Everett “Dean” Jerome Sox, 100, of Hickory, died Jan. 11, 2001, at Lutheran Nursing Home. Born Aug. 31, 1900, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Enoch J. and Allie Roof Sox. A member of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, having served on the church council for a number of years, he retired from Lenoir-Rhyne College as dean of men. The oldest member of the Hickory Coffee Club, he was a former president of Hickory Lion's Club and Lenoir-Rhyne College Alumni Association. He taught in Hickory city schools and was a former principal of Oakwood and Viewmont schools. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Fulbright Sox. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Jane S. and W. Paul Monroe of Hickory; three grandchildren, Will Monroe, Charles C. Monroe and Thad Monroe; and four great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Richard Fritz at 3 p.m. Sunday at his church. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. MORGANTON - John Tipton Oxford Jr., 75, of Morganton, died Jan. 11, 2001, at his residence. Born Nov. 27, 1925, in Burke County, he was a son of the late John T. and Blonnie Propst Oxford Sr. A member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church of Morganton, he served in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Dorothy Oxford, Melba Golightly and Sue Newton. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Scott Oxford; two sons, John Tipton Oxford III of Morganton and the Rev. Scott Alexander Oxford of Asheville; a brother, Jim Oxford of Morganton; and two grandchildren, Will Oxford and Caroline Oxford. TAYLORSVILLE - Dora Dovey Walker St. Clair, 80, of Fourth Avenue, NW, died Jan. 11, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Born Feb. 28, 1920, in Alexander County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie and Sinia Walker. A member of Taylorsville Wesleyan Church, she was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph Walker and Vernon Walker. Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Ernest St. Clair; a son, Wayne St. Clair of Taylorsville; two daughters, Diane Griffin of Taylorsville and Joy Miller of Asheville; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Florence Roberts and Zora and Roby Mecimore of Taylorsville; a grandson; a granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren. Mary Alice Rowell Rice, 58, of Burke County Road, died Jan. 11, 2001, at her residence. Born March 18, 1942, in Catawba County, she was a daughter of the late Clyde Rowell and Gladys Teague Rowell Sipes. A member of New Covenant Church of God, she was employed by Jobst Hosiery. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Carter Rice; and a granddaughter, Courtney Hines. Survivors include three daughters, Pamela Ann Rice of the home, Beverly Rice Green of Rutherfordton and Julie Ellen Rice of Morganton; a sister, Christine Rowell Wilson of Granite Falls; a stepfather, Eugene F. Sipes of Hickory; three grandsons, Dusty Hines of Taylorsville, Corey Green of Rutherfordton and Cody Rice of Morganton; a granddaughter, Stephanie Marlowe of Rutherfordton; a nephew; and two nieces. FALLSTON - Hugh Willard Huffman, 81, of N.C. 10 West, Vale, died Jan. 11, 2001, at the Brian Center in Hickory. Born Oct. 8, 1919, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Charlie T. and Louella Dagenhardt Huffman. A member of Corinth Baptist Church in Vale, he retired from Anthony Hosiery as a fixer, worked at Tallent Trucking Company and was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Canipe Huffman; two brothers; and a sister. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Joy Huffman of Casar; two daughters and sons-in-law, Billie and Floyd Huffman of Hildebran and Barbara and Andy Cook of Vale; a brother, Ben Huffman of Vale; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Born June 1, 1904, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late Sandy and Della Hambright Hunter. A member of Rock Hill United Methodist Church in Lowesville, she was a domestic worker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cash Graham Sr.; and three sons, Ivery Hunter, Roscoe Graham and Johnny Ervin Graham. Born Feb. 20, 1947, in Burke County, he was a son of the late Jenk and Hester York Chapman. A member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, he was an employee of the city of Morganton. Born March 4, 1927, in Alexander County, he was a son of Emma Dagenhart Chapman of Taylorsville and the late David Earl “Ted” Chapman. A Baptist, he retired from Chapman6s Garage in Stony Point and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Born Sept. 13, 1913, in Alexander County, she was a daughter of the late Rufus F. and Cora Miller Waugh. A member of New Salem Presbyterian Church, she retired as a farmer and homemaker. Born June 12, 1934, in Cleveland County, he was a son of Bertha Gardner Clemons of Maiden and the late George Milton Clemons. A barber, he was self-employed at Clemons Barber Shop. He was preceded in death by a brother, Willie James Clemons. C. and Candis Alberta Jackson Clemons Sr. A member of the usher board and trustee board at his church, he retired from Checker Auto Parts. He was preceded in death by a brother, Herman Pounds; and a sister, Barbara Culp. V. ERVIN KILLIAN
CONOVER - V. Ervin Killian, 75, of Lee Cline Road, Conover, died Jan. 12, 2001, at Catawba Memorial Hospital. Born Aug. 25, 1925, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Vernon E. and Ninna D. Sigmon Killian. A lifelong member of St. Peters Lutheran Church, he was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Retired from Conover Chair, he was a designer, upholsterer and quality control supervisor. He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Rae Lail Killian; and a brother. Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Daniel G. Killian of Phoenix, Ariz., and Mark D. and Patricia H. Killian of Conover; a daughter and son-in-law, Daphne and H. Born Oct. 5, 1904, he was a son of the late Robert C. and Adeline Radar Baird. A lifelong member of Pleasant View Baptist Church, he was a life deacon. He was formerly the owner and operator of Valdese Food Shoppe. He retired as owner and operator of Baird's Cabinet Shop. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carrie Burns Baird; and a son, Rondall M. Baird. Survivors include three sons, Clyde H. Baird of Morganton, Lloyd R. Baird of Madison and Rex Baird of Wise, Va.; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Born May 13, 1934, in Caldwell County, he was son of Hazel Beshears Henson and the late Conley and Hazel Beshears Henson. He was owner and operator of Bud's Auto Service. He was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene Eller Henson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Logins G. Woodie; a son, Lloyd C. Woodie; and 13 brothers and sisters. FALLSTON - William McKinley “Ken” Jones, 66, of Willis Road, Vale, died Jan. 13, 2001, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory. Born Dec. 12, 1934, in Cleveland County, he was a a son of the late Frank and Jettie Caroline Bivens Jones. He retired from Century Furniture in Hickory after nearly 25 years of service. He was preceded in death by a stepgrandson. Survivors include his wife, his wife, Peggy Riley Jones; a son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Tammy Jones of Vale; two stepsons and stepdaughters-in-law, Donald and Renee Bridges of Hickory and Jerry and Sandy Bridges of East Palatka, Fla.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Carol A. and Jeff Lail and Michelle Poynter of Conover; two stepdaughters and a stepson-in-law, Nancy and Barry Jones of Maysville, Ky., and Julie Spurlin of Salisbury; two brothers, Eugene Jones of Cherryville and Larry Jones of Portland, Tenn.; five sisters, Nadine Harrison and Bertie Davis of Shelby and Ruby Martin, Lois Chapman and Mamie Lou Pruett of Casar; six grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Donald Caldwell at 2 p.m. Monday at Stamey Funeral Home. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Hickory. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 tonight.

CAROLYN S. CALDWELL
Carolyn Sigmon Caldwell, 59, of Weyland Drive, Conover, died Jan. 12, 2001, at Catawba Memorial Hospital. Born Nov. 17, 1941, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Curtis E. and Charlcie Bolick Sigmon. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church. She was preceded in death by a brother, Larry Sigmon; a sister, Betty Jean Hall; and a great-grandson, Devin Lofland. Survivors include her husband, Brandon C. Caldwell; two daughters, Kimberly Barnes of Catawba and Lisa Kiziah of Bethlehem; three brothers, Curtis Earl Sigmon Jr. of Taylorsville, Jerry Sigmon of Charlotte and Billy Sigmon of Winston-Salem; five grandsons, Brian Lofland, Scott Lofland and Cody Barnes of Catawba and Ethan Kiziah and Dylan Kiziah of Bethlehem; and a granddaughter, Tiffeny Stewert of Vale. The funeral will be conducted by Pastor Richard Schwandt at 2 p.m. Monday at her church. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. The family will be at Hickory Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 tonight.

JAMES A. LAWS
TAYLORSVILLE - James Alvie Laws, 80, of Avante of Wilkesboro, formerly of Moravian Falls, died Jan. 12, 2001, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health. He was born Sept. 25, 1920, in Wilkes County. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he attended Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Moravian Falls. A part-time carpenter, he was a former member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 33 in North Wilkesboro. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Carl Laws, Glenn Laws and June Laws. A graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. Jack Phillips at 4 p.m. today in Moravian Falls Cemetery. Adams Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
