Mrs. Edith Sidney Lawrence “Babe” Hood, 94, of 1811 Georgetown Road, died Feb. 18, 2001, in Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.
She was born Feb. 24, 1906, in Milledgeville, Ga., a daughter of John Henry and Sidney Amanda Lawrence. She was a teacher for over 25 years in St. Augustine, Fla., having taught the third grade. She was a graduate of Georgia State College in 1925. After her son, Harry Lee Hood Jr., passed away in 1997, she established the Harry Lee Hood Research Fund at Wake Forest University’s School of Medicine for the department of orthopedic surgery. Also through her generosity, she also helped established the N.C. Triad affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. She was a member of Abbotts Creek Missionary Baptist Church. She was married in St. Augustine, Fla., on June 15, 1929, to Harry Lee Hood, who also preceded her in death in 1967.
Survivors are a grandson, Tam Masterson and his wife, Michelle, of Aiken, S.C.; two granddaughters, Mrs. Thuy Chisolm, and her husband, Rob, and Lan Marshall and her husband, James, both of Canada; three great-granddaughters, Samantha, Sidney Lee and Emma; three nieces, Mrs. Floyd (Nell) Harrington of Milledgeville, Ga., Mrs. Claud (Betty) Dyal of Vero Beach, Fla., and Mrs. Taylor (Sue) Bodkin of Sarasota, Fla.; three great-nieces, Emily Hendry, Amanda Wyatt and Scottie Floyd; seven great-nephews, Jay Harrington, Allen and Bill Dyal, Larry and John Westbrook, and Bart and Larry Bodkin; and a host of neighbors and friends.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Abbotts Creek Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Lee Stocks, the Rev. Jack Rose and the Rev. Roy Cantrell. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body is at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home, 10301 N. N.C. 109 (Wallburg Chapel) and will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27101 or the American Cancer Society.

Sammie Smarr
High Point
Sammie “S.B.” Smarr, 72, of 507 Underhill St., died Feb. 16, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Oct. 25, 1928, in York County, S.C., a son of Tom and Dora Smarr. He was a retired truck driver with Colonial Motor Freight Line and a retired porter with the Presbyterian Home. He was a graduate of Unity School in York County, S.C., and was of the Baptist faith. His wife, Iola H. Smarr, preceded him in death, along with his parents and two sons, Raymond Howze and Charlie J. Smarr; one grandson, James Mock; and one sister, Arbell Smarr.
Survivors include sons, David W. Howze (Hazel), Robert Howze, Bobby C. Berry (Ester), William R. Berry, James E. Berry, Samuel J. Smarr and John Howze (Patricia); daughters, Barbara Brevard and Miss Della Faye Smarr; sisters, Mrs. Dora Bell Smarr Saunder of York, S.C.; 33 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Friendship Baptist Church, 715 W. Willis St., by the Rev. J.W. Flake. Burial will be in Carolina Biblical Gardens. Public viewing of the body will be 3-9 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the service and at other times at the home. Gilmore Funeral Service, Winston-Salem, is in charge of arrangements.

Bessie Voncannon
Asheboro
Bessie Magalene Marion Voncannon, 77, died Feb. 17, 2001.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and at other times at the home.

Grace Beamon
High Point
Mrs. Grace Julia Richard Beamon, 87, died Feb. 20, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born Nov. 9, 1913, in Salisbury, a daughter of Thomas Henry and Bessie Jordan Richard, who both preceded her in death. She worked as a nursing assistant for many years in Waco, Texas, and retired from High Point Regional Hospital in 1975. She was a member of Albertson Road Baptist Church and a member of the Faithful Workers Sunday School Class.
Surviving are a son, Winfred Beamon and his wife, Connie, of Hamilton, Ohio; three grandchildren, Mike Beamon of High Point, Sheryl Beamon of Chicago and Jamie Beamon of Hamilton; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Mary King, Mrs. Helen Bowers and Mrs. Edna Beamon, all of High Point; and a brother, Howard Richard of High Point.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday in Floral Garden Park Cemetery by the Rev. Bruce Vaughn. Visitation will be at the residence of Mrs. Mary King, 613 Spruce St.
Cumby Family Funeral Service, Eastchester Drive, is in charge of arrangements.

Catherine Boyd
Greensboro
Mrs. Catherine Wright Boyd, 71, of 3617 Lewiston Road died Feb. 20, 2001, at Moses Cone Hospital.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Haizlip Funeral Home, High Point.

Inez Clark
Knightdale
Mrs. Inez Goodwin Clark, 89, of 103 Kingston Road, formerly of Spruce Street in High Point, died Feb. 20, 2001, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Smithfield.
She was born Dec. 17, 1911, in Guilford County, a daughter of Elbert Riley and Edith Kidd Goodwin. She was a lifelong resident of High Point until moving to Knightdale four years ago. She retired from Adams-Millis Inc. and later worked at Dillard Plastics. She was a member of Hayworth Memorial Wesleyan Church.
Surviving are a son, Dale Clark and his wife, Gayle, of Knightdale; and a granddaughter, Kim Clark.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday in Floral Garden Park Cemetery, High Point, by the Rev. David M. Emery. Visitations will be 12:30-1:30 p.m. Friday at Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point.
Memorials may be directed to Hayworth Memorial Wesleyan Church, 1696 Westchester Drive, High Point, N.C. 27262.

Gladys Curtis
High Point
Mrs. Gladys E. Curtis, 87, of 406 Woodrow Ave. died Feb. 21, 2001, at her residence.
She was born Feb. 22, 1913, in Guilford County, a daughter of Walter and Mary Hassell Edwards. She was a lifelong resident of High Point. She was employed with the Dollar Store for 35 years. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church. She was married to Glenn A. Curtis, who died in 1957.
Surviving are two daughters, Barbara L. Curtis of High Point and Beverly A. Owens and her husband, Dave, of Greensboro; a sister, Zella Bartenfield and her husband, Claude, of Asheboro; two grandchildren, Wendi Grant and Kimberly Owens; three great-grandchildren, Austin, Logan and Madison Grant.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, by the Rev. Earl Hanks. Burial will be in Oakwood Municipal Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Timothy Davis
High Point
Timothy D. Davis, 32, of Old Mill Road died Feb. 21, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born May 3, 1968, in Kenton County, Ky., a son of Johnnie and Wilma Jean Sledge Davis. He was a resident of Cincinnati prior to moving to High Point in 1990. He was married to the former Amy Gerwe, who survives of the residence. He was a loving husband, father, son-in-law, brother and friend. He was always there for family and friends.
Also surviving are his son, Timothy Michael Davis of the residence; four brothers, David Davis, Ray Davis, Tom Davis and Bobby Davis, all of Cincinnati; two sisters, Angie Brewer and Joann Campbell, both of Cincinnati; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Jo Gerwe, of High Point; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, by the Rev. Todd T. Brock. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Robert Evans
Trinity
Robert Baxter Evans, 94, formerly of Graybrier Nursing and Retirement Center and of 5419 Tobacco Road, died Feb. 19, 2001, at High Point Care Center, where he was a resident for a month and in declining health a year.
He was born Feb. 18, 1907, in Randolph County, a son of Robert and Susie Evans. He was a lifelong resident of his native county. He was employed for many years as a section worker with Southern Railway. He retired from Eckerd Drugs in the mid-1970s, after being employed with that firm for a number of years as custodian and delivery-man. He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Trinity until his health began to decline. His wife of 69 years preceded him in death Jan. 1, 2000.
Surviving are four sons, O’Neal (Carolyn) Evans, of Danville, Va., Ashley Evans of Trinity, Ronald (Teresa) Evans, of High Point, and Harold (Kathleen “Penny”) Evans, of Jamestown; four daughters, Treva (Erby) Oglesby of Asheville, Eva Evans and Margaret Naomi (Walter) Wilson, both of Kernersville, and Ethel Evans of Winston-Salem; 15 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Ella Mae Cunningham of Washington, D.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, other relatives and friends.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church by the Rev. James Harris Jr. and the Rev. William Hill. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8 p.m. at Haizlip Funeral Chapel, High Point, and other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Evans, 1712 Chatfield Drive, Jamestown. The family will assemble at 2:15 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home for the procession to the church.

Lori Floyd
Lexington
Mrs. Lori Lopp Floyd, 25, died at 6:58 a.m. Feb. 21, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at First Reformed United Church of Christ. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 tonight at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the residence of her parents, 460 R.B. Sink Road.

Helen Hargrove
High Point
Ms. Helen Hargrove, 50, of 1117 Carter St. died Feb. 19, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, after a brief illness.
She was born Aug. 23, 1950, a daughter of George and Lula Hawkins Talley, who both preceded her in death. She also was preceded in death by her husband, James Hargrove; a sister, Gwendolyn; a brother, Alvin Glen; two nephews, Antwain Chapman and Anthony Talley; and a niece, Kassie Johnson.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Wanda (Demitrius) Hargrove; two sons, James (Kissie) Hargrove and Keith (Tawana) Hargrove; four grandchildren, Brittany Johnson, Osha Gray, Dimitra McDonald and Yasmine Brown; three sisters, Virgie (Willie) Brown, Gloria (James) Glover of High Point and Iva Davis of Thomasville; seven brothers, George (Janice) Talley, Danny (Diane) Talley, Larry (Jackie) Talley, Melvin, William, Wayne Talley, all of High Point and Marvin (Miriam) Talley of Atlanta; her grandmother, Mrs. Nora B. Hawkins of Bayshore, N.Y.; three uncles; seven aunts, 21 nieces; 14 nephews; 10 great nieces; 11 great nephews; a loyal family friend, Ben Jiggetts; a devoted caregiver and Godson, Dwight Jackson; her pet dog, Sassy; other relatives, John Hawkins, Robert Talley, Cephus Hawkins, Fay Beynard, Cora Palmer, Mamie Hawkins and Ruby Hawkins; and many other friends, including her best friend, Vivian White.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, 106 Smith St., Thomasville, by the Rev. H.N. Goode. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

Bertha Harris
High Point
Mrs. Bertha Lyles Harris, 73, of 1203 Cedrow Drive died Feb. 19, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital, where she was a patient two days.
She was born July 6, 1927, in Anson County, N.C., a daughter of Moses and Carrie James Lyles, who both preceded her in death. She resided in Patterson, N.J., for many years and moved her residency to High Point 10 years ago. She was a faithful member of Brown New Calvary Baptist Church in Thomasville, where she was a member of the Gospel Choir and the Echoes of Eden. She was preceded in death by her only son, W.J. Harris, 12 years ago; two sisters; and two brothers.
Surviving are her husband, Wiley Harris of the residence; a daughter, Mrs. Annie Ruth Melton of Patterson; 10 grandchildren, among them, Darcell Marshall, who also was her caregiver; 17 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Martha Powell and her husband, Elder James E. Powell, of Danville, Va., and Mrs. Stella Marshall of Morven; a son-in-law, Prentice Melton of Patterson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, other relatives and devoted friends.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Brown New Calvary Baptist Church, Thomasville, by the Rev. Moses Caldwell. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church and other times at the residence.
Haizlip Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
