A member of Clinton Tabernacle AME Zion Church, he was a former employee of Paul Lavitt Mills. Survivors, in addition to his parents, include a son, Gregory Stewart Hoyle of Hickory; two brothers, Billy Rose Jr. of Durham and Mark Elliott Rose of Hickory; four uncles, J.C. Grier and Eugene Rose of Hickory, and Edward Lee Jr. and Alvin K. Rose of New York; six aunts, Betty Grier and Mozelle Rose of Hickory, Pamela Allison of Michigan City, Ind., Mary Catherine Williams and Shirley Simpson of New York and Virginia Graves of Falls Church, Va.; a nephew, Mark Kelsey Rose of Hickory; and a number of other relatives and friends. GRANITE FALLS - Ollievee Bolick Mitcham, 89, of Sunset Street, died Feb. 4, 2001, at Camelot-Manor Nursing Care Facility. Born Aug. 17, 1911, in Alexander County, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Mamie Austin Bolick. A member of Center Grove Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher for more than 40 years, she was a homemaker and foster grandparent for Western Carolina Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Mitcham; two sons, Fred Mitcham and Glenn Mitcham; two brothers, Arnold Bolick and Forrest Bolick; a sister, Rosalee Edwards; a grandson, Ronald Glenn Mitcham; and a great-grandson, Bruce Dixon Williams. Survivors include two sons, Wayne Mitcham of Florence, S.C., and Jerry Mitcham of Hickory; five daughters, Verda McRary of Hudson, Rachel Miller of Newton, and Violet Titus, Shirley Reid and Gaynell Bollinger of Granite Falls; a brother, Dexter Bolick of Hudson; two sisters, Lona Belle Cline of Lenoir and Lucille Mitcham of Hudson; 20 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. TAYLORSVILLE - Ned Pennell, 63, of Rocky Face Church Road, died Feb. 4, 2001, at his residence after a period of declining health. Born April 7, 1937, in Alexander County, he was a son of the late Ray and Maebelle Herman Pennell. A member of Rocky Face Baptist Church, he retired from Clayton-Marcus. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Galloway Pennell; three brothers, James Pennell and two infants; and three sisters, Faye Childers, Norene Pennell and an infant. Survivors include a son, Jimmy D. Born Dec. 8, 1931, in Iredell County, he was a son of the late Issac C. and Jettie Day York. A member of Lewis Baptist Church, he retired from the furniture industry and served in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Call York; two sons, Robert Curtis York Jr. and Perry Lee York; a daughter, Doris Marie York; four brothers, Haskel York, I.C. York, Harvey York and Paul York; four sisters, Minnie York, Pauline York, Irene Green and Marie Gregory; and a granddaughter, Brianna Paige VanZandt. WINSTON-SALEM - Justice Ashburn Crews Sr., 86, of Winston-Salem, died Feb. 4, 2001, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Born April 16, 1914, in Forsyth County, he was a son of the late James M. and Louisa Victoria Matthews Crews. A member of Bunker Hill Primitive Baptist Church, he was a former member of the Winston-Salem Symphony Orchestra. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Griffin Crews; and a daughter, Judy Lane Atwood. Born Jan. 19, 1948, in Catawba County, she was a daughter of the late Charles Henry Michael and Juanita Cloer Duncan. A member of Tri-City Baptist Church, she was a substitute teacher for Catawba County Schools. A member of First United Methodist Church, he was a brick mason and a U.S. Army veteran who served in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe in World War II. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Brooks; a brother; and a sister. CONOVER - Martin Luther McRee, 83, of Conover, died Feb. 5, 2001, at Catawba Memorial Hospital. Born Oct. 28, 1917, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Robert L. and Lottie Yount McRee. A member of Concordia Lutheran Church, he retired as branch manager and board member from First Federal Saving and Loan. A member of the Carolina Collector's Club and the Lutheran Laymen's League, he was a U.S. Army veteran who fought in the European Theater during World War II. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Amy Carol McRee Campbell Hall; a brother, Elmer McRee; and a sister, Helen Marie McRee. Survivors include his wife, Carol Fentress McRee; a son, Timothy Martin McRee of Conover; a brother, Rudy McRee of Conover; six grandchildren, Bonnie White, Chrissie Campbell, Henry McRee, Christian McRee, Hannah Hall and Nathan Hall; and a great-grandchild, Madison Leigh White. Born in North Wilkesboro, she was a member of Forest Hills Baptist Church and a former member of Lower Creek Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy E. Thompson; a brother, Granville Hincher; and two sisters, Blanche Byrd and Marzelle Taylor. Born Aug. 17, 1905, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late Pink and Mary Jane Mitchell. A member of Brookwood Baptist Church, she retired from Grace Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Mull; a son, Robert Mull; six brothers; and two sisters. VALDESE - Annie Stamey Buff Abee, 92, of Drexel, died Feb. 5, 2001, at Autumn Care Nursing Center after a period of declining health. Born March 30, 1909, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late Marvin and Jeanettie Poteat Stamey. A member of Connelly Springs Freewill Baptist Church, she was an honorary grandmother of the church youth group. She was preceded in death by two sons, William Earl Buff and Marvin “Bud” Buff; two daughters, Elouise Messer and Eula Mae Costner; a brother; and three sisters. Survivors include a son, Ray Buff of Glen Alpine; four daughters, Minnie Benfield and Lois Benfield of Morganton, Kathleen “Kitten” Buff of Drexel and Jeanette Nichols of Robinsville; four brothers, Alfred Stamey and Andrew Stamey of Glen Alpine, David Stamey of Drexel and Harold Stamey of Morganton; two sisters, Catherine Hatley and Eliza Mae Carswell of Drexel; 17 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a number of stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren. A member of Rocky Springs United Methodist Church, she attended Friendship Lutheran Church and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Thomas Morrison; and a brother. A member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Denver, he retired from Clyde Fabrics. He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Sherrill; four sisters, Jessie Harwell, Azailee Sherrill, Shasta Faulkner and Vennie Johnson; and a grandson, Ashley Sherrill. Born Jan. 12, 1932, in Caldwell County, he was a son of the late Russell and Mamie Moore Mathes Sr. He was employed in the rubbing and shipping department at Bernhardt Plant 3 in Lenoir for 10 years, and he served in the U.S. Navy. He was preceded in death by a son, Johnny Mathes; an infant daughter; a brother, Russell Mathes Jr.; and a sister, Annie Mae Mathes. VALDESE - John Burke Waters, 55, of Alpine Street, Rutherford College, died Feb. 6, 2001, at Valdese General Hospital after a period of declining health. Born Nov. 21, 1945, in York, S.C., he was a son of the late Fred O. and Mary Lee Waters. A U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, he received a Bronze Star for his service in the 1st Air Calvary. He also was a member of East Burke Investment Club and the Rutherford College planning board of directors. He was preceded in death by a brother, Fred Waters Jr.; and a sister, Judy Waters. LENOIR - Robert “Bob” Lee Laws Jr., 74, of Powell Circle, died Feb. 5, 2001, at his residence. Born Jan. 20, 1927, in Virginia, he was a son of the late Robert Lee Laws Sr. and Minnie Proffit. A member of Nazareth Advent Christian Church, he retired from Caldwell Floor Covering. A merchant mariner, he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Coast Guard. He was preceded in death by two brothers, John Laws and Thomas Laws. LENOIR - Diamond Marvin Clarke, 90, of Old North Road, NW, died Feb. 5, 2001, at Lenoir Healthcare Center. Born Feb. 21, 1910, in Caldwell County, he was a son of the late Hugh David Lee and Mary E. Palmer Clarke. A member of First Presbyterian Church of Lenoir, he retired from the U.S. Post Office after 36 years of service and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by six brothers, Joseph Lee Clarke, Hernden Clarke, Colon Clarke, Spencer B. Clarke, Shuford Clarke and Clarence W.
