helen Houser of Hazleton, Penn.; her grandson, Michael Bryan Votta; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial mass will be 2 p.m. Monday at Maryfield Nursing Home Chapel by Father Phillip Kollithanaty. Burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Belmont Abbey Cemetery in Belmont. A brief visitation will be held after the mass.
