Archie Tyson

Mr. Archie A. Tyson, 76, died Feb. 16, 2001 at Hospice of Union County.
He was born April 26, 1924 in Union County, a son of the late Robert Homer and Kate Redfearn Tyson. He was a World War II Navy veteran, a member of the Waxhaw Masonic Lodge and a member of the Mineral Springs United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Mrs. Lois Hemby Tyson, who died in 1987, and a brother, E.J. Tyson.
Survivors include a daughter, Gwen Starnes and husband Baxter of Waxhaw; son, Dr. Zan Tyson and wife Pamela of High Point; grandchildren, Rob Starnes, Stephanie Funderburk, Alex Tyson, David Tyson and Leigh Tyson; and brother, Homer S. Tyson.
Active Pallbearers will be Eddie Rodgers, Tim Richardson, Richard Tyson, Bobby Tyson, Tracy Tyson, and Burt Fincher. Honorary Pallbearers will be Vic Foster, Dr. James McGukin, John Jackson, Scott Rogers, Del DeLaney, and the men of Koinia Sunday School Class of Mineral Springs United Methodist Church.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at Mineral Springs United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jim Yow, Rev. Marsden Kitley, and his son, Dr. Zan Tyson. Burial will be in church cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. tonight at the McEwen Funeral Home in Monroe. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Union County, 700 W. Roosevelt Blvd., Monroe, N.C. 28110 or the Cancer Center, High Point Regional Health System, 601 N. Elm St., High Point, NC 27261.

Mack Wright
High Point
Mr. Mack Arthur Wright, Sr., of 702 Richland St., died Feb. 14, 2001 at his residence.
Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Clara Johnson Wright of Clio, S.C.; a lovely companion, Louise Williams of High Point; a son, Mack A. Wright Jr., of High Point; two daughters, Kim Denise Wright of High Point and Dorsina Lee of Schweinfurt, Germany; four brothers, John Wright of Charlotte, Marvin Wright of High Point, Ralph Wright of Clio and Dennis Wright of High Point; two sisters, Gladys Thomas of High Point, and Myrtle Wright of Brooklyn, NY; one step-sister, Ruth Thompson of Clio; four grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Living Water Baptist Church by the Rev. T. Johnson. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Mr. Wright will lie in state at the church from 2-3 p.m. and visitation will be 2:30-3 p.m. at the church. Hargett Funeral Service, High Point, is in charge of arrangements.

Lessie Carter
High Point
Mrs. Lessie Maddox Carter, 86, of 714 S. Elm St. died Feb. 15, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital, where she had been a patient 24 hours and in declining health four years.
She was born Dec. 15, 1914, in Commerce, Ga., a daughter of Louis and Addie Trasher Maddox. She resided in High Point most of her adult life and was a self-employed cosmetologist. She was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church, where she served faithfully before becoming ill. She was a member of the former Women’s Society of Christian Service, now United Methodist Women. She was a volunteer with the Red Cross Gray Ladies and as an aide at Fairview Elementary School. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Paul Carter, her four sisters and five brothers.
Surviving are her son, Thomas Carter, and his wife, Flossie, of High Point; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Geneva Craft of High Point; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, other relatives and friends.
Funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. James H. Graves. Burial will be in Carolina Biblical Gardens. Visitation will be 2 p.m. Monday at the church and other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Carter, 1131 Bridges Drive.
Haizlip Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Samuel Clinton
Bronx, N.Y.
Samuel Clayton Clinton, 57, of 446 E. 186th St., formerly of High Point, died Feb. 14, 2001, at his residence following a brief illness.
He was born March 31, 1943, in High Point, N.C., a son of Jefferson Clinton Sr. and Queen Esther Ingram Clinton, who both preceded him in death. He had resided in New York 37 years and was of the Baptist faith. He was a chef at the 2nd Avenue Kosher Delicatessen.
Surviving are a son, Christopher Clinton of Baltimore; 10 grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Doris A. Ware of High Point and Mrs. Isabell Vanrensalier of New York, N.Y. three brothers, Roger Clinton and Michael Clinton, both of High Point, and Timothy Clinton of New York, N.Y.; and other relatives and friends, among them Ms. Kathleen Warren, who was very special.
Funeral will be 11:30 a.m. in New York. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Linden, N.J.
Unity Funeral Chapel, 8th Avenue at 126 St., New York, N.Y. is in charge of arrangements.

Gloria Frazier
Lexington
Mrs. Gloria June Davis Frazier, 49, of Mayfair Road died Feb. 14, 2001.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Second Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Piedmont Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

James Hill
Stokesdale
James Thomas “Tommy” Hill, 62, died Feb. 16, 2001.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Haizlip Funeral Home.

Gerald Hunt
Thomasville
Gerald Hunt, 59, of 336 Paul’s Airport Road died Feb. 16, 2001, at his residence.
He was born Sept. 18, 1941, in Davidson County. He was employed by Carolina Kenworth in Greensboro as warranty administrator and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a volunteer and coach for the Davidson County Special Olympics and was the gymnastics coach for Team USA North Carolina in the 1999 Special Olympics World Game in Raleigh. He was a member of Rich Fork Baptist Church and the Disciples Sunday School Class. On Nov. 29, 1980, he was married to the former Jill Guin, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are two sons, Jeffrey “Jeff” Worth Hunt of Lexington and Gerald Scott Hunt of the residence; a sister, Mrs. Faye Young of Linwood; and a brother, Roger “Bobby” Hunt of Lexington.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today at Family Funeral Care Chapel by the Rev. Byron Barker. Burial will be private. Visitation will be at the funeral home today immediately after the service.
Memorials may be directed to Rich Fork Baptist Church, 3993 Old U.S. 29, Thomasville, N.C. 27360 or to Hospice of Davidson County, 524 S. State St., Lexington, N.C. 27292.

Virginia Jennings
Archdale
Mrs. Virginia Beatrice Porter Jennings, 72, of 3705 Luck Drive died Feb. 15, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born Sept. 1, 1928, in Carroll County, Va., a daughter of James Stewart and Julia Ann Sisk Porter, who both preceded her in death. She retired from Anvil Brand Inc. after 20 years of service and she also later retired from Henredon Furniture Industries with 25 years of service. She was of the Holiness faith and was a member of High Point Sundowners and Randolph Rambler’s Camping Clubs. On Sept. 21, 1946, she was married to Elmer Vernard Jennings who survives of the residence. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Rosaletta Elkins.
Also surviving are a son, Jim Jennings and his wife, Dorothy, of Thomasville; a granddaughter, Tabatha Donellen Jennings of Thomasville; a great-granddaughter, Kendre’; and a brother, Bradford “Zelmar” Porter of Carroll County.
Funeral will be 8 p.m. today at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, by the Rev. J.B. Jennings and the Rev. Randy Ingram. Visitation will be 6:30-7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Graveside service will be private.
Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society, 4-A Oak Branch Drive, Greensboro, N.C. 27407.

James Latham
Lexington
James “Jim” Edward Latham, 69, of 124 Valleyview Drive died at 5:07 a.m. Feb. 16, 2001, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital after declining health of two years.
Funeral will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Bethesda United Methodist Church. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 tonight at Davidson Funeral Home, Hickory Tree Chapel and other times at the residence.

Lewis Leder
Chapel Hill
Lewis Beebe Leder, 80, died Feb. 13, 2001, as a result of lung cancer.
He was a native of Brooklyn, N.Y. He had resided in Chapel Hill for the past 17 years. Thanks to Hospice, he was able to die peacefully at his residence in the presence of his beloved wife, Barbara and amidst the books and music he loved.
He was a highly respected physicist. After earning his bachelor of science degree in mining engineering from the University of Idaho, he pursued graduate studies in physics at Yale University. He went on to have a distinguished career as a physicist in both the public and private sector, holding many patents and publishing scores of articles in the fields of vacuum and low temperature physics. While a principal physicist at Xerox Labs in Rochester, N.Y., he made important contributions in the field of xenoradiography holding patents on the functions of liquid crystals for use in color xenoxraphy.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara Ann Leder; his son, Alan Joel Leder, and his wife, Jane, of Evanston, Ill.; a stepdaughter, Sophia Quintaner, and her husband, Jose, both of Cincinnati; two grandsons, Joshua of New York City and dear little Dylan, of Cincinnati; a sister, Renee Gilman of California; and a brother, Benjamin Leder of Florida.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Feb. 25 in Floral Garden Cemetery, High Point.
Memorials may be directed to UNC Hospice, P.O. Box 1077, Pittsboro, N.C. 27312.
Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Raleigh, are in charge of arrangements.

Cecelia Miller
Thomasville
Mrs. Cecelia Britt Miller, 75, of 744 Stratford Road died Feb. 16, 2001, at Liberty Wood Nursing Home.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel. Visitation will be 6-7:30 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Nancy Hill, 744 Stratford Road, Lexington.

Elizabeth Nance
High Point
Mrs. Elizabeth Nance died Feb. 11, 2001.
She was born in High Point, a daughter of Addison Eugene and Daisy Hyatt Wall. She was a resident of High Point until her marriage to Richmond Reid Nance April 16, 1937. They made their home in Winston-Salem. She and her husband joined Ardmore United Methodist Church in 1938. She was an active member of her church as long as she was healthy. She was employed with Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System for many years.
Surviving are her husband; and a daughter, Nancy Nance Stahl and her husband, Robert, both of Chandler, Ariz.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Ardmore United Methodist Church.
