Howard “Bill” Young Surratt, 66, of 1044 Harvest Drive, died Dec. 24, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Aug. 21, 1934, in Davidson County, a son of Walter Frank Surratt and Esther Hopkins Surratt, who both preceded him in death. He retired from Thomasville Fire Dept. in 1977, after 18 years of service. He ran The City Cleaners and had various rental properties in Thomasville. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and the Upper Room Sunday School Class. On June 29, 1957, he was married to Wavel Bodenheimer Surratt, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Jerry (Kim) Sullivan and Mrs. Charles (Sandi) Gordon, both of Thomasville; a son, Steven Surratt of Thomasville; three sisters, Mrs. Charles (Maxine) Curry of Thomasville, Mrs. Loy (Susie) Smith of Trinity and Ms. Blanche Miller of Denton; two brothers, Dolan “Buck” Ward and his wife, Zelpha, of Granite Falls and Donald Surratt and his wife, Becky, of Thomasville; seven grandchildren, Dawn Sullivan, Megan Sullivan, Tiffany Sullivan, Dustin Gordon, Trent Gordon, Carri Gordon and Daniel Surratt, all of Thomasville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Bethel United Methodist Church by the Rev. Ben K. Shepherd. Burial will be in Thomasville City Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at J.C. Green & Sons Inc. and other times at the residence.
Memorials may be directed to Bethel United Methodist Church Building Fund, c/o Jim Hutchens, 1409 Sumner Road, Thomasville, N.C. 27360.

L.Lynn Britton
Linwood
Mrs. Lila Lynn Pollard Britton, 72, of 9971 N.C. 150 South Lot #1 died Dec. 26, 2000.
Memorial service will be 8 p.m. Friday at Piedmont Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be 6-8 Friday at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Ruth Draughn
High Point
Mrs. Ruth Swann Draughn, 79, of 502 Forest St. died Dec. 26, 2000, at Evergreens Nursing Home.
She was born June 19, 1921, in Bryson City, a daughter of Herman Livingston Swann and Annie Walker Swann. In 1980, she retired from Florian Fashions in Cleveland, Ohio. She was a member of Lexington Avenue Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Jenny N. Johnson and her husband, Larry, of Jamestown and Mrs. Anne Forst and her husband, Don, of Whitehouse, Texas; a son, Otis A. Nunn Jr. and his wife, Martha, of High Point; a sister, Mrs. Margaret Gray of Archdale; a brother, Herman L. Swann Jr. of Dallas; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Memorial service will be 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Sechrest Chapel, E. Lexington Avenue, High Point, by the Rev. Ray Hamilton.

Wade Frazier
Randleman
Wade Roosevelt Frazier, 70, of 7261 Davis Country Road, formerly of Old Walker Mill Road, died Dec. 26, 2000, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation for Asheboro.
He was a native of Randolph County. He was a self-employed farmer and a saw mill operator in the Level Cross area for many years. He was a member of Gospel Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Mary Cox Frazier; and a brother, Madison Frazier.
Surviving are his wife, Alma Frazier; his stepson, Leon Pratain of Georgia; a grandson; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday in Randolph Memorial Park. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Pugh Funeral Home.

Willie Freeman
Winterville
Willie James “Crook” Freeman, 71, of 3324 Jolly Road died Dec. 24, 2000, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Don Brown Funeral Chapel, Ayden. Visitation will be at the residence.

Robert Gearhart
Thomasville
Dr. Robert Paul Gearhart, 88, of 34 Hedrick Drive died Dec. 27, 2000, at Piedmont Center.
He was born June 2, 1912, in Lycoming County, Pa., a son of Ephiram McClay Gearhart and Bessie Leonard Gearhart, who both preceded him in death. He was associated with Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. He was of the Lutheran faith, On Aug. 29, 1940, he married Golda Wood Gearhart, who survives of the residence. He was an undergraduate of the University of Pittsburgh and a medical graduate of Temple University.
Also surviving are two sons, Robert P. Gearhart Jr. of Boulder, Colo., and Reid Gearhart of New York City; a daughter, Ms. Susan Olshinski of Archdale; and three grandchildren, Erin Queen and her husband, Wayne, Shane Olshinski and Erin Gearhart.
Memorial service will be at a later date at Unity Place at the Piedmont Center.

William Gray Sr.
High Point
William Bruce Gray Sr., 70, of 612 Gatewood Ave. died Dec. 25, 2000, at his residence.
He was born March 3, 1930, in High Point, a son of June Alson and Irene Hutchison Gray. He was a lifelong resident of High Point. He attended High Point University and retired as owner of High Point Hardware. He was a former member of High Point Rotary Club. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, former superintendent of the Sunday School and teacher. He was a former member of the board of trustees and church lay leader. On June 25, 1950, he married Rachel Gillean, who survives of the residence. He was preceded in death by his son, William Bruce Gray Jr.
Also surviving are two sons, James Frank Gray of 110 Mamie Lane, Jamestown, and Thomas Edward Gray of Germantown, Tenn.; a brother, Joseph Hutchison Gray of the Presbyterian Home; four grandchildren, Justin Edward Gray, Leslie Ann Gray, William Bruce Gray III and Thomas Carlton Gray.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park Cemetery. The body will be at Sechrest Funeral Home until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

Kenneth Hedgecock
High Point
Kenneth Harold Hedgecock, 69, of 205 Dogwood Circle died Dec. 27, 2000, at his residence after eight months of illness.
He was born March 14, 1931, in Guilford County, a son of Paul and Ida Mae Kersey Hedgecock. In 1957, he married Joan Clodfelter, who survives of the residence. He retired as a driver and operator with High Point Fire Department Station #4, having served 20 years. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was a member of Bunker Hill United Methodist Church. After his retirement, he was a driver with the airport transportation service for eight years.
Also surviving are two daughters, Jill Parrish of Trinity and Sherri Hedgecock of the residence; a sister, Betty Welborn of Greensboro; and three grandchildren, Ashley Parrish, Brittany Parrish and Michael Parrish.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Bunker Hill United Methodist Church by the Rev. Wes Austin. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral service, High Point, and other times at the residence.
Memorials may be directed to the Rev. Walter Cooper Memorial Fund, Bunker Hill United Methodist Church, 1510 Bunker Hill-Sandy Ridge Road, Kernersville, N.C. 27284.

Franklin Lewis
High Point
Manufacturer, Franklin Lewis, dies at age 88
Franklin Eugene Lewis, 88, of Rockford Road died Dec. 27, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Feb. 3, 1912, in Creston, a son of Emerson Franklin and Ethel Powell Lewis. He attended Appalachian College. He was a resident of High Point since the late 1930s. He was co-founder of Tex Elastic Corp. and was instrumental in establishing several other area businesses. He was a member of First Baptist Church in High Point and the Thayer Sunday School Class. On Aug. 29, 1936, he was married to the former Evelyn Little, who preceded him in death March 7, 1997, after 60 years of marriage.
Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Patty Morris and her husband, Jim, of High Point, Linda Young and her husband, Richard C. Shaw II, of Jamestown, and Laura Ritch and her husband, Scott, of Greensboro; a son and daughter-in-law, Craig Lewis and his wife, Becky, of Summerfield; a sister, Mrs. Willa Grey Connor of High Point; a brother, J.R. Lewis of Marietta, Ga.; four grandchildren, Ashley Pate, Shelly Atkinson, Michael Morris and Amanda Morris; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church by the Rev. William Slater. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Sechrest Funeral Home, E. Lexington Avenue, High Point.

Jeter Wayne Montgomery, 52, of 627 Colonial Drive died Dec. 26, 2000.

Lloyd Phillips Sr.
Lexington
Lloyd E. Phillips Sr., 84, of Old U.S. 64 died Dec. 27, 2000, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, after a serious illness of two weeks.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Friendship United Methodist Church. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Rev. Lois Shaw
High Point
The Rev. Lois Paulette Stavely Shaw, 55, died Dec. 20, 2000, at her residence.
She was born Sept. 25, 1945, in Garden City, Mich., a daughter of Leon Roby Stavely and Viola Frances Potts Stavely. She was the third of five children born to her parents. For a number of years, she worked as a paralegal and executive legal secretary.
In 1985, she graduated suma cum laude with an associate of science degree in management from Walters State Community College in Morristown, Tenn. In 1989, she graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in management from Tusculum College in nearby Greenville, Tenn. In the summer of 1990, she began seminary at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, S.C. In the spring of 1994, she was approved for ordination and graduated from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary with a master of divinity degree.
While awaiting a call to a congregation, she joined the faculty and staff of Mitchell Community College in Statesville and was a supply preacher for congregations in the North Carolina Synod of the ELCA. In September 1997, she received a formal letter of call from St. Michael Lutheran Church in High Point. On Oct. 24, 1997, she was ordained at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Morristown by the Rev. Leonard Bolick, bishop of the N.C. Synod of the ELCA. She served as pastor of St. Michael Lutheran Church from September 1997 to December 1999. She was preceded in death by her father.
Surviving are her husband, the Rev. C. Pierson Shaw Jr., pastor of Christ Lutheran Church of Winston-Salem: her mother, Viola Dieke; a sister, Inez Klein; two brothers, Rick and Mike Stavely; two sons, Jonny Lee Wendell and Stephen Michael Wendell; and a daughter, Paulette Frances Wendell.
Funeral will be 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, Winston-Salem, by the Rev. Leonard Bolick. Burial will be 4 p.m. Saturday at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Glendale Springs.

Carl Sherwood
Kernersville
Carl M. Sherwood, 64, of 267 Winsome Drive died Dec. 26, 2000, at his residence.
He was born Oct. 16, 1936, in Guilford County, a son of Roy Melvin Sherwood and Etta McIntyre Sherwood Kapp. He was a lifelong resident of this area. He was employed in sales for more than 40 years and was retired five years. He was a kind and generous man with a big heart that was loved by many and will be missed greatly. He was of the Baptist faith. In 1957, he was married to Shelby Jean Grant, who preceded him in death. He also was preceded in death by his father.
Surviving are his life-time friend and caregiver, Fred Fallenstein of the residence; his three children, Mrs. Candy S. Roberts and her husband, Jimmy, of Kernersville, Ms. Kimberly Sherwood Roberts of Wilmington and Steven Carl Sherwood and his wife, Donise, of Thomasville; seven grandchildren, Bambi Sherwood Roberts, Jeremy Lee Sherwood, David Joshua Thornton, Nicodemus Tyler Sherwood, Fleming Elyse Roberts, Aaron Landon Roberts and Shelby Christian Sherwood; his mother of High Point; and a brother, James Roy Sherwood of Lexington.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, by the Rev. Mark Klass. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Drive, High Point, N.C. 27262.

Adrienne Turner
High Point
Ms. Adrienne Lynette Turner, 26, of 1301-B E. Green Drive died Dec. 27, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital, where she had been a patient one week. She was in declining health one year.

Robert Welch Sr.
High Point
Robert Coy Welch Sr., 83, of 302 Ridgecrest Drive died Dec. 26, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born March 16, 1917, in Winston-Salem, a son of Henry Gray and Maggie Blakely Welch. He was a resident of High Point the majority of his life. He retired from J.P. Stevens and he also was a steam-fitter for 31 years with John Davis Plumbing and Heating. He was a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church and the Men’s Bible Class. He was a member of Numa F. Reid Lodge 344 A.F.&A.M. for 25 years, the Woodmen of the World. He worked in the ship yards in Baltimore, Md., during World War II. In May 1938, he married Ruth Hutchins Welch, who preceded him in death June 20, 2000. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Lola Smith; and his three brothers, Monroe Welch, William F. Welch and Henry G. Welch Jr.
Surviving are two sons, Robert C. Welch Jr. and his wife, Chloe, of Bowling Green, Ky., and Thomas J. Welch and his wife, Diane, of High Point; three sisters, Mary West and Mildred Byrd, both of Lexington, and Nancy Sexton of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Thomas C. Welch of High Point and Jack R. Welch of Trinity; two grandsons, Robert C. (Trip) Welch III of High Point and Jason T. Welch of Costa Mesa, Calif.; a granddaughter, Jennifer T. Welch of Brooklyn, N.Y.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Lebanon United Methodist Church by the Rev. Roland Jones. Entombment will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point and other times at the residence.
