MAIDEN - Ruth Grindstaff Hawn, 83, of the Brian Center East-Hickory and formerly of Maiden, died Aug. 4, 2002. A private Burial service will be held in Maiden City Cemetery.
Born in Mitchell County, she was a member of First Baptist Church and a homemaker.
Survivors include a sister, Pauline Yancey of Maiden; three grandchildren, Tim Hawn, Terri Brewington, and Kimberly Hartgrove; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Goodin-Drum Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Joseph Rome
MAIDEN - Joseph Clyde Rome, 83, of 305 Cherokee Trail, died Aug. 2, 2002. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Goodin-Drum Funeral Home. Burial followed in Maiden City Cemetery.
Born in Rutherford County, he was a U.S. Navy veteran, an American Legion Post member, and employed in the assembly department of Bassett Furniture of Newton.
Survivors include his wife, Lessie H. Rome; a son, Donald R. Rome of Maiden; five grandchildren, Kelly Rome, James Rome, Sean Rome, Michael Rome, and Lori McCray; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Cornerstone Church, Maiden, N.C. 28650.

Billy Drum
MAIDEN - Billy Conard Drum, 67, of the Abernethy Center, formerly of 808 Hatchett Road in Lincolnton, died Aug. 1, 2002. A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Ivey Memorial United Methodist Church where he was a member.
Born in Catawba County, he worked as a finisher with Superior Chair.
Survivors include his parents, Thomas and Ethel Drum of the home; and six sisters, Taltha Parker, Pansy Smith, Nancy Josey, Joyce Hannon, and Sharon Good, all of Maiden; and Judy Herron of Lincolnton.
Memorials may be made to the Abernethy Center, 102 Leonard Ave., Newton, N.C. 28658.

Annie Crouse
NEWTON - Annie Lee Crouse, 83, of 1696 West Highway 10, died Aug. 6, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Memorial Chapel at Burke Mortuary. Burial will follow in Mt. Ruhama Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
Born in Catawba County, she was a member of Mt. Ruhama Baptist Church, and a homemaker.
Survivors include a son, Kenneth Bandy Crouse of Newton; two sisters, Nannie Hendrick of Lincolnton and Mable Lynn of Hickory; a brother, Herbert Campbell of South Carolina; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Ethel Sigmon
DENVER - Ethel Mae Yount Sigmon, 90, of the Wexford House, formerly of Denver, died Aug. 6, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 at the church.
Born in Lincoln County, she was employed as a school teacher until retirement, teaching at Rock Springs Elementary School and Sherrills Ford Elementary School.
Survivors include three sons, Jerry Sigmon and Johnny Sigmon, both of Sherrills Ford, and Tony Sigmon of Denver; a daughter, Sharon Sherrill of Denver; two sisters, Pauline Sherrill and Virginia Wellborn, both of Lincolnton; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Catawba Valley, 3975 Robinson Rd., Newton, N.C. 28658; or Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, 4136 Mt. Pleasant Rd., Sherrills Ford, N.C. 28673.

VALE- Josef Andres Santos, infant son of Jose Andres and Rhonda Coffey Santos of 408 Howard Lingerfelt Road, died Aug. 4, 2002. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Hartwell Cemetery in Hartwell, W.Va.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, are his grandparents, Billy and Dianne Coffey of Vale, Ray and Mary Nelson of Cucumber, W.Va., and Crispin and Aurora Bravo Santos of Mexico City, Mexico.

Hattie Johnson
SHELBY - Hattie J. Boykins Toms Johnson, 70, of Century Care Nursing Home, formerly of 513 Suttle Street, died Aug. 3, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Macedonia Baptist Church in Kingstown. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
She was born in Rutherford County.

Leila Gilbert
CHERRYVILLE - Leila Propst Gilbert, 91, of 401 Hampton Drive, died Aug. 5, 2002. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. today in Hollywood Cemetery in Gastonia.
Born in Cleveland County, she was a member of First Baptist Church of Cherryville, and a homemaker.
Survivors include a daughter, Juanita Gilreath of Cherryville; three grandchildren, Sally Rickard, Robbie Gilreath, and Jerry Beasley; five great-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.

FAIR PLAY, S.C. - Everette M. Foster, 86, formerly of Cherryville, died Aug. 5, 2002. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. today at First Baptist Church. Burial followed in City Memorial Cemetery.
Born in Gaston County, he worked as an accountant until retirement, and was a member of Central First Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda Macy of Fair Play; a sister, Zelia Carpenter of Bessemer City; two grandchildren, Maria Stevens and Yvonne Nix; and two great-grandchildren.

Born in Catawba County, she was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Edison Henry Crowe; two daughters, Oneda Marie Crowe Harrison of Concord and Theada Crowe Haynes of Winnsboro, S.C.; and three grandchildren.

HICKORY - Kathleen Nance Klutz, 79, of Brian Center Viewmont, died Aug. 5, 2002. No services are planned at this time.
Born in Lincoln County, she served with the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII, and was employed as a telephone operator.
Survivors include two sisters, Joyce Harrelson of Cherryville and Betty Putman of Lake Norman.

Louise Logan
VALE - Louise Sain Beam Logan, 84, of 5925 Bill Sain Road, died Aug. 6, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Warlick Funeral Home.
She was born in Lincoln County.
Survivors include her husband, Durham B. Logan of the home; two sons, Max L. Beam and Bobby G. Sain, both of Vale; a brother, Darrell Sain of Vale; a sister, Muriel S. Frye of Lincolnton; four grandchildren, Douglas M. Sain, Jeffrey A. Sain, Gary Lee Beam, and Matthew E. Beam; and five great-grandchildren.

Alvin Singletary
MAIDEN - Alvin Elwell Singletary, 43, of 126 Ramseur Road, died Aug. 7, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Living Word Pentecostal Holiness Church where he was a member. Burial will follow in Maiden Rosenwald Cemetery. The body will lie in state, and the family will receive friends, at the church one hour prior to the service.
Born in Bethesda, Md., he was a truck driver for Cargo Transport in Claremont.
Survivors include his wife, Mechelle Ramseur Singletary; a son, Justin Ramseur of Maiden; three daughters, Candace Ramseur, Kary Singletary, and Kelsey Singletary, all of Maiden; his father and step-mother, Rev. Walter and Margie Singletary of Hickory; a brother, Bert Singletary of Clarksville, Tenn.; two sisters, Carolyn Brinkley of Richmond, Va. and Ella Parker of Stony Point; his grandmother, Blanche Singletary of Fort St. Lucie, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state, and the family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
Born in Lincoln County, he was an electrician for Carl Grigg Electric of Shelby until retirement.
