GRANITE FALLS - Lula Mae Keller Bumgarner, 93, of Keller Circle, died July 23, 2001, at Caldwell County Hospice. Born Feb. 14, 1908, in Caldwell County, she was a daughter of the late John W. and Mary Watson Keller. A member of Poovey's Grove Baptist Church, she retired from Elliotts Hosiery. She was preceded in death by a son, Paul “Bo” Allen Bumgarner, seven brothers and three sisters. Survivors include her husband of 71 years, W. Earl Bumgarner; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Lynn and Dean Brittain of Granite Falls; a daughter-in-law, Doris C. Bumgarner of Granite Falls; a sister, Gladys K. Foster of Granite Falls; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nephews and nieces. The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. CHARLOTTE - Myrtle Stafford “Brownie” Bowers, 81, of Charlotte, died July 20, 2001, at Presbyterian Hospital. Born May 1, 1920, in Gaston County, she was a daughter of the late James O. and Myrtle Zada Johnston Stafford. A member of East Baptist Church, where she was active in the church choir and the Elaine Moore Sunday school class, she worked with Woolco Department Store for a number of years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore R. “Ted” Bowers. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald T. and Theresa Bowers of Charlotte; a daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and Don Rockett of Conover; two sisters, Obiedean Cox of Stanley and JoNell Guest of Texas; four grandchildren and two grandchildren-in-law, Rhonda and Pete Wojnowski, Liane Bowers, Michele Brown and Kent and Shelley Brown Jr.; and four great-grandchildren, Jaclyn Wojnowski, Michael Wojnowski, Taylor Brown and Tori Brown. Marie Geneva Poston, 101, of Cheraw, S.C., formerly of Hickory, died July 19, 2001, in Cheraw, S.C. Born Feb. 25, 1900, in Cheraw, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Isaac and Lillie Poston Brown. A member of Dee Dee Union Baptist Church, in Cheraw, S.C., she retired as an educator, having taught in Hickory at Ridgeview School for more than 30 years and in Cheraw, S.C. A member of N.A.A.C.P., she was a Den mother of a number of Cub Scout troops and a graduate of Benedict College and Columbia University. She was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister. Survivors include two sisters, Hattie Washington of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Sadie Brown of Cheraw, S.C.; two nephews, Roosevelt Washington and Robert Washington of Pittsburgh, Pa.; four nieces, Lillian Alston, Myrtle Pollard and Sadie Mathews of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Janis Grant of Las Vegas, Nev.; and a number of friends. NEWTON - Janie Franks Cutchin, 81, of Sherrills Ford Road, Statesville, died July 24, 2001, at her residence. Born Sept. 29, 1919, in Walnut Cove, she was a daughter of the late Joseph D. and Jettie Moorefield Franks. A member of Rehobeth United Methodist Church, she was a homemaker and member of Catawba County Medical Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack William Franks and Joseph Daniel Franks Jr. Survivors include her husband, Dr. J. Henry Cutchin Jr.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph H. “Jay” and Janine Basile Cutchin III of Winston-Salem and John F. and Jane Ikerd Cutchin of Denver, N.C.; a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and James M. Born Sept. 25, 1920, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late Cornelius P. “Neal” and Rinnie Belle Hudson Lowman. A member of Royal Chapel Church of God, where she was a member of The Women of the Church of God, she was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Clyde Lowman, Herbert Lowman and an infant; a sister, Sue Bass; and a son-in-law, David Watson. Burley L. Bowman, 90, of Hickory, died July 23, 2001, at Hospice of Catawba Valley after a period of declining health. Born Sept. 22, 1910, in Hickory, he was a son of the late Thomas R. and Bessie Little Bowman. A member of St. Andrews Lutheran Church in Hickory, he retired from Hickory Chair after 50 years of service. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Marie Propes Bowman, and two brothers, Everette M. Bowman and Jacob H. Bowman. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Norman L. and Tonya Burnette Bowman of Hickory; and nine nephews and nieces. The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Julia Mae Woody, 76, of Hickory, died July 23, 2001, at Pellcare Nursing Home in Hickory. Born May 22, 1925, in Marion, she was a daughter of the late Tate M. and Annie Mae Swan Shepherd. Charles “Chuck” Bradberry, 52, of Hickory, died July 23, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Born Nov. 17, 1948, in Marion, he was a son of Elizabeth Hollifield Bradberry of Hickory and the late Watkins Bradberry. A member of First United Protestant Church, he was employed with CommScope and was a graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Debra Ellis Bradberry; two sons, Patrick Bradberry of Charlotte and Jonathan Bradberry of the home; two brothers, Watkins Bradberry Jr. of Claremont and Kenneth Bradberry of Conover; and a sister, Vicki B. Born March 24, 1934, in Catawba County, she was a daughter of the late Laxton and Grace Benfield Hardin. She was formerly employed in the furniture industry. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Dempsey Gantt and Wayne Hardin, and a great-grandchild. Survivors include her husband, Walter “Bud” Hilderbran; a daughter, Toni Travis Setzer of Newton; two stepsons, Randy Hilderbran of Newton and Tony Hilderbrand of Claremont; a sister, Sherlene Sigmon of Claremont; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. The Rev. Cleo Paul Keirn, 91, of Hildebran, died July 23, 2001, at Caldwell County Hospice in Lenoir. Born Oct. 21, 1909, in Parma, Mo., he was a son of the late Fred H. and Mary Eva Lumbar Keirn. A member of First Church of God in Hickory, he retired from the ministry after 70 years, having been a former youth minister and interim pastor of First Church of God in Desoto, Mo. He pastored at Chipawah Church of God in St. Louis, Mo., First Church of God in Kirksville, Mo., Church of God in Cornell, Wis., First Church of God in Alton, Ill., Royal Chapel Church of God in Hickory, Church of God in Tuscaloosa, Ala., First Church of God in Piggott, Ark., and Pinebluff Church of God in Pine Bluff, Ark. He was staff minister at First Church of God in Hickory. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Odell Keirn; a son, Harold E. Born July 13, 1936, in Mitchell County, he was a son of the late Mark Silas and Mary Tapp Davis. Survivors include two brothers, Mack Davis of Bethlehem and Nathan Davis of Conover. YATES W. HAVNAER
CONOVER - Yates Warlick Havnaer, 89, of N.C. 16 North, died July 22, 2001, at the Abernethy Center in Newton. Born Aug. 25, 1911, in Lincoln County, he was a son of the late Charles L. and Lillian Warlick Havnaer. A member of Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ in Conover, he taught Sunday school, was an elder, served on the church consistory and was active in the men's brotherhood. He was a chemistry and physics teacher for 42 years, 31 of which he spent at Newton-Conover High School. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Houston D. Havnaer, Charles E. Havnaer, Lacey Havnaer and Tate Havnaer; two sisters, Eva LeFevers and Mrs. Harold Shuford; and two half sisters, Lois Havnaer and Carnola Havnaer. Survivors include his wife, Elma Hunsucker Havnaer; a son and daughter-in-law, Stephen D. and Carol Havnaer of Salisbury; a daughter and son-in-law, Virginia Ruth and Dr. Ron Wolfe of Richmond, Ky.; a half brother and half sister-in-law, Gilmer and Ruth Havnaer of Hudson; two half sisters, Mrs. Coyte Hunsucker of Conover and Melba Felty of California; and two granddaughters, Ashley Wolfe of Columbia, S.C., and Raegan W. Born Oct. 1, 1927, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Aaron and Ethel Huffman Huffman. He retired from Hickory White Furniture Company and served during the Korean War. He was preceded in death by a son, Paul Michael Huffman. Survivors include his wife, Betty Hardin Huffman; a son, Rick Huffman of Hickory; a daughter and son-in-law, Diane H. and Gene Deal of Clemmons; a stepson, Todd Miller of Mountain Home, Idaho; a stepdaughter, Tracie Tomlinson of Claremont; a brother, Harold Huffman of Hickory; five grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and three stepgrandchildren. LINCOLNTON - Viola Hurley Hager, 92, of North Ingleside Farm Road in Iron Station, died July 24, 2001. Born June 16, 1909, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late M.L. and Cordelia Chapman Hurley. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Franklin Hager; and four brothers and sisters. A member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, he was a U.S. Merchant Marine veteran of World War II and was active in the Morganton Burke Senior Center. Born March 9, 1956, in Elizabethton, Tenn., he was a son of Peggy Pierce Williams of Elizabethton, Tenn., and the late Mark Williams. He retired as a shop foreman from Hickory Sheet Metal Works Inc. TAYLORSVILLE - Thomas Lee Sprinkle, 81, of Hiddenite, died July 26, 2001, at Iredell Memorial Hospital after a two-month period of declining health. Born Dec. 19, 1919, in Alexander County, he was a son of the late Thomas L. and Daisy Lee Gilbert Sprinkle. He attended Fairview Baptist Church and South River United Methodist Church. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a dairy farmer and member of the board of directors of Yadkin Valley Dairy. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10,000 of Hiddenite, the American Legion of Stony Point and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 84 of Taylorsville. He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilmeth Rowena Sharpe Sprinkle; a daughter, Gloria Dean Sprinkle Bothe; seven brothers, Hugh Paul Sprinkle, James Franklin Sprinkle, Russell Lafayette Sprinkle, Robert Gilbert Sprinkle, Charles Edward Sprinkle, Cecil Forrest Sprinkle and Everett Wayne Sprinkle; and three sisters, Ila Mae Fox, Mary Eva Sharpe and Jettie Blanche McLain. CHARLOTTE - Myrtle “Brownie” Stafford Bowers, 81, of Charlotte, died July 10, 2001, at Presbyterian Hospital. Born May 1, 1920, in Gaston County, she was a daughter of the late James O. and Myrtle Zada Johnston Stafford. A member of East Baptist Church, she was active in many different parts of the church including the choir and Sunday school. She worked with Woolco Department Store for a number of years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore R. “Ted” Bowers. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald T. and Theresa Bowers of Charlotte and Vickie and Don Rockett of Conover; two sisters, Obiedean Cox of Stanley and JoNell Guest of Texas; four grandchildren and two grandchildren-in-law, Rhonda and Pete Wojnowski, Liane Bowers, Michele Brown and Kent and Shelley Brown Jr.; and four great-grandchildren, Jaclyn Wojnowski, Michael Wojnowski, Taylor Brown and Tori Brown. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Fred Sigmon; an infant son; an infant daughter; two brothers; and four sisters. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Howard “Jack” and Elizabeth Sigmon of Maiden; two daughters and a son-in-law, Judy S. and Ronald Boston of Claremont and Violet Sims of Newton; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
