Bernard Lane
Altavista, Va.
Bernard Bell Lane, 72, died Feb. 5, 2001, at his residence.
He was born Nov. 23, 1928, in Lynchburg, a son of Edward H. Lane Sr. and Myrtle Bell Lane, who both preceded him in death. He grew up in Altavista, attending the elementary school until entering Randolph Macon Academy, Front Royal, Va. He entered the U.S. Naval Academy graduating in June, 1950 with a commission of Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. After marriage, he served in Saudi Arabia and later returned to the family business in Altavista in January 1954. On March 12, 1987, he retired as chairman of the board of The Lane Co.
He was a lifelong member of Lane Memorial United Methodist Church (previously Broad Street Methodist Episcopal), where he served as a former Sunday school teacher. He was involved in church affairs at the local and state level, most recently serving as a trustee of the United Methodist Foundation of Virginia.
He and his wife established the Minnie and Bernard Lane Foundation in 1957, which serves as a wide variety of causes both local and international, emphasizing Christian relief and development, education, etc. Following his retirement from The Lane Co. he traveled extensively as a director and chairman of the board of several charities, the emphasis of which is meeting basic human needs and spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ.
He served on the boards of the Virginia Port Authority, Food for the Hungry Inc., Project Concern International and the Commission of Urological Research of Duke University Medical Center. He also served 17 years as a trustee of Randolph Macon Academy, Front Royal, Va., and on various state boards and commissions. He was preceded in death by two brothers, John Haden Lane and Landon Bell Lane.
Surviving are his wife, Minnie Basset Lane; three sons, William Ritter Lane and his wife, Kathleen, of Newport News, Douglas Bassett Lane and his wife, Susan, of Lynchburg, and Bernard Bell Lane Jr. and his wife, Lellen, of San Antonio, Texas; a daughter, Lucy Lane Corwin and her husband, Ted, of Hickory, N.C.; a brother, Edward H. Lane Jr. of Moneta; and 14 grandchildren.
He was the guardian of his wife’s cousin, Ann Matthews Lee.
A service of celebration will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lane Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jeff Allen. Visitation will be at the residence.

Willie Metz
Mooresville
Mrs. Willie Cook Metz, 100, formerly of W. Center Ave., Mooresville, died Feb. 3, 2001, at Evergreen Nursing and Retirement Center.
She was a native of Amity Hill in Iredell County, a daughter of William Pinkney and Fannie Sigman Cook, who both preceded her in death. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church, Mooresville, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, Circle leader and president of United Methodist Women. She also was preceded in death by her husband, H.C. Metz, in February 1971.
Surviving are a daughter, Annie Ruth Scott and her husband, Wesley, of Jamestown; three grandsons, Gregory Scott and his wife, Sherry, of Thomasville, Darrell Scott and his wife, Donna, of Charlotte and Mark Scott and his wife, Marcia, of Jamestown; three great-grandsons; and one great-granddaughter.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. today at Central United Methodist Church, Mooresville.
Memorials may be directed to Central United Methodist Church, 214 N. Academy St., Mooresville, N.C. 28115 or the charity of the donor’s choice.
Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, Mooresville, is in charge of arrangements.

Esther Bates
Lexington
Mrs. Esther Mae Everhart Bates, 85, formerly of Hoover Road, died Feb. 7, 2001, at Westwood Health and Rehabilitation Center in Archdale.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel. Visitation will be 2-3 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Rayvone Cullins
High Point
Rayvone Demetrius Cullins died Feb. 7, 2001.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Hargett Funeral Service Inc. of High Point.

Dennis Farlow
Asheboro
Dennis Edward Farlow, 81, died Feb. 6, 2001.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at High Pine Wesleyan Church. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Ridge Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Julius Haley
High Point
Julius Elbert Haley, 93, of 1300 Carolina St. died Feb. 7, 2001, at Evergreens Nursing Center Inc. in Greensboro.
He was born July 23, 1907, in Manning, S.C., a son of Isaac C. and Naomi Ella Holliday Haley. He was a resident of High Point most of his life. He was a former owner and operator of Reliable Trucking Co. for many years. At the time of his retirement, he was associated with S&W Motor Lines. On April 18, 1931, he was married to the former Lillie Baxley, who preceded him in death Feb. 17, 1997.
Surviving are two daughters, Annie Haley Boyles and her husband, Richard, of 1615 Bolingbroke Road, High Point, and Ruby Haley Ledbetter and her husband, Larry, of Memphis, Tenn.; a son, Roy J. Haley and his wife, Bonnie, of Manning; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Loyrea Haley Ridgeway of Manning; and a brother, Oliver C. Haley of Manning.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday in Floral Garden Park Cemetery by the Rev. Gene A. Phillips. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point.
Memorials may be directed to Green Street Baptist Church, Building Fund, 303 N. Rotary Drive, High Point, N.C. 27262.

Ruth Kennedy
Trinity
Mrs. Ruth Clayton Kennedy, 72, of 4568 Peace Road died Feb. 6, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was a Montgomery County native. She retired from Jarrett Stationery Co. as a clerk.
Surviving are her husband, Darrell Kennedy, of the residence; four sisters, Jeanette Poole of Troy, Ruby Myrick of West End, Sadie Clayton and Marie Mullinix, both of Troy; a stepson, Michael Kennedy, of Trinity; and two grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at First Wesleyan Church, N.C. 134 North, Troy, by the Rev. Douglas W. Beadle and the Rev. Ralph Clayton Jr. Burial will be in Southside Cemetery, Troy. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Troy, and other times at the residence of Sadie Clayton, 105 Morris St., Troy.

Phillip Lanier

Phillip W. Lanier, 40, died Feb. 7, 2001, at SunBridge of the Triad.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Cumby Family Funeral Service.

Elmer Livengood
Lexington
Elmer Lester “Toots” Livengood, 71, formerly of Hasty School Road, died at 4 a.m. Feb. 7, 2001, at Britthaven of Davidson after declining health of 10 years.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence, 6048 Hasty School Road.

Cynthia Lloyd
Thomasville
Mrs. Cynthia Deloris Lloyd, 62, of 409 Meredith St. died Feb. 3, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital, where she was a patient 23 day and in declining health two years.
She was born Dec. 22, 1938, in Bennettsville, S.C., a daughter of Jimmy and Carrie Bass Watson, who both preceded her in death. She was a resident of High Point all of her adult life. She was employed with Guilford County School System as a custodian at Ferndale Middle School. She also was employed part-time in the laundry room of High Point Regional Hospital. She was a member of Temple Memorial Baptist Church, where she was a member of Missionary Group #5.
Surviving are two daughters, Lucinda McCollum and Jacqueline (Harold) Williams, all of High Point; two brothers, Jesse Watson and Charles (Janie) Watson, all of Bennettsville, S.C.; two sisters, Rebecca Paige of Bennettsville and Bertha (Eli) Edwards of Jamaica, N.Y.; a granddaughter, Eboni Sturdivant; godparents, the Rev. and Mrs. Lawrence Curtis; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends, among them, Mattie Lilly and Harding Edwards, both of whom were very dear to her.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Temple Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Haywood T. Gray. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park. Visitation will be 7-8 p.m. Friday at Haizlip Funeral Chapel and other times at the residence.
Haizlip Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Violet McKinnish
Lexington
Mrs. Violet Everhart McKinnish, 86, of E. 9th St. died at 2:25 p.m. Feb. 7, 2001, at Lexington Memorial Hospital after declining health of three months.
Funeral will be 4 p.m. Friday at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the residence of his son, Gary McKinnish, 1526 Craver Road.

Ruth McSwain
High Point
Mrs. Ruth Everhart McSwain, 90, died Feb. 6, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born June 4, 1910, in Davidson County, a daughter of Charles Wilson Everhart and Martha Sparks Everhart. She was a lifelong resident of this area and a retired office worker. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where in 1931, she was married to W. Carl McSwain, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Bett McSwain Rogers, of Oak Island; a son, Larry McSwain of High Point; a grandson, Michael McSwain and his wife, Claire, of Greensboro; a sister, Mrs. Mary Nance of Thomasville; and two sisters-in-law, Aileen McSwain of Albemarle and Lois Bailey of New London.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery by the Rev. Robert Hann. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Memorials may be directed to First Presbyterian Church, 21 Randolph St., Thomasville, N.C. 27360.
