J. DAVID MCKEITHAN
WHITEVILLE — James David McKeithan, 57, died Wednesday, April 12 in New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was born in Robeson County, the son of the late Daniel Franklin McKeithan and Kathryn Eleanor Ballantine McKeithan Little. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and served as a deacon. He was a lifetime member of the Whiteville Optimist Club and served as the district Lieutenant Governor. He was employed with CP&L for 34 years. Final rites were conducted Saturday, April 15 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Baptist Church by the Rev. Steve Bailey. Interment was in Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. Peacock handled the arrangements. He is survived by his wife, Linda Smith McKeithan; four daughters: Julia McKeithan of Charlotte, Susan McKeithan Macdonald of Indian Trail, Elizabeth McKeithan of Sumter, S.C., and Karen McKeithan Hooks of Wilmington; two brothers: Daniel Franklin (Jack) McKeithan of Milwaukee, Wis. and Eric McKeithan of Wilmington; three sisters: Ann Davis of Fayetteville, Kay Thornton of Garner, and Josie Carroll of Bladenboro; and one grandson. Serving as pallbearers were: Justin McKeithan, Michael Davis, Jimmy Davis, Danny Thornton, Derris Bradshaw, Brian Cartrette, Edwin Stephens, and Paul McKeithan. Honorary pallbearers were Trinity Baptist Church Deacons, CP&L employees, and members of the Whiteville Optimist Club.

TABOR CITY — Miles Vample, 76, died Thursday, April 13. Final rites will be conducted Tuesday, April 18 at 2 p.m. at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness, Highway 9, Loris, S.C. by Gary Mamrich. Interment will be in the Columbus County Singing Union, Tabor City. Westside Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. He is survived by his wife, Martha Chestnut Vample of Tabor City; four daughters: Jean Vample and Doris Britton of Roosevelt, N.Y., Carolyn Vample of New York and Joyce Vample of Mitcheville, Md.; two sisters: Jessie Marshall of Kansas City, Kan. and Sylvia Gums of Cincinnati, Ohio; one brother: Alvin Vample of Kansas City, Mo. ; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends Monday, April 17 between 7-8 p.m. at the Funeral Home.

CALABASH — Hilda Faye Cartrette Bass, 51, died Friday, April 14 at Grand Strand Regional Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Vester and Amy Jean Cartrette. Final rites were conducted Monday, April 17 at 11 a.m. in the Beaverdam Free Will Baptist Church by the Rev. Jackie Godwin. Interment was in the McPherson Cemetery. Inman Funeral Home handled the arrangements. She is survived by her husband, Billy Ray Bass of Calabash; one son: Kenneth Dale Reaves of Chadbourn; one brother: O’Neal Cartrette of Clarendon; one sister: Jeanette Walton of Whiteville; and two grandchildren.

NETTIE W. WILLIAMSON
EVERGREEN — Nettie W. Williamson, 94, died Saturday, April 15 at her residence. She was a life long resident of the Macedonia Church Community and was preceded in death by a son, J.B. Williamson and a daughter, Nancy Juanita Williamson. Final rites will be conducted Monday, April 17 at 3 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church by the Rev. Vernon Williamson. Interment will be in Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery. Meares Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. She is survived by two daughters: Dorothy Branch amd LaRue Williamson, both of Evergreen; one son: Bobby Floyd of Evergreen; 14 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

CECIL J. COOKE
CARY — Cecil James Cooke, 80, died Friday, April 14 at Rex Health Care, Raleigh. He was born in Richmond County and served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was the son of the late Malcolm Norton Cooke and Mary Etta Adkinson. Graveside services will be conducted Monday, April 17 at 2 p.m. at Lake Waccamaw Cemetery by the Rev. Ray Wickham. A memorial service will be conducted Tuesday, April 18 at 2 p.m. at the Moravian Church, Ridge Rd., Raleigh. McKenzie Mortuary is handling the arrangements. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Ragland Cooke of Cary; one daughter: Kathleen L. Wilson of Willow Springs; two sons: James Byron Cooke of Cary and Andrew Thomas Cooke of Clayton; one sister: Inez C. Southerland of Beaufort; and two grandchildren.

TABOR CITY — Donnie Vereen, 78, died Saturday, April 15 in Loris Hospital. He was the son of the late Flavors Joe Vereen and Florie Lively Vereen. Final rites will be conducted Tuesday, April 18 at 3 p.m. in the Inman Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in the Bayboro Cemetery. Inman Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. He is survived by one son: Kelly Vereen of Tabor City; four daughters: Mary Hardee, Frances Thompkins, and Peggy Suggs, all of Tabor City, and Grace Bradshaw of Whiteville; two sisters: Alene Hardee of Tabor City and Susie Jernigan of Loris, S.C.; 16 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. LAKE WACCAMAW — Effie Catherine Jones, 90, died Friday, April 14 in Columbus County Hospital. She was born in Columbus County, the daughter of the late John F. Stevens and Carrie L. Canady Stevens. She was the widow of Charlie J. Jones Sr. She retired from Whiteville Apparel after 26 years. Final rites will be conducted Monday, April 17 at 2 p.m. at Lake Waccamaw United Methodist Church by the Rev. Tal Madison and the Rev. Ted Manby. Interment will be in Lake Waccamaw Cemetery. Peacock is handling the arrangements. She is survived by two daughters: Doris Sealey and husband W.C. and Lillian Gray Jones, all of Lake Waccamaw; one son: Charlie J. Jones Jr. and wife Velma of Chesapeake, Va.; four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son: J.C. Jones; a daughter: Kathleen Jones; four sisters: Alene B. Baumgardner, Gladys Ward, Ada Smith, and Alma Godwin; two brothers: Purvis Stevens and Leroy Stevens; and a great-granddaughter. JUDY W. HAMMONDS
WHITEVILLE — Judy Diane Ward Hammonds, 48, died Saturday, April 15 at her home. She was born in Columbus County, the daughter of Daniel Norman Ward and Irene Godwin Ward of Whiteville. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and taught 4th grade at Edgewood Elementary School of Whiteville. She graduated from UNCW with a BA degree in elementary education with concentration in biology, and received a masters of elementary education from Pembroke State University. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, an International Honorary Sorority for Women Educators. She received certification in gifted education from St. Andrews Presbyterian College, North Carolina Association of Educators Building Representative and National Educators Association Building Representative. She was also a member of the Parents and Teachers Association and was awarded teacher of the year by Edgewood Elementary School in 1997-1998, was first runner-up for N.C, outstanding young educator, was awarded Whiteville City Schools’ outstanding young educator, received the Governor’s award in Fire Education and was an honorary fire fighter. Final rites will be conducted Tuesday, April 18 at 4 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church by the Reverends Stephen Bailey and Jim Skinner. Entombment will be in Columbus Memorial Park Mausoleum. She is survived by her husband, James Thomas Hammonds; one son: Jay Howard Stanley of Whiteville; one step-son: James Thomas Hammonds Jr. of Millers Creek; one step-daughter: Elizabeth Gray Hammonds of Boone; her parents: Mr. and Mrs. Norman Ward of Whiteville; one brother: Ronnie Daniel Ward of Whiteville; three nieces: Emily Ward Turbeville of Aberdeen, Sara Elizabeth Ward of Whiteville, and Tamara Jane Weston-Burt of Raleigh; and one nephew: Christopher Daniel Ward of Whiteville. Serving as pallbearers will be: Kyle Ramey, Don Harritan, Rob Conway, Milton Frink, Coleman Barbour, and Larry Hewett. TABOR CITY — Doshie Lee Gore, 90, died Thursday, April 13 in Loris Hospital. She was a native of Horry County, the daughter of the late William Wilson and Nancy Elizabeth Johnson Squires. She was the widow of Mack D. Gore. Final rites were Sunday, April 16 at 2 p.m. in Westside Baptist Church by the Reverends Glen Fowler and Elmore Strickland. Interment was in the Myrtle Green Cemetery, Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home handled the arrangements. She is survived by three sons: Norman Gore and Lynwood Gore, both of Knoxville, Tenn. and William Earl Gore of Mineola, Texas; two daughters: Ada Zena Watts of Tabor City and Elizabeth “Libby” Milligan of Knoxville, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

ROOSEVELT V. CARTRET
WHITEVILLE — Roosevelt “R.V.” Cartret, 70 died Saturday, April 15 in Duke Medical Center. He was born in Columbus County, the son of Mrs. Oma Hinson Cartret and the late Seth R. Cartret. He was a teacher of Vocational Agriculture and taught at Nakina High School, Columbus County, for more than 30 years, retiring in 1990. During this time, he served administrative roles including Assistant Principal, one year as Principal, and was involved in vocational education curriculum development projects for the State Department of Public Instruction. Professional memberships included Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association, North Carolina State Employees, North Carolina Association of Educators having served as President of the Columbus County Unit of NCAE. He attended Brevard College for one year and was graduated from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Science in Vocational Agriculture and a Masters degree in Education. He served three years active duty in the U.S. Army and later served in the U.S. Army Reserve. Mr. Cartret was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church where he served in numerous capacities including Sunday School Superintendent, Lay Leader, Chairman of Administrative Board, and a teacher of youth, young adult and senior adult classes. He served as a Lay Speaker throughout the Wilmington District and was honored as Wilmington District Lay Person in 1983. At the North Carolina Conference level, he served on the Stewardship Committee, Council on Ministries, Pastor-Parish Relations, and Delegate to the North Carolina Conference. He was honored for his support of the Methodist Home for Children. Final rites will be conducted Tuesday, April 18 at 11 a.m. at Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines by the Reverends Charles Bullock and Jackie Godwin. Interment will be in Columbus Memorial Park. Peacock is handling the arrangements. He is survived by his wife, Mary Williamson Cartret; two daughters: Renee Cartret Martin and husband Marty of Pawleys Island, S.C. and Rosemary Cartret Sizemore and husband Brad of Wilmington; his mother: Oma Hinson Cartret of Clarendon; three sisters: Beatrice Worley of Whiteville, Carol Davis of High Point, and Edella Atkinson of Lumberton. He was preceded in death by a sister, Edna Lewis. Serving as pallbearers will be: Bob Waddell, Joe Gore, Joe Sellers, Kenneth Waddell, Monroe Enzor, Bill Enzor, Harold Hughes, and Willie Walls. The family will receive friends Monday from 7-8 p.m. at Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines.

SPRING LAKE — Retired Army Sgt. Mose Lewis, 66, died Friday, April 14 at his home. Graveside services with military honors were conducted Monday, April 17 at 10 a.m. in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery by Evangelist Hattie Latham and George Fitzpatrick. Wiseman Mortuary of Fayetteville handled the arrangements. He is survived by his wife, Doris P. Lewis; five children; three sisters; a brother; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mose Lewis Scholarship Fund at any BB&T.

FAIR BLUFF — Cecil V. Hammond, 65, died Saturday, May 6 in Durham Regional Hospital. He was the son of the late Edgar and Ruby Thompson Hammond. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of Korea. Mr. Hammond was preceded in death by two brothers: Bobby Ray Hammond and Roy Hammond. Final rites will be conducted Tuesday, May 9 at 2 p.m. at Meares Funeral Home by the Rev. Tim Moore. LEE J. GREER
WHITEVILLE — Lee Jackson Greer Sr., 89, died Sunday, May 7, 2000 at the ColumbusCounty Hospital. He was the son of the late Lee Greer and Laura Andersen Greer. He was preceded in death by his son Lee J. “Bubba” Greer Jr. He worked with the Red Cross as a Field Director during the war years. Mr. Greer served as District Attorney of the 13th Judicial District until 1982. He attended the University of North Carolina where he earned his law degree. He was a member of the Whiteville United Methodist Church. Final rites will be conducted Tuesday, May 9 at 3 p.m. at the Whiteville United Methodist Church by the Rev. C.B. Owens. Interment will be in the Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary is handling the arrangements. He is survived by his wife, Marguerite Hardee Greer of the home; one daughter: Dr. Laura Greer Vick and husband Gilbert of Durham; three grandchildren: Brian Jackson Vick, Anna Elizabeth Vick, and Stephen Greer Vick. CLARENDON — Elizabeth Ann Conner Perritte, 55, died Saturday, May 6 in Columbus County Hospital. She was the widow of Wayland Perritte and the daughter of the late Matthew “Bud” Connor. Final rites will be conducted Tuesday, May 9 at 3 p.m. at Chadbourn Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Jim Skinner. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Tabor City. Worthington Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. She is survived by one son: Jeff Perritte of Clarendon; one daughter: Lori Perritte Harper of Tabor City; her mother: Ruby Harding Conner of Chadbourn; two brothers: Henry J. Conner and Thomas M. Conner, both of Chadbourn; one sister: Lorraine Conner Sellers of Chadbourn; and five grandchildren. CERRO GORDO — Gary Dean Blackwell, 43, died Saturday, May 6 at Southeastern Regional Medical Center of Lumberton. Final rites will be conducted Monday, May 8 at 3 p.m. at Worthington Funeral Home by the Rev. Charles Dudley. Interment will be in Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home handled the arrangements. He is survived by his mother and step-father: Margaret S. and B.J. EVERGREEN — Juanita Doweless McCall, 86, died Friday, May 5 in Columbus County Hospital. She was the widow of Clyde McCall and the daughter of the late Rufus and Naomi Collins Dowless. Graveside services were conducted Monday, May 8 at 11 a.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Wilmington by the Rev. Tommy Fields. Worthington Funeral Home handled the arrangements. She is survived by one daughter: Eleanor M. Kinlaw of Evergreen; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

WHITEVILLE -- Bossie Jeremiah "B.J." Pickett, 55, died Thursday, June 1 at his residence. Final rites were conducted Tuesday, June 6 at Zion Plain Baptist Church of Nakina by the Rev. James Smith.
