WHITEVILLE -- Joseph Edward Kelly, 81, died Friday, June 2 at Columbus County Hospital. Final rites were conducted Wednesday, June 7 at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Isaac B. Horton. Interment was in the Campground Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home handled the arrangements. He is survived by his wife, Bertha F. Kelly; four daughters: Barbara Jane Kelly and Margie Ree Kelly, both of Whiteville, and Diane K. Cokley of Baltimore, Md., and Betty Almond of Cleveland, Ohio.

CHADBOURN -- Donna Lynn Turner Peal, 36, died Sunday, June 4. Final rites were conducted Wednesday, June 7 at 3 p.m. at Cherry Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Elmore Strickland and the Rev. DeWayne Dickerson. Interment was in the church cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home handled the arrangements. She is survived by her mother and step-father: Linda and Richard Williamson of Cerro Gordo; her father: Winfred Turner of Marion, S.C.; two brothers: Nathan Odom Williamson and Sean Paul Williamson, both of Cerro Gordo; one sister: Cynthia Allgood of Whiteville; her maternal grandmother: Minnie Jackson of Nichols, S.C. Serving as pallbearers were: Ronnie Pridgen, Johnny Pridgen, Ricky Allen, Tommy Reeves, Tim Andrews, and Darryl Hooks.

KENNETH MOORE
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Kenneth Moore, 68, formerly of Whiteville, died Tuesday, May 30. He was a veteran. Final rites were conducted Wednesday, June 7 at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Isaac B. Horton. Interment will be in the Millican Cemetery of Whiteville. Peoples Funeral Home handled the arrangements. He is survived by one son: Kenneth Deryal Moore of McLean, Va.; and one daughter: Vanessa Lynn Moore of Bladensburg, Md.

BLADENBORO -- Irene Benton, 78, died Sunday, June 4 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Final rites were conducted Wednesday, June 7 at 3 p.m. at New Light Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church by the Rev. Ronnie Cox. Interment was in Lewis Cemetery. Lewis Funeral Home handled the arrangements. She is survived by one son: Tony Benton of Bladenboro; two daughters: Annis Dove of Charlotte and Jane Freeman of Wilmington; three brothers: Garland Bowen, Clifton Bowen, and Marion Bowen, all of Bladenboro; two sisters: Addie Lee Callihan of Clarkton and Louise Thompson of Bladenboro; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

LAKE WACCAMAW -- David Allan Martin, 40 of 401 Flemington Dr. died recently at the Veterans Hospital Center of Fayetteville. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, June 13 at 2 p.m. at the Veterans Hospital Chapel, Fayetteville. Cape Fear Crematory of Fayetteville is handling the arrangements. He is survived by his father: David O. Martin of the home; one brother: James D. Martin of Lake Waccamaw; one sister: Shirley A. Martin of Shallotte; one sister-in-law: Barbara B. Martin of Lake Waccamaw; two nephews: Jason Martin of Lake Waccamaw and Allen Martin of Shallotte; one niece: Jennifer Martin of Lake Waccamaw; and one great-nephew: Justin O. Martin of Lake Waccamaw. He was preceded in death by his mother: Doris Martin. She is survived by seven daughters: Deloris Greene of Tampa, Fla., Carrie Graham of Clarkton, Essie Stone of Chevly, Md., Eva Smith and Bettye Blanks, both of Wilmington, Nellie Smith of Washington, D.C., and Barbara Piggott of Whiteville; three sons: James Smith of Virginia Beach, Va., Nathaniel Smith of Wilmington, and Tommy James Jefferson of Whiteville; three sisters: Velma McDuffie of Lumberton, Alice Best of Philadelphia, Pa., and Rosa Lee Nance of Upper Marlboro, Md.; and one brother: Albert Floyd of Evergreen. Final rites will be conducted Thursday, June 8 at 2 p.m. at Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church of Fayetteville by the Reverends Levie Bryant and John Guyton. Interment will be in Garland City Cemetery. Lewis Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. She is survived by four sons: Ernest Sessoms of Newport News, Va., Charles Sessoms of Charlotte, Woodrow Sessoms of Darien, Ga., and Henry Sessoms of Bladenboro; three daughters: Hattie Ruth Duke of Jackson, Mich., Betty Lois Davis of Elizabethtown, and Dorothy Coleman of Lillington; one brother: Wilson Bordeaux of Bladenboro; two sisters: Sudie Russ of Dublin and Hazel Adams of Elizabethtown; 22 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

CECIL R. POPE
LUMBERTON -- Cecil Robert Pope, 73, died Wednesday, June 7 at Southeastern Regional Medical Center. He was born in Marlboro County, S.C., a son of the late John R. and Ethel Colie Pope. He worked for 37 years with the N.C. Department of Transportation. Final rites will be conducted Friday, June 9 at 11 a.m. at Floyd Memorial Chapel of Lumberton by the Reverends Dean Carter and Joe P. Williams. Interment will be in Fairmont Cemetery. Floyd Mortuary is handling the arrangements. He is survived by his wife, Mary of the home; one son: Kenneth R. Pope Sr. of Cerro Gordo; one daughter: Wanda Kay Cook of Lumberton; one brother: John R. Pope of Lumberton; two sisters: Elizabeth Schofield of Bennettsville, S.C. and Kathleen Turner of Lumberton; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. NICHOLS, S.C. -- Guy Coleman, 79, died Tuesday, June 6 at Marion County Medical Center. He was an U.S. Army Veteran and a retired farmer. Final rites will be conducted Friday, June 9 at 11 a.m. at Spring Branch Baptist Church by the Reverends John Elvington and Bill Jacobs. Interment will be in Hammond Cemetery. He was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church, member of VFW Post #8496 of Bladenboro, and a Vietnam Army Veteran. Final rites will be conducted Friday, June 9 at 2 p.m. at Hickory Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. James T. Brooks. Interment will be in Hickory Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. GARLAND E. WEAVER
WHITEVILLE -- Garland Elmer Weaver, 92, died Wednesday, June 7 at Shoreland Health Care and Retirement Center. He was born January 20, 1908 in Harrisonburg, Va. He was a member of Whiteville United Methodist Church, Lebanon Masonic Lodge #207, Columbus County Shrine Club and Whiteville Chapter 211 Order of Eastern Star. He was the long time owner and operator of Weaver’s Jewelery in downtown Whiteville. Final rites will be conducted Saturday, June 10 at 10 a.m. at Whiteville United Methodist Church by the Rev. C.B. Owens. Interment will be in Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary is handling the arrangements. He is survived by two sons: Gary and wife Lynette of Silver Spring, Md.; Phillip and wife Beverly of Benton, La.; one grandson: Philip Weaver Jr. of Dallas, Texas; one granddaughter: Pamela Lundin of Atlanta, Ga.; one great-grandson: Griffin Lundin of Atlanta, Ga.; and one sister: Charlotte Neff of Harrisonburg, Va. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday at McKenzie Mortuary.

GRAHAM H. ANDERSON
HARRISBURG, PA. -- Graham Henry Anderson, 60, formerly of Whiteville, died in Harrisburg, Pa. A memorial service will be conducted Friday, June 9 at 1 p.m. at First St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, Whiteville, by the Rev. Thomas Register. Peoples Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. He is survived by one son: Corey Anderson of Harrisburg, Pa.; two daughters: Tonya Strowbridge of London, England, and Keisha Bass of Columbia, S.C.; one sister: Mamie Henry of Whiteville; and three grandchildren.

ARTHUR MCPHERSON
CHADBOURN -- Arthur McPherson, 88, died Friday, Aug. 11. He was born in January 22, 1912 in Columbus County, the son of the late Duffy and Cornelia Simmons McPherson. He was preceded in death by his only sister: Ethel; and all of his brothers: Ernest, Avery, Roy, Shelton, and John. He was a farmer in the Beaverdam Community and an active member of Beaverdam Original Free Will Baptist Church. "Ot," as he was known to family and friends, served as Sunday School Superintendent for several years. He was an active deacon for many years and was recently recognized as an Honorary Deacon of the church. Final rites were conducted Sunday, Aug. 13 at 3 p.m. in the Beaverdam Original Free Will Baptist Church by the Rev. Jackie Godwin. Interment was in the McPherson Cemetery, Chadbourn. Inman Funeral Home handled the arrangements. He is survived by his beloved wife, Letha Hinson McPherson; two daughters: Dorothy Cribb, Agnes McPherson and husband Alfred, all of Chadbourn; two sons: Raeford McPherson and wife Mildred, and David L. McPherson and wife Ida, all of Chadbourn. Pallbearers were: Danny McPherson, Harold Dean Cribb, Wade Allen McPherson, Freddie McPherson, Arthur David McPherson, and Buddy McPherson. Deacons of the church served as Honoraries.

CLARENDON -- Ruby Lee Leonard, 61, of the Mollie Community, died Saturday, Aug. 12 in Loris. Final rites will be conducted Monday, Aug. 14 at 2 p.m. in the Inman Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in the John Norris Cemetery. Inman Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. She is survived by two brothers: Henry and Rudolph Leonard, both of Shallotte; four sisters: Annie Mae Hardy of Clarendon, Annie Ruth Gause of Whiteville, Betty Ward of Holden Beach, and Elma Benton of Thomasville; two nephews: Isaac and David Hardy, both of Clarendon; and three nieces: Cindy Hodge and Karen Hardy, both of Clarendon, and Hazel Jackson of Hallsboro.

TABOR CITY -- Harry Lee Martin, 68, died Wednesday, Aug. 9 at his residence. Final rites will be conducted Tuesday, Aug. 15 at 2 p.m. in the Inman Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in the Cedar Creek Cemetery, Nichols, S.C. Inman Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. He is survived by his wife, Carol Martin of the home; three sons: Harry James Martin, Bruce Martin, and David Martin, all of San Jose, Calif.; one daughter: Susan Martin of Tabor City; one sister: Mary Cribb of Tabor City; and one grandchild. CARROLL W. INMAN
WHITEVILLE -- Carroll Wayne Inman, 38, died Thursday, Aug. 10. He was born in Columbus County, the son of Lona Pigott Inman of Whiteville and the late Nester Inman. He was a foreman at Flowline Corporation. He graduated from Whiteville High School in 1979. Final rites were conducted Sunday, Aug. 13 at 2 p.m. at Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines by the Reverends Bervin Ferguson and David Watts. Interment was in Columbus Memorial Park. Peacock handled the arrangements. He is survived by his wife, Tracy Hardee Inman of the home; one son: Hunter Wayne Inman of the home; one daughter: Brandi Nicole Inman of the home; his mother: Lona Inman; three brothers: Steve Inman, Teddy Ray Inman, and Jeff Inman, all of Whiteville; and one sister: Wanda Inman Kennedy of Evergreen. Serving as pallbearers were: Jeff Stanley, Jimmy Stevens, Thomas Inman, Terry Ward, Allen Anderson, and Gary Vereen.

CHADBOURN -- James Douglas Connor, 52, died Thursday, Aug. 10 at the VAMedical Center in Durham. He was born in Robeson County, the son of Mrs. Geraline Benton Connor of Fair Bluff and the late James Oscar Connor. He retired from the U.S. Navy after having served during Vietnam. He attended Garner-Webb University. He was a member and deacon of Chadbourn Baptist Church. A memorial service was conducted Sunday, Aug. 13 at 4 p.m. at Chadbourn Baptist Church by the Rev. Rob Norman. Peacock handled the arrangements. He is survived by his wife, Debra Nobles Connor; one son: Jay Connor of Wilmington; his mother: Geraline B. GARLAND -- Clifford Wayne Robinson, 51, died Friday, Aug. 11 in Wayne Memorial Hospital. Final rites were conducted Sunday, Aug. 13 at 3 p.m. in Garland Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church by the Rev. Dewey Ball. Interment was in the Carter Cemetery. Carter Funeral Home of Garland handled the arrangements. He is survived by one son: Kevin Robinson of Garland; his parents: Wayne and Retha Mae Rich Robinson of Garland; one sister: Teresa Stamps of Rockville, Md.; and one brother: Dale Robinson of Garland.

EVERGREEN -- Dorothy Nobles Nance, 76, died Thursday, Aug. 10 in Salisbury at the Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks. Final rites were conducted Saturday, Aug. 12 at 11 a.m. at Worthington Funeral Home with the Rev. Vernon Williamson and the Rev. Jack Harrison. Interment was in the Nance Family Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home handled the arrangements. She is survived by three sons: Emerson Nance of Salisbury, Ronald Nance of Wilmington and Arnold Nance of Evergreen; two daughters: Sue Deal of Millers Creek and Tina Beck of Evergreen; one brother: Paul Nobles of Clarendon; five sisters: Helen Nance of Darlington, S.C., Mary Alice Van Hoy and Martha Fowler, both of Marion, Va., Betty Lain of Newport News, Va., and Mable Kellihan of Virginia Beach, Va.; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. ANGELLE JERNIGAN
RICHMOND VA. - Angelle Jernigan of Richmond, Va. formerly of Fairmont, died Tuesday, Sept. 12. She was a former teacher of Orrum School. A memorial service was held Sunday, Sept. 24 at 2 p.m. at Baltimore Baptist Church in Fairmont. Dr. Tomas Rich and Rev. Grady McKeithan was in charge of the service. Surviving are her husband, T.L. Jernigan of Richmond; a son Ronnie Jernigan of Long Beach; a daughter, Terri Sheehan of Midlothian, Va.; a brother, Henry Gaston Williamson of Cerro Gordo; and two grandchildren.
