Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Holloways Baptist Church by the Rev. Darrell Hunley. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 tonight at Davidson Funeral Home.

Ruby Maxine Parks Martin, 69, died Dec. 16, 2000.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight and other times at the home. Arrangements are being handled by Ridge Funeral Home.

Mrs. Ocia Small McDowell, 90, died Dec. 17, 2000.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel in Asheboro. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the home of Ora Clark, 615 Highland St., Asheboro.

Sam Morris
Thomasville
Sam W. Morris, 91, a former resident of Morris Drive died Dec. 16, 2000, in the Brian Center in Lexington.
He was born Nov. 22, 1909, in Denton, a son of Edmond Sharon and Esther Victoria Loflin Morris. He was a member of the Woodman of the World. He spent all of his life in the timber and furniture industry.
In his early years with the Thomasville Chair Co., he helped construct the wooden model of the “Big Chair” which has since been replaced with the one that is now in place constructed of concrete. He was featured in this past August edition of the Thomasville Times about his involvement on what is Thomasville’s landmark.
A member of Bethel United Methodist Church for 64 years, he was an active member of his church, serving on various church boards, a choir member and Sunday School activities, all of which he was devoted to until his health began to fail.
On Dec. 27, 1932, he was married to Ida Crouch, who preceded him in death on Feb. 23, 1983.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Sara Mayhew and Mrs. Robert (Peggy Deloris) Safrit, both of Thomasville; one son, Sherrill Morris and wife, Peggy, of 800 Echo Trail; two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Steed of Denton and Mrs. Sylvia Ward of Asheboro; one brother, Eddie J. Morris of Virginia Beach, Va.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bethel United Methodist Church by Rev. Ben Shepherd. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. The body will remain at Family Funeral Care in Thomasville until placed at the church 30 minutes before the service. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the home of his son.
Memorials may be directed to Bethel United Methodist Church, 508 Fisher Ferry St., Thomasville, N.C. 27360.

Dewey Tompkins
Thomasville
Dewey Albert Tompkins, 67, of 226 Stemp Everhart Road died Dec. 15, 2000, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
He was born May 15, 1933, in Lumberton, the son of Nolen Tompkins and Lula Smith Tompkins. He had been a resident of Thomasville since 1957, coming here from Loris, S.C. He was employed with Commercial Carving and was a member of New Grace Baptist Church.
On Sept. 16, 1949, he married Berlene Bullard, who survives of the home.
Also surviving is a son, Dewey Ronald Tompkins and his wife, Donna, of Thomasville; three grandchildren, Michael Tompkins of Bolivia, Ray Moore of Thomasville and Christina Echerd of Thomasville; two great-grandchildren, Steven Moore and Pandora Echerd; two special sisters-in-law; five special brothers-in-law; and special nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. today at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel by the Rev. D.W. Long, the Rev. Kenneth Fowler and the Rev. Ron Mason. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be at the home.

Myrtle Womack
Thomasville
Mrs. Myrtle Richardson Womack, 69, of 104 Goforth St. died Dec. 16, 2000, at Community General Hospital.
She was born June 1, 1931, in Surry County, a daughter of Monroe and Sarah Billings Richardson, who both preceded her in death. She was a homemaker. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Ray Womack on Sept. 4, 1992.
Surviving are two sons, Billy Joe Womack Sr. and wife, Patricia, and Johnny Womack, all of Thomasville; two daughters, Betty W. Garrett of Thomasville and Barbara Ann W. Crouse of Lexington; eight grandchildren, Jessica Dianne Myers, Jason Charlie Myers, Rebecca Shay Womack, Douglas Anthony Gordon, Joe Tim Reason Jr., Albert C. Reason, Billy Gene Crouse Jr. and Billy Joe Womack Jr.; and one sister, Annie Mae Holmes of High Point.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Womack Family Cemetery in Broadway by the Rev. Hearth Kennedy. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home.

Robert Billings

Robert Vivian Billings, 69, of 263 Richford Ave. died Dec. 17, 2000, at Wake Forest University Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
He was born April 4, 1931, in Wilkes County, a son of William McCoy Billings and Foy Estelle Bray Billings. He was a resident of Davidson County since 1993. He was employed with WBT Service in Millers Creek as a truck driver. He was a member of Victory Baptist Church. On July 19, 1948, he was married to Miss Gracie Lee Elizabeth Casey, who preceded him in death Jan. 14, 1995. He also was preceded in death by his son, William Henry Billings.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Ronnie (Betty) Daugherty of High Point, Mrs. Jo (Barbara) Cross of Trinity, Mrs. Bill (Wanda) Southern and Mrs. Frank (Brenda) Rhodes, both of Thomasville; a son, Charlie Billings and his wife, Judy, of High Point; two brothers, William Lester Billings and Ernest Elton Billings, both of Trap Hill; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchilden.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel by the Rev. Charles Loman. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery in High Point; Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Bill (Wanda) Southern, 243 Richford Ave.

Jack Burks
High Point
Jack Burks, 73, formerly of Kernersville, died Dec. 17, 2000, at Evergreens Nursing Home after several years of declining health.
He was born Feb. 5, 1927, in Danville, Va., a son of Henry and Ada Yeatts Burks. He retired from Adams Millis in 1995, after 17 years of service. He was a member of Trulite Baptist Church and the Adult Sunday School Class. He was preceded in death by six brothers and sisters.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Donrie Shepard Burks of the residence; five daughters, Mrs. Beverly Sebald and her husband, Bob, of Ft. Mill, S.C., Mrs. Kay Blevins and her husband, Danny, of Clover, S.C., Mrs. Jackie Whitt and her husband, Dennis, of Martinsville, Va., Ms. Debbie Steen of Randleman and Mrs. Tonja Tuttle and her husband, Keith, of Kernersville; a brother, Rudolph Steagall of Martinsville, Va.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trulite Baptist Church by the Rev. Paul Sparks, the Rev. Eric Peacock and the Rev. Leon Holyfield. The body will be at Harold C. Davis Funeral Home until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Mrs. Fleta Juanita Hanes Callahan, 74, of S. Payne Street died at 12:40 p.m. Dec. 18, 2000, at Brian Center Nursing Home. Funeral will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the residence of her son, Craig Callahan, 1216 Thomason St.

Rev. Coy Crowe
Mocksville
The Rev. Coy Isaiah Crowe, 96, of Howard Street, formerly of Roseland Street, Greensboro, died Dec. 17, 2000, at Autumn Care of Mocksville.
He was born Oct. 8, 1904, in Madison County, Ga., a son of John Patton and Tishie Graham Crowe, who both preceded him in death. He retired from the Evangelical Methodist Church as a pastor. His pastorates included Danielsville, Ga., Glen Alpine; Old Richmond EMC, Portland, Ind., Keysville, Va. and High Point. He also was preceded in death by his first wife, Sadie Lou Evans Crowe; seven children and one grandson.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret Auton Crowe of Greensboro; two sons, Mark Crowe of Royston, Ga., Phil Crowe and his wife, Brenda, of Mocksville; a sister, Iva James of Concord; 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Danielsville Evangelical Methodist Church, Danielsville, Ga., by the Rev. Tim Peek, the Rev. Max Allman and the Rev. Billy Carcy. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Pruitte Funeral Home, Royston, Ga. Memorial service will be held later at Evangelical Methodist Church, Thomasville.
Memorials may be directed to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Freddie Hale
Greensboro
Freddie Joe Hale, 68, died Dec. 17, 2000, at Moses Cone Hospital.
He was born Jan. 26, 1932, in Jacksboro, Texas, a son of Joe Franklin and Laura Hale, who both preceded him in death. He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps, having served in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He taught ROTC at Grimsley High School. He also retired from Guilford County.
Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Catherine Hale; two sons, Richard and Stephen Hale; three daughters, Cynthia Hale, Dina Anderson and Kelly Hale; a sister, Beulah Wooten; a brother, William Hale; seven granddaughters; and one great-granddaughter.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hanes-Lineberry, Sedgefield Chapel. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-9 tonight at the funeral home and 10 a.m.-noon Wednesday at the funeral home.

Martha Lewis
High Point
Mrs. Martha R. Lewis, 83, departed this earthly life Dec. 16, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born Aug. 17, 1917, in High Point, a daughter of Herbert and Nellie Torrence Robinson, who both preceded her in death. She attended High Point public schools. She was married to Oscar Lewis, who also preceded her in death.
She was active at First Emmanuel Baptist Church until her health prevented her from attending. She also was very active in OES, Lady Astor Chapter #9 and Karem Court #1 and Daughters of Sphinx.
Surviving are her immediate family, Mrs. J.D. Boulware of Atlantic City, N.J., and Mrs. Dorothy Rudd of High Point; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; and two special friends, Mrs. Eula Knox and Mrs. Peggy Moore, all of High Point.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at First Emmanuel Baptist Church by the Rev. Lawrence Curtis. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church prior to the service and other times at 100 Lawndale Ave.
Hoover’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mildred McLean

Mrs. Mildred Elizabeth McLean, 77, of Becky Hill Road died Dec. 16, 2000.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Piedmont Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence of her daughter, 158 Burbank Drive.

Norman Silver
Greensboro
Silvercraft leader, Norman Silver, dies at home at 74
GREENSBORO – Norman Herbert Silver, 74, of 5 Crossfield Court died Dec. 18, 2000, at his residence.
He was born in High Point, a son of Phillip and Sylvia Silver. He was an active member of Beth David Synagogue in Greensboro and B’nai Israel Synagogue in High Point.
He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served in the armed forces during World War II. He took charge and became president of the family business, Silvercraft, in 1952. In 1981, he sold the company. He was involved in religious and organizational activities in the synagogues he attended.
He will be remembered for his dignity and his quiet manner. Those who knew him will always remember his humor and the kind way in which he showed it. It was said of him that he belonged to a generation that possessed elegance, grace and thoughtfulness. Death was not unexpected, yet he bore the knowledge with inspiring grace, providing his devoted wife and family with the highest example of the best of a man. He and his wife, Eileen, of 17 years enjoyed the fullness of a union lived as God intended for marriage. He was preceded in death by his only brother, Irving Silver in 1981.
Surviving are his wife, Eileen Bardy Silver of Greensboro; his mother, Sylvia Silver of High Point; his son, Ron Silver of Greensboro and his wife, Caryl, and their daughter, Brianne; his daughter, Sandra Moffit or Greensboro and her sons, Josh, Bryan and Seth; his daughter, Pam Charen of Charleston, S.C., and her husband, Michael, and their children, Ashley and Ali Charen and Rachel Budow; his son, Phillip Martin of Atlanta, Ga.; his son. Edward Martin of Boca Raton, Fla.; his daughter, Leah Biller of Charleston, S.C. and her husband, Alan, and their children, Skylar and Reily.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Beth David Synagogue by Rabbi Eliezer Havivi and Rabbi Jerome Fox. Burial will be in the Hebrew Cemetery, Greensboro. Shivah Minyan services will be held at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday at the residence.

Nellie Steven

Mrs. Nellie Davis Hedgecock Stevens, 94, of W. Vandalia Road, formerly of Forrest Street departed this life Dec. 17, 2000, to be with the Heavenly Father.
She was born Oct. 22, 1906, in Guilford County, a daughter of Alfred and Sarah Wrightenberry Davis. She was a member of High Point Primitive Baptist Church. She retired from F.W. Woolworth as a cashier. On Aug. 12, 1922, she married Harlen Hedgecock, who preceded her in death. On Oct. 2, 1954, she married Chester Stevens, who also preceded her in death. She was preceded in death by her three sons, Harlen Hedgecock, Lewis Hedgecock and James Hedgecock; and a daughter, Helen Payne.
Surviving are six daughters, Mrs. Loiston (Margie) Patton of Newton, Mrs. Ray (Betty) Moore of High Point, Mrs. Al (Peggy) Waters and Mrs. Patsy Pappas, both of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Mrs. Norman (Judith) Foxworth of the residence and Mrs. Tom (Linda) Robinson of High Point; 33 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Harold C. Davis Funeral Home Chapel by Elder Roy Speir. Burial will be in Abbotts Creek Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence of her daughter, Judith Foxworth.
Mama we will miss you, but we will join you again in Heaven.

James Trembath
Charlotte
James Grenfell Trembath, 91, of 5100 Sharon Rd. went to be with the Lord Dec. 16, 2000, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte after a brief illness.
He was born Sept. 7, 1909, in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., a son of Mary Grenfell and William Trembath, who were both officers in the Salvation Army. He was a graduate of Trenton, N.J., High School. He retired from Southern Asbestos Co. as a traffic manager in 1974, serving 43 years with the company.
He was a member of Myers Park United Methodist Church and the Fellowship Sunday School Class. He was a former member of Senior Forum and Senior Scholars. He was a volunteer at Presbyterian Orthopedic Hospital for 10 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Howie Trembath, Aug. 9, 1993.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Lynn and Dr. Al Reeder of High Point, and Marti and Pete Hoogendonk of Salisbury; three grandchildren, Al Reeder Jr., Mary Lynne Radford and Alice Reeder-Doss; and six great-grandchildren, Katie and Joseph Reeder, Jenna and Ty Radford, and Hailey Reeder and Jorie Doss.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. today at Myers Park United Methodist Church by the Rev. Julian Aldridge, senior minister. A private entombment service was held earlier in Sharon Memorial Park Mausoleum. Visitation will be after the service in the fellowship hall of the church.
