HENRY L. SILVER
MORGANTON - Henry Lee Silver, 92, of North Green Street, died June 4, 2001, at Grace Hospital after a period of declining health. Born May 13, 1909, in Burke County, he was a son of the late David A. and Zeney Norman Silver. A member of El Bethel Baptist Church, he served as the church treasurer for 27 years. He also was a Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, deacon, brotherhood director and a member of adult men's Sunday school class. Retired from Drexel Heritage after 29 years of service, he was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and served in the Atlantic and Pacific. He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Theresa Kincaid Silver; two brothers, John Clarence Silver and Earl Douglas Silver; and a sister, Buena Coffey. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Sandi Silver of Melbourne, Fla.; a daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Ralph Saulman of Morganton; a brother, James Gaston Silver of Parker, Ind.; a sister, Lenni Harris of Morganton; three grandchildren and a granddaughter-in-law, Jonathan and Kelly Saulman, Phillip Silver and David Silver; two stepgrandchildren, Amy Hottle and Lisa Hottle; and a number of nephews and nieces. The funeral will be conducted by the Revs. Ron Cooper, David Bean and Jimmy Lambert at 1 p.m. today at his church. LENOIR - Lessie Mae Cheek Soots, 92, of Jennings Street, died June 6, 2001, at her residence. Born July 7, 1908, in Wilkes County, she was a daughter of the late George and Leevy Wadell Cheek. A homemaker, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Harrison Soots; two sons, Lester Soots and R.C. Soots; two daughters, Betsy Ruth Soots and Nancy Soots; three brothers, Barney Cheek, Roy Cheek and Arlie Cheek; and two sisters, Grace Handy and Birtie Rose. Survivors include four sons, John Harrison Soots Jr., Odell Buck Soots and Bobby Soots of Lenoir, Bill Soots of Hickory; a sister, Addie Bauguess of Winston-Salem; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. MAXINE A. STAMEY
LENOIR - Maxine Annas Stamey, 68, of Cajah Mountain Road, Hudson, died June 6, 2001, at Caldwell County Hospice. Born Feb. 21, 1933, in Caldwell County, she was a daughter of the late Grayson and Ollie Rolan Annas. A member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, she was office manager for Drum Oil Company for 31 years. She was instrumental in getting the town of Sawmills incorporated and served as one of its first council members. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Andrew Stamey; two brothers, Hansel Annas and June Annas; and a sister, Gertrude Drum. Survivors include two sons, Mitchell Stamey and Grayson Stamey of Sawmills; and three grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Duane Kuykendall at 2 p.m. Friday at her church. Harry Woolever Shuford, 73, died June 5, 2001. Born in Hickory, he was a son of the late Richard Harvey Shuford and Bertha Woolever Shuford Hill. A member of First Presbyterian Church of Athens, Ga., and Gridiron Secret Society, he was a commercial realtor. While retired, he worked in the state court of Clarke County with Judge Kent Lawrence. A graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College, he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Brady Shuford; two sons, Harry Woolever Shuford Jr. of Athens, Ga., and James Brady Shuford of Macon, Ga.; two daughters, Janet Shuford Lanier of Athens, Ga., and Brent Shuford Gunn of Macon, Ga.; a brother, Richard Harvey Shuford Jr. of Scottsboro, Ala.; a sister, Ellen Shuford Biggs Brevard of North Carolina; seven grandchildren, Beth Lanier of West, Ga., Uly Samuel Gunn III and Thomas Zebedee Lanier IV of Athens, Ga., Mary Kathryn Lanier of Atlanta, Ga., Robert Shuford Gunn, James Brady Shuford Jr. and Harry Anderson Shuford of Macon, Ga. MOORESVILLE - Winfred Howard Robinson, 83, of Sherrills Ford, died June 5, 2001, at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center in Mooresville. Born Sept. 13, 1917, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Grover C. and Eva Sherrill Robinson. A member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church in Sherills Ford, he retired as a deputy sheriff for Catawba County Sheriffs Department for a number of years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by a brother, William Roland Robinson. Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, Horace and Bettie Robinson of Landis; two sisters, Mabel E. Hostetter of Spring Valley, Calif., and Sue Christenbury of Sherrills Ford; a friend, Alma Reitzel of Newton; six nephews; and a niece. A graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. Grace Fox Chapman, 88, of Hickory, died June 5, 2001, at Camelot Manor in Granite Falls. Born June 11, 1912, in Keysville, Va., she was a daughter of the late Luther and Katie Reece Fox. A member of Winklers Grove Baptist Church, she was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband, William C. Chapman; three sons, Harold Richardson and Johnny Richardson of Pontiac, Mich., and Johnny Smith of Connelly Springs; four stepsons, William S. Chapman of Jasper, Ga., Lee D. Chapman of Zena, Ohio, Roy E. Chapman of Greensboro and Nicky Chapman of Conover; four stepdaughters, Alma R. Sizemore of Durham, Geraldine Chapman and Rita C. Crouch of Taylorsville and Patricia A. LINCOLNTON - Mary Chiccarelli Massey, 84, of Dave Peterson Lane, Vale, died June 5, 2001, at the Brian Center. Born May 7, 1917, in West Virginia, she was a daughter of the late James and Theresa Chiccarelli. She was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband, Ralph William Massey; a son, Robert Engstrom of Illinois; two daughters, Lorraine Reed of Mississippi and Martha Self of Vale; a stepson, Virgil Massey of South Carolina; three stepdaughters, Gladys Massey of Maiden, Alta Massey of South Carolina and Cathy Willis of Moorehead City; a sister, Leona Girimont of Michigan; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Born July 23, 1947, in Catawba County, she was a daughter of Mary Lee Cline of Hickory and the late George Cline Sr. She was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church of Claremont. She was preceded in death by a brother, Daniel Cline. NEWTON - Mary Geneva Walker Johnson, 85, of Eighth Avenue, SW, Conover, died June 11, 2001, at Frye Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. Born Nov. 18, 1915, in Catawba, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Mack and Forney Walker. A member of Thomas Chapel AME Zion Church, where she was a member of the choir and missionary department, she retired from Trendline Furniture Co. She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Johnson Sr.; a son, Bobby Lee Johnson; a daughter, Bertha Pegram; two brothers, two sisters, a grandson, Shamir Grier; and a granddaughter, Janice Johnson. Survivors include six sons and four daughters-in-law, Calvin and Annie Johnson Jr. of Lincolnton, Henry and Zula Johnson, Franklin Johnson and Mack Johnson of Conover, and Milton and Janice Johnson and Terry and Linda Johnson of Hickory; five daughters and four sons-in-law, Kathleen Johnson and Mary Strickland of the home, Willie Strickland of Georgetown, S.C., and Lillie M. and Robert Turner Jr., Jean and Claude Grier and Brenda and Jerry Powell of Conover; 36 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and a number of other relatives and friends. STONY POINT — Bliff William Chapman, 84, of East Lackey Farm Road, died June 12, 2001, at Iredell Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Born June 12, 1917, in Alexander County, he was a son of the late Franklin L. and Lucy Teague Chapman. A member of Beulah Baptist Church in Statesville where he was a deacon and member of the men’s No. 2 Sunday school class, he retired as a self-employed salesman. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ray Chapman and Billy Chapman. Survivors include his wife, Frances Kerley Chapman; a daughter and son-in-law, June Ann and Ed Corren of Scottsboro, Ala.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Redge and Hazel Chapman of Taylorsville, Coy “Bo” Chapman and Turner and Ruby Chapman of Jacksonville, Fla., and Stella Kerley Combs of Stony Point; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Cecil and Buck Lail of Troutman, Faye Lail of Lenoir and Ann “Totty” and Wayne Gentry of Alaska; and a number of nephews, nieces and friends. LENOIR — William Glenn Swanson, 75, of Hobe Sound, Fla., died June 9, 2001, at Martin Memorial Medical Center in Florida. Born Feb. 26, 1926, in Caldwell, N.C., he was a son of the late William G. Swanson and Pearl I. Nelson. He retired from Pratt and Whitney Aircraft and was a U.S. Navy veteran of 21 years, having served during World War II, Korean conflict and Vietnam era. He received six medals, including the Silver Star. He was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Swanson. Survivors include his wife, Jane Ann Swanson; a sister-in-law, Pauline Swanson; a nephew; and a niece. A graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. Born July 4, 1903, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late Monroe and Geneva Orders Wilson. She was a former employee of Home Laundry and of Grace Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy S. Johnson; two sons, Gilbert Johnson and Guy S. Johnson Jr.; a daughter, Mildred Johnson; five brothers, Zonnie Wilson, Otis Wilson, Charles Wilson, Tillman Wilson and Robey Wilson; and a sister, Mary Dale. Shirley Jeannette Lail Yount, 66, of Hickory, died June 10, 2001, at her residence. Born June 23, 1934, in Catawba County, she was a daughter of the late Paul C. and Annie Gilbert Lail. A member of Christ Lutheran Church, she was a homemaker and member of Hickory Community Theatre and Stephens Ministry, the board of elders at her church and a social ministry committee. She also supported a Boy Scout Troop and was on the board of directors of the Hickory Soup Kitchen. Born March 23, 1908, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Jacob Levi Canipe and Essie Eudora Settlemeyer. He was self-employed as a farmer and had served in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his wife, Cordie Clark Canipe; two sons, Glenn Canipe and Ray Canipe; and a daughter, Joyce Young. Survivors include four sons, Garland Canipe of Morvin and Everette Canipe, Bill Canipe and Steve Canipe of Maiden; three daughters, Lois C. Mellen and Vera Foster of Maiden and Frances Dellinger of Lincolnton; a brother, Luther Canipe of Fallston; three sisters, Minnie Belle Carpenter of Lincolnton, Violet Moore of Maiden and Claudie Hildebran of Hildebran; 39 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. LENOIR — Granville Robbins, 82, of Redcliff Drive, died June 11, 2001, at Caldwell County Hospice. Born Aug. 23, 1918, in Caldwell County, he was a son of the late Roy and Sophia Turnmire Robbins. A member of Hartland Baptist Church, he retired as chief building inspector for Caldwell County. He was preceded in death by a son, LeRoy Robbins; three brothers, Hill Robbins, Henry Robbins and Charlie Robbins; and two sisters, Georgia R. Smith and Lelia R. Turner. Survivors include his wife, Edith Lee Robbins; two sons, Mac Robbins of Lenoir and Edward Robbins of Hudson; a sister, Mollie Robbins of Lenoir; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Born Nov. 2, 1958, he was a son of Ruby Ham Matheson Leonard of Hiddenite and the late Herman M. Matheson. He was a construction worker. MORGANTON — Irving “Irv” C. Ellis Sr., 66, of Warrior Fork Trail, died June 11, 2001, at Grace Hospital. Born Feb. 6, 1935, in New Paltz, N.Y., he was a son of the late Charles H. and Evelyn Ayers Ellis Sr. A member of the U.S. Air Force, having served in the Korean conflict, he retired from Central Hudson Gas and Electric Company in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. He was a member of Adonai Lodge 718, New Paltz Elks 2568, Morganton Moose Lodge 193, Order of the Eastern Star and Central Hudson Quarter Century Club. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Robert Visconti Boice. Survivors include his wife, Alice May Wendover Ellis; two sons, Irving Ellis Jr. of New Paltz, N.Y., and Glenn Ellis of Long Grove, Okla.; two daughters, Diane Olson of Port Orange, Fla., and June Boice of Connelly Springs; four sisters, Joyce May of Wallkill, N.Y., Lorraine McMickle of Florida, Marilyn Birch of Lyman, Wyo., and Beverly Ellis of Connelly, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. EMMETT C. WILLIS III
Emmett Clive Willis III, 51, of Northlakes Drive, died June 11, 2001, in Lincoln County. Born May 4, 1950, in Hickory, he was a son of Mary Elliott Willis Reber of Denver, N.C., and the late Emmett Clive Willis Jr. A member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, he was owner of Machine Designs. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Sherry Frye Willis; a son, Emmett Clive Willis IV of York, Pa.; a daughter and son-in-law, Lauren Willis and Steven McCoy of Fort Mills, S.C.; a brother and sister-in-law, Craig Elliott and Libby Willis of Denver, N.C.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Hazel Willis and Ramsay Abernethy of Hickory and Helen Willis and Ben Miller of Columbia, S.C.; a grandson, Jackson Cole McCoy of Fort Mills, S.C.; Kristin Walls of Brattleboro, Vt.; and a number of nephews and nieces. The funeral will be conducted by the Revs. Thomas Gibson and Lory Beth Huffman at 1 p.m. Thursday at his church. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. IDA S. McCURRY
MORGANTON — Ida Smith McCurry, 75, of Conley Road, died June 11, 2001, at Grace Hospital. Born Aug. 18, 1925, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie and Olive Waters Smith. She was a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mack McCurry; four brothers; and two sisters. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Tony Chapman of Belmont; a sister, Belle Cranford of Thomasville; four grandchildren, Amanda Chapman and Sarah Chapman of Belmont, Mark Chapman of Lincolnton and Toni Avery of Graham; three great-grandchildren, Colleen Chapman and Nate Chapman of Lincolnton and Jasmine Avery of Graham; and a number of nephews and nieces. The funeral will be conducted by the Revs. Steve Sells and Raymond Johns at 2 p.m. Thursday at her church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. EARL McREE
MAIDEN — Robert Earl McRee, 71, of Golf Course Road, died June 10, 2001, at his residence. Born April 24, 1930, in Lincoln County, he was a son of Sarah Ethel Motz McRee of Maiden and the late Robert Glenn McRee. A member of St. Matthews United Church of Christ, he was employed with McCreary Modern as a truck driver. He also served in the U.S. Air Force. Survivors, in additon to his mother, include his wife, Shirley Fortenberry McRee; a son, Allen Bolick of Lincolnton; three daughters and a son-in-law, Gail M. and Tim Hefner, Cindy M. Lester and Robin Burgess of Maiden; a brother, Bill McRee of Maiden; a sister, Dianne M. Setzer of Cayce, S.C.; four grandchildren, Robert Hefner, Benjamin Burgess, Candall Lester and Heather Black; and a great-grandchild, Raegan Black. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. MORGANTON — Dorothy Garrison Sparks, 92, of Eastview Nursing Home, Connelly Springs, died June 12, 2001, at Grace Hospital after a period of declining health. Born April 10, 1909, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late John E. and Anna Hoke Garrison. A charter member of Calvary Lutheran Church, she was an employee of the former Eloise Dress Shop in Morganton and retired from Lazarus as a sales clerk in the Ladies department. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Albert Sparks; a daughter, Patricia Paschall; four brothers, Clarence Garrison, Clyde Garrison, Raymond Garrison and Vernon Garrison; and a sister, Elsie Hahn. Survivors include a son, John Sparks of Kansas City, Mo.; a son-in-law, Lewis Paschall; four grandchildren, John Sparks Jr. and Carolyn McShannon of Kansas City, Mo., Timothy T. Paschall of Gastonia, and Dr. David L. Paschall of Lincolnton; and a niece, Kay Garrison Poteat. A graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. Michael F. LUCILLE H. DULA
LENOIR — Lucille Horton Dula, 65, of Harper Avenue, NW, died June 6, 2001, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital. Born Dec. 16, 1935, in Caldwell County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Hood and Margaret Ann Horton. A member of Harpertown United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the senior choir, she retired from Archid Gamble Convalescent Home after 10 years of service as a nurse, and was a member of the Nursing Association in Los Angles, Calif. She was preceded in death by her stepfather, Doc Moore; a son, Denny Lee Dula Sr.; a brother, James Eugene Moore; and a sister, Elizabeth Moore Bowers. Survivors include her husband, Agron Dula; a daughter, Beverly Estella Dula of Lenoir; five sisters, Lula Moore Stables, Annie Margaret Moore Harper, Linda Moore Anderson, Joyce Moore Smith and Gwendoyln Moore Dula of Lenoir; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a number of other relatives and friends. The funeral was conducted by the Revs. Miller Carter, Oliver Banks, Isaac Moore Jr., Jeris Parson and Dr. Venoy Pearson Monday at her church. Burial was in Harpertown Community Cemetery.
