Oscar Miller Sr.
Snow Hill - Oscar Patrick “Pete” Miller Sr., 88, died Nov. 28, 1999, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital.
He was the son of Oscar and Janie Patrick Miller of Snow Hill. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Warner Frizzelle Miller in 1958. He was engaged in the retail furniture business for most of his life. Quinn-Miller and Co., founded by his father in 1908, was one of a number of furniture stores in eastern North Carolina owned by the Quinn and Miller families. The Snow Hill store was sold in 1990.
He was an active member of the Snow Hill Presbyterian Church, where he had served as deacon and an elder and for many years served as the church treasurer. He attended services with great regularity until he was hospitalized in September.
Surviving are three sons, Oscar Patrick “Pete” Miller Jr. and his wife, Patricia, Paul Frizzelle Miller and his wife, Caroline, and Jesse Warner Miller, all of Snow Hill; five grandchildren, Patrick Christian Miller and his wife, Rebecca, of Snow Hill, David Winfield Miller and his wife, Michele, of Newport, Susan Wilkerson Miller of Greenville, Barbara Elizabeth Miller of Raleigh and Jamie Patterson Miller of Snow Hill; three great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Sophia Frizzelle Edmondson and her husband, Jack, of Maury, and Grace Brown Frizzelle of Kinston; two devoted cousins, Doris Holden Hinson and Mary Jane Mewborn Exum and her husband, Wick, all of Kinston; and two longtime family friends and neighbors, James and Elsie Turner of Kinston.
Graveside service will 2 p.m. Wednesday in Snow Hill Cemetery by the Rev. Bronson Matney. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. tonight at Taylor-Edwards Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Pete and Patty Miller, 411 Greenbridge Road.
Memorials may be directed to Snow Hill Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 2, Snow Hill, N.C. 28580 or to the Snow Hill Rescue Squad or the charity of one’s choice.

Z. Wilson
Carolina Beach - Zachary Esmond “Zack“ Wilson, 40, died Nov. 28, 1999, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
He was born May 28, 1959, in Guilford County, a son of Wilbert W. and Amelia McBride Wilson of Carolina Beach. He was the second shift manager at the IHOP Restaurant on Market Street and had been employed with many of the local restaurants.
Survivors besides his mother include a brother, Phillip L. McBride of Lakeland, Fla.; a niece and nephew, Teresa Boone and Phillip Larry McBride Jr.; a sister, Sherry Wilson Mathis of Hampstead; a niece, Jennifer Mathis; two nephews, Brian Carter, Douglas Mathis; and his significant other Nelson Etienne III.
Funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Service, Oleander Chapel, by the Rev. Mike Meshaw. Visitation will be 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
Memorials may be directed to the care of his mother, Amelia McBride Wilson, 314 Atlanta Ave., Carolina Beach, NC 28428.

Harry Beck
Carson City, Nev. - Harry “Von” Beck died Nov. 19, 1999.
He was born Nov. 8, 1918, in Thomasville, N.C., a son of Fletcher H. and Winnie Clodfelter Beck. He was educated in Thomasville City Schools and N. C. State College. In 1940, he was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant. in the U.S. Army and served in Iceland and the European war theater during World War II. In 1964, he retired lieutenant colonel and moved to Tucson, Ariz., where he taught high school. In 1945, he married Betty Hill of Morgantown, W.Va.
Surviving are a daughter, Suzanne DeClerk of Carson City; a son, Jeffrey Beck of Las Vegas; grandchildren, Monica and Austin Beck; a sister, Lillian B. Anderson of Thomasville; two sisters-in-law, Frances Royals Beck and Addie Ellis Beck; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Nov. 16, 1999; his parents; and two brothers, Clayborne C. Beck and Lawrence A. Beck.
A memorial will be held in Tuscon.

Lucille Browne
Greensboro - Miss Lucille Browne, 89, of 2501-B Patriot Way died Nov. 29, 1999, at Moses H. Cone Hospital.
She was born May 4, 1910, in Jamestown, a daughter of Walter C. and Molsie Lineberry Brown. A lifelong resident of Jamestown and Greensboro, she was a graduate of High Point College and received her master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and taught at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Appalachian State University. She was active in numerous state and national professional organizations. She served as president of North Carolina Personnel and Guidance Association and in 1967 was the first recipient of the Ella Stevens Barrett Award for her outstanding contribution to guidance services.
She served on the board of Family and Children’s Services of Greensboro for 27 years, serving as president for one year. She was a member of the board of the Mental Health Association and an active member of the YWCA board for a number of years. A member of Altrusa Club of Greensboro since 1956, she served as president from 1964-1966. She was a charter member of the Beta Beta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gramma Society, having served as president from 1959-1960.
A lifelong member of Jamestown United Methodist Church, she served on various boards and committees. She began her career in education in Thomasville and High Point city schools. In 1944, she accepted a position as a educational coordinator at Grimsley High School in Greensboro. In 1953, she implemented the first high school guidance program in the Greensboro City Schools System and in 1966 the first elementary guidance program in Greensboro City Schools and in North Carolina. In 1970, she became the first female assistant superintendent in the Greensboro Public Schools when she was appointed superintendent for Public Personnel Services.
Retiring from Greensboro Public Schools in 1975, she became an active volunteer in community agencies. She was on the board of United Services for Older Adults and was presented the Senior Leadership Award from Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department. She was preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers.
She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Jamestown United Methodist Church by Dr. C. M. Worthy and the Rev. Richard Howie. Burial will be 1:15 p.m. in Deep River Friends Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church following the services.

Curtis Carter
Lexington - Curtis Dillard Carter, 63, of 194 Koonts Road died Nov. 29, 1999, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem.
Funeral will be 12:30 p.m., Friday at Davidson Funeral Home, Hickory Tree Chapel. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Helga Dunlap
High Point - Mrs. Helga Vollmer Dunlap, 60, of 515 Player Drive died Nov. 30, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born Oct. 30, 1939, in Murrhardt, Germany, a daughter of Karl and Freda Binder Vollmer. In 1964, she was married to Rufus Hill Dunlap, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are two daughters, Susan Bofinger and her fiance, Keith, of Archdale and Caroline Condello and her husband, Rosario, of Germany; a son, Scotty Dunlap and his wife, Ingrid, of Winston-Salem; eight grandchildren; and several brothers and sisters.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point.

Fletcher Freeman
Lexington - Fletcher H. Freeman, 82, died Nov. 29, 1999.
Surviving is his wife, Eula Britts Freeman.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Timberlake Chapel at Piedmont Funeral Home.

Meredith Kearney
High Point - Mrs. Meredith Broderick Kearney, 81, of 1003 Robin Hood Road died Nov. 30, 1999, at her residence.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point.

Delpha Stanley
Sophia - Delpha Stanley, 65, resident of 4631 Allen Drive died Nov. 29, 1999, after several months of declining health.
He was born July 12, 1934, in Columbus County, a son of Thomas and Eva Low Stanley. He had been a resident of Archdale most of his life and had lived in Sophia for 15 years. Mr. Stanley was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force having served during the Korean War and was employed with MGM Transport. He was of the Baptist faith. On July 4, 1999, he married the former Patsy Wilson, who survives of the home.
Surviving are four sons, Gary Stanley of Trinity, Mike Stanley of Franklinville, Timmy Stanley of Level Cross and Scott Stanley of Sophia; two daughters, Mrs. Troy “Brenda” Jessie of Trinity and Mrs. Jerie “Deborah” Turner of Thomasville; one step-son, Ricky Gaddis of Sophia; one step-daughter, Mrs. Patsy Key of Sophia; three brothers, Thomas Stanley of Florida, Fred Stanley of Little River, S.C. and Ethridge Stanley of Savannah, Ga.; three sisters, Mrs. Geneva Stanley Hardy of Whiteville, Mrs. Mary Rowe of Morehead City and Mrs. Cleo Flowers of Wilmington; eighteen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. at Wayside Freewill Baptist Church by Rev. Claude Garrett, Sr.. Burial will follow in the Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. tonight at the Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale and at other times at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Deborah Turner, 504 Easy St., Thomasville.

Nellie Clayton
High Point - Mrs. Nellie Wooldridge Harper Clayton, 84, of 2604 Wexford Place died Nov. 30, 1999, at the Guilford Medical Associates, Greensboro. She had been in declining health since October.
She was born April 25, 1915, in Lynchburg, Va., a daughter of William Edward and Lillie Nash Wooldridge. A homemaker, she had been a resident of High Point for the past 29 years. She was a member of First Wesleyan Church and active member of Main Street United Methodist Church in Bedford, Va., where she served as president of the WSCS. Twice married, she was first married to Harry Harper, who preceded her in death. Her second marriage was to Raymond L. Clayton, who survives of the home.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Jacqueline Harper Meador and her husband, Raymond, of Forest, Va.; grandson, Raymond Meador Jr. and his wife, Elaine Walter, of Nashville, Tenn.; a granddaughter, Kimberley Meador Jennings and her husband, Arthur Ryland Jennings III, of Maidens, Va.; grandson, Arthur Ryland Jennings IV, of Maidens; brother, Cdr. Clarence Edward Wooldridge, of Lynchburg, Va.; and many other relatives. She was preceded in death by a half-sister, Laura Tweedy Moon.
Funeral will be 7:00 tonight at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, by the Rev. James C. Smith. Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday in Greenwood Cemetery, Bedford. Visitation will follow the service tonight.
Memorials may be directed to the charity of one’s choice.

Lexington - Mrs. Mae Coltrane Coble, 92, of Abernethy Center, formerly of Lexington, died Dec. 1, 1999 at the center.
Graveside service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday in Forest Hill Memorial Park.
Davidson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Myrtle Haley
Thomasville - Mrs. Myrtle Haley, 61, of 206 1/2 Broad St. died Nov. 30, 1999.
Funeral will be 11:00 a.m. Friday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel. Visitation will be at the funeral home 7-9 tonight.

High Point - Susan Lynn Hayden Jenkins, 37, died Nov. 30, 1999.
Funeral will we 2:00 Friday at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Asheboro.
