Final rites will be conducted Monday, Feb. 19 at 1 p.m. at New Light Missionary Baptist Church, Hallsboro, by the Rev. Earl Godfrey. Interment will be in the Chestnut Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. He is survived by his wife, Fannie K. Chestnut; two daughters: Margaret Chestnut-Wimbush and Shirley Abrams, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; and one son: the Rev. Thurman L. Chestnut of Whiteville.

CERRO GORDO -- Ruthie Mae Strickland Williams, 77, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001 at Britthaven of Northchase, Wilmington. She was a native of Columbus County and had worked as a cook for Columbus County Schools until her retirement. She was preceded in death by her husband Harlee Williams. Final rites were conducted Saturday, Feb. 17 at Meares Funeral Home by the Rev. Tim Moore. Interment was in Edwards Cemetery. Meares Funeral Home handled the arrangements. She is survived by three sons: Harvey Williams of Wilmington, Johnnie Williams of Raleigh, and Terry Williams of Cerro Gordo; one daughter: Judy L. Williams of Jacksonville; two sisters: Geneva Hammonds of Fair Bluff and Ina Hayes of Lake Waccamaw; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

WHITEVILLE -- Mary Frances "Frank" Edwards, 66, died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001 in Duke Medical Center. She was born in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Emmett and Ruth Price Brown. She was formerly employed with Columbus County Hospital and was a member of Grace Baptist Church. Final rites were conducted Sunday, Feb. 18 at Peacock’s Chapel in the Pines by the Rev. Jim Bartlett. Interment was in the Owens Cemetery. Peacock Funeral Home handled the arrangements. She is survived by her husband, Jack Edwards; one son: Ronald Edwards of Whiteville; four daughters: Judy Meadows of Bladenboro, Becki McDonald and Emette Tedder, both of Whiteville, and Sandra Priest of Clarkton; two sisters: Inez Ikner and Betty Babson of Bladenboro; and nine grandchildren. Serving as pallbearers were: Doug Edwards, Bryan Edwards, J.D. Meadows, Byron Tedder, Coy Naile, and Scotty Thompson.

He was the husband of the late Pauline Lee Williamson and the son of the late James Frank and Louetta Martin Williamson. He was a retired farmer in the Williamson’s Crossroads Community. Final rites will be conducted Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church by the Reverends Vernon Williamson and J.P. Williams. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. He is survived by one daughter: Staretta W. Cartrette of Lexington; three sons: Tommy Williamson, Charles Wayne Williamson, and Harry Franklin Williamson, all of Chadbourn; one sister: Penny W. ASH -- Leavy Everett "Scott" Simmons, 84, died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001 at Brunswick Community Hospital. Mr. Simmons was born April 25, 1916 in Brunswick County, the son of the late Marion and Bessie Simmons. He was a retired manager with the U.S. Postal Service in Rocky Mount and was an U.S. Army Veteran, having served during WWII. He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret White Simmons, a daughter June Cottle, and a grandson Ronnie Evans. Final rites were conducted Sunday, Feb. 18 in New Britton Baptist Church by the Reverends Sterling Sarvis and Eugene Evans. Interment was in the church cemetery. Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Service of Supply handled the arrangements. He is survived by two sons: Michael Simmons and wife Terenthia of Ash, Terry Simmons and wife Connie of Var-namtown; one daughter: Marian McCumbee and hus-band Dewayne of Ash; six grandchildren: Jordan McCumbee, Joshua and Matthew Simmons, Shannon Brown, Tracey Tyndell, and Danielle Johnson; and a great-granddaughter: Stacey Johnson.

WHITEVILLE -- Iris F. Richards, 79, formerly of Cochise, Ariz., died Monday, Feb. 12, 2001 in Columbus County Hospital. She was born in Fayette County, W. Va., the daughter of the late Louis and Ruth Brown Quinn. She is survived by two daughters: Dawn Tedder and Sharon Roop, both of Whiteville; two sons: Michael Girimont of Pinehurst and John Girimont of Cochise, Ariz.; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Spaulding and the daughter of the late Samuel L. and Elease Graham Mitchell. Final rites were conducted Sunday, Feb. 18 at St. James Baptist Church by the Reverends Graylen Mitchell and Ronald Campbell. Interment was in St. James Cemetery. He retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation in 1987 after 33 years. Final rites were conducted Sunday, April 1 at Clarkton First Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Mike Thompson. Interment was in Clarkton City Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Burney Bridgers; three sons: Dr. Stephen Bridgers and Jeff Bridgers, both of Elizabethtown, and Wayne Bridgers of Concord; one sister: Agnes Robbins of Elizabethtown; and seven grandchildren.
