NEWTON - Agnew Glaze, 79, of Second Street Place, SW, Conover, died Jan. 8, 2001, at Catawba Memorial Hospital. Born Nov. 9, 1921, in Albany, Ga., he was a son of the late Charlie and Pearlie Maddox Glaze. A member of McQueens Chapel United Methodist Church, he was involved in the United Methodist Men, the all male chorus and was a Lay Leader. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he retired from Electrical Products Industries. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Fannie Cline Glaze; two brothers; and a sister. Survivors include his second wife, Mildred H. Glaze; two stepsons, Michael Cornelius and Charles Cornelius of Claremont; two stepdaughters, Darlene Lortz of Catawba and Elizabeth Gibbs of Greensboro; a brother and four sisters-in-law, James and Marion Johnson Jr. of Colonia, N.J., Ruby Cline of Conover, Charlie Bell Gilbert of Catawba and Ruth Johnson of Petersburg, Va.; two sisters, Betteye Williams of Albany, Ga., and Janice Glaze of England; two aunts, Lillian Glaze and Amanda Diggs of Albany, Ga.; nine stepgrandchildren; nine stepgreat-grandchildren; and a number of other relatives and friends. MARY L. ALLISON
LINCOLNTON - Mary Lee Allison, 80, of South Pink Street, Cherryville, died Jan. 7, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born May 15, 1920, Lancaster, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Johnny and Mary McIlwaine Thompson. A member of Zion Hill Baptist Church, she served as an usher and missionary. The first vice president of the missionary, she was a member of the Queen Esther Chapter No. 1 Order of the Eastern Star and served as a Matron. She retired from Howell Mill. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Allison; two brothers, Napoleon Thompson and Johnny Thompson Jr.; and three sister, Lucy Gober, Roberta Coffey and Esther Graham. Survivors include seven nephews, Robert Gober of San Antonio, Texas, Joe Gober, Ernest Graham, Kenneth Graham and Athan Coffey of Dayton, Ohio, Maurice Graham of Los Angeles, Calif., and Jerry Thompson of Charlotte; four nieces, Earlene Reed and Doris Ligon of Dayton, Dianne Horry of Norfolk, Va., and Bonnie Thompson of Salisbury; a great-niece, Elizabeth T. NEWTON - Samuel “Grinny” Shuford, 56, of East Saunders Street, died Jan. 8, 2001, at Catawba Memorial Hospital. Born Nov. 15, 1944, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Fred Eugene Shuford and Alna Hunt. He was employed by Sigman Dairy. He was preceded in death by four brothers. Survivors include his wife, Joan Shuford; a son, Samual Shuford Jr. of Raleigh; two brothers, Leroy Shuford of Newton and Alaxander Shuford of Asheville; two sisters, Mary Reinhardt and Emma Ruth Sims of Newton; a stepdaughter, Linda Clark of Hickory; two grandchildren; a number of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends. CONOVER - Trilby Drum Warren, 72, of Second Street Place, NE, died Jan. 10, 2001, at the United Church Retirement Home, Abernethy Center in Newton. Born Sept. 17, 1928, in Catawba County, she was a daughter of the late Ivey B. and Ada Lillian Lee Drum. A member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Claremont, she retired as a supervisor from Homespun Hosiery. Survivors include her husband, Mack D. Warren; a son and daughter-in-law, Dexter D. and Gussy Warren of Newton; a daughter and son-in-law, Criss and Alex Ervin of Newton; three brothers, Hayes Edward Drum of Sherrills Ford, E.B. “Stump” Drum of Newton and Anthony Lee Drum of Mount Holly; a sister and brother-in-law, Glenna and Mal D. STONY POINT - The Rev. Johnny Walter Shatley, 65, of Powell Brickyard Road, Lenoir, died Jan. 9, 2001, at Camelot Manor Nursing Care in Granite Falls. Born May 31, 1935, in Caldwell County, he was a son of Mary Summerow Shatley of Lenoir and the late Joseph Emanuel Shatley. A member of Celia Creek Baptist Church, he retired as a furniture worker and minister. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter; a brother, Bruce Edward Shatley; and two sisters, Louise Mitze and Mary Frances Shatley. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Dorothy Marie Shatley; three sons, Douglas Walter Shatley, Don Allen Shatley and Joseph Elisha Shatley of Lenoir; five stepsons, Bruce Allen Thomas, William Ray Hood, John Marty Hood, Baxter Allen Hood and James Albert Hood of Lenoir; two daughters, Debbie Lynn Huskey of Sawmills and Lori Ann Branch of Kings Creek; two brothers, Charlie Ralph Shatley and Markus Wayne Shatley of Lenoir; two sisters, Magalene Thompson and Cora Mae Crump of Lenoir; 20 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. LENOIR - Raymond Lewis Carver, 69, of Ideal Drive, died Jan. 8, 2001, at Frye Regional Medical Center. Born April 24, 1931, in Macon County, he was a son of the late Oscar L. and Beulah Cabe Carver. Retired from Kincaid Furniture, he served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957. He was preceded in death by a brother, Willard Carver; and two sisters, Maudie Farmer and Edna Anderson. Survivors include his wife, Madeline Buckner Carver; a son, Don Lewis Carver of Lenoir; four brothers, Sam Carver of Jacksonville, Fla., George Carver and Jimmy Carver of Lenoir and David Carver of Granite Falls; four sisters, Ruby Bare of Wilkesboro, Freeda Edwards of Hudson, Lillie Collier of Valdese and Bessie Henry of Sylva; and a grandchild, Brandon Lewis Carver. NEWTON - Juanita Robey Smith, 73, of West Eighth Street, died Jan. 9, 2001, at Catawba Memorial Hospital. Born Feb. 26, 1927, in Crewe, Va., she was a daughter of the late Addie W. and Gordie Steele Robey. A member of First Baptist Church in Newton, she retired as a bookkeeper and worked for Hudson Furniture, Kay-Mar Furniture and Pem-Kay Furniture. A musician, she performed at the White Pine for a number of years. She was a former member of the Newton Needlers' Chapter of the American Needlepoint Guild. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Robert L. and Mary Smith of Newton; and two grandchildren, Robert Kelley Smith of Raleigh and Joseph Wesley Smith of Cary. TAYLORSVILLE - Robert Edmond “Bob” Dean, 71, formerly of Rockingham, died Jan. 8, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Born June 15, 1929, in Cumberland County, he was a son of the late William B. and Frances E. Hall Dean. A member of Mount Beulah Holiness Church in Rockingham, he retired as a builder for the Duke Power Company after 18 years. He was preceded in death by a brother, Curt Dean; and his stepmother, Cora Dean. Survivors include his wife of 29 years, Sue Crouch Dean; a son, Phillip Fox of Taylorsville; a brother, Luke Dean of Rockingham; a sister, Kathleen Griggs of Rockingham; a stepbrother, David Blount of Lexington; a stepsister, Sarah Ackers of Lexington; a granddaughter, Danielle Fox of Conover; and a number of nephews and nieces. Born July 3, 1924, in Gaffney, S.C., he was a son of the late Samuel and Hattie English Hillman Sr. A member of Hinton Memorial United Methodist Church, he served as a trustee and usher. He retired as a laborer. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Paul Hillman, Esau Hillman and Matthew Hillman; and two sisters, Corine Pounds and Hattie “Sister Pie” Barnes. A member of Mount Hebron Baptist Church, she was a member of the adult ladies Sunday school class and the WMU. A caretaker, she was a homemaker and worked with Hickory Manufacturing and Holly Farms in Hiddenite. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence P. Bentley; six brothers, Henry Lowe, Frank Lowe, Milas Lowe, Edison Lowe, Tilla Lowe and Howard Lowe; and a sister, Mattie Deal. Clarence Oran Cline, 89, of Newton, died Jan. 9, 2001, at Lincoln Nursing Center in Lincolnton. Born Nov. 2, 1911, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Otis B. and Jenny Settlymire Cline. A member of New Jerusalem Lutheran Church, he was the former greens superintendent at the Catawba Country Club. He was a U.S. Army Air Corp veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Shook Cline. Born July 28, 1925, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late John D. and Mary Jane Cline Fulbright. A member of East First Street Baptist Church, he worked at Broyhill Furniture for 47 years. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Setzer; and six brothers and sisters. Survivors include his wife, Mary C. STONY POINT - Ronald Edward “Ed” Reese, 67, of Gus Pennell Lane, Taylorsville, died Jan. 10, 2001, after a period of declining health. Born July 1, 1933, in Watauga County, he was a son of the late William W. and Nettie Taylor Reese. A member of Mt. Ridge Baptist Church, he retired from Clayton Marcus Furniture Co. He was preceded in death by a brother, Glenn Reese; and two sisters, Ruth Teague and Luane Dixon. Survivors include his wife, Irene Pennell Reese; a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald Lee and Jennifer Reese of Taylorsville; a daughter and her friend, Rita Benfield and Reggie Hawkins of Taylorsville; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Bob Reese of Hickory and Junior and Joyce Reese of Conover; and two grandchildren, Matthew Reese and Ashlyn Reese. The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. David Chapman at 2 p.m. Saturday at his church. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. GARLIN MABE
MORGANTON - Garlin “G.W.” Mabe, 85, of Playmore Beach Road, died Jan. 9, 2001, at Camelot Manor Nursing Home in Granite Falls. Born May 12, 1915, in Burke County, he was a son of the late King D. and Dora Ella Walker Mabe. A member of Conway's Chapel Baptist Church, he retired as a furniture worker and served during World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Pearl Clark Mabe; a brother, Henry Joseph Mabe; a sister, Ocie Maxine Mabe Austin; and a stepdaughter, Georgia Faye Helton. Survivors include two sons, William Paul Mabe and James David Mabe of Lenoir; a stepson, Joseph Ray Mabe of Chesapeake, Va.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Judy M. and Steve Robertson and Sandra M. and William Dula of Lenoir and Vickie M. and Nicholas McFarlane of West Fairlee, Vt.; a stepdaughter, Brenda Kay Franklin of Statesville; a sister and brother-in-law, Pearl M. and Greer Isaacs of Morganton; five grandchildren; and five stepgrandchildren. The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. John Mason at 2 p.m. Saturday at Kirksey Funeral Home. Burial will be in Conway's Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by Morganton Veterans Ceremonial Team. ENNIS P. ALLEN
LENOIR - Ennis Dell Pierce Allen, 79, of Cypress Street, Hudson, died Jan. 9, 2001, at Caldwell County Hospice. Born Jan. 16, 1921, in Wilkes County, she was a daughter of the late Jesse and Hattie Faw Pierce. A member of Pleasant Home Baptist Church in Wilkes County, she retired from Waldensian Bakery. She was preceded in death by a son, Daniel R. Allen; and three brothers, Clayton Pierce, Cecil Pierce and Glenn Pierce. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Judy K. and Robert Benfield of Hudson; three brothers, Marvin Pierce of Florida, Eugene Pierce of Wilbar and John Pierce of Trinity; a sister, Ollie Pierce Cantor of Wilkesboro; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. David Beane at 2 p.m. Thursday at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. WILLIAM K. GOODMAN
FALLSTON - William Keith Goodman, 62, of Borders Road, died Jan. 10, 2001, at his residence. Born March 31, 1938, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late William R. and Fannie Jane Swink Goodman. A member of Knob Creek United Methodist Church, he retired from Condrey's Heating & Air Conditioning. He was preceded in death by a son, Laray Goodman; and a brother, Benny Goodman. Survivors include a son, Ricky Goodman of Kings Mountain; a daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Tony Ruppe of Kings Mountain; two brothers, Larry Goodman of Belwood and Charlie Goodman of Casar; two sisters, Jean Street of Erwin, Tenn., and Helen Hoyle of Forest City; and three grandchildren and a granddaughter-in-law, Kevin and Sherri Green, Heather Ruppe and Dustin Ruppe. Lor Chang, 32, of Claremont, died Jan. 6, 2001, at Catawba Memorial Hospital. Born Feb. 4, 1968, in Laos, he was a son of the late Chai Vang Chang. Survivors include his wife, Ge Thor; two sons, Lee Xam Chang and Ying Cha Zong Chang of Claremont; and three daughters, Pakou Chang, May Chang and Nancy Chang of Claremont. JUANITA M. McCANLESS
Juanita Merritt McCanless, 80, of Wildlife Access Road, died Jan. 11, 2001, at McDowell Hospital in Marion. Born April 16, 1920, in Winston-Salem, she was a daughter of the late William R. and Eliza H. Merritt. A member of Bethel United Methodist Church in King, she retired from the Western Electric Company. She was preceded in death by her husband, T.R. “Raymond” McCanless. Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Ramona and Alvin Davis and Paula McCanless of Hickory; a brother, Paul Merritt of Rural Hall; two sisters, Dorothy Pierce of Indianapolis, Ind., and Nina Butner of Kernersville; three grandsons, Chris De Hart of Raleigh, Bill Davis of Hickory and Tim Davis of Bethlehem; two granddaughters, Elizabeth Yount and Christine Canipe of Hickory; and 10 great-grandchildren. LENOIR - Junior Wayne Greene, 47, of Zacks Fork Road, died Jan. 10, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Born June 30, 1953, in Wilkes County, he was a son of Leonard M. and Ila Minton Greene of Lenoir. A Baptist, he employed by Broyhill Lenoir Furniture Corporation. He was preceded in death by a brother, Leonard Carl Greene. Survivors, in addition to his parents, include a daughter, Amber Cherelle Greene of the home; four brothers, Ray Greene, Larry Greene and Ricky Greene of Lenoir and Randy Greene of Whitnel; and a sister, Geraldine Cline of Lenoir. He was an inspector at Cochrane Furniture Company. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eddie Sailors Propst. Survivors include two sons, Ted Propst of Lincolnton and Charles Propst of Newton; five daughters, Nell McCombs of Newton, Mary Cornette and Maxine Keever of Lincolnton, Margaret Harrison of Roswell, Ga., and Jane Bumgarner of Vale; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. HENRY G. LAWRENCE
FAIRFIELD, Calif. - Henry G. “Hank” Lawrence, 76, of Fairfield, died Jan. 4, 2001, at his residence. Born May 13, 1924, in Hickory, he was a Naval pilot from June 1942 until he retired in June 1967 as LCDR. He worked for Braniff Airlines from June 1967 to 1970 and was ground operations manager in Okinawa, Japan. He was employed at Dittmer Ranch for the last 30 years. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, Retired Officers Association and the Fairfield Presbyterian Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Josephine Cloer Lawrence. Survivors include his wife, Doris Lawrence; four daughters, Christine Bradshaw of Auburn, Carol Conner of Kona, Hawaii, Catherine Newman of Bodega and Cindy of Hilo, Hawaii; a sister, Louise of Hickory, N.C.; and five grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted by Pastor Stuart Drake at 1 p.m. today at his church. Burial will be in Fairmont Memorial Park with military honors. Hester Stilwell Wilson, 92, of Andrews Circle, Lenoir, formerly of Hildebran, died Jan. 11, 2001, at Avante of Charlotte after a period of declining health. Born May 8, 1908, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late Pinkney and Ann Weaver Stilwell. She was a member of Central Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ralph C. Beaver; and her second husband, the Rev. Paul Wilson. Survivors include a son, Raymond A. Beaver of Tempe, Ariz.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Walter Raffield of Charlotte and Azalee and Jack Bogle of Hudson; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted by the Revs. Harold Cantrell and Darrell Webb at 2 p.m. Saturday at her church. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will be in South Fork Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will be at Hickory Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 tonight.
