Albemarle - Luther Samuel Barbee of 1913 Mountain Creek Road died 5:57 a.m. March 1, 2000, at Stanly Memorial Hospital.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Hartsell Funeral Home Lefler Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Esther Bennett
Thomasville - Mrs. Esther Hohn Bennett, 85, formerly of 903 Arthur Ave. died March 1, 2000, at Britthaven of Davidson Nursing Center following several years of declining health.
She was born March 4, 1914, in Randolph County, a daughter of Edward and Ruth Hill Hohn. She was a resident of High Point most of her life. She retired from Amos Hosiery Co. and was a charter member of Cornerstone Baptist Church and the Faithful Workers Sunday School Class. She was married to Carey Bennett, who preceded her in death in 1967. She also was preceded in death by a son, Ralph Bennett; a daughter, Ruth Gore; and two sisters, Beulah Hohn Tuttle and Rosalie Hohn Rogers.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Genevieve Williard of 6904 Tulane Drive, High Point, and Mrs. Jean Peele of Weant Road, Archdale; a son, Fred Thomas “Tommy” Bennett of 3153 Tuttle Road, Archdale; three halfsisters, Mrs. Robert (Mary) Morton of 1605 Fairfield Road, High Point, Mrs. Doris Jones of Archdale and Mrs. Herbert (Dorothy) Browning of Morganton; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Cornerstone Baptist Church by Dr. Rodney E. Otwell. Burial will be in Fairfield United Methodist Church Cemetery. The body will be at Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale, until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence of Genevieve Williard.
Memorials may be directed to Cornerstone Baptist Church, 1110 N.C. 62 W., High Point, N.C. 27263.

Ronald Bryant
High Point - Ronald “Ronnie” Edward Bryant, 51, of 3303 Woodview Drive died Feb. 29, 2000, at Community General Hospital in Thomasville.
He was born Jan. 3, 1949, in Guilford County, a son of Robert Edward and Maxine Ledwell Bryant. He lived most of his life in High Point. He was a U.S. Army veteran and had been employed with the city of High Point Water Department. He was married to Michelle Ervin Bryant, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are two daughters, Christy Beach of Thomasville and Amanda Tate of Sophia; a step-daughter, Monica Douros of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; three granddaughters; and a brother, Joey Bryant of Florida.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Cumby Family Funeral Home, High Point, by the Rev. Travis McCraw Sr. Visitation will be after the service Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Drive, High Point, N.C. 27262.

Mary Cashatt
Archdale - Mrs. Mary Helen Robbins Cashatt, 85, of 9014 Harlow Road died Feb. 28, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born May 22, 1914, in Randolph County, a daughter of Nathan Finley and Retta Ingram Robbins. In 1964, she retired from High Point Paper Box Co. She was a member of Christ Community Church and the Ladies Bible Class. On April 24, 1933, she married Marvin Willie Cashatt, who preceded her in death May 1995.
Surviving are a son, the Rev. Marvin Howard Cashatt and his wife, Joye, of Prattville, Ala; four grandchildren, Marvin Harold Cashatt, Mark Howard Cashatt, Laura J. Cashatt and Mary E. “Beth” Cashatt Wright; and four great-grandchildren, James Lane Cashatt, Kourtni Elizabeth Wright, Nathan Finley Wright and Kerry Joynice Wright.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Ebenezer United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jeffrey P. Palmer and the Rev. Ken Day. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Sechrest Funeral Service, Archdale.
Memorials may be directed to Christ Community Church, P.O. Box 5487, High Point, N.C. 27262.

Betty Dawkins
Monroe - Mrs. Betty Ann Tysinger Dawkins, 65, died Feb. 29, 2000, at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte.
She was born July 11, 1934, in Davidson County, a daughter of Laddie Raymond and Sue Lucille Shaw Tysinger, who preceded her in death. She was a North Carolina public school teacher with Monroe Union County public school system. She was a graduate of High Point College and active in the civic work of Monroe and Union County, especially in the Union County Community Arts Council and Central United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Koy Ellis Dawkins of Monroe; a daughter, Susann Dawkins-Osborn and her husband, Scott, of Charlotte; a son, Koy Ellis Dawkins Jr. and his wife, Lara Koplin Dawkins, of Richmond, Va.; and a brother, Larry Raymond Tysinger of Greensboro.
Memorial service to celebrate her life will be 10 a.m. Friday at Central United Methodist Church by the Rev. J. Matthew Burton Jr., the Rev. Stephen W. Pillsbury and Dr. Donald W. Haynes. Entombment will be in the church columbarium.
Memorials may be directed to Central United Methodist Church, 801 S. Hayne St., Monroe, N.C. 28112, Hospice of Union County, 700 W. Roosevelt Blvd., Monroe, N.C. 28110 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

James Marion
Thomasville - The Rev. James “Jim” Samuel Marion, 73, of 1325 Cedar Drive died Feb. 29, 2000, at Thomasville Community General Hospital.
He was born March 3, 1927, in Surry County, a son of Squire and Minnie Patterson Marion. He was a resident of Thomasville for the past 30 years. He graduated from Mt. Airy High School and was a graduate of Guilford College and a graduate of Southeastern Seminary School, Wake Forest. He was a retired school teacher with Thomasville City Schools and was a shop teacher for Thomasville Middle School.
He was the former pastor of Oak Hill Friends Church, High Point and the Statesville Friends Meeting, Statesville. He was currently serving as the pastor of Science Hill Friends Meeting Church, Asheboro. He was one of the most loving, kindest and gentle husband, father and Paw-Paw, God has ever put on this Earth. One of his pastimes was having a beautiful and bountiful garden which he shared with family and friends. On Nov. 22, 1970, he married Eloise Briggs, who survives of the residence. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Carolyn Milks.
Also surviving are two sons, Joseph James Marion and his wife, Pam, of Thomasville and Samuel Ernest Marion of Durham; a step-son, Edward Ball and his wife, Carol, of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Mrs. Sue Hicks of Ararat and Mrs. Faye Reynolds of Siloam; five grandchildren, Abby Marion, Buddy Milks, Christopher Milks, Erin Ball and Adrienne Stowe; and a great-granddaughter, Caroline Stowe.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Science Hill Friends Meeting Church, Asheboro, by the Rev. Billy Britt, the Rev. Archie Creed and the Rev. Reece Wall. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Friday at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home and other times at the residence. The body will be at the funeral home until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
Memorials may be directed to Science Hill Friends Meeting Church, Building Fund, 2421 Lassiter Hill Road, Asheboro, N.C. 27203.

Jesse Marr Sr.
Thomasville - Jesse Bascom “J.B.” Marr Sr., 78, of 311 Long St. died Feb. 29, 2000, at his residence.
He was born Dec. 15, 1921, in Cumberland County, a son of Jesse O’Neal and Roella Rollins Marr, who preceded him in death. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II with the 308th Field Artillery in Central Europe. He retired as supervisor with Erwin-Lambeth Inc. of Thomasville. He was a member of the Pilot Lions Club, Thomasville Senior Citizens, Woodmen of the World and was a volunteer with Thomasville Primary School. He was a member of West End United Methodist Church, the Carlos Hill Memorial Sunday School Class and the Sonshine Senior Citizens of the church. On Sept. 8, 1942, he married Margaret McCrary, who survives of the residence. He also was preceded in death by three brothers, Vernon Marr, Wilfred Marr and Donald Marr.
Also surviving are two daughters, Ms. Judy Catherine Marr Blocher of Chapel Hill and Mrs. Harold (Janie Frances Marr) Byerly of Thomasville; a son, J.B. Marr Jr. of Chapel Hill; two brothers, Raymond L. Marr of Chapin, S.C. and Nathan Marr of Hampton, S.C.; four grandchildren, Marc Byerly, Hope Byerly, Joseph Blocher and David Blocher; and several nieces, nephews and special friends.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at West End United Methodist Church by the Rev. Gregory B. Gordon, the Rev. George Sherrill and Ivan D. Crissman Jr. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. The body will be at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home until the hour of service. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence.
Members of the Carlos Hill Sunday School Class of the church and members of the Pilot Lions Cub are asked to serve as Honorary Pallbearers and are asked to meet at the church by 1:30 p.m.
Memorials may be directed to the Memorial Fund of West End United Methodist Church, 600 Lexington Ave., Thomasville, N.C. 27360.

James Orr Sr.
Trinity - James Dalton Orr Sr., 86, of 5272 Old Meadowbrook Road died March 1, 2000, at his residence. He had been in declining health since October.
He was born July 8, 1913, in Forsyth County, a son of George and Jessie Williamson Orr. He was a resident of Trinity for the past 55 years and retired as owner/operator of Trinity Hosiery Co. He was a member of Trinity Memorial United Methodist Church and the Friendly Bible Sunday School Class. He was a Mason and a member of the Numa F. Reid Masonic Lodge #344 A.F. and A.M. On Dec. 27, 1932, he married the former Effie Osborne, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. R.W. (Judith) Phipps of Winston-Salem and Mrs. Terry (Sara) Pickett of 2454 Coltrane Mill Road, Archdale; three sons, James Dalton “Jimmy” Orr and his wife, Ruth, of 515 Eden Terrace, Archdale, Kenneth P. “Ken” Orr and his wife, Linda, of 5037 Meyers St., Archdale and Jerry Wayne Orr of Winston-Salem; foster son, Thomas W. “Tommy” Orr of 818 W. Fairfield Road, High Point; five grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. Janice Combs. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. The body will be at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and other times at the residence.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Jay Shaw
Lexington - Jay Perrington Shaw, 74, of Copley Street died Feb. 29, 2000, at 1:26 p.m. at Lexington memorial Hospital after declining health of several years.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday in Forest Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8 tonight at Davidson Funeral Home.

Vallie Smith
Trinity - Mrs. Vallie Lawson Smith, 92, of 7008 Welborn Road died March 1, 2000, in High Point Regional Hospital.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home, Thomasville.

Charles Thompson
Lexington - Charles Joseph “Charlie” Thompson, 22, of 446 Bowers Road died Feb. 28, 2000, at Lexington Memorial Hospital.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church. Visitation will be 6-10 tonight at Piedmont Funeral Home with a Christian wake service at 9:30 p.m.

Marie Whitlow
High Point - Mrs. Marie Leonard Whitlow, 87, died 9:40 a.m. March 1, 2000, at Lexington Memorial Hospital.
She was born June 27, 1912, in Guilford County, a daughter of John and Isbelle Walters Leonard.
Surviving are a son, Roger Darrell Whitlow and his wife, Joan R., of Trinity; a sister, Mrs. Mae Tucker of High Point.
Graveside service will be 2:30 p.m. Friday in Floral Garden Park Cemetery by the Rev. Fred Miller. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Family Funeral Care in Thomasville.

Joseph Garris Jr.
Joseph Warren Garris Jr., 78, of 510 Radford St. died Feb. 29, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Jan. 4, 1922, a son of Joseph Nelson Garris Sr. and Gertrude McFadden, who preceded him in death. He retired as watchman for Drexel-Heritage Furnishing Inc. He was educated at Atkins High School and was a member of Kimberly Park Holiness Church, Winston-Salem. He was a singer with the Morris Hill Singer and Emanuel Harmonizers. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II. He also was preceded in death by a son, Vernon Dale Garris.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia Reid Garris; three daughters, Mrs. Cynthia Ratliff, Ms. Revonda Garris and Mrs. Valencia (Bobby) Lindsay; two brothers, Samuel Garris and Edlee Garris; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Compton, Mrs. Rosalee (Alfred) Johnson, Mrs. Josephine (Albert) Samuel and Mrs. Essie M. Williams; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Williams Memorial CME Church by the Rev. Robert Williams. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be 2-3 p.m. Saturday at the church and other times at 1504 Delk Drive.
