FALLSTON - James Alston Matthews, 76, of Willis Road, died Feb. 1, 2001, at Lincoln Medical Center. Born April 13, 1924, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late J. Lester and Ida Rhoney Matthews. A member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church, he retired from Drexel Furniture Company in Hickory and was a member of North Brook Volunteer Fire Department. He was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Matthews; and two grandchildren, Coleen Mann and Alston Matthews. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Elaine Houser Matthews; a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Scottie Matthews of Vale; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ida M. and Lewis Hildebran Jr. of Hildebran and Edith and Colen Mann of Sunshine; two brothers, Glenn Matthews and Harold Matthews of Vale; three sisters, Virginia Leonhardt of Vale and Lunet Deal and Eunice Fisher of Hickory; seven grandchildren, Lorrie Patton, Mikle Ruppe, Chad Matthews, Daniel Mann, Misty Johnson, Ruth Mann and Tiffany Matthews; and three great-grandchildren, Shellie Parton, Mikle Ruppe Jr. and Justin Ruppe. MORGANTON - Arnell Corpening Thomas, 67, of West Ninety-seventh Street, Los Angeles, Calif., died Jan. 25, 2001, at her residence after a period of declining health. Born Aug. 7, 1933, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late Ira W. and Mary Elizabeth Harshaw Corpening. A former member of Hartland Church of God, she retired as a clerk from AAA after 10 years of service. She was preceded in death by her first husband, John Adam Burgess Jr.; her second husband, Alexander Jones; a daughter, Victory Ann Jones; and a brother, Odell Corpening. Survivors include four sons and a daughter-in-law, Steven Lee Burgess, John A. and Cheryl Burgess III of Morganton, Calvin Alexander Jones of Los Angeles, Calif., and Ricky Cornelious Jones of Lancaster, Calif.; four daughters and a son-in-law, Dorothy Burgess Day of Charlotte, Sharon Diane Thomas of Los Angeles, Calif., Tammy T. and Harold Cade of Victoville, Calif., and Jacqueline Michelle Thomas of the home; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill A. and Rose Corpening and Teddy I. Born Oct. 29, 1927, in Lynn, Mass., she was a daughter of the late Gerald and Nora Hudson. Survivors include her husband, Clayton A. Nichols; two sons, Chris Nichols of Lincolnton and Philip Dale Ryder of California; a daughter, Deborah Ryder of Asheville; two sisters, Eileen Amore of Danvers, Mass., and Mary Stoddart of Lynn, Mass.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. NEWTON - Daisy Hoyle Frye, 77, of Dove Street, died Feb. 1, 2001, at Catawba Memorial Hospital in Hickory. Born March 16, 1923, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late Andy J. and Doshie Williams Hoyle. A member of Living Word Pentecostal Holiness Church, she retired from Hickory Chair after 20 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Frye; and a brother, Clarence Hoyle. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Everette and Joyce Frye and Jerry and Sherry Frye of Newton; a sister, Mary Alice Shrum of Maiden; and four grandchildren, Ryan Frye, Justin Frye, Adam Frye and Christopher Frye. MORGANTON - Doris Lee Rutherford Forney, 67, of Browning View Road, died Jan. 30, 2001, at Valdese General Hospital after a period of declining health. Born July 31, 1933, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late James A. and Laura Jane McDowell Rutherford. A member of Shiloh A.M.E. Church, she was a member of the Stewardess Board No. 2 and the food committee. A member of the Cancer Society and the Burke County Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, she retired as an inspector from Drexel Heritage Furnishings Inc. after 25 years of service. She was preceded in death by two brothers, James Robert Rutherford and Leroy Rutherford; and a sister, Texie Rutherford Forney. Survivors include a son, Roger Rutherford Sr. of Morganton; two daughters, Gladys Rutherford of Morganton and Patricia Jackson of Marion; three brothers, Billy Joe Rutherford and Ernest Rutherford of Morganton and Paul Edward Rutherford of Philadelphia, Pa.; four sisters, Flossie M. VALDESE - Robert Lynn “Mouse” Franklin, 50, of Holland Drive, Morganton, died Feb. 1, 2001. Born Jan. 2, 1951, in Burke County, he was a son of Cleta Baker Franklin of Valdese and the late Johnny B. Franklin. He was employed by Valdese Housing Authority. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Johnny L. and Teresa Franklin of Connelly Springs and Robert Allen Franklin of Morganton; two sisters, Lisa Karen Blackman of Rockingham and Ellan Kay Franklin of Morganton; and two granddaughters, Heather Tevepaugh and Serena Lynn Franklin of Connelly Springs. WILLIAM A. ROCAP Jr.
William Allen Rocap Jr., 83, of Conover, died Jan. 31, 2001, at Frye Regional Medical Center. Born Nov. 8, 1917, in Philadelphia, Pa., he was a son of the late William and Dorothea McCreary Sr. A member of Crossroads Community Church in Stanley, he retired as a chemist in the printing industry and from Meredith Corp., formerly of Newton. A former Boy Scout leader and Scout master, he was a member of Order of the Arrow. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he was a Naval Officer and served in Naval Reserve. A former teacher in graphic arts with Catawba Valley Community College, he served as an elder for more than 50 years in various Presbyterian churches. Survivors include his wife, Kathryn Marie Saybolt Rocap; a son, William Allen Rocap III; two daughters and a son-in-law, Ruth Elaine Rocap of Greenville, S.C., and Elizabeth Rocap and Arne Thompson of Ridgeland, Wis.; five grandchildren, William Allen Rocap IV, Nathan Andrew Rocap, Eric Matthew Thompson, Ian Rolf Thompson and Kathryn Nell Benville Thompson; and a number of nephews and nieces. MORGANTON - Alberta Butler Spake, 97, of Riverside Drive, died Jan. 31, 2001, at her residence. Born March 18, 1903, she was a daughter of the late Dillion A. and Margaret Allen Butler. A member of First Baptist Church, she was a member of the choir, taught Sunday school and was superintendent of the junior department. A member of the Schubert Music Club and Study Club, she was a teacher in Morganton from 1927 to 1939 and taught first- and second-graders in Glen Alpine from 1953 to 1970. She was preceded in death by her husband, Yates Ellis Spake Sr.; three brothers; and three sisters. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Yates E. and Joyce Huston Spake Jr. of Boone; four grandchildren and three grandchildren-in-law, Carl Y. and Mary Spake, Susan S. and Rick Alsup, Laura Spake and Heather and Rick Montgomery; and eight great-grandchildren. LENOIR - Estelle Cloer Smith, 85, of Hudson, died Feb. 1, 2001, at Frye Regional Medical Center. Born Nov. 12, 1915, in Caldwell County, she was a daughter of the late George T. and Belle Moss Cloer. A member of First Baptist Church of Hudson, she was a member of the church choir and a Sunday school teacher. A homemaker, she was a member of the local Red Cross and a blood drive coordinator. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence Cloer and Ervin Cloer; and a sister, Grace Cloer McLean. Survivors include her husband, Henry Brandon Smith; two sons, Larry Brandon Smith and Robert Adrian Smith of Hickory; a daughter, Brenda Smith White of LaCrosse, Wis.; a brother, Willard “Bill” Cloer of Hudson; and six grandchildren. A member of Shiloh Trulight Church in Mint Hill, she retired from W. T. Grant Department Store. She was preceded in death by her husband, Reece Hampton Morgan Sr.; four brothers, Martin Leonard Greene Jr., Conley Franklin Greene Sr., Claude James Greene, Ralph Edsel Greene Sr.; two sisters, Mary Blanche Greene Bartlett and Mayme Agnes Greene Crowell; and two infant great-grandchildren. Born Oct. 23, 1921, in Caldwell County, she was a daughter of the late R.R. and Neta Killian Smith. A Baptist, she was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by a brother; three sisters; and a great-grandson. Survivors include her husband, Zennie Lingafelt; three sons, the Rev. Born Feb. 18, 1916, in Haywood County, he was a son of the late Oliver H. and Talitha Belle Warren Parton. He served in the U.S. Navy. A member of St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, he was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 48. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he retired as a superintendent from Jack Sipe Construction after 35 years of service. He is preceded in death by an infant brother; two sisters, Louise Sigmon and an infant; and a brother-in-law, Cloyd L. Eckard. Born September 23, 1928, in Wilkes County, he was a son to the late Rudy B. and Martha Griffin Parsons. He served in the U.S. Navy and Merchant Marines. He was preceded in death by three brothers; and a sister. A member of Bethel United Methodist Church, he was a former steel construction worker and retired from Henredon Manufactoring after 28 years of service. CHAPEL HILL - Martin F. Massoglia, 84, died February 1, 2001, at Carolina Meadows. A U.S. Army colonel who led his battalion ashore on D-Day, he retired from the military. Survivors included his wife of 55 years, Dr. Elinor Tripato Massoglia; six children, Martin F. Massoglia of North Hills, Calif., Charles L. Massoglia of Mason, Mich., Jon Massoglia Silvermoon of Eugene, Ore., Mary Ann Massoglia of Hickory, Michael P. Massoglia of Winson-Salem and Judy Massoglia Holt Lancaster, S.C.; 17 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. CONOVER - Muriel Marie Cooper Mingus, 77, of North Gaither Avenue, Newton, died Feb. 2, 2001, at her residence. Born April 6, 1923, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter to the late John E. and Fannie Jane Tutherow Cooper. A member of St. John's Lutheran Church, she retired from the hoisery industry. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Edward Mingus; two sisters, Pauline Poteat and Dorothy Sharp; a grandson, Larry Mingus Jr.; and a great-granddaughter, Ashley Mingus. Survivors include three sons and two daughters-in-law, Paul and Becky Mingus of Newton, Mitchell E. Mingus of Conover and Larry and Helen Mingus of Vale; two daughters and son-in-law, Linda and Ernest Elliott and Jane and Richard Sigmon of Conover; two sisters, Eva Goforth of Newton and Barbara Willis of Maiden; 12 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Scott Johnson at 4:30 p.m. today at her church. MORGANTON - Sadie Shuford Grindstaff, 88, of Mountain View St., Drexel, died Feb. 3, 2001, at Valdese General Hospital. Born June 2, 1912, in Burke County, she was the daughter of the late Jones G. and Donnie Lingerfelt Shuford. She was a member of Drexel First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dunbar Lewis Grindstaff; two brothers; and two sisters. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Wayne Berry of Upland, Calif.; a brother, Guy Shuford of Spruce Pine; and three sisters, Bessie Shuford of Morganton, Robbie S. GRANITE FALLS - Eula Bell Smith Lingafelt, 79, of Catherines Lane, Hickory, died Feb. 2, 2001, at Frye Regional Medical Center. Born Oct. 23, 1921, in Caldwell County, she was a daughter of the late R.R. and Neta Killian Smith. A Baptist, she was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by a brother; three sisters; and a great-grandson. Survivors include her husband, Zennie Lingafelt; three sons, the Rev. Born May 4, 1921, in Alexander County, she was a daughter of the late Ransom S. and Rosa Lail Fox. A member of Liledoun Baptist Church, she retired as a textile worker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Nelson Jenkins; a daughter, Rosann Jenkins Pruitt; two brothers, Graydon Atwell Fox and Cletus Andrew Fox; an infant sister; and a grandson. Lois Hall Moretz, 76, of Hickory, died February 2, 2001, at Frye Regional Medical Center. Born March 10, 1924, in Caldwell County, she was a daughter of the late Robert M. and Callie White Hall. A member of Mount Bethel United Methodist Church, she owned and operated Lois's Beauty Shop. She was preceded in death by three brothers; and three sisters. Survivors include her husband, H. Bruce Moretz; two sons and daughters-in-law, Alvin B. and Cathy Moretz of Kings Mountain and Dewitt C. and Cathey Moretz of Hickory; a daughter and son-in-law, Wayburn M. and Gary L. GASTONIA - Hayward “Rex” Dillard Raxter, 71, of 3620 Kings Mountain Highway, died February 2, 2001, at Iredell Memorial Hospital in Statesville. Born September 25, 1929, in Gaston County, he was a son of the late Lester D. and Millie Turbyville Raxter. A member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church, he was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He as a security guard with Wix Corporation and worked at the DeTox Center. Survivors include his wife, Corrinne Coe Raxter; four sons; three daughters; a brother, Bob Raxter of Gastonia; three sisters, Judy Ferebee of Hickory, Jeralene Raxter of Gastonia and Glenda Anthony of Gastonia; and eleven grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. Rex Adkins at 7 p.m. Monday at Victory Baptist Church.
