Charles Propst
HICKORY — Charles Carrell Propst, 49, of 3050 11th Ave. Drive S.E., formerly of Hoover Road in Lincolnton, died Jan. 14, 2003. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Catawba Funerals and Cremations. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Lincolnton. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
He was born in Lincolnton.
Survivors include five sisters, Nell P. Combs of Conover, Jane Bumgardner of Vale, Maxine Keever of Lincolnton, Mary Lou Cornette of Lincolnton, and Margaret Sue Harrison of Roswell, Ga.; and a brother, Ted Propst of Lincolnton.

Annie Luckey
DENVER — Annie Louise Cherry Luckey, 87, died Jan. 14, 2003. A funeral service was held at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Raymer Funeral Home Chapel. Interment was at 11 a.m. this morning at Lakeshore Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
She was born in Lincoln County.
Survivors include a son, James Barry Luckey of Denver; a daughter, Sandra L. Kestler of Denver; four sisters, Inez Morgan of Concord, Mildred Sherrill of Kannapolis, and Agnes Phillips and Carolyn Wallace, both of Denver; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 500 E. Morehead St., Mamaroneck Ave., White Plains, N.Y., 10605.

J.S. Wright
LAWNDALE — J.S. Wright, 84, of 444 E. Double Shoals Road, died Jan. 14, 2003. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Park.
Born in Cleveland County, he was the founder and former owner of Farm Supply Company of Shelby, Inc.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Williams Wright; a son, Buddy D. Wright of Lawndale; a daughter, Carolyn Arrowood of Lawndale; two brothers, Stough Wright of Grover and W.G. Wright of Ellenboro; five sisters, Elsie Hoyle, Izene Lail and Recca Grigg, all of Shelby, Mary Spain of Grover and Leah Fortenberry of Ellenboro; and one grandson, Barry Arrowood of Lawndale.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, N.C. 28150.

Charlie McClain
CHARLOTTE — Charlie Edward McClain, 63, of 1508 Greenview Place, died Jan. 14, 2003. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rock Hill United Methodist Church where he was a member. Burial will follow at Gold Hill-Rock Hill Cemetery.
Born in Lincoln County, he worked in the chemical lab at Union Carbide.
Survivors include five daughters, Myra M. Houston and Joyce A. McClain, both of Charlotte, Sybil M. Johnson of Lowesville, Melody Y. McClain of Columbia, S.C., and Shelia McClain of Mt. Holly; two sons, James B. McClain of Charlotte and Tony Byrd of Mt. Holly; a sister, Georgia M. Norman of Lowesville; five brothers, Jackie McClain of Maiden, Benjamin McClain, Cal McClain, Douglas McClain and Arthur Lee McClain, all of Lowesville; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Clemons Funeral Home in Newton is in charge of arrangements.

Joanne Mitchell
Joanne Word Mitchell, 43, of 909 E. Pine St., died Jan. 13, 2003. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Providence Missionary Baptist Church where she was a member. Burial will follow in Hollybrook Cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the church.
Born in Lincoln County, she was a receptionist at Piedmont Pioneer House.
Survivors include a daughter, Nakisha Michelle Nixon of the home; and her guardians Robert and Elizabeth Nixon of the home.

Earl Sellers
CHERRYVILLE — Earl Wesley Sellers, 90, of 1033 Sellerstown Road, died Jan. 14, 2003. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Shady Grove Baptist Church where he was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 p.m. tonight at Carpenter’s Funeral Home.
Born in Gaston County, he was a retired carpenter from Carlton Yarn Mills and formerly worked for Farmers Union Supply. He was a deacon at his church, former Chairman of the Deacons, Property Committee Chairman, Cemetery Committee Chairman, Church Clerk for 65 years, Trustee and Sunday School Superintendent.
Survivors include a son, Charles D. Sellers of Gastonia; two grandchildren, Rev. Lou Ann Sellers of Duisburg, Germany and Nancy Roberts of Columbia, S.C.; one great-grandchild; four brothers, Walter Sellers of Cherryville, Herbert Sellers of Lincolnton, J.L. Sellers and Chapman Sellers, both of Kings Mountain; and four sisters, Ruth Hoyle and Edna Craft, both of Cherryville, Marjorie Bess and Mary Frances Jackson, both of Kings Mountain.
Memorials may be made to Shady Grove Baptist Church, 3242 Tryon Courthouse Road, Cherryville, N.C. 28021.

Lewis Childers
CONOVER — Lewis D. “Lu” Childers, 54, of 2406 Lynell St., died Jan. 14, 2003. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Drum Funeral Home Chapel. Burial with military rites will follow at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery in Vale. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 tonight at Drum Funeral Home Chapel.
Born in Lincoln County, he was retired from Bell South in Newton and was the former partner/owner of J&L; One-Stop in Conover and was also a member of Riverside Moose Lodge. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Vietnam War, and had received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was a former member of Faith Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife, Juanita Shull Childers; two daughters, Toni Perryman of Wilmington and Wendy Vanover of Maiden; a son, Tony Brittain of Vale; and six grandchildren, Halie Brittain, Kalin Brittain, Tonie Brittain, Elizabeth Vanover, Dakota Perryman, and Sammy Perryman.

Carrie Hawn
HICKORY — Carrie Barger Hawn, 89, of Salisbury St., died Jan. 15, 2003. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Lukes Lutheran Church where she was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. prior to the service at the church.
Born in Catawba County, she was a homemaker.
Survivors include a son, Glenn Hawn of Conover; a daughter, Mary Broome of Hickory; five grandchildren, Rodney Broome, Kristi Hawn Biggar, Amy Broome Richards, Toni Hawn Tallent, and Carla Hawn Yoder; and six great-grandchildren.

CLAREMONT — Ann Hunt Connor, 84, of 3884 Hwy. 70 East, died Jan. 15, 2003. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Burke Mortuary Chapel in Newton. Burial will follow in Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery in Claremont. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Born in Cleveland County, she was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church and was the former owner/operator of Catawba Texaco.
Survivors include two sons, Wayne Connor and Mel Connor, both of Claremont; a brother, Carl Hunt of Drexel; two sisters, Austeen Alley of Tacoma, Wash. and Doris Pappas of Falls Church, Va.; three grandchildren, Lisa Miller, Shea Connor and Brittany Connor; and two step-grandchildren, Cindy Ballard and Anna Lyda.

Harold Leonhardt
VALE — James Harold Leonhardt, 60, of 8430 Macedonia Church Road, died Jan. 15, 2003. A graveside service was held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Bingham Memorial Evangelical Methodist Church in Lawndale where he was a member. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Born in Cleveland County, he was a router at Cegan Furniture Company of Hickory.
Survivors include two sons, Stephen Leonhardt of Vale and Jeffrey Leonhardt of Cherryville; a daughter, Becky Leonhardt of Lincolnton; a sister, Nancy Speagle of Vale; and two grandsons, Matthew Leonhardt and Dalton Leonhardt.
Stamey Funeral Home in Fallston is in charge of arrangements.

Ralph Schenck
Ralph Schenck, 78, died Jan. 18, 2003. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Washington Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the church.

Irma Ledwell
CHERRYVILLE — Irma Azilee Howell Ledwell, 84, of 111 Harrelson Road, died Jan. 19, 2003. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Cone Memorial Chapel of Carpenter’s Funeral Home. Burial will follow in City Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 tonight at Carpenter’s Funeral Home.
Born in Gaston County, she was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and was retired from Rhyne Houser Manufacturing Company.
Survivors include two sisters, Pene K. Howell and Roberta Yount, both of Cherryville.

Ruby Crouse
Ruby Huffman Crouse, 80, of 311-C South Cedar St., died Jan. 17, 2003. A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church. Burial followed in Maiden City Cemetery.
Born in Catawba County, she was retired from Belk Department Stores where she was a salesperson.
Survivors include a daughter, Becky C. Wilkinson of Cherryville; a brother, Lindy Huffman of Maiden; a grandson, Shea Wilkinson of Cherryville; and two great-grandsons.

CHARLOTTE — Dale Joseph Horne Sr., 64, died Jan. 16, 2003. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel in Lincolnton. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Charlotte.
Survivors include three sons, Dale J. Horne Jr. and Joey Horne, both of Charlotte, and Lee B. Horne of Iron Station; a daughter, Lisa Horne of Elizabethtown, Ky.; and seven grandchildren, Dale Horne III, Niki Horne, Melissa Horne, Lee Horne II, Victoria Horne, Nakita Horne, and Taija Horne.

Mary Arndt
MAIDEN — Mary Tuttle Arndt, 98, of the Abernathy Center in Newton, formerly of Maiden, died Jan. 17, 2003. A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Friendship United Methodist Church in Newton where she was a member. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Born in Pineola, she was a homemaker.
Survivors include a daughter, Nellie Barringer of Conover; a son, Ray Arndt of Shelby; a brother, William D. Tuttle of Maiden; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and four step great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Friendship United Methodist Church Family Life Center.
