MAIDEN - Luie Edward Goodson, 91, of 2294 Ivey Church Road, died May 7, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Ivey Memorial United Methodist Church where he was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 until 8 at E.F. Drum Funeral Home.
Born in Lincoln County, he worked as a saw miller and farmer.
Survivors include three daughters, Evelyn Fletcher of Lowesville, and Elizabeth Shrum, and Wilma Smith, both of Lincolnton; one sister, Ella Abernathy of Lincolnton; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Wilma Frazee
CROUSE - Wilma Joyce Frazee, 82, of 3614 Crouse School Road, formerly of Gastonia, died May 6, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Crouse United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
Born in Michigan, she was a telephone operator for Michigan Bell.
Survivors include two daughters, Sue Beatenhead of Crouse, and Cheryl Peterson of Whitewater, Wis.; one sister, Janet Campbell of Howell, Mich.; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

CHERRYVILLE - Betty “Bootie” Jean Van Dyke Hudson, 72, of 307 South Mulberry Street, died May 5, 2002. A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. today in City Memorial Cemetery.
Born in Gaston County, she was a member of First United Methodist Church and worked with PPG in Shelby for 30 years until retirement.
Survivors include one daughter, Cindy Hudson of Cherryville; three sons, Jerry Hudson, Hugh Hudson, and Rick Hudson, all of Cherryville; two sisters, Mary Sue Costner of Bessemer City, and Lillie Mae Leatherman of Cherryville; six grandchildren, Lance Hudson, Chance Hudson, Ryan Hudson, Wesley Hudson, Brooke Hudson, and Holly Hudson; and six great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Gaston County, P.O. Box 3984, Gastonia, N.C. 28053.

John Helgestad Jr.
CHERRYVILLE - John Helgestad Jr., 40, of 905 Requa Road, died May 6, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday in the Cone Memorial Chapel of Carpenter’s Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home beginning two hours prior to the service.
He was born in Madison, Wis.
Survivors include his wife, Cheryl Coleman Helgestad; one daughter, Coley Jade Helgestad of the home; two step daughters, Jennifer Gilbert Bridges of Cherryville, and Stephanie Gilbert of Chapel Hill; his father, Alfred John Helgestad Sr. of Madison, Wis.; one brother, Jason Helgestad of Lincolnton; four sisters, Barbara Shafer, and Tammy Helgestad, both of Madison, Wis., Shirley Long of Houston, Texas, and Becky Gibson of Birmingham, Ala.; and two grandchildren.

DENVER - Margaret Stapp Edwards, 92, of Blades Trail, died May 5, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday in the chapel at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home in Mooresville. Burial will take place in Highland Memorial Park in Pottstown, Pa. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
Born in Millersburg, Pa., she was a homemaker, a member of Zion’s United Church of Christ and the Order of the Eastern Star for over 55 years.
Survivors include a daughter, Sally E. Herr of Denver; four grandchildren, William E. Herr, Peri L. Moretz, Christopher S. Herr, and Patrick M. Herr; and five great-grandchildren.

Born in Lincoln County, she was former secretary of East Lincoln Middle School.
Survivors include her husband, Ken Cash; one son, Mark Cash of Lincolnton; three daughters, Beth Sipe, Lou Beal, and Lynn Gilbert, all of Lincolnton; her mother, Beulah Thornburg Abernethy of Lincolnton; and eight grandchildren.

KINGS MOUNTAIN - Norman Curtis McGinnis, 45, of 103 Fairdale St., died May 9, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Mountain Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 8 at the funeral home.
Born in Cleveland County, he worked as a house carpenter, and was a member of Sparrow Springs Baptist Church in Gastonia.
Survivors include two sons, Jesse McGinnis and John McGinnis, both of Grover; one daughter, Billie McGinnis of Shelby; two brothers, Willis A. McGinnis Jr. and Kenneth McGinnis, both of Kings Mountain; and two sisters, Connie Conner and Mary Donaldson, both of Kings Mountain.

Roger Kennedy
Roger Eugene Kennedy, 38, of 242 Central Lane, died May 8, 2002. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. today in Pisgah United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Warlick Funeral Home.
Born in Maryland, he was a self-employed web page designer in the Internet industry.
Survivors include his wife, Tina Finger Kennedy; one daughter, Sabrina Kennedy of Lincolnton; one brother, Ron Kennedy of Lincolnton; and his grandmother, Angelina Palladino of Lincolnton.

Josephine Lynch
Josephine Metts Lynch, 69, of 309 Lee St., died today, May 10, 2002.
Survivors include five sons, Oswald Lynch, Rufus Lynch, Christopher Lynch, and Vaughn Lynch, all of Lincolnton, and Brooks Lynch of Seattle, Wash.; and two daughters, Tracy Lynch Ray and Portia Lynch Williams, both of Lincolnton.
Arrangements are incomplete at Warlick Funeral Home.

Rosa Rhyne
Rosa Lee Scronce Rhyne, 80, of the Heath House, died May 10, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. today at Crowell Memorial United Methodist Church where she was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
She worked as a panel and button maker in the furniture industry until retirement.
Survivors include one daughter, Ailene Jarrett of Conover; two sons, Colon Rhyne of Columbus, Miss., and Bill Rhyne of Lincolnton; a brother, John Scronce Jr. of Maiden; two sisters, Mattie Smith of Charlotte, and Eva Stroud of Lincolnton; two grandchildren, Greg Jarrett, and Angie Deal; and five great-grandchildren.

Born in Gaston County, she was a homemaker.
Survivors include two daughters, Billie Theys, and Suzanne Goins, both of Cherryville; one sister, Helen Q. Beam of Cherryville; two brothers, Hoover Quinn, and Tom Quinn, both of Cherryville; and two grandchildren, Lenny Goins, and Kelly Goins.

Born in Lincoln County, he was a retired furniture worker.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Porter Beam; two sons, Larry Blackburn of Lincolnton, and Mike Blackburn of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two daughters, Brenda Smith of Crouse, and Norma Whitlock of Lincolnton; three brothers, Earl Beam of Morganton, Wayne Beam of Cherryville, and Coy Beam of Rutherford; three sisters, Helen Warlick of Rutherford, Katherine Leatherman, and Polly Leadwell, both of Cherryville; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Sudie Parker Kale, 90, of 449 Southside Church Road, died May 11, 2002. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. today at Southside Baptist Church where she was a member. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
She worked in the textile industry until retirement.
Survivors include one son, Jack Kale of Lincolnton; three daughters, Norma Keever, Martha Mullen, and Faye Ray, all of Lincolnton; ten grandchildren, LaDonna Michael, Brenda Rash, Glenda Sherlin, Clayton Mullen, Randel Kale, Jack Kale Jr., Susie Mull, Ricky Ray, J.C. Ray, and Chris Ray; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Born in Lincoln County, he worked as a band saw operator for Ethan Allen Furniture Company in Maiden.
Survivors include two daughters, Lesia Whitener, and Wendy Hester, both of Lincolnton; a brother, Jerry White of Lincolnton; and six grandchildren.

Burial will follow in Machpelah Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at the funeral home.
Born in Lincoln County, he was the tax collector and supervisor of the Lincoln County Tax office for thirty years until retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Sue Abernethy; three sons, Bud Abernethy, and Jeff Abernethy, both of Iron Station, and Dan Abernethy of Denver; two step daughters, Brenda Richard of Lincolnton, and Vivian Flowers of Charlotte; one sister, Kathryn Moore of Lincolnton; two grandchildren, Jason Abernethy, Brandi Abernethy Morgan; three step-grandchildren, Jeannie Ewing, Ginger Ewing, and Ava Flowers; and one step-great-grandchild.

Born in Guilford County, he was a U.S. Army Korean Conflict veteran and a retired minister with Los Angeles Four Square International Church Organization for 54 years. He served 25 years at Cherryville Foursquare Church.
Survivors include his wife, Florence Sells; two sons, Timothy Sells of Chester, S.C., and Joel Sells of Richburg, S.C.; one daughter, Kathy Shull of Cherryville; one brother, Charles L. Sells of High Point; three sisters, Sudie Warren, Peggy Marion, and Elaine Clinard, all of High Point; and two grandchildren, Jessica Sells, and Katie Sells.

Berneice Elliott
CHERRYVILLE - Berneice “Bea” Eaker Elliott, 84, of 3964 Baxter Implement Road, formerly of Charlotte, died May 10, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Bethlehem United Methodist Church where she was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Born in Lincoln County, she worked as a secretary for at her husband’s dairy farm equipment business until retirement. She was the music teacher for the four-year old Sunday School class at her church, and the adult Sunday School Class. She was an active member of the Church Circle and a den mother for Den 1, Pack 4 at First United Methodist.
Survivors include her son, Charles E. Elliott of Charlotte; one sister, Mallie Williams of Cherryville; and three grandchildren, Sarah Elliott, Libby Elliott, and Chuck Elliott.

Born in Hendersonville, he was a U.S. Army WWII veteran, and a member of Covenant Bible Church in Lincolnton. He worked as a sales representative for Sherrill Industries until retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Corrie Juanita Merrill Hayes; two sons, Don M. Hayes of Dalton, Ga., and John M. Hayes of Denver; two sisters, Vivian Setzer, and Marie Yelton, both of Spindale; and five grandchildren, Jason Hayes, Merrill Hayes, Scott Hayes, Zack Hayes, and Kristin Hayes.
