Ruth Welborn

Mrs. Ruth Elam Welborn, 83, of 3853 Valley Drive died Dec. 18, 2000, at SunBridge of Asheboro.
She was born Feb. 15, 1918, in Montgomery County, a daughter of Mack and Beulah Walker Elam. She retired from Rice Hosiery Inc. She was a member of Mt. Gilead United Methodist Church, formerly served as a teacher of the Primary Class and as a member of the choir. On April 11, 1939, she was married to Arthur Thomas Welborn, who preceded her in death Jan. 20, 1974.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Gilead United Methodist Church by the Rev. Matthew J. Emory. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Sechrest Funeral Service, Archdale.
Memorials may be directed to the Mt. Gilead United Methodist Church Building Fund, 4736 Mt. Gilead Church Road, Trinity, N.C. 27370.

James Williams

James Earl “Scrape” Williams, 79, of 1610 Brockett Ave. died Dec. 18, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Haizlip Funeral Home.

Bernice Brown

Mrs. Bernice Bowden Brown of Piedmont Retirement Center, formerly of Fairgrove Road, died Dec. 19, 2000, at the center.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church. Visitation will after the service at the church.

Helen Burleson
High Point
Mrs. Helen Burleson, 79, of Wesleyan Arms Inc. died Dec. 19, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point.

Freddie Hale
Greensboro
Freddie Joe Hale, 68, died Dec. 17, 2000, at Moses Cone Hospital.
He was born Jan. 26, 1932, in Jacksboro, Texas, a son of Joe Franklin and Laura Hale, who both preceded him in death. He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps, having served in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He taught ROTC at Grimsley High School. He also retired from Guilford County.
Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Catherine Hale; two sons, Richard and Stephen Hale; three daughters, Cynthia Hale, Dina Anderson and Kelly Hale; a sister, Beulah Wooten; a brother, William Hale; seven granddaughters; and one great-granddaughter.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Hanes-Lineberry, Sedgefield Chapel. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 10 a.m.-noon today at the funeral home.

Stella Phillips
Trinity
Stella Virginia Phillips, 77, of 4946 Marlbrook Court died Dec. 19, 2000, at her residence.
She was born Jan. 1, 1923, in Beckley, W.Va., a daughter of George and Rosie Eastard Philips. She retired from High Point Furniture Industries. She was a member of Trindale Fellowship and the Sunday School. On May 10, 1940, she was married to the Rev. William Hiram Phillips who preceded her in death Oct. 13, 1990.
Surviving are two daughters, Virginia Phillips Garner and her husband, Preston, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Carolyn Phillips Reid of Trinity; six sons, Hansel Phillips and his wife, Wilma, of Greer, S.C., Ward Phillips and his wife, Becky, of Sophia, Richard McKinney Phillips and his wife, Barbara, of Trinity, Leamon Grant Phillips of Opelika, Ala., Jerry Gene Phillips and his wife, Cynthia, of Trinity and Larry David Phillips and his wife, Angela, of Greenville, S.C.; 49 grandchildren; and 39 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Sechrest Archdale Chapel by the Rev. Tommy Garner and the Rev. Joe Hunt. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Minnie Tuggle
Archdale
Mrs. Minnie Tuggle, 83, of 4406 Burgemere Drive died Dec. 19, 2000, at Westwood health and Rehab Center.
She was born Oct. 9, 1917, in Stokes County, a daughter of Jasper and Tena Lawson Biby, who both preceded her in death. She was a resident of the Randolph County area the majority of her life. She retired from Anvil Brand Inc. and attended Bunker Hill Primitive Baptist Church. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. On Feb. 20, 1936, she married Ausbie Washington Tuggle, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are three sons, Charles A. Tuggle and his wife, Mary Lou, of Asheboro, Donald L. Tuggle and his wife, Lynne, of Trinity and Ronnie R. Tuggle of the residence; a daughter, Mrs. Betty Gean Cross and her husband, Jerry, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Puckett of Ellerbee and Mrs. Peggy Dodson and her husband, Hassell, of Kernersville; nine grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, by the Rev. Rodney Holloman. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence.
Memorials may be directed to Westwood Health and Rehab Center, 625 Ashland St., Archdale, N.C. 27263.

James Williams
High Point
James Earl “Scrape” Williams, 79, of 1620 Brockett Ave. died Dec. 18, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital where he was a patient nine day. He was in declining health two years.
He was a son of Flora Gray Williams and a lifelong resident of High Point. He was an active member at Christ The King Catholic Church. He retired from Fli Back Co. He later was employed as a courier with Wachovia Bank. Fraternally, he was a member of Knights of Columbus. On July 20, 2000, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille William.
Surviving are three cousins, Mary Gray King of Greensboro and Robert and Helen Todd of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and a host of other cousins and friends.
Funeral will be 12:30 p.m. Friday at Christ The King Catholic Church by Father Philip Kollithanath. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be noon Friday at the church and other times at the residence.
Haizlip Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Irene Yates
Thomasville
Mrs. Irene Myers Yates, 79, of 3280 Lower Lake Road died Dec. 18, 2000, at Community General Hospital.
She was born Oct. 15, 1921, in Davidson County, a daughter of John and Effie Leonard Myers, who both preceded her in death. She was a member of the graduating class of 1938 of Pilot High School. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Rich Fork Baptist Church, the Victory Sunday School Class and the Women’s On Mission. She married Austin Yates in 1943, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are a son, Preston Yates and his wife, Nancy, of High Point; two sisters, Mrs. L.R. (Kaola) Jarrett Jr. of Thomasville and Mrs. Klyo Long of Midway; a brother, Robert Lee Myers of Thomasville.
Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Thursday in Rich Fork Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. J. Byron Barker and the Rev. James Helvey. The body will be at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home until the hour of service. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
Memorials may be directed to Rich Fork Baptist Church, 3993 Old U.S. 29, Thomasville, N.C. 27360.

Hoyt Allen

Hoyt McCoy Allen, 75, of E. 13th Ave. died at 11:30 a.m. Dec. 20, 2000, at Brian Center Nursing Home.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence of his daughter, Barbara Cloer, 979 Remer Regan Road.

Bernice Brown
Thomasville
Mrs. Bernice Bowden Brown of Piedmont Retirement Center, formerly of Fairgrove Road, died Dec. 19, 2000, at the center.
She was born July 16, 1911, in Stanly County, a daughter of Enoch Bowden and Ella Faris Bowden. She was a graduate of James Madison University in Virginia. She was a resident of Thomasville since 1950. Prior to moving to Thomasville, she taught school in North Garden and Stoney Point, Va. She also taught school in Thomasville. She was well known for her crafts in embroidering and doll making. She enjoyed sharing her crafts with her friends and others that she came in contact with. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church. She was a former president of the Presbyterian Women and a honorary life member of the Presbyterian Women. She was married to Sterling M. Brown, who preceded her in death on May 21, 1995.
Surviving are her son, John Sterling Brown and his wife, Jane, of Asheboro.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Robert Hann. Visitation will be after the service Thursday in the church parlor.
Memorials may be directed to First Presbyterian Church, 21 Randolph St., Thomasville, N.C. 27360.

Helen Burleson

Mrs. Helen Burleson, 79, of Wesleyan Arms Inc. died Dec. 19, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born Jan. 27, 1921, in Surry County, a daughter of Henry C. and Connie Holyfield Fowler. She was married to Harry Burleson, who preceded her in death Jan. 19, 1992.
Surviving are her daughter, Gloria Ann Crowder of Winston-Salem; five brothers, Sam Fowler of Wallburg, John Fowler of Madison, Jim Fowler of Charlotte, William Fowler of Trinity and Ernest Fowler of Archdale; two sisters, Lorena Dickey of Trinity and Raynell Shields of Welcome; and two grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, by the Rev. James Smith. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 p.m. until the hour of service Friday.

Ms. Maria Nicole Edwards and Alyssa Morgan Edwards, infant twins of David and Melanie Edwards of Old Wesley Chapel Road, failed to survive birth Dec. 19, 2000, at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Smith Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be after the service Thursday in the church fellowship hall.
Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington is in charge of arrangements.

Barbara Gregory
High Point
Mrs. Barbara Ann Saunders Gregory, 58, of 513 Commerce Ave. Apt. E-2, gave up her long battle with cancer in the morning hour and went to be with her loved ones waiting to welcome her to her heavenly home Dec. 18, 2000, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice in Winston-Salem.
She was born Jan. 29, 1942, in Guilford County, a daughter of Lucille Saunders and Charles Smith, who both preceded her in death. She attended William Penn High School. She was a member of First Emmanuel Baptist Church. She never complained through her years of sickness, always cheering those who came to cheer her up. She is remembered for her always neat appearance, soft spoken voice and sweet smile. Her family was her treasure. She was a loving mother, aunt, cousin and friend.
Surviving are her son, George “Gi Gi” Gregory of Atlanta; a brother, John Saunders of Greensboro; a halfsister, Gail Saunders of New York City; five aunts, Mrs. Ella Gray, Mrs. Attie (Lonnie) Gray, Mrs. Alease Gray, Mrs. Maggie Saunders, all of High Point, and Mrs. Virginia Saunders of Washington, D.C.; an uncle, Jeter (Peggy) Floyd of Winston-Salem; two devoted friends, Mrs. Corrine Zereen and Mrs. Glossie Pemberton; and many relatives and friends.
Home-going service will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at First Emmanuel Baptist Church by the Rev. Lawrence Curtis. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be 1-1:30 p.m. Friday at the church. Funeral procession will leave 12:30 p.m. from the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie and Attie Gray, 1513 E. Commerce Ave. en route to the church.
She will be greatly missed. She is now free from this world, no more pain, no more suffering. She is resting peacefully until the Resurrection Day.

Mrs. Reta Blanche Sink Lanning, 91, died at 4:20 p.m. Dec. 20, 2000, at Lexington Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
