Gladys Foster

Mrs. Gladys Shanklin Foster, 89, of 1915 S. Elm St., died Feb. 26, 2001, at Five Oaks Nursing Center in Concord.
She was born Oct. 21, 1911, in Orange County, a daughter of Joe and Nettie Ray Shanklin. She lived in High Point most of her life and worked as a seamstress for Sara Lee Corp. until retirement in 1993. She was a member of Green Street Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, Thomas “Tom” M. Morton Jr. of Concord; two brothers, Ernest “Pete” Fritts and his wife, Betty, and James “Jim” Fritts and his wife, Dale, all of High Point; and three grandchildren, Bradley Scott Morton and his wife, Kris, Kelly Elizabeth Morton and Wendy Morton Combs and her husband, Alec.
Crypt side service will be 1 p.m. Thursday by the Rev. James M. Capps in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. No visitation is scheduled.
Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
Sechrest Funeral Service, 1301 E. Lexington Ave. is in charge of arrangements.

Henry Holm
High Point
Henry Alvin Holm, 98, of 2511-F Suffolk Ave., died Feb. 26, 2001, at Maryfield Nursing Home.
She was born Dec. 22, 1902, in Bemidji, Minn., a son of Nickalie Hanson Holm and Lena Aukrust Holm. He graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1928. He was a salesman for Simmons Hardware and Shapleigh Hardware in St. Louis, Mo., from 1946 until 1960. He was owner and operator of High Crest Hardware Store in Rockford, Ill., from 1955 until 1970. He then moved to Dallas, Texas, and then to High Point in 1977. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II in the Quartermaster General’s Captain Office with the 76th Infantry Division. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Masonic Blue Lodge. He was a Shriner member of Tebala Shrine in Rockford, Ill. He was a former member of the High Point Host Lions Club and a member of Christ United Methodist Church. On Oct. 3, 1942, he married Lura Schmidt, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Christ United Methodist Church by the Rev. Glenn Myers, the Rev. Lloyd Hunsucker and the Rev. Hubert Brown. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Sechrest Funeral Home, E. Lexington Avenue.
Memorials may be directed to Christ United Methodist Church, 1300 N. College Drive, High Point, N.C. 27262 or Maryfield Nursing Home, 1350 Greensboro Road, High Point, N.C. 26260.

JoAnne McManus
High Point
Mrs. JoAnne Myers McManus, 57, of Evergreens Nursing Center Inc., formerly of 505 Ellwood Drive, died Feb. 25, 2001, at the center.
She was born in High Point, a daughter of James and Mary Frances Lawrence Myers. She was a graduate of William Penn High School and attended Guilford Community College, now Guilford Technical Community College. She was an office specialist with North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Co. for several years prior to failing health. She was a member of Baldwin’s Chapel Seventh Day Adventist Church and served as former assistant director of the children’s choir.
Surviving are two daughters, Ms. CarVette McManus and Ms. Daphine McManus of High Point; a granddaughter, Emory McManus of High Point; her parents of High Point; two brothers, the Rev. Thomas L. Myers and his wife, Brenda, of High Point, and Sgt. Lawrence F. Myers, U.S. Air Force, and his wife, Mercedes, of Crestview, Fla.; a sister, Mrs. Carole Yvonne Roberts and her husband, Wayne, of Willingboro, N.J.; an uncle, Bishop Benjamin Lawrence and his wife, Bettye, of Cleveland, Tenn; and nieces, nephews, a number of cousins, other relative and friends.
Funeral will be 12:30 p.m. Friday at Baldwin’s Chapel Seventh Day Adventist Church by the Rev. Mark E. Ghoston and Elder Marsena Davis. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be noon Friday at the church and other times at the residence of her daughter, 505 Ellwood Drive.
Haizlip Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lonnie Marion

Lonnie Marion, 92, died Feb. 26, 2001.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Browers Wesleyan Church. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Ridge Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Larry Mowery
High Point
Larry Ronald Mowery, 63, of 109-A Cornell Drive, died Feb. 26, 2001, at Wesley Long Community Hospital.
He was born June 1, 1937, in Guilford County, a son of Avery and Ruby Hester Mowery. He attended First Wesleyan Church and was a U.S. Army veteran.
Surviving are three daughters, Karen Redmon and her husband, Steve, of Greensboro, Shannon Billings of Thomasville, and Jennifer Lee and her husband, David, of Greenville; a sister, Brenda Kinnan and her husband, Bill, of Ohio; two brothers, Jerry Mowery of Winston-Salem and David Mowery of South Carolina; five grandchildren, Jonathan and Sarah Billings, Kelsey and Candace Redmon and Nicholas Lee; and a dear friend, Jackie Neal.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, by the Rev. Bobby L. Loving. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Mrs. Ovilla “Ollie” Evelyn Monteith Payne, 74, of Old Linwood Road, died at 3:50 a.m. Feb. 27, 2001, at Centerclair Nursing Home after a year of declining health.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence of her daughter, 464 Lake Drive.

Donald Willis Tetter, 65, of 526 Cow Palace Road died Feb. 26, 2001.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Piedmont Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

William Williams
Lexington
William Douglas “Doug” Williams, 70, of Brian Center Nursing Home, formerly of Carolina Avenue, died at 1 a.m. Feb. 27, 2001, at the center after declining health of a year.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the residence of his sister, Margaret Clodfelter, 206 Lakewood Drive.

Wyatt Coggin Sr.
Thomasville
Wyatt Davis Coggin Sr., 72, of 618 Dogwood Road died March 1, 2001, at his residence.
He was born June 4, 1928, in Montgomery County, a son of George B. Coggin Sr. and Carrie Myrtle Tysinger Coggin. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He retired from Bentley Machinery of High Point. He was a member of Carolina Memorial Baptist Church. On Aug. 4, 1951, he was married to Carolyn Smith, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Deborah C. Whitt and her husband, David Whitt, of Archdale, and Mrs. Linda C. Jarrett and her husband, Foy Jarrett Jr., of the Wallburg Community; a son Wyatt D. Coggin Jr. and his wife, Sherry, of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Kathleen Smith of Thomasville and Dorothy Lee Parrish of Fort Wayne, Ind.; and two grandsons, Daniel Lee Whitt and Andrew Wayne Coggin.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel by the Rev. Ken Evans. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

M. Hedgecock Jr.
High Point
Marvin “Bub” Barney Hedgecock Jr., 76, of Barney Road died March 1, 2001, at the High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born in Forsyth County, May 2, 1924, a son of Marvin Barney Hedgecock Sr. and Iona Davis Hedgecock, who both preceded him in death. He was a lifelong resident of the Horneytown Community. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served with the 82nd Airborne Division. He began his sales career with Neill Rambler, later working at Neill Pontiac, Van York Pontiac and Lyles Chevrolet. He was a member of Abbotts Creek Primitive Baptist Church. On June 26, 1954, he married Mary McDaniel. He was preceded in death by six sisters, Annie Coe, Hattie Greenwood, Grace Wood, Pauline Peele, Ruby Ingle and Mary Brooks; and three brothers, Jimmy Hedgecock, Ivey “Nick” Hedgecock and Wesley “Wes” Hedgecock.
Surviving are his wife of the residence; a daughter, Cindy Brewer and her husband, Thomas, of Barney Road; a son, Marvin “Marty” Hedgecock III and his wife, Diane, of Summerfield; a grandson, Dalton Hedgecock; three granddaughters, Mallory Hedgecock, Lauren Brewer and Katie Brewer; a sister, Mrs. Lizzie Seagraves of High Point; and many nieces, nephews, brothers-in-laws and sisters-in-laws.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Abbotts Creek Primitive Baptist Church by Elder Steve Nichols. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be at Harold C. Davis Funeral Home until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

O. Hedgecock Jr.
High Point
Orest Joseph “O.J.” Hedgecock Jr., 67, of 3911 N. Main St. died Feb. 28, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital after several years of declining health. He has now gone to meet his Savior and Lord.
He was born Sept. 21, 1933, on his grandparent’s farm (presently known as Swansgate), a son of Orest Joseph Hedgecock Sr. and Ruth Payne Hedgecock, who both preceded him in death. He resided in High Point most or his life and attended Oak View School and High Point Central High School. He was well known for his great knowledge in gun making and designing. He held several patents, one being “The Hedgecock Star” a cut in a diamond design, and also a patent for diecasting metal.
He was a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church. He was a personal friend of Elvis Presley and numerous country music stars. He was a contender for the 1952 Olympics in weight lifting when a job-related accident changed all that. He was an avid race car driver at Seagrove Drag Strip, as well as a competitor in many other sports. He was very active with the Oak Hollow Boat Drags until his health declined. He was employed many years with Styrex Industry and Ferlin Mold. He also owned and operated Hedgecock Technical Welding. He was preceded in death by his three sisters, Faye Baxley, Pearl Wade and Sarah Rich; and a brother Denny Hedgecock.
Surviving are three sons, Orest Joseph “Joe” Hedgecock III and his wife, Ginger, of Winston-Salem, Christopher “Chris” Mark Hedgecock Sr. and his friend, Phyllis Vanderburg, of the residence and David Vernon Hedgecock of High Point; a daughter, Cynthia Jean (Bug) Williams of High Point; six grandchildren, Tina Malcom, Mark Hedgecock, Tiffany Dennis, Jason Dennis, Ryan Curtis Mann and Dennis Christopher Hedgecock; a great-granddaughter, Cheyanne Malcom; four sisters, Betsy Brown, Barbara Wiles, Mary Kathryn Brown and Joy Sample; a brother, Tommy Hedgecock; and 34 nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Trulite Baptist Church by the Rev. William Paul Sparks and the Rev. Ardis D. Payne. Burial will be in Abbotts Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Home, High Point.
