MYRTLE RIDDLE
SANFORD - Myrtle Willis Riddle, 87, of Sanford, died Monday (10/6/03) at Central Carolina Hospital.
A native of Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Lina Bridges Riddle and Charles H. Riddle Sr. She was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church and did some volunteer work there as well as volunteering at Central Carolina Hospital. For many years she worked at R.D. Bracken Co. and later worked as the executive secretary at the UNC School of Dentistry, working under three deans.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today at First Baptist Church by the Rev. Eric Porterfield. Burial will follow in the Cool Springs Baptist Church cemetery.
She is survived by a brother, Charles H. Riddle Jr. and wife Ann of Kensington, Md.; sisters, Margaret Inez Riddle, Mildred R. Cameron, and Juanita R. Sluss and husband Olen, all of Sanford; a niece and three nephews.

MARJORIE THOMAS
CARTHAGE - Marjorie B. Thomas, 89, of 1508 U.S. 15-501, died Monday (10/6/03) at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.
A native of Moore County, she was a daughter of the late Charles Cameron Baxley and the late Addie Elizabeth Phillips. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, D.L. Thomas.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Center United Methodist Church by the Rev. Richard Farmer, the Rev. Bill Williams and the Rev. Jimmy Caviness. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
She is survived by a daughter, Rebecca Thomas at home and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the fellowship hall of Center United Methodist Church.

CARTHAGE - Vinnie Smith, 68, died Saturday (10/4/03), at home.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Zion AME Zion Church on Bryant Road by the Rev. Leo McKoy. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, Benjamin Smith; a daughter, Von Gilchrist of Carthage; sons, Kenneth, Raymond and Charles Smith, all of Carthage, and Lawrence Smith of Philadelphia, Pa.; a sister, Helen Swan Peters of Raeford; brothers, Roger Lee Swan of Vancouver, B.C., and Steve Swan of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
There will be a viewing from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Pugh & Smith Funeral Home.

PITTSBORO - Funeral services for Rosetta Thomas Hanks, 84, of Pittsboro, who died Wednesday (10/1/03), were at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mt. View AME Zion Church, Moncure, by the Rev. Maxine Mangum. Burial followed in Seymour Cemetery.
Scripture readings were made by the Rev. Jace Cox. Prayer of comfort was given by the Rev. Sylvester Lambert. Acknowledgements were by Margaret Pollard. Solo was by Pauline Eaves. Eulogy was by the Rev. Maxine Mangum.
Floral bearers were Judy Elliott, Lavern Cross, Sharlene Hawkins, Madeline Thomas, Rochelle Alston, and Leslie Green.
Pallbearers were James Hill, Clinton Nettles, Bobby Hawkins, Steve Thomas, Michael Knight and Moody Garris.

LUTHER BREWER
LILLINGTON - Luther D. Brewer, 83, of Lillington, died Sunday at Duke Medical Center in Durham.
Sgt. Brewer retired from the Army after 24 years of service.
After retirement, he started the Halifax Security at the Ammunition Supply Area at Fort Bragg, and was the lieutenant officer. In the early 1980s he became head of security at Fayetteville Technical Community College, then FTTC, and was also a special police lieutenant for Cumberland County. After retiring from this position he worked part-time as the assistant manager for American Flag Storage in Fayetteville.
Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Gospel Light Baptist Church in Spout Springs by the Rev. Grayson McNeill. Burial with military honors will be in the Sandhills State VA Cemetery in Spring Lake.
He is survived by his wife, Glenys F. Brewer; sons, Dean Brewer of Cameron and Allen Brewer of Fayetteville; daughters, Sherrell B. Raynor of Lillington and Ruth B. Leasure of Alabama; a sister, Dorothy Taylor of Southern Pines; 14 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

JEFFERY WOMACK
BROADWAY - Jeffery Scott Womack, 46, of 6185 Cool Springs Road, died Monday (10/6/03) at Central Carolina Hospital.
A native of Lee County, he was a son of Geneva Buchanan Womack Key and the late Wesley Brittan Womack.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Holly Springs Baptist Church by the Rev. Jerry Parsons. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
He is survived by his mother, Geneva Womack Key, at home; a daughter, Ashley Womack Moore of Cameron; and brothers, Tony and Edgar Womack, both of Broadway.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Smith Funeral Home and other times at the home of Tony and Teresa Womack, 6249 Cool Springs Road, Broadway.
JOEL DODSON
SANFORD - Joel Webb Dodson, 84, died Saturday (10/4/03) at Convalescent Care of Lee County.
A native of Stokes County, he was a son of John William Albert Dodson and Nannie Elizabeth Webb Dodson. He was preceded in death by as son, Ricky C. Dodson.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Colonial Funeral Home Chapel in Madison. Burial will be in the Dodson family cemetery in Sandy Ridge.
He is survived by daughters, Paige D. Davis and husband Robert of Sanford and Tammy D. Nichols and husband Brian of Okinawa, Japan; sons, J. Craig Dodson and wife Patti of Sanford, Ronald B. Dodson and wife Tyna of Winston-Salem and Joel H. Dodson of Daytona Beach, Fla.; a sister, Ruth Dodson Spencer of Lawsonville, 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

BEAR CREEK - John Coy Cheek, 76, of 800 Vander Oldham Road, died Saturday (10/4/03) at Chatham Hospital in Siler City.
A native of Chatham County, he was retired from Townsends Inc. He was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Hickory Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Darrell Garner. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Opal Henriott Cheek; sons, Charles L. Cheek of Bear Creek and John W. Cheek of Apex; a daughter, Patricia C. Austin of Bear Creek; stepsons, Frank Patrum of Snow Camp and Mike Patrum of Elon College; three grandchildren, a great-grandson and three stepgrandchildren.

MAMERS - Nancy Lee O'Quinn, 65, of Mamers, died Monday (10/6/03) at UNC Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lee and Annie O'Quinn.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Antioch Baptist Church by the Rev. Marti Groover. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
She is survived by a daughter, Jan Hadding and husband Keith of Mamers; a son, Robbin O'Quinn and wife Faye of Linden; a sister, Sylvia Cummings and husband Jerry of Mamers; three grandchildren and two nieces.

KESTER WOODY
SOUTHERN PINES - Kester W. Woody, 59, of Southern Pines, died Sunday (10/5/03) at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.
A native of Macon, Ga., he graduated from Lanier High School and from the University of Georgia School of Pharmacy in June 1976. He moved to Southern Pines in 1967. In 1982, he and Ron Ward opened the Southern Pines Prescription Shoppe, and recently they opened the Seven Lakes Prescription Shoppe.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Community Presbyterian Church in Pinehurst by the Rev. W.W. Olney and Dr. Ben Bishop. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly Hawthorne Woody; a daughter, Ashley Petty and husband Ike of Carthage; mother, Clara Jones Woody of Macon, Ga.; a brother, Oren Wilfred Woody II of Macon, Ga.; and two grandchildren.
