Thomas English Jr.

Thomas Roland English Jr. 63, of 501 Trindale Road died at 12:02 p.m. Jan. 27, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Aug. 8, 1937, in Randolph County, a son of Thomas Roland and Faye Walker English Sr. A resident of Archdale most of his life, he was the former owner of English Motors (Ford dealership), former member of the board of trustees of Guilford College, Archdale Friends Meeting and Perpetual Savings and Loan. He was past president of High Point Country Club, first planning and zoning chairman of the city of Archdale, and former member of High Point Rotary Club. He was past president of Springfield Memorial Association. He was a graduate of Guilford College and a member of Archdale Friends Meeting. On Aug. 22, 1959, he married Kay Carroll, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are two sons, Thomas Roland English III and wife, Amy, of Shelby and Charles Carroll English and wife, Lori, of Trinity; two brothers, Nereus Clark English III of Southmont and James Walker English of High Point; his mother of Friends Home at Guilford College; and two grandchildren, Landen Charles English and Morgen Faith English.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Archdale Friends Meeting by the Rev. Scott A. Wagoner. Private inurnment will be in Springfield Friends Columbarium. Visitation will be 5:30-7 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale.
Memorials may be directed to Archdale Friends Meeting, 114 Trindale Road, Archdale, N.C. 27263.

Jay Hohn Sr.
Archdale
Jay Sylvester Hohn Sr., 81, of 2392 Hohn Road died at 2:50 p.m. Jan. 27, 2001, at his home following an illness of several months.
He was born May 15, 1919, in Randolph County, a son of Emil Jay and Ethel Davis Hohn. He had been a resident of the Cedar Square community most of his life and was a retired dairy farmer. He was a graduate of Trinity High School, attended High Point College and was a member of Cedar Square Friends Meeting. On Sept. 16, 1939, he married Evelyn Lackey, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Janet Hohn and husband Lloyd Richardson of Anchorage, Alaska, Mrs. Elmer (Barbara) Farlow of Sophia, Mrs. Al (Linda) English of Archdale, and Mrs. Dan (Deborah) Beasley of Greenville, S.C.; two sons, Jay S. Hohn Jr. and wife, Linda, of Cedar Square and David Milton John of Cedar Square; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Minnie Robertson of Archdale.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cedar Square Friends Meeting by the Rev. Ben A. Hurley. Burial will be in the Meeting House Cemetery. The body is at Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale and will be placed in the meeting house 30 minutes prior to the service. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont Inc., 1801 Westchester Drive, High Point, N.C. 27262 or to Cedar Square Friends Meeting, 7546 Harlow Road, Archdale, N.C. 27263.
Grandsons will be pallbearers.

Faye Leonard
Denton
Mrs. Faye Marie Morris Leonard died Jan. 27, 2001.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and at other times at the home.

Bennie Mills Sr.
Thomasville
Bennie Lee Mills Sr., 56, of 212 Washboard Road, Lot 19, died Jan. 26, 2001, at Britthaven of Forsyth.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. Tuesday at Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point.

Eula Savage
Trinity
Mrs. Eula Spencer Savage, 89, of 10152 Archdale Road, died at 2 p.m. Jan. 27, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital following declining health of several months.
She was born Sept. 2, 1911, in Randolph County, a daughter of George W. and Emma Peace Spencer. A homemaker, she lived in Archdale and Trinity all her life. She was a member of Mt. Gilead United Methodist Church and the Ladies Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Pearl S. Hill and Mrs. Ruth S. Ward; and one brother Cicero Spencer.
Surviving are two daughters, Ms. Nancy S. Buie of High Point and Mrs. Peggy S. Ledwell of 10156 Archdale Road; one sister, Mrs. Lucille Spencer of Trinity; and four grandchildren, Craig T. Ledwell and wife, Jacquelyn, Thomas Buie, Jay Robert Buie Jr. and Sherri L. Buie.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Gilead United Methodist Church by the Rev. Matthew J. Emory and the Rev. Charles B. Walker. Burial will be in Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church Cemetery. The body is at Cumby Family Funeral Service, 1015 Eastchester Drive, High Point, and will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home and at other times at the home of the daughter, Mrs. Peggy Ledwell.
Pallbearers will be Jack Blevins, Tom Crowson, Russell Draughn, Ken Jones, Richard Welborn and Keith White.
Memorials may be directed to Mt. Gilead United Methodist Church, c/o Mrs. Kathy Hughes, 5055 Snider Country Road, Trinity, N.C. 27370.
The family would like to express sincere thanks to the medical staff of High Point Regional Hospital for the care Mrs. Savage received during her illness.

M. Shepherd
Greensboro
Mrs. Maybell Faircloth Shepherd, 87, of 1610 Glenside Drive died Jan. 28, 2001, at Moses Cone Hospital.
She was born Nov. 14, 1913, in Harnett County, the daughter of John Calvin Faircloth and Lovie Moore Faircloth. She was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church and an enthusiastic member of the Goodwill Community Club.
Surviving are two daughters, June Callahan of McLeansville and Faye Banks of Greensboro; a son, Richard Shepherd and wife, Mildred, of Greensboro; a daughter-in-law, Margaret Shepherd Carr of Sanford; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm Street Chapel by the Rev. Larry Pugh. Burial will be in Lakeview Memorial Park. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Hillcrest Baptist Church, 3918 Baylor St., Greensboro, N.C. 27405 and to Hospice of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, N.C. 27405.

Gearlene Smith
Archdale
Mrs. Gearlene “Gerry” Vanhorn Smith, 63, of 4405 Knollwood Drive died Jan. 26, 2001, at her residence.
She was born June 13, 1937, in Burke County, a daughter of Coy and Wilma Chole Church Vanhorn. A homemaker most of her life, she attended Allen Jay Baptist Church. On March 23, 1956, she married James “Jim” Irvin Smith, who was former owner of Smith and Shore Service Station No. 2 in High Point. He survives of the residence.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two children, Mrs. Ann Marsh Small and husband, Lee, and Michael James Smith and wife, Melissa, all of Thomasville; her mother, Mrs. Wilma Chole Smith of High Point; and one grandson, Tyler James Smith.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale by the Rev. Harold Shives. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 4-A Oak Branch Drive, Greensboro, N.C. 27407.

Leona Smith
Virginia
Leona Lewis Smith, 95, of 2310 Croix Drive, died Jan. 27, 2001, at her home.
She was a daughter of Robert E. and Mrs. Lula Heath Lewis and the widow of Charlie Smith. She was a native of Pasquotank County and a former school teacher in the public school system. She also worked with her husband in the Charlie Smith Insurance Agency. She was a graduate of the University of North Carolina and was associated with City Road United Methodist Church and First Baptist Church in Elizabeth City. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Shellen Lewis Parker, and a brother, Robert E. Lewis II.
Survivors include her son, Charles Smith and wife, Ruth Ann, of Virginia Beach; one sister, Mary Heath Lewis Powell of Greensboro, N.C.; two grandchildren, Charles Christopher Smith of Charlotte, N.C., and Daniel Lewis Smith of Greensboro.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, N.C. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8 tonight at the funeral home and in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service. At other times, the family will be at 1008 W. Main St., Elizabeth City, N.C. 27909.

Wilson Strider
Archdale
Wilson Strider, 87, died Jan. 27, 2001.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Brower’s Wesleyan Church. Visitation will be 6-9 tonight at Ridge Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Strider, 1654 Hopewell Friends Road.

Pauline Byerly
Lexington
Mrs. Pauline Byerly, 79, of Arnold Road died at 7:36 p.m. Jan. 30, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Beulah United Church of Christ. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the residence of her daughter, Julia Byerly, 3819 Arnold Road.

James Goodrich
Archdale
James “Jimmy” Dewey Goodrich, 28, of Ashland St. died Jan. 30, 2001, at Randolph Hospital.
He was born May 17, 1972, in Baltimore, a son of Charles Dewey Goodrich and Linda Evans Page. He was formerly employed with Thomasville Metal Fabrication as a supervisor. He attended Highland Baptist Church.
Surviving are his mother of High Point; his father of Baltimore; his stepfather, Randy Page of High Point; his wife, Melissa Goodrich of Trinity; a daughter, Samantha Taylor Goodrich of Trinity; a sister, Cindy Pegram of High Point; a stepbrother, Shannon Page of Stanton, Ky.; a stepsister, Crystal Page of Greensboro; and several nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Harold C. Davis Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Chris Southern. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence of his mother, 1008-B Gaines Ave. or at the residence of his wife, 5118 Jordan Valley Road, Lot #80, Trinity.
Memorials may be directed to the Samantha Goodrich Trust Fund, c/o First Union Bank, Archdale Branch, 11613 N. Main St., Archdale, N.C. 27263.

Dorothy Gray
High Point
Mrs. Dorothy Idol Linville Gray, 79, of the Presbyterian Home died Jan. 30, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born Nov. 17, 1921, in Forsyth County, a daughter of Fred Russell and Neva Idol Linville. She lived in this area most of her life and attended High Point College. She was employed with Pymwymi Gifts as an operator. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Family Fellowship Sunday School Class. She was a sustaining member of the Jr. League for a number of years. On March 27, 1944, she married Joseph Hutchison Gray, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are a daughter, Carol Gray of High Point; three sons, Joseph Hutchison Gray Jr. of Raleigh, Fredrick Linville Gray of Decatur, Ga., and Charles Michael Gray of High Point; two brothers, Joseph D. Linville and F. Larry Linville of Winston-Salem; and four grandchildren, Hillary K. Gray, Allison J.T. Gray, J. Hutchison Gray III and Margaret L. Gray.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church by the Rev. Don Lloyd. Burial will be private. Visitation will be after the service Friday at the church.
Sechrest Funeral Service, 1301 E. Lexington Ave., is in charge of arrangements.
