WHITEVILLE – Aaron Lloyd Watkins, 70, died Sunday, May 25, 2003 at Columbus County Hospital. He was the son of the late Oscar Watkins and Winnie Fisher. He was a member of Mishop Springs United Methodist Church. Final rites were conducted Wednesday, May 28 at McKenzie Mortuary Chapel by the Rev. Robert Rattz. Interment was in Union Valley Cemetery. LORIS, S.C. – Helen Marie McKeithan Plessinger, 66, of the Red Bluff community, died Monday, Sept. 29, 2003 at Loris Community Hospital following an illness. Born May 25, 1937 in Whiteville, she was the daughter of the late Wilson Timothy McKeithan and the late Lydia Harding McKeithan. She was a retired pipe welder in the ship building industry and was of the Baptist faith. Final rites will be conducted Thursday, Oct. 2 at 2 p.m. at Hardwick Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Danny Chamblee. Interment will be in Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. Hardwick Funeral Home of Loris, S.C. is handling the arrangements. LONGS, S.C. – Margaret Susan Gore Carter, 79, of the Mt. Leon community of Horry County, S.C., died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003 at McLeod Regional Medical Center of Florence, S.C. She was born Dec. 14, 1923 in Nakina, a daughter of the late William Miller Gore and the late Exxie Dora Housand Gore. She was a member of Mt. Leon Baptist Church where she assisted with playing the organ and piano, sang in the choir and taught Sunday School. She was very active in many other activities in her church such as assisting with plays and programs. She was preceded in death by her first husband, W.O. Carter, her second husband, Clyde Carter; three brothers: Homer Gore, Ralph Gore and Ernest Gore; and a sister: Elnita Hughes. Final rites were conducted Wednesday, Oct. 1 at Mt. Leon Baptist Church by the Reverends Mark Stevens and Lonnie Johnson. Interment was in Mt. Leon Cemetery. Ward Funeral Home of Loris, S.C. handled the arrangements. WHITEVILLE – Irma Faye Best, 62, died Monday, Sept. 29, 2003. She was born Sept. 9, 1941, the daughter of Mary Mildred Best Ezzell and the late Rossie Edgar Ezzell. She was formerly employed with Quality Cleaners. Final rites were conducted Wednesday, Oct. 1 at Cypress Creek Freewill Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Tommy Bryson. Interment was in the Hosea Simmons Cemetery. Peacock Funeral Home handled the arrangements. She is survived by three sons: Allen Gerald Best of Aiken, S.C., Michael C. Best of Whiteville and Kevin Wilson Best of Tabor City; two daughters: Susan Best of W. Columbia, S.C. and Teresa Cartrette of Whiteville; her mother: Mary Mildred Ezzell; two brothers: Freddie Ezzell of Wilmington and Glen Ezzell of Whiteville; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. DR. LADD W. HAMRICK JR.

CONCORD – Dr. Ladd Watts Hamrick Jr., 80, died Sept. 23, 2003. He graduated valedictorian from Kings Mountain High School in 1940 and graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Wake Forest College in 1944 and from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest College in 1946. A captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in 1948 and 1949 and assistant Chief of Medical Corps in Manila, P. I. He practiced internal medicine and was Director of Nuclear Medicine at Northeast Medical Center until his retirement in 1994. In 1997 Northeast Medical Center dedicated an auditorium, designed for the pursuit of community health education, as the Hamrick Theatre. A memorial service will be conducted Thursday, Oct. 2 at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Concord. Wilkinson Funeral Home of Concord is handing the arrangements. He is survived by his wife, Sarah Garrett Hamrick of the home; his children: L. Watts Hamrick III, Meredith Hamrick Bell; and seven grandchildren; and a brother: Harvey Bly Hamrick. He was preceded in death by two daughters: Carolyn Hamrick and Rebecca Hamrick.

Entombment will be at Owens Family Cemetery in Whiteville. She is survived by her husband, Billy Ray Owens of the home; a son: William Anthony Owens of Lumberton; three daughters: Rose Marie Green of Monroe, Billie Faye Haywood and Teresa Renee Jackson, both of Lumberton; her mother: Ruth Fields of Lumberton; four brothers: Billy Powell and Tommy Powell, both of Lumberton, Walter Speight of Florida and Horace Powell of Charlotte; two sisters: Katie Martin of Lumberton and Carolyn Walters of Aberdeen; and eight grandchildren.

RICHMOND, VA. – Whiteville native Lucy Annie Richardson Leggett, 67, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, teacher and friend, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003. She is survived by her devoted and loving husband of 46 years, W. Preston Leggett of Richmond, Va.; four children: Bob Leggett of Riverside, Calif., Richard Leggett and his wife Angela of Roanoke, Va., Elaine Leggett Esposito and her husband Mike of Ashland, Va. and Charles Leggett of Killeen, Texas; nine grandchildren: Robert, Grace and Cheri Leggett, Bert, Britteny Howerton and Ellen Esposito; two brothers: Maurice Richardson and wife Nancy of Morehead City and Billy Wayne Richardson and his wife April of Ft. Myers, Fla.; two sisters-in-law: Betty Jo Richardson of Rock Hill, S.C. and Cecile Richardson of Fayetteville; a cherished cousin: Shirley Martin of Loris, S.C.; nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts and adopted children beyond count. Mrs. Leggett was a member of Bon Air Baptist Church and was a retired math teacher at Clover Hill High School. CRUSOE ISLAND -- Joseph D. “Do Do” Clewis, 73, of Crusoe Island, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003 at Columbus County Hospital. He was born in Columbus County, the son of the late Neil and Ruth Etheridge Clewis. He was preceded in death by three brothers: Edison Bryant Clewis, Delbert Clewis and Isaac Clewis; and two sisters: Ethel Long and Etta Mae Long. He was known for his dugout boats, bowls and furniture that he made, some of which were on display at the Smithsonian Institute and featured in sports magazines. He also enjoyed playing the guitar. Final rites were conducted Wednesday, Nov. 26 at Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines by the Rev. Charles Cribb. Interment was in the Evans Cemetery. Peacock Funeral Home handled the arrangements. He is survived by two sisters: Ocie Lee Spivey of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Addie Long of Nakina. Pallbearers were Carlton Long, Marco Long, Vance Long, Ervin Etheridge, Vernon Long, Fonzie Spivey and Graham Clewis.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Junius Earl Stewart of Wilmington; two sisters: Dellie Harlow and Leona Bridgeman; and two brothers: David Spivey and Ted Spivey. Final rites will be conducted Wednesday, Nov. 26 at 3 p.m. at McKenzie Mortuary Chapel. Interment will be in the family plot at Myrtle Green Cemetery, off Stake Road in Tabor City.
