Eryan Martha Gosnell, 23, died Jan. 5, 2001, at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, S.C., after a period of declining health. Born May 15, 1977, in Charleston, S.C., she was a daughter of Dr. Ben and Martha Goodman. A member of First Presbyterian Church, she was formerly confirmed at the Church of the Ascension in 1990. A 1995 graduate of Hickory High School, she had attended North Carolina State University. Survivors, in addition to her parents, include a sister, Caroline Goodman of Hickory; biological father, Wayne Gosnell; a stepmother, Martha; a stepsister, Sarah Gosnell of Charleston, S.C.; four grandparents, Nell Williams Hunter and Edith Collins Wingo of Charleston, S.C., and Dr. and Mrs. B.W. Robert “Junior” Powell, 54, of Fred Jolly Lane, Taylorsville, died Jan. 5, 2001, at Catawba Memorial Hospital. Born June 15, 1946, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Robert E. and Mary Watts Powell. A member of Oxford Baptist Church, he was employed by Hancock & Moore Furniture. He was preceded in death by a brother, Hubert Powell; and three sisters, Linda P. Moretz, Alice Fulbright and Nancy Wilkie. Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Robbie and Connie Powell of Hickory and Stacy Powell and his fiancee, Lynn Clark of Taylorsville; a daughter and son-in-law, Anita P. and Michael Swink of Taylorsville; a brother and sister-in-law, Ernest and Violet Powell of Hickory; the mother of his children, Brenda Powell of Bethlehem; two grandsons, Terrance Owens and Gavin Owens of Taylorsville; and two granddaughters, Anislee Owens of Taylorsville and Samantha Starnes of Hickory. LENOIR - Lonnie D. Bryant, 61, of Campground Road, Granite Falls, died Jan. 5, 2001, at McCain Hospital in Raeford. Born Nov. 16, 1939, in Caldwell County, he was a son of the late Ivey A. and Nancy Triplett Bryant. A Baptist, he was self-employed and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Survivors include his wife, Sadie Smith Bryant; a son, Lonnie Dale Bryant of Granite Falls; a stepson, Danny Greene of Granite Falls; two daughters, Tammy Brittian of Lenoir and Belinda Bryant of Granite Falls; a brother, Ervin A. Bryant of Lenoir; two sisters, Nova Jo Watts of Hudson and Betty Craig of Lenoir; and five grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted by the Revs. Wayne F. VALDESE - Pearl Reid Auton, 83, of Falls Avenue, Granite Falls, died Jan. 6, 2001, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory after a period of declining health. Born Aug. 21, 1917, in Caldwell County, she was a daughter of the late John P. and Callie Deliah Kirby Reid. A member of Grace Chapel United Methodist Church, she retired from Ellis Hosiery Mill Inc. and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Charles “Pete” Auton; a daughter, Lynda Carol Auton; four brothers, Walt Reid, Frank Reid, Wade Reid and Ralph Reid; and four sisters, Kate Yount, Mat Starnes, Bell Yount and Sue Winkler. Survivors include a brother, Joe Reid of Shaire Center in Lenoir; and a number of nephews, nieces and friends. TAYLORSVILLE - Edna Pennell James, 85, died Jan. 5, 2001, at Britthaven Nursing Home in Wilkesboro after a period of declining health. Born Sept. 2, 1915, in Alexander County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Rosa Coffee Pennell. A member of Three Forks Baptist Church, she retired from United Merchants in Statesville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer James; three brothers, Sam Pennell, Rob Pennell and Arthur Pennell; and two sisters, Emma Payne and Lula Farrell. Survivors include two brothers, Perry Pennell and Hershell Pennell of Taylorsville; and a number of nephews and nieces. The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. MORGANTON - Andrew John “Andy” Caparaso, 42, of Ridgewood Drive, died Jan. 4, 2001. Born Feb. 15, 1958, in New Haven, Conn., he was a son of Carmine V. and Frances Adamo Caparaso of Milford, Conn. A regional operations consultant of the North Carolina Subway Group, he attended St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. A football, baseball and basketball coach, he volunteered as the schedule coordinator of the Mull Elementary School basketball program and the peewee baseball program. He also served as a member of the Mull Athetic Board and the Mull PTO Board. Survivors, in addition to his parents, his wife, Patricia P. CONOVER - Sparford “Bubba” Blalock Lee, 65, of East Twentieth Street, Newton, died Jan. 6, 2001, at Catawba Memorial Hospital. Born Feb. 6, 1935, in Mecklenburg County, he was a son of the late Alver B. and Emma Lee Gordon Lee. A retired security guard for Bassett Furniture Co., he served in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Lee; a sister, Nannie Lou Dallas; and a granddaughter, Ruby Louise Inman. Born July 4, 1935, in Lincoln County, he was a son of the late Alexander and Mary Daniels Sanders Sr. A member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church, he retired from Homelite. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene Sanders and Willie Fred Lipscomb; and a sister, Hazel Sanders Armstrong. Survivors include his stepmother, Helen B. Sanders of Iron Station; three sons, Willie David Starr of Brooklyn, N.Y., Oscar Davis of Cornelius and Darrell Herndon of Lincolnton; three daughters, Vanessa Sanders Brown of Portsmouth, Va., Rose Marie Davis of Cornelius and Carol Herndon of Lincolnton; three brothers, John T. MAIDEN - Howard Kary Drum, 80, of Buffalo Shoals Road, Newton, died Jan. 6, 2001, at Catawba Memorial Hospital. Born Sept. 10, 1920, in Caldwell County, he was a son of the late Winfield and Roann Barker Drum. A member of Pisgah United Methodist Church, he was the former owner of Drums Radio & TV and Drums Grocery. He served in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by five brother; and two sisters. DALLAS, N.C. - Bandy Elmore Cline Sr., 68, of Ratchford Drive, died Jan. 5, 2001, at his residence. Born in Maiden, he was a son of the late Clifton and Elsie Campbell Cline. A member of Hardin Baptist Church, he retired from Southern Gear and was a U.S. Army Airborne veteran of the Korean War. He was preceded in death by a brother, Durwood Cline. William J. and Lola Cline McDaniel. He retired from Drexel Heritage Furniture in Hildebran and served in the military during World War II. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Sarah Louise Hamrick; three brothers, Glenn McDaniel, Charles McDaniel and Billy McDaniel; and a sister, Clara Lane. Born May 12, 1910, in Catawba County, she was a daughter of the late John and Laura Aquilla Hefner Smyre. A charter member of Woodlawn Baptist Church, she retired from Hutchins Hosiery Mill and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Ray Fisher; 10 brothers; and two sisters. Survivors include three sons, Norman R. Fisher of Conover, R.W. Fisher of Denver, N.C., and Harold E. GRANITE FALLS - Ruby Ellen Myers Poovey, 79, of Woodlane Street, died Jan. 6, 2001, at Camelot Manor. Born Sept. 12, 1921, in Caldwell County, she was a daughter of the late James B. and Cora Jane Richards Myers. A member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, where she taught the women No. 1 Sunday school class, she was a choir member and the church dedicated the Hanging of the Greens to her Dec. 3 for her services. She retired from the hosiery mill industry. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles R. Poovey; four brothers, Ray Myers, Dewey Myers, Perry Myers and Charles Myers; and three sisters, Beulah Mae Myers, Anni Lee Myers and Mary Sue Myers. Survivors include three brothers, the Rev. RUTHERFORDTON - Atha Lee Gardner Howell, 70, of Piney Knob Road, died Jan. 6, 2001, at Rutherford Hospital. Born Nov. 2, 1930, in Wayne County, she was a daughter of the late Herman and Vera Lancaster Gardner. A member of Gilkey Church of God in Rutherfordton, where she was past president of Lady's Ministry and active in other areas of the church for more than 52 years, she was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Thomas Howell. A member of Faith Baptist Church, he retired from Synthetics Finishing as a fabric finisher and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Modena Shuford Danner; and a sister, Bertha Helton Danner. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Buchanan; and a granddaughter, Sonya Garland. Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Carolyn and Carroll Garland of Taylorsville and Phyllis Buchanan of Bakersville; two brothers, Buster Sparks of Bakersville and Frank Sparks of Spruce Pine; two sisters, Edith Buchanan and Ruth Duncan of Bakersville; and a grandson, Steven and Marcia Garland of Taylorsville. The funeral was Sunday at Henline Hughes Funeral Home. Burial will be at 11 a.m. today in Old Cane Creek Cemetery.

ALLEN C. SHARPE
Allen C. Sharpe, 49, of Connelly Springs, died Jan. 6, 2001, at Frye Regional Medical Center. Born Jan. 11, 1951, he was a son of Novella Houston Sharpe of Connelly Springs and the late Clyde Cecil Sharpe. A graduate of Hickory High School, he attended Lees-McRae College for two years. He worked for Sharpe Motor Lines in Hildebran for 15 years. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Bickett and Bernice Sharpe; and his maternal grandparents, William G. and Inez Houston. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include a number of uncles, aunts and cousins. The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Rick Crouse at 2 p.m. today at Bass-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will be at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

MARSHALL H. GRIFFIN
Marshall Howard Griffin, 81, of Lee Cline Road, Conover, died Jan. 6, 2001, at Lenoir Health Center after a period of declining health. Born Feb. 15, 1919, in Lancaster County, S.C., he was a son of the late Leroy S. and Eva Collins Griffin. A member of Bethesda Baptist Church, he retired from National Linen Company as a salesman. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Ann Hoffman Griffin; three brothers; and a sister. Survivors include his wife, Anna Bradshaw Horne Griffin; two sons, Marshall H. Griffin and Robert Milton Griffin of Conover; a daughter, Janice Elaine Hollifield of Longview, Wash.; a brother, James R. Griffin of Fort Mill, S.C.; a brother-in-law, N. Hayes Hoffman of Charlotte; a sister-in-law, Lucille Parker Griffin of Charlotte; six grandchildren; and a great-grandson. The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Richard Browning at 3 p.m. Tuesday at his church. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will be at Hickory Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 tonight.
