JOSEPHINE S. RABON
CHADBOURN -- Josephine Shepherd Rabon, 90, formerly of the Oak Dale Community of Columbus County, died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000. She was the daughter of the late Terrah and Sarah Elizabeth Kissam Shepherd and the widow of Chalmers Rabon. Final rites will be conducted Friday, Dec. 1 at 3 p.m. at Lennon’s Crossroads Baptist Church by the Rev. D.T. Griffin. Interment will be in Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. She is survived by four daughters: Hilda Newman and husband Everette of Wilmington, Brenda Brand and husband Jim of Butner, Mary Elizabeth Mayes and husband Jerald of Whiteville, and Billie Ann Lane and husband Colon Jr. of Hope Mills; one sister: Kathleen Barnes of Sanford; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Thursday from 7-9 p.m. at Worthington Funeral Home, Chadbourn. Pallbearers will be grandsons: Everette Newman II, Ronnie Newman, Rabon Mayes, Craig Mayes, Jason Brand, and Stephen Brand.

DEBORAH F. SLATER
WILMINGTON -- Deborah Faye Slater, 63, died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000 in New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She was born in Columbus County, the daughter of the late James Henry and Alene Hewitt Batchelor. Graveside services were conducted Wednesday, Nov. 29 at 11 a.m. at Whiteville Memorial Cemetery by the Rev. Dr. Tommy Bryson Jr. Peacocks handled the arrangements. She is survived by her husband, John William Slater; four sons: Larry Slater of Whiteville, John Slater of Wilmington, Craig Slater of Winnabow, Chris Slater of Leland; one daughter: Jean Smith of Maco; her mother: Blanche Cartrette; seven sisters: Jean Williams of Tabor City, Ann Reaves of Nakina, Dianne Ballard of Whiteville, Judy Hammonds of Clarendon, Shirley Nobles of Chadbourn, Helen Sasser of Hallsboro, and Sue Bullard of Whiteville; two brothers: James Batchelor Jr. of Chadbourn, and J.D. Batchelor of Whiteville; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Serving as pallbearers were: Timmy Slater, Michael Slater, Greg Slater, Toby Pridgen, Tracy Pridgen, Jamey Pridgen, and Richard Herzig.

NANCY J. CHAVIS
WHITEVILLE -- Nancy Jane Chavis, 50, died Monday, Nov. 27, 2000 at Columbus County Hospital. She was born in Clio, S.C., the daughter of the late Sam and Ada Jane Locklear Chavis. She was a homemaker. Final rites will be conducted Friday, Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. at Dogwood Baptist Church, Rowland, by the Reverends Johnnie Chavis and James Hunt. Interment will be in the Hickory Grove Cemetery, Clio, S.C. Floyd Mortuary and Crematory of Lumberton is handling the arrangements. She is survived by one son: Buck Jr. Chavis of Rowland; two brothers: James Chavis of Fairmont and Willie West Chavis of Rowland; two sisters: Mary E. Tadlock of Rowland and Mary Elizabeth Holmes of Laurinburg; and two grandchildren.

GRADY CRIBB
LORIS, S.C. -- Grady Cribb, 64, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000 in Loris Hospital. He was a native of Columbus County and the son of the late William Warren Cribb and Bertha Ida Cribb. Final rites will be conducted Friday, Dec. 1 at 3 p.m. in the Emerson Free Will Baptist Church by the Rev. Hollon Norris. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Cribb of the home; one daughter: Patty Wade of Loris, S.C.; one brother: Harry Cribb of Loris; six sisters: Geneva Miller and Ellen Richardson, both of Conway, S.C., Velma Barnhill of High Point, Virginia Tyler of Bolivia, Elnita Pridgen of Loris, S.C., and Margaret Rogers of Aynor, S.C.; and two grandsons. Visitation will be Thursday night from 7-9 p.m. at Inman Funeral Home.

DR. ROBERT L. YOUNG JR.
LUMBERTON -- Robert Lassiter Young Jr., M.D. died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000 at his home. A native of Charlotte, he was educated at Duke University where he received his undergraduate and graduate degrees. In 1966 he joined the staff at Lumberton Children’s Clinic and Southeastern Medical Center where he had served as Chief of Medicine and Chief of Pediatrics. On Nov. 22, he received the Commonwealth Fund Award for his commitment to children and innovation in primary care. Tireless in his efforts for all children, he spearheaded many programs. He was responsible for bringing numerous multi-specialty clinics to the Lumberton Children’s Clinic. These clinics afford local children access to specialized services provided by physicians from Duke and Chapel Hill. A service of celebration was conducted Monday, Nov. 27 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Lumberton. He is survived by two daughters: Sally of Charlotte and Betsy of North Little Rock, Ark.; and one son: David of Chapel Hill. He was preceded in death by his parents: Kathryn Hutcherson Young and Robert Lassiter Young. In lieu of flowers, Dr. Young requested that memorials be made to the North Carolina Pediatric Society Foundation or to a charity of choice.

CHADBOURN -- Mary Frances Nobles Connor, 56, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000 at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Harvey Nobles. Final rites will be conducted Saturday, Dec. 2 at 2 p.m. at Welcome Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Dwarka Ramphal. Interment will be in the China Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. She is survived by her mother: Estelle Shaw Nobles of the home; and one sister: Doris L. Nobles of Chadbourn. Visitation will be Friday from 7-9 p.m. at Worthington Funeral Home, Chadbourn.

WHITEVILLE -- Ellewees Register Pittman, 55, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000 at her residence. Graveside services will be conducted Friday, Dec. 1 at 11 a.m. at the Register Family Cemetery by the Rev. She is survived by one daughter: Denane Turbeville Williams of Elizabethtown; one brother: Billy Register of Whiteville; and one grandchild. WHITEVILLE -- Homer Scrap Simmons died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000 at Columbus County Hospital. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by McKenzie Mortuary.

GRACE S. GOODE
GASTONIA -- Grace Marie Singletary Goode died Monday, Nov. 20, 2000 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. She was a native of Clarkton, the daughter of the late Walter and Georgia Augusta Faircloth Singletary and the widow of Jack Goode. She was preceded in death by a son, and brothers W. P. and Horace Singletary. Final rites were conducted at New Hope Baptist Church, Gastonia, with interment in the Salem Cemetery. She is survived by a daughter-in-law: Flora Goode of Gastonia; two grandchildren: David C. Goode of Calif. and Tiffany G. Hobbs of Charlotte; one great-grandchild: Jackson Hobbs; and two sisters: Christine Singletary Potter of Riegelwood and Ann Singletary Jenrette of Elizabethtown. Memorials may be made to the New Hope Baptist Church, 2024 Redbug Drive, Gastonia, N.C. 28056.
