Final rites will be conducted Saturday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. at Peoples Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in Marsh Branch Cemetery in Orrum. Peoples Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. CERRO GORDO – Hattie Marie Stackhouse, 41, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004 at Columbus County Hospital. She was the daughter of Elroy and Hattie Leggette of Fair Bluff. Final rites were conducted Wednesday, Feb. 4 at Olive Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Fair Bluff, by the Rev. Nathaniel Scott. Interment was in the Mt. Tabor Cemetery of Cerro Gordo. Westside Funeral Home handled the arrangements. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Russell W. Stackhouse; two sons: Russelle Dawayne Stackhouse and Travis Liatray Stackhouse, both of the home; two sisters: Betty Brice of Marion, S.C. and Wanda Betts of Fair Bluff; three brothers: Terry Leggett, Clayton Leggett and Roy Lynn, all of Fair Bluff; and a special child: Santana Ray of Whiteville.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Whiteville where she was active in the Sunshine Group. She was involved with the White Marsh Wildlife Action Group. A memorial service will be conducted Friday, Feb. 6 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Whiteville by the Reverends Kendell L. Cameron Jr. and the Rev. Kerry Peeler. LUMBERTON – James Harley Jacobs, 86, died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004 at Southeastern Regional Medical Center. He was born in Columbus County on Jan. 2, 1918, the son of the late Duncan and Ida Spaulding Jacobs. He was a chef, served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was a member of the American Legion Post in Whiteville. Funeral services will be private. He is survived by a son: J.W. Jacobs of Lumberton; two sisters: Isadora Lambright of Columbia, S.C. and Etta Bracey of Lake Waccamaw; two brothers: Woodrow Jacobs of Clarkton and Elbert Jacobs of New York; and one grandchild.

TABOR CITY – Bernice Duncan Soles, 75, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004 in Columbus County Hospital. A native of Gaston County, she was the daughter of the late Boyd Cleveland Duncan and Annie Mae Hardin Duncan and the widow of Lewis Soles. FAYETTEVILLE – Dr. Raymond R. Renfrow, 91, formerly of Fair Bluff, died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004 at Cornelia Nixon Davis Health Care Center of Porters Neck. He was the first practicing orthodontist in the Fayetteville area. He was born in Fair Bluff in 1912 and served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Final rites were conducted Thursday, Feb. 5 at Jernigan-Warren Chapel by the Rev. Leighton McKeithan. Interment will be in the Powell Family Cemetery, Fair Bluff on Thursday at 3 p.m. Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home of Fayetteville is handling the arrangements. She was a lifetime member of Palmyra Baptist Church, a member of the Old Dock Cypress Creek Fire Department Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary. Final rites will be conducted Friday, Feb. 6 at 2 p.m. at Palmyra Baptist Church. Interment will be in Peacock’s Columbus Memorial Park. Peacock Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Eugene Foster Sears, 90, of Whiteville, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at his home with his loving daughter, Margaret and her family at his side. He was a veteran of WWII and the Korean War. Mr. Sears was the owner of Sears-Smith Insurance Company and was a life-long member of the Civitan Club. He served on the board of directors of Southern National Bank and the Carolyn T. High Memorial Library and was a past Whiteville City Councilman. He was preceded in death by his wife, Leota Hutchinson Sears in 1991. He is survived by two daughters: Margaret S. Stewart and husband J.E. Stewart of Whiteville and Mary S. Oliver of Savannah, Ga.; a son: Patrick H. Sears III of New York City, N.Y.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted Friday, April 2 at 11 a.m. at Whiteville United Methodist Church by the Rev. C.B. Owens. She was born in Wayne County, the daughter of the late Cova Bagwell Howell and Moody Howell and was a member of South Main Street Baptist Chapel. She was a hairdresser for 25 years and was co-owner of Area Transportation Company. Final rites were conducted Wednesday, March 31 in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home by the Rev. Gary Vassar. Entombment was in Pine Forest Memorial Gardens. Bright Funeral Home of Wake Forest handled the arrangements. She is survived by her husband of 31 years, Mack “Lloyd” Barnhill Sr.; four daughters: Kim Crawford and husband Joe of Raleigh, Rita Richardson of Charlotte, Carolyn R. Simmons and Sharon K. Hadley, both of Jacksonville; three sons: Mack L. Barnhill Jr. and wife Carol of Raleigh, Jeffery D. Barnhill of Jacksonville and Gary J. Barnhill and wife Lisa of Lillington; a sister: Mildred Williams of Wilson; three brothers: George Howell of Fletcher, Ken Howell and Dub Howell, both of Princeton; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister: Margaret Melton. Memorial contributions may be made to South Main Street Baptist Chapel, 555 S. Main Street, Wake Forest, N.C. 27587.

WHITEVILLE – Linda Williamson Floyd, 56, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at Columbus County Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Dennis Earl Williamson and Louise Bullard Williamson. She was associated with Etna Convenience Store for 30 years. She was a member of the Whiteville Church of God. Final rites will be conducted Friday, April 2 at 11 a.m. at the Whiteville Church of God by the Rev. Allen Strickland. Entombment will be in the Columbus Memorial Park Mausoleum. McKenzie Mortuary is handling the arrangements. She is survived by two daughters: Tammy Lynn Floyd and Lisa Floyd Strickland, both of Whiteville; a son: Steve Alan Floyd of Whiteville; a brother: Mitchell Williamson of Whiteville; and six grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Diabetes Association. Pallbearers will be Whit Williamson, Bobby Williamson, Billy Floyd Jr., Brian Wible, Billy John Russ, Chris Caines, Ervin Pope and Murdock Smith. Visitation will be Thursday from 7-8:30 p.m. at McKenzie Mortuary.
