CHERRYVILLE - Eula Merlene “Merle” Shull, 80, of 708 East Drive, died July 31, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today at First Foursquare Gospel Church where she was a member. Burial will follow in City Memorial Cemetery. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service.
Born in Lincoln County, she was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Floyd “Pete” Shull; three sons, Bayne Shull of Cherryville, Wayne Matthews of South Carolina, and Carol Roberts of Clayo, Ga.; two daughters, Linda Shull of Cherryville and Dorlene Robinson of Fairmount, Ga.; two brothers, Esper Engle of Iron Station and Ralph Engle of Maiden; two sisters, Prue Gantt and Onie Gantt, both of Vale; 16 grandchildren including Crystal Shull and Felicia Shull; 25 great-grandchildren; and eight great great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to First Foursquare Gospel Church, P.O. Box 1003, Cherryville, N.C. 28021; or the American Cancer Society, 500 E. Morehead St., Suite 211, Charlotte, N.C. 28202.

Thurman Cline
CROUSE - Thurman Lee Cline, 87, of 419 Hephzibah Church Road, died July 29, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in the chapel at Ebony & White’s Funeral Service. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 30 minutes prior to the service.
Born in Cleveland County, he was a U.S. Navy WWII veteran, and a past member of Hopewell Baptist Church. He worked as a brick mason and concrete finisher until retirement.
Survivors include a son, Rev. Lee T. Cline of Crouse; two step-daughters, Marveta Wilkenson of Orgran, N.J., and Dorothy Moore Thorpe of Durham; four grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and four great great-grandchildren.

Ruth Webster
MONROE - Ruth Avery Webster, 88, formerly of Bessemer City, died July 31, 2002. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. today in the Cone Memorial Chapel of Carpenter’s Funeral Home. Burial followed in Antioch Methodist Church Cemetery.
Born in Lincoln County, she worked as a bookkeeper for Matthew Belk of Gastonia for 40 years until retirement. She attended Cross Road Baptist Church in Monroe.
Survivors include her husband, George William “Bill” Webster; three daughters, Linda Adams and Belinda Tucker, both of Monroe, and Amy Fincher of Charlotte; and four grandchildren, Josh Adams, Luke Adams, Logan Fincher, and Becca Fincher.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Union County, 700 W. Rosevelt Blvd., Monroe, N.C. 28110.

Namon Hovis
Namon Eugene Hovis, 86, of 2241 Lake Street, died Aug. 1, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Hollybrook Cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends at the church from 10 until 10:45 a.m. prior to the service.
Born in Lincoln County, he was employed as a manager for Coble Dairy until retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Cleta Setzer Hovis; two sons, Ken Hovis and Darrell Hovis, both of Lincolnton; a daughter, Gail Calloway of Lincolnton; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Family Life Center, 201 Robin Rd., Lincolnton, N.C. 28092.

Fred Avery
CROUSE - Fred Ellis Avery, 86, of 3074 Dave Heafner Road, died July 31, 2002. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Bethel Methodist Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at Warlick Funeral Home.
Born in Lincoln County, he worked as a dairy and produce farmer until retirement.
Survivors include two daughters, Emma Houser and Shirley Scronce, both of Crouse; two brothers, Bill Avery and Lewis Avery, both of Crouse; two sisters, Ethel Elmore of Crouse and Ruby Thurman of Hickory; and three grandchildren, Allen Scronce, Mark Scronce, and Elizabeth Scronce.

Jack Dellinger
FANCY GAP, Va. - D. Jack Dellinger, 63, of 158 Mallard Ridge Trail, formerly of Country Club Road in Lincolnton, died Aug. 1, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel at Warlick Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Hollybrook Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at the funeral home.
Born in Lincoln County, he was a member of Fairview Presbyterian Church, served in the U.S. Army, was a mason, and worked for Carolina Freight and ABF Trucking until retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Leona Brackett Dellinger; one son, David Lee Dellinger of Lincolnton; three daughters, Teresa Kay Lawing and Lisa Gay Young, both of Lincolnton, and Teresa Edmonds of Locust; a brother, Julius “Bud” Dellinger of Lincolnton; a sister, Jeanette Wilson of Lincolnton; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Born in Lincoln County, she was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and a homemaker.
Survivors include two sons, Danny Crouse and Larry Crouse, both of Lincolnton; a daughter, Evelyn Ramsey of Lincolnton; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Harrison Shade
KINGSTOWN - Harrison Turandus Shade, 29, of 1818 Macedonia Church Road, died Aug. 1, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at White Oak Springs Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
He was born in Cleveland County.
Survivors include two sons, Orlandus Gamble of Kings Mountain, and Turandus Shade Jr. of Forest City; two daughters, Lashanda Jones of Forest City, and Talea Shade of Lattimore; his mother, Martha Shade of Kingstown; a brother, Brian Shade of Kingstown; and two sisters, Amanda Shade of Shelby, and Cynthia Eskridge of Kingstown.

Robert Gibson Sr.
CHERRYVILLE - Robert E. “Robo” Gibson Sr., 50, of 304 Black Street, died Aug. 2, 2002. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. today at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Shelby where he was a member. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Born in Lincoln County, he was a member of the Cherryville New Year Shooters and was employed by Carolina Mills, Lincolnton.
Survivors include two sons, Robert E. Gibson Jr., and J. Brian Gibson, both of Cherryville; a brother, Ralph Gibson of Waco; a sister, Dorothy G. Smith of Shelby; and five grandchildren, Brandon Gibson, Jonathan Gibson, Justin Gibson, Elizabeth Gibson, and Michelle Gibson.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 2622 New Prospect Church Rd., Shelby, N.C. 28150.

Katherine Bumgardner Carpenter, 90, of 1907 North Aspen Street, died Aug. 3, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel at Warlick Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Hollybrook Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1 until 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home.
She was born in Catawba County.
Survivors include a son, Kenneth A. Carpenter of Dunwoody, Ga.; a daughter, Mary Carpenter Ramseur of Lincolnton; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Jessie Edwards
VALE - Jessie Sherman Edwards, 78, of 2244 Seagletown Road, died Aug. 4, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Emanuel United Church of Christ. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
A U.S. Army WWII veteran, he was a retired Precision Machinery foreman.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth McGinnis Edwards; two sons, Jeff Edwards of Florida, nad Stefan Edwards of Kentucky; ten grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Born in Gaston County, she worked as a dietitian with the Gaston County School System until retirement.

Survivors include two sons, Cletus Eugene Hedrick, and Willard Monroe Hedrick, both of Claremont; two daughters, Nancy Hedrick Wilkie of Claremont, and Pearl Hedrick Caldwell of Maiden; a brother, Samuel Richard of Hickory; two sisters, Martha Richard Painter of Lincolnton and Nancy Richard Stewart of Hickory; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.
