John Joseph Hicks Sr., 85, of Twenty-seventh Street, NE, Conover, died Jan. 17, 2001, at N.C. Lutheran Home after a period of declining health. Born March 17, 1915, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Forrest Burkard and Elsie Craig Hicks. A member of St. Stephens Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, he was employed by Moretz Hosiery. He also was a member of American Legion Post 48, Masonic Lodge and Shriners. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda K. Hicks; three brothers; and four sisters. Survivors include his wife, Viola Stine Hicks; a son and daughter-in-law, John J. and Pat Hicks Jr. of Hickory; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia H. and Jake Stein of Minneapolis, Minn., and Nancy C. and Dale Liechty of Asheville; three brothers, Fred Hicks of Granite Falls, Edward Hicks of Hickory and William W. Hicks of Jacksonville, Fla.; two grandsons, John J. and Debroah Hicks III of Newton and James E. and Dana Hicks of Hickory; a granddaughter, Lora and Brent Eilderts of Manasass, Va.; and two great-grandsons, Austin Hicks and Garrett Hicks of Newton. MORGANTON - James Franklin “Junior” Price Jr., 75, of Williams Road, died Jan. 17, 2001, at Grace Hospital. Born Sept. 21, 1925, in Caldwell County, he was a son of the late James F. and Millie Bolick Price Sr. A Baptist, he retired from Henredon Furniture Co. and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Johnnie C. Alexander; a son, Calvin Eugene Price; a daughter, Mitzi Ladonia Price; three brothers, Ernest E. Price, Jay W. Price and Carston Eugene Price; and two sisters, Irene Everhardt and Mary Price. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca G. and the Rev. Charles Harrison of Morganton; a sister, Ola Mae Smith of Lenoir; a grandson, James Calvin Price of the home; a number of nephews and nieces; and a friend, Florence Kizer of Morganton. JAMES E. DOWNS
FALLSTON - The Rev. James Edward Downs, 75, of Ed Downs Road, died Jan. 18, 2001, at Britthaven of Morganton. Born Oct. 9, 1925, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Clarence D. and Maggie Ophillia Johnson Downs. A community pastor for more than 40 years, he was pastor of Zion Road Baptist Church in Morganton for 25 years. He was preceded in death by four brothers. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Lula Mae Hudson Downs; three daughters and sons-in-law, Kay and Bill Warlick, Frances and the Rev. Jerry Hudson of Casar and Joyce and Danny Hester of Lincolnton; a brother, Herman Downs of Lawndale; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted by the Revs. Jerry Hudson, Allen Fredell and Fred Tyler at 2 p.m. Saturday at Stamey Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Paul Baptist Church Cemetery. Cecil “Bobby” Robert Thain, 66, of Sixteenth Avenue, NE, formerly of Rockport, Texas, died Jan. 16, 2001, at the Brian Center East. Born Oct. 2, 1934, in North Yorkshire, United Kingdom, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Thain. He was the owner and operator of Mr. Oil in Austin, Texas. Survivors include two daughters, Juli M. Newton of the home and Cathy Lynn Rossberg of Austin, Texas; a sister, Vivienne Lodge of Northallerton, North Yorkshire, England. Joey Nouchi Lo, 1, of Hickory, died Jan. 15, 2001, in Valdese. Born Nov. 29, 1999, in Burke County, he was a son of Lee Lo and Blia Vue of Hickory. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Fa Tong Lo; and paternal grandmother, Cha Vang. Survivors include a brother, Randy Lo of Hickory; a sister, Lily Lo of Hickory; maternal grandfather, Chia Vue; and maternal grandmother, Sia Vang. AUBREY B. MYERS
LEXINGTON - Aubrey Brooks “Buddy” Myers, 80, of Maegeo Drive, died Jan. 19, 2001, at Lexington Memorial Hospital. Born Aug. 25, 1920, in Davidson County, he was a son of the late Allison L. and Susie Conrad Myers. A member of First Methodist Church, he was a former member of the Administrative Board and former president of the Spruill Sunday School Class. Retired as vice president of manufacturing with Burlington Furniture, he was a former member of the YMCA board and Lexington Chamber of Commerce. A Master Mason of Memorial Lodge 696, he was a Shriner and member of the Oasis Shrine Temple in Charlotte. A charter member and former president of Sapona Country Club, he was a member of the board of directors of the manufacturing division of the Southern Furniture Manufacturers Association. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Leo “Jack” Myers and Hoke Smith Myers; and two sisters, Ruth Myers Beck and Willie Mae Myers Barnes. Thomas Roland Morris Jr., 78, of Hickory, died Jan. 18, 2001, at his residence. Born Sept. 24, 1922, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Thomas R. and Lenore Eckard Morris Sr. A member of First United Methodist Church, he was employed by the city of Hickory for 21 years, and was an engineer with Hickory Springs Manufacturing for 19 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by a son, Patrick William Morris; and a brother, William Robert Morris. Survivors include his wife, Barbara C. WILKESBORO - Ronnie Wilburn Huffman, 56, of Brushy Mountain Road, Moravian Falls, died Jan. 17, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Born Dec. 15, 1944, in Wilkes County, he was a son of Lillian Lucille Adams Huffman Davis of Moravian Falls and the late Rommie Wilburn Huffman. A member of Liberty Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and church treasurer, he retired from General Electric Company in Hickory after 28 years and from Northwest Toyota in North Wilkesboro. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Grace Moore Huffman; a son, Rommie D. Huffman of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Talitha H. and Clifford Gwaltney of Hiddenite; a brother, Johnny Huffman of North Wilkesboro; three sisters, Ladonna Prevette and Shirley Frazier of Moravian Falls and Deena Watts of Denver; and three grandchildren, Brandon Gwaltney, Jessica Gwaltney and Jenna Gwaltney of Hiddenite. CONOVER - Frederick Charles Schwartz Sr., 84, of Terry Street, formerly of West Sand Lake, N.Y., died Jan. 16, 2001, at his residence. Born Dec. 17, 1916, in North Bethlehem, N.Y., he was a son of the late Jacob and Anna Kehrer Schwartz. A member of St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, ELCA, in Hickory, he served on the church council and choir. He also was a member of the property, cemetery and evangelism committees and Tuesday Morning Men's Group. Owner and operator of Beacon Hill Supply and The Rustic Shoppe in West Sand Lake, N.Y., he was a volunteer at Catawba Memorial Hospital for many years. A U.S. Air Force Veteran of World War II, he also was a security guard. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor Louise Southwell Schwartz; and a son, Carl Schwartz. Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, the Rev. Fred C. “Chuck” and Mary Schwartz Jr. of Ballston Lake, N.Y., and Paul Leonard Schwartz of Hickory; a sister, Millie Burkhart of Albany, N.Y.; a friend, Norma O'Grady of Conover; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. NEWTON - Juanita Furr Robinson, 69, of Providence Mill Road, Maiden, died Jan. 18, 2001, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory. Born May 12, 1931, in Catawba County, she was a daughter of the late William R. and Edna Little Furr. A member of First Baptist Church, she retired as a secretary from Braswell Furniture after 15 years. Survivors include her husband, Henry Robinson; two daughters, Connie Robinson Henline of Bethlehem and Susan Robinson Baker of Conover; three brothers, Robert Furr and Cyril Furr of Newton and Lowrean Furr of Charlotte; two sisters, Vivian Abernathy of Newton and Gilbretta McGee of Charlotte; four grandchildren, Michael Steven Henline, Stephanie Rochelle Henline, Suzanne Kristen Henline and Charles Michael Baker; and a great-grandchild, Dylan Michael Rios. Born Dec. 13, 1914, in Gaston County, he was a son of the late Milard and Bessie Garrison Abernathy. He retired as a truck driver for the North Carolina Department of Transportation after 30 years of service. Survivors include his wife, Mary Bea Finger Abernathy; three sons, Robert L. Abernathy of Gastonia, Benny C. Abernathy of Stanley and Miller B. Abernathy of Lincolnton; three daughters, Betty A. Caldwell and Carolyn M. NEWTON - Helen Lorene Mullinax Harbinson, 82, formerly of Thirteenth Street, died Jan. 19, 2001, at the Abernethy Retirement Center. Born Nov. 21, 1918, in Catawba County, she was a daughter of the late Loyd A. and Edna Reitzel Mullinax Sr. A member of St. Martin's Lutheran Church, she was a life member of the Lutheran Seminary Auxiliary. A retired sales associate and buyer for Belk Brumley Company of Newton, she was a sales associate at Belk in Catawba Mall for 32 years. A member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 16 in Newton, Catawba County Historical Association, Catawba County Genealogical Society, she was a supporter of the Green Room in Newton. She also was a former member of the Newton-Conover Business Organization and the Catawba County Handicapped Organization. He worked in the shipping department at Carolina Mills. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Lawrence Doran; a maternal grandfather, Ray Carpenter; a brother, Ryan Doran; and an aunt, Cheri Ideran. Nancy Moose Bostain, 87, of Hildebran, died Jan. 18, 2001, at Valdese General Hospital. Born Oct. 31, 1913, in Catawba County, she was a daughter of the late Franklin and Lulu Hope Aderholt Moose. A member of Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church, she was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll W. Bostain Sr.; a daughter, Linda Bostain Schweitzer; and a daughter-in-law, Loretta Bostain. A member of Calvary Baptist Church, he served as a deacon, Sunday school superintendent and was a member of the brotherhood. An apple farmer in Burke County, he retired from Drexel Heritage. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Noah Price and John Price; three sisters, Eva Price, Texie Whitaker and Bessie Coalson; and a son-in-law, Dudley F. GREER, S.C. - Ruth Richards Ammons, 72, of Johnson Road, died Jan. 18, 2001, at St. Frances Hospital. Born in Granite Falls, she was a daughter of Lois Watson Richards of Granite Falls, N.C., and the late W.P. Richards. A member of First Baptist Church, she retired as a nurse and was a volunteer for the Greer Community Ministries for more than 20 years. She was preceded in death by a brother, W.O. “Bud” Richards. LENOIR - Arthur Yale Braswell, 62, of Gravel Hill Road, died Jan. 19, 2001, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital. Born Nov. 12, 1938, in Caldwell County, he was a son of the late James Abe and Minerva Clark Braswell. He retired from the textile industry. He was preceded in death by a brother, Stony Braswell; and two sisters, Margaret Braswell and Phyllis Braswell. Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Williams Braswell; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Kim Tilger, Sherri Braswell and Darlene and Ronald Richardson of Lenoir and Charlene and Claude Presnell of Granite Falls; three brothers, Landon Braswell of Granite Falls, Jimmy Braswell of Lenoir and Jackie Braswell of Lexington; four sisters, Mary Barswell of Oak Island, Edna Todd and Linda Cromer of Sherrills Ford and Billie Sue Morrison of Granite Falls; nine grandchildren; and a friend, Sue Jones. The funeral will be conducted by the Revs. Kenneth Braswell and David McNeil at 2 p.m. Sunday at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. GRAHAM - Mildred Walker Thornton, 73, of Thompson Mill Road, died Jan. 18, 2001, at Alamance Regional Medical Center in Burlington after a period of declining health. Born in Catawba County, she was a daughter of the late Sidney M. and Lula Suphin Walker. A member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, she retired from Pickett Hosiery Mill. She was preceded in death by a son, Johnny Wilkinson. Survivors include her husband, James Donald Thornton; four sons, Jimmy Wilkinson of Hickory, Todd Thornton of the home, Bryan Thornton of Snow Camp and Jeff Thornton of Swepsonville; two brothers, Max Walker and Tom Walker of Hickory; two sisters, Sadie Mays and Thelma Hefner of Hickory; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. LENOIR - Kevin White, 39, of Corpening Place, NW, died Jan. 15, 2001, at his residence. Born Aug. 31, 1961, in Caldwell County, he was a son of Frances White. A member of Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, he was a member of the Men's Choir. He worked in the sanitation department for the city of Lenoir. He was preceded in death by his foster father, Russell Dixon; and two sisters, Helen White and Karen White. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Stephanie Connelly White; two sons, Alshajuan Logan of Lenior and Kevin Dovon White Jr. of the home; a daughter, Kelish Ann White of the home; four brothers, Audie White of Portsmouth, Va., Jeffery White of the home, Joey White of Wilkesboro and Marlon White of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three sisters, Shelia W. Jimenez of Chesapeake, Va., Deborah Dixon of Omaha, Neb., and Charresia White of Buffalo, N.Y.; and two foster sisters, the Rev. Burnette Burgess of Morganton and Melodie Boone of Charlotte. LINCOLNTON - Marie Gilbert Leatherman, 75, of Cat Square Road, Vale, died Jan. 18, 2001, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Born March 5, 1925, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late Andy and Della Ritchie Gilbert. A homemaker, she was a volunteer with Linc Meals of Christian Ministries and worked in the family apple business. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Dale Leatherman; and a brother, James Gilbert. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Judi Leatherman of Clover, S.C.; two daughters, Beth L. Peterinelli of Conover and Andie Leatherman of Lincolnton; two brothers, Hoarce Gilbert of Iron Station and Wray Gilbert of Sherrills Ford; a sister, Willena G. Rhyne of Vale; three grandchildren, Krys Heafner, Wendy Beal and Clay Leatherman of Vale; and seven great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Ed Benfield at 3 p.m. Sunday at Palm Tree United Methodist Church. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Joey Nouchi Lo, 1, of Hickory, died Jan. 15, 2001, in Valdese. Born Nov. 29, 1999, in Burke County, he was a son of Lee Lo and Blia Vue of Hickory. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Fa Tong Lo; and paternal grandmother, Cha Vang. Survivors include a brother, Randy Lo of Hickory; a sister, Lily Lo of Hickory; maternal grandfather, Chia Vue; and maternal grandmother, Sia Vang. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Catawba Memorial Park. The family will be at Catawba Funeral Home from 8 a.m. today to 2 p.m. Sunday.
