JACK L. LEATHERMAN
Jack Lee Leatherman, 80, of Hickory, died May 21, 2001, at Frye Regional Medical Center. Born Dec. 14, 1920, in Gaston County, he was a son of the late Forest E. and Maggie Vernie Brown Leatherman. A member of Palm Tree United Methodist Church in Vale, he retired from the U.S. Postal Service, having served as a postmaster in Vale and mail carrier. He also was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Azalee Clay Leatherman; two brothers, Gene Leatherman and Harold Hugh Leatherman; and two sisters, Jo Nan Raborn and Helen Sue Young. Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Philip and Malinda Leatherman and Troy Leatherman of Hickory; a daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Tom Beard of Hickory; three brothers, Bobby Leatherman and Teddy Leatherman of Vale, and James Leatherman of Lenoir; three sisters, Dean Reece of Chattanooga, Tenn., Peggy Francis of Midland, and Polly Anderson of Taylorsville; four grandchildren, Susan Setzer of Newton, Tim Leatherman of Thomasville, Bart Leatherman of Raleigh and Tyson Leatherman of Hickory; and three great-grandchildren, Carrie Setzer and Luke Setzer of Newton and Kailyn Bowman of Hickory. MAYNARD DEATON
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Maynard Deaton, 60, of East Main Street, Maiden, and formerly of Kings Mountain, died May 19, 2001, at his residence. Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Claude and Lona Belle Jenkins Deaton. He was a Baptist. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack Deaton and Ettra Deaton; and a sister, Geneva Deaton. Survivors include a daughter, Sonya Deaton of Grover; three brothers, James Deaton and Clarence Deaton of Kings Mountain and Stoy Deaton of Blacksburg, S.C.; a sister, Helen Owens of Kings Mountain; three nephews, Tim Payne, Roger Payne and Scott Payne; three nieces, Cynthia Lee, Libby Johnson and Barbara Sisk; a granddaughter, Heather Deaton of Grover; and a number of other nephews and nieces. CORNELIA G. ROLLINS
DUNCAN, S.C. - Cornelia Garner Rollins, 78, of Oaktree Street, Spartanburg, died May 21, 2001, at her residence. Born Dec. 14, 1922, in Spartanburg, she was a daughter of the late Eva Garner. A member of Parkway Freewill Baptist Church, she retired as a nurses aide. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alix Rollins. Survivors include two sons, Dean Rollins of Spartanburg and James Rollins of Pittsburgh, Pa.; a daughter, Merita Caldwell of Arkwright; a sister, Carolyn Eckerd of Hickory, N.C.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. David Moore at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cowpens Cemetery. LOIS S. WHISENANT
Lois Starnes Whisenant, 42, of New Farm Road, Granite Falls, died May 19, 2001, at her residence. Born Oct. 9, 1958, in Charleston, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Howard J. and Irene Keller Starnes. A member of Dudley Shoals Baptist Church, she was employed by Caldwell County Soil and Water Conservation. A member of the last graduating class of Granite Falls High School, she graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College with a degree in Christian education. She was a pianist for a combined 30 years in several churches: Poovey's Grove, Concord, First Baptist and Dudley Shoals, all in Granite Falls, and Antioch Baptist Church of Taylorsville. She also played piano at weddings and other occasions in the area. She was preceded in death by two foster brothers, John McLean and Stanford McLean. Survivors include her husband, Ed Whisenant; a son, Benjamin Whisenant of the home; a daughter, Brooke L. Whisenant of the home; a sister and brother-in-law, Amanda and Rick Winkler of Granite Falls; and two foster brothers, Roger Klutz of Asheville and George McLean of Granite Falls. The funeral will be conducted by the Revs. Don Ingle, Ron Winkler and Dennis Spivey at 4 p.m. Wednesday at her church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. MORGANTON - Greg "Snake” Pope, 39, of Casey's Ranch Road, died May 20, 2001, at his residence after a two-year period of declining health. Born June 24, 1961, in Iredell County, he was a son of Jerry Gray Pope of Mooresville and Marlene Hoke Miller of Statesville. A member of Oak Hill United Methodist Church, he was an employee of Torrington, a division of Ingersol-Rand in Rutherfordton. He also was a rodeo clown for a number of years. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Clyde and Mary Salome Hoke and Nellie and Carlie B. Pope. Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his wife, Debbie Cobb Pope; a daughter, Casey Pope of Stanley; a sister and brother-in-law, Kecia and Tim Ashe of Winnsboro, Texas; and two nephews, Tyler Ashe and Travis Ashe. MAIDEN - Jo Ann Arndt Eades, 69, of Sherrills Ford Road, Sherrills Ford, died May 20, 2001, at Abernethy Retirement Center. Born May 9, 1932, in Catawba County, she was a daughter of the late Albert D. and Lois Sherrill Arndt. She was a former employee at Camp Dogwood. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Eades, and a brother, Harold Arndt. Survivors include two brothers, Donald Arndt and Elmer Ray Arndt of Sherrills Ford; and a sister, Patricia Jones of Catawba. HOWARD G. WORKMAN
GRANITE FALLS - Howard Gene Workman, 73, of Newton, died May 20, 2001, after a brief illness. Born March 24, 1928, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Daniel and Lula Yancy Workman. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 at the age of 15, where he served aboard the USS A.J. Luke. He and the crew were decorated and received several unit citations for actions in the North Atlantic during World War II. A former employee of Burlington Industries and Providian Insurance, he was involved in Free Masonry and the Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Brown Workman, and a sister, Edith Helena Littlefield. Survivors include three sons and a daughter-in-law, Charles D. Workman of Statesville, Garry A. Workman of Christiansburg, Va., and Larry E. and Becky Workman of Radford, Va.; a daughter, Vivian E. Joyner of Hickory; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Glenn L. and Dorothy Workman and Williard L. and Dorothy Workman; a sister, Edna B. Gardner; two grandsons, Logan W. Workman and Aaron K. Workman; a granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Cheryl and Jessie McNeely; a great-grandson, Nicholas McNeely; a number of nephews and nieces; and friends, Clyde Bailey, Oneil Oates and Sonny Calder of Dillon, S.C. Willis Harmon Hollar, 75, of Greenwood Terrace, Granite Falls, died May 21, 2001, at Frye Regional Medical Center. Born Jan. 11, 1926, in Watauga County, she was a daughter of the late Boyd and Bessie James Harmon. A member of Concord Baptist Church in Granite Falls, she was employed by Lenoir-Rhyne College. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cloyd G. Hollar; a son, Gary Hollar; and two brothers, Robert Harmon and Max Harmon. Mary Anne Church, 53, of Hickory, died May 20, 2001, at Valdese Hospital. Born Aug. 6, 1947, in Hickory, she was a daughter of the late William and Beulah Martin. She was employed by Home Depot and was a former employee of Blue Ridge Community Action in Morganton. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Chris and Anita Church of Conover and Michael and Sandy Church of Hickory; a daughter and son-in-law, Christy and Craig Treadway of Valdese; a brother, William Ira Martin Jr. of Granite Falls; and three grandchildren, Corey Church, Nathan Treadway and Casey Church. Born Oct. 6, 1921, in Catawba County, she was a daughter of the late Bryson Buff and Charlotte Hefner Buff Deal. She was a former member of St. Andrews Lutheran Church in Hickory and St. Lukes Lutheran Church in Ocean Isle. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Conrad B. Fritz Sr.; and a stepfather, Cloyd Deal. Born Feb. 19, 1943, in Hildebran, N.C., he was a son of the late Charles L. and Maggie Brittian Wilson. Self-employed as a plumber, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps. A member of East Taylorsville Baptist Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher and served on the building committee, he was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the engineering division during World War II. A member of Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 84, in Taylorsville, he was self-employed as a building contractor. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Harrington Sr. and William Harrington; and two sisters, Christine Harrington and Eloise Sparks. A member of Yadkin Baptist Church, he was the owner of Dixie Fire and Safety Equipment Company. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Carol Elaine Ledford and Anita Marie Ledford; a brother, Max Ledford; and a sister, Rebecca Louise Ledford. MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. - Clara H. Thomas, 95, of Mount Pleasant, died May 21, 2001, at an area nursing home. Born in Stony Point, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Horace and Sally Morrow Hedrick. A member of Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church, she was a former organist at the church for more than 40 years and a piano teacher for more than 70 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce N. Thomas. Survivors include two sons, Dan E. Thomas of North Charleston and Lowell E. Thomas of Hickory, N.C.; a brother, Judge Fred Hedrick of Raleigh, N.C.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. NEWTON - The Rev. Dr. Harry D. Hawthorne, 82, of Geitner Avenue, died May 21, 2001, at the Abernethy Center. Born Dec. 29, 1918, in Lancaster, Pa., he lived with Mrs. George Schreiber in Lititz, Pa., after the death of his parents. He served as pastor of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Monroe; Morning Star Lutheran Church in Matthews; Beth Eden Lutheran Church in Newton; Emanuel Lutheran Church in High Point; First English Lutheran Church in Lockport, N.Y.; and Ascension Lutheran Church in Snyder, N.Y. After retirement, he served as vice pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church in Lancaster, N.Y., Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Amherst, N.Y.; St. Stephen's United Church of Christ in Amherst, N.Y.; Beth Eden Lutheran Church in Newton; Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Hickory; St. John's Lutheran Church in Statesville; and St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Hickory. He was also assistant pastor at Beth Eden Lutheran Church in Newton and regional coordinator for the Lenoir-Rhyne College $24,000,000 Centennial Appeal. Pastor Emeritus at Beth Eden Lutheran Church in Newton and Ascension Lutheran Church in Snyder, N.Y., he was director of National Lutheran Council Service Center in Monroe. He conducted services in German for P.O.W.'s at Camp Sutton. He was president of the Lenoir-Rhyne Alumni Association, the Newton-Conover Optimist Club, the Kiwanis Club of High Point and Hickory, and the High Point Executive Club. He was vice chairman of the Lenoir-Rhyne College board of trustees and the board of directors for the Lutheran Church Homes in Buffalo, N.Y. He was pastor to Lutheran students of High Point College and Daemon College in Snyder, N.Y. Chaplain for the Ismailia Tempel in Buffalo, N.Y., he was the guest minister and Pastor of the Week at the Holden Beach Interdenominational Chapel. GRANITE FALLS - Harold Dean Stilwell, 68, of Bowman Lowman Road, Hickory, died May 23, 2001, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory. Born March 17, 1933, in Caldwell County, he was a son of the late Edgar C. and Ollie Mae Godfrey Stilwell. A member of Liberty Baptist Church, he was an ordained minister and retired from Century Furniture. He was preceded in death by two brothers; and a sister. Survivors include his wife, Josephine G. LENOIR - Margaret Washington Darsie, 92, of Shaire Center Drive, died May 20, 2001, at the Shaire Center. Born Dec. 5, 1908, in Greensburg, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Carl A. and Agnes Patterson Washington. A former member of Homestead Baptist Church in Homestead, Pa., she was a solist and sang in the church choir. She also sang with the Munhall, Pa., Women's Club, and was a former member of Grace Baptist Church in Duluth, Ga. Retired from Greensburg Board of Education, she taught French and English at Greensburg Junior High School. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Leigh L. Darsie; and a brother, Carl Washington. Survivors include a son, Dr. James L. Darsie of Lenoir; three daughters and sons-in-law, Sue and Lealand Hardman of New Brighton, Minn., Dottie and Clarence Cadenhead of Atlanta, Ga., and Barbara and Robert Foreman of Stone Mountain, Ga.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Born May 6, 1910, in Catawba County, she was a daughter of the late Carl and Anna Clark Asbury. A member of Beth Eden Lutheran Church, she retired as an elementary school teacher. MORGANTON - Alta Sullivan Moore, 74, of Hillside Lane, died May 22, 2001, at Grace Hospital after a period of declining health. Born July 2, 1926, in Travis County, Texas, she was a daughter of the late William H. and Alma Daniels Sullivan. A member of First United Methodist Church in Morganton, she was a past president of the American Field Service (AFS) for foreign exchange students and the Pilot Club. Founder of the Anchor Club for the Burke County School System, she started the Burke County Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation. She was the supervisor of the payroll department and secretary to the president at Great Lakes Carbon Corp., secretary and treasurer of Moore Equipment Co. and vice president of A.L. Moore Sales. Survivors include her husband, A. Grier Moore Jr.; a sister, Doris Sullivan of Apache Junction, Ariz.; a brother-in-law and his spouse, John and Jane Moore of Charlotte; and two nieces, Grier Elizabeth Howell and Sadie Andress. CONOVER - Effie Francis Green Smith, 95, of the Abernethy Center, formerly of Lowrance Road, Catawba, died May 23, 2001, at the Abernethy Center. Born Aug. 20, 1905, in Haywood County, she was a daughter of the late Richard Western and Amanda Clark Green. A member of Catawba Valley Baptist Church, she taught elementary school for 39 years including 20 years in North Carolina and 19 years in Orange County, Va. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Horace N. Francis; her second husband, Oscar J. Smith; four brothers; and three sisters. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Gibson Beals. He retired as an air traffic controller for the Federal Aviation Administration in Jacksonville, Fla. He was preceded in death by a brother, Douglas Leon Phillips; and a grandson, Thomas Cody Phillips. Church for 20 years, she was director of the True Christ's children's choir and coordinator of the tape ministry. She was a former assistant property manager for Lang Leasing Company. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Lawrence and Mattie Perkins Michaux; her maternal grandparents, Arnie and Grace Horton Lipford. VALDESE - Glenn Ray Yoder, 71, died May 23, 2001. Born Dec. 22, 1929, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Lemuel and Cordie Mae Bowman Yoder. A member of Waldensian Presbyterian Church, he served as an elder, deacon, Sunday school superintendent, youth club director, youth fellowship advisor. A lifetime member of the Men of Church, he was chairman of the board for Agape, clerk of session, chairman of the service committee. A member of Monday Morning Prayer Group, he was a volunteer for the Good Samaritan Clinic and active on several other church committees. A member of the Affordable Housing Committee for the Town of Valdese, he was a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and was chosen as Man of the Year by the Jaycees. He was a former president of the Valdese Lions Club and served as Tail Twister. He was preceded in death by six brothers; and a sister. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Hughes Yoder; two daughters and a son-in-law, Lola Renee Yoder and Kymberly and Dean Pennington of Hickory; a sister, Pansy Y. Bumgarner of Conover; two granddaughters, Alexis Rae Pennington and Abigail Mae Pennington of Hickory; and an unborn grandson. A graveside service will be conducted by the Revs. Paul Felker and Field Russell at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Waldensian Presbyterian Church Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at his church. The family will remain at the church after the memorial service.
