Billy Poley
Thomasville - Billy Jerum Poley, 93, of Britthaven of Davidson died at 3:42 p.m. Jan. 10, 2000.
He was born May 14, 1906, in New Haven, Conn., a son of George M. and Anna Poley. He was a retired pilot and flight instructor and a World War II veteran having served in the U.S. Army Air Corp. He was a member of the N.C. chapter of OX5 Club and the Q.B. Club. He was a member of Eagle Springs Baptist Church in Eagle Springs. On May 14, 1942, he married Walter Frye, who preceded him in death Jan. 24, 1991.
Surviving are a daughter, Ms. Dixie J. Fincannon of 208 Rockspring Drive.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, Winston-Salem by the Rev. Kenneth O’Niel. The body will be at Family Funeral Care. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight and other times at the residence of the daughter.
Memorials may be directed to the charity of one’s choice.

Jack Rice Jr.
Trinity - Jack Rice Jr., 81, formerly of Darr Road, died Jan. 9, 2000, at Hamlet Hospital, Hamlet. He had been in declining health for three years.
He was born Oct. 22, 1918, in High Point, a son of Jack Rice Sr. and Lottie Pridgen Rice, who preceded him in death. He was a former member of Williams Memorial CME Church. He was a longtime employee of Woodmark Originals and retired from Braxton Craven School in Trinity.
Surviving are two sons, Michael Rice and his wife, Debora, of Cleveland, Ohio, and David Rice and his wife, Annie, of Bedford, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Christopher Rice, Brandon Rice, Helen Rice, twins, Kenyana and Jason T. Rice, Jermain Rice, Courtney Rice, and Jason Rice; two great-grandchildren; a host of relatives; and a special friend, Mrs. Dorothy Price of Rockingham, who was his caretaker.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Haizlip Funeral Chapel by the Rev. William Thompson. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery. Visitation will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Frank Rush
Glenola - Frank Rush, 84, of 3264 Belo Rush Drive died Jan. 7, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital, where he had been a patient for four days. He had been in declining health for six months.
He was born in Randolph County on Aug. 18, 1915, a son of Samuel and Minnie Belo Rush. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and World War II. He also was a member of the Bethel Glenola United Methodist Church, where he was a former steward and a member of the United Methodist Men.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Alice Rush, of the home; three sons, Donald Green of Randleman, Odell Rush and Gary Rush, both of Glenola; and seven daughters, Mrs. Geneva (Donald) Davis and Mrs. Doreen (Winford) Miles of Trinity, Mrs. Frankie Maxine (John) McCormick of High Point, Mrs. Angela (Eric) Tucker of Greensboro, Mrs. Darlene (Myles) Moore of Hillsborough, Ms. Nancy Rush and Ms. Gina Rush of the home; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and special friends – among them, Kenneth, Roger and Curtis Green, who were more as sons.
Funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Bethel Glenola United Methodist Church by Rev. Charles Tyson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8 tonight at Haizlip Funeral Chapel and other times at the residence. Haizlip Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

George Sells
Kernersville - George Beauford Sells, 85, formerly of 4800 Abbotts Creek Church Road died Jan. 10, 2000, at Bradford Village East.
He was born Sept. 19, 1914, in Forsyth County, a son of George C. and Flora Hines “Foda” Sells, who preceded him in death. He was a farmer. He was a member of Abbotts Creek Missionary Baptist Church. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Sula Sells Blackwell; and five brothers, Dumont Sells, Louis Sells, Otis Sells, Odell Sells and Hubert Sells.
Surviving are four sisters, Ella Hedgecock of Kernersville, Hazel Sink of High Point, Doris Sells of Winston-Salem, and Bernice Mendenhall of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Abbotts Creek Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Lee Stocks and the Rev. Jack Rose. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at Hayworth-Miller Cain Funeral Home.
Memorials may be directed to Abbotts Creek Missionary Baptist Church Building Fund, 2816 Abbotts Creek Church Road, High Point, N.C. 27265.

Brandon Smith
Lexington - Brandon Tyler Smith, infant son of Bradley Dale Smith and Rita Christine Caldwell, died Jan. 7, 2000, in Lexington Memorial Hospital.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Davidson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Lexington City Cemetery.

Elma Tally
Asheboro - Mrs. Elma Zorada Auten Tally, 79, died Jan. 9, 2000.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Central United Methodist Church.
Ridge Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Annie Wilson
Staley - Mrs. Annie Freeman Patterson Wilson, 84, formerly of Archdale, died Jan. 8, 2000, at the University of North Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
She was born Jan. 9, 1915, in Randolph County, a daughter of Neil Bailey and Ora Richardson Freeman. She retired from Silver Knit Hosiery Co. in High Point. She was first married to Lonnie Patterson, who preceded her in death. She later married John Robert “Bob” Wilson, who also preceded her in death.
Surviving are a stepson, Randall Johnson and his wife, Cleo, of Archdale; a granddaughter, Johnia Callicutt and her husband, Rick, of High Point; three great-grandchildren; eight sisters, Mrs. Boyd (Mamie) Hare and Mrs. Harold (Nellie) Bean, both of Seagrove, Mrs. Lee B. Freeman, Mrs. James (Stacy) Cornelison, Mrs. Lonnie (Conie) King, Mrs. John Clark (Mildred) Chriscoe and Mrs. Leslie “Buster”(Rachel) Smith, all of Asheboro, and Mrs. Doyle (Gladys) McLeod of Star; three brothers, Joe G. Freeman, Dempsey Freeman and Wesley Freeman, all of Asheboro; 23 nieces and nephews; and 37 great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residences of Mr. and Mrs. Randall Johnson, 514 Belmont Drive, Archdale and Mrs. Mildred Chriscoe, 1085 Crestview Church Road, Asheboro.

Eulan Workman
Thomasville - H. Eulan Workman, 78, of 999 Ben Lee Road died Jan. 10, 2000, at Community General Hospital.
He was born July 28, 1921, in Davidson County, a son of Miles Madison and Dora Frances Workman. He was owner and operator of Workman Furnace Service. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, having served during World War II. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where he served as teacher of Baldwin Memorial Sunday School Class, lay leader and member of the administrative board. On July 19, 1947, he married Dorcas Ward, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Lisa Workman of Pilot School Road; a grandson, Chad Workman; a sister, Mrs. Paul (Nell) Hinkle of Thomasville; a brother, the Rev. M. Marion Workman of Pleasant Garden; and two sisters-in-law, Jean Workman of Thomasville and Bea Workman of New Port Richey, Fla.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jerry Webb. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. The body will be at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence.
Memorials may be directed to Trinity United Methodist Church, Destine for the Youth Department, 1107 Blair St., Thomasville, N.C. 27360.

Jennie Bivens
High Point - Mrs. Jennie Lee Welborn Bivens, 87, died Jan. 10, 2000, at Westwood Health and Rehabilitation Center, Archdale.
She was born July 20, 1912, in Archdale, a daughter of Jacob Lee and Martha Jane Davis Welborn. She was a resident of this area all her life. She attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and was a secretary with International Home Furnishing Center for many years. She was a member of First Baptist Church, a teacher in the Sunday school, a former deacon, and a member of the Radiant Club. On Dec. 28, 1935, she married Homer Gwynn Bivens, who preceded her in death July 28, 1979.
Surviving are a son, James R. Bivens and his wife, Glenda Jellé, two daughters, Mrs. Rick (Betsy) Hines of Archdale, and Mrs. Alfred T. (Martha Jane) Sink of Stantonsburg; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church by Dr. Bill Slater and the Rev. Bruce Hartgrove. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. The body will be at Sechrest Funeral Home until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
Memorials may be directed to First Baptist Church, 405 N. Main St., High Point, N.C. 27260.

Bertha Bryson
Detroit - Bertha Ann Bryson, 60, died Jan. 2, 2000, at her residence.
A former resident of High Point, she was the daughter of James Taylor and Annie Mae Johnson.
Services were held in Detroit.

Lola Clarke
Grapevine, Texas - Mrs. Lola Taylor Clarke, 88, of 1459 Hampton Road, formerly of 2727 Kivett Drive, Greensboro, N.C., died Jan. 9, 2000, in Baylor Medical Center.
She was born Aug. 22, 1911, in Surry County, a daughter of Walter Ambrose and Candice Cobbler Taylor, who preceded her in death. On Nov. 22, 1944, she married Haywood Dallas Clark, who also preceded her in death. She was a supervisor with W. Koury Co. and a member of Rocky Knoll Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Denmark Clarke, in 1966.
Surviving are a son, Taylor Clarke of Grapevine; two sisters, Mrs. Odell (Pearl) Phillips and Mrs. Walter (Ruby) Turner, both of Petersburg, Va.; two granddaughters, Mrs. Heather Clarke Brown of Keller and Melissa Brooke Clarke of Dallas; and one great-grandson, Alex Denmark Clarke of Keller.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. today in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery, High Point, N.C.
Cumby Family Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Sally Frank
Denton - Miss Sally Mae Frank, 87, of 252 W. Salisbury St. died Jan. 10, 2000, at Mountain Vista Health Park.
She was born May 12, 1912, in Davidson County, a daughter of Wiley Jefferson and Nancy Ellis Workman Frank. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church where she was a former choir member and worship committee chairman. She was a graduate of Denton High School and attended Woman’s College in Greensboro. She retired as administrative assistant with the U.S. Air Force in Washington, D.C.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Central United Methodist Church by the Rev. Joe Collins. Burial will be in Denton Town Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 tonight at Briggs Funeral Home and other times at the residence on W. Salisbury Street.
Memorials may be directed to Central United Methodist Church Beautification Fund, P.O. Box 126, Denton, N.C. 27239.

Fred Garner
Denton - Fred Garner, 72, of Richfield, died Jan. 11, 2000.
Graveside service will be 3:30 p.m. Thursday in Mountain View Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 2-3 p.m. Thursday at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton.

I.E. Hunt
Lexington - I.E. “Bus” Hunt, 93, died Jan. 11, 2000.
Graveside service will be 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Lexington City Cemetery.

Lola Jester
High Point - Mrs. Lola Anita Cranford Jester, 91, of Graybrier Nursing Home died Jan. 11, 2000, at Graybrier Nursing Home.
She was born Feb. 19, 1908, in Randleman, a daughter of Arch A. and Annie Lee Hill Cranford. She was a resident of High Point since 1925. She was a homemaker and a member of Hayworth Wesleyan Church. She was a member of the Lydia Tucker Sunday School Class. On May 23, 1925, she married Asa A. Jester, who preceded her in death March 29, 1984.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Harry (Mildred) Mitchell of 500 Ferndale Blvd.; a son, Charles Jester of 1605 Merrimon Place; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Hayworth Wesleyan Church by the Rev. David M. Emery. Burial will be in Hickory Chapel Wesleyan Church Cemetery. The body will be at Sechrest Funeral Home, High Point, until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Hephzibah Children’s Home, 6601 Zebulan Road, Macon, Ga. 31220.

Annie Johnson
High Point - Mrs. Annie Rebecca Therrell Johnson, 60, of E. Lexington Ave. died Jan. 11, 2000, at her residence.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Sechrest Funeral Service, High Point.

Ruth Leonard
Thomasville - Mrs. Ruth Westmoreland Tysinger Leonard, 78, of 6872 Old Greensboro Road, died at 1:40 p.m. Dec. 11, 2000, in Britthaven of Davidson Nursing Home.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home.

Louise Patterson
Lexington - Mrs. Louise Harris Patterson of Centerclair Inc. died at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 11, 2000.
Funeral will be 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Family Funeral Care Chapel, Thomasville. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Randleman - Della Stilley Pierce, 64, died Jan. 11, 2000, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.
