Jeane Beddingfield, 58
Jeane Beddingfield, 58, of Green River died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at her residence following a short illness. She was a native of Battle Creek, Mich., and was a daughter of the late James C. Lawson and Jewel Wells Lawson. She had been a resident of Henderson County since 1986. She attended East Flat Rock Church of God and was a former member of Glad Tidings Assembly in Battle Creek, Mich. She is survived by her loving husband, Denver Beddingfield of Green River; one son, David Beddingfield of Zirconia; one daughter, Kristina Nastase of Zirconia; and one grandson, Jordan Nastase of Zirconia. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at East Flat Rock Church of God with the Revs. John Powers and Michael White officiating. Memorials may be made to the family. Thomas Cappadona, 83
Thomas Cappadona, 83, of Columbus died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, in White Oak Manor, Tryon. He was born in Christ Hospital, Jersey City, N.J., the only child of the late John Cappadona and Raffaela Romagnino Cappadona. Reared in West New York, N.J., he graduated from Memorial High School there and from the New York School of Dental Technology at Columbia University in New York City. He owned and operated T.C. Laboratories, West New York, N.J., served as advisor of the town's Dental Health Program and served as secretary-treasurer of the Hudson County Dental Laboratory Association. He was very active in community affairs, was president of the West New York Kiwanis Club and North Hudson Chapter of Unico National. He served as chairman of the West New York Parking Authority, American Red Cross, and was active in the Boy Scouts of America, the Italian-American Community Organization and the New York Giants Booster Club. After leaving West New York, he lived in Fair Lawn, N.J., and Toms River, N.J., before moving to Columbus in 1987. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Susan; a son, John Cappadona; a daughter, Ruth DiStefano and her husband, Tony, all of Columbus; and three grandchildren, Michael DiStefano and his wife, Terri, of Englewood, Colo., Gary DiStefano of New York City and Laurie DiStefano Smith and her husband, Steve, of Chesapeake, Va. A viewing is not planned. At a later date, a memorial Mass will take place in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Tryon, with the Rev. Gregory Littleton officiating. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, Tryon. McFarland Funeral Chapel, Tryon, will be in charge of cremation arrangements.

Charles L. Cooper, 92, of Hendersonville died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at Carolina Village Health Care Center. Survivors include his wife, Jane Cooper, of Carolina Village; one daughter, Burrel, and her husband, William Yokel, of Mobile, Ala.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Emma L. Shipman, 88
Emma Lee Shipman, 88, of Brevard died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at the Brian Center Nursing Home in Brevard after an extended illness. She was a native of Greenville, S.C., and lived in Henderson County for most of her life. She was a daughter of the late James Merrill and Lillie Hall Merrill. She was the wife of Grady Shipman, who died in 1982. She was a member of the Little River Baptist Church. She is survived by three sons, Harold and Carroll Shipman of Horse Shoe and Boyce Shipman and his wife, Ann, of Chattanooga, Tenn.; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Shipman; one sister, Lovella Health of Penrose; three brothers, Hayes Merrill of Penrose, Charles Merrill of Hendersonville and Calvin Merrill of Bessemer, Ala.; and several nieces and nephews. A service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Shepherd's Church Street Chapel with the Rev. Mikell Bennett officiating. Burial will follow in Shepherd Memorial Park Cemetery. Joe Talley, 92
Joe "J.E." Talley, 92, of East Flat Rock passed away on Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at Pardee Hospital. He spent most of his life in Transylvania and Henderson counties. He was a mechanic by trade, but in his younger years, he used his great strength and driving abilities to help establish the Pisgah National Forest Park. He also loved playing checkers with anyone, young or old, and rarely lost. He was preceded in death by two wives, Martha Maxwell Talley and, later, Pauline Ward Talley; one daughter, Marie Harris Austin; four grandchildren; and several sisters and brothers. Surviving are three daughters, Olene Bracken and her husband, Bill, Hilda Gray and her husband, Calvin, all of Fort Pierce, Fla., and Kathy Hutchins of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; and many other family members. A funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at Shepherd's Church Street Chapel with the Rev. O. Darrell Rhodes officiating. Burial will follow in the Little River Baptist Church Cemetery. Maxine R. M. Blackwell, 70
Maxine Ruth Moss Blackwell, 70, of 206 Asheville Terrace Apartments, Asheville, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, after an extended illness, another angel for heaven to receive. The native and lifelong resident of Buncombe County was a member of Biltmore Baptist Church, member of Tri-County React and member of Asheville Terrace Tornadoes. She was a crossing guard at Biltmore School for many years, a security guard for DAP and an avid bowler for many years. She was the daughter of the late Homer Moss and Glen Swann Moss and wife of the late Horace Blackwell. She was also preceded in death by two infant daughters, Wanda and Cheryl Blackwell. She leaves behind her loving daughter, Lynn Hughes, and her husband, Larry, of Asheville; three grandchildren, Kevin and wife Peggy, Michelle and Heather Hughes, all of Asheville; three great-grandchildren, Sarah, Kevin II and Amber; four sisters, Marie Campbell and husband Bill of Weaverville, Geneva Moore and husband Bill of Fletcher, Iva Nell Best and husband Don of Asheville and Freida Webb of Arden; three brothers, Elmer Moss and wife Joyce of Candler, B.J. Moss and wife Frances of Dearing, Ga., and Ralph Moss and wife Anne of Weaverville; and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Cecil S. Clontz, 78
Mrs. Cecil S. Clontz, 78, of Horse Shoe died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at the Brian Center of Hendersonville. The Haywood County native moved to Hendersonville in 1946. She was of the Baptist faith and a member of Maple Hill Baptist Church. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Nellie Sanford and the wife of Norman A. Clontz, who died in 1981. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Patsy Mae Moore, who died in 1976; a son, Denny Clontz, who died in 1992; and several brothers and sisters. Survivors include three daughters, Jewel Orr of Hendersonville, Helen Rhinehart and her husband, Ronald, of Horse Shoe, Mary "Libby" Woody and her husband, Glenn Jr., of Pisgah Forest; two sons, George "Buck" Clontz and his wife, Earnestine, of Canton, Ray Clontz and his wife, Dixie, of Castle Rock, Wash.; one daughter-in-law, Lucille Clontz of Hamilton, Ga.; three sisters, Mary Bell Sizemore of Glendale, S.C., Daisy Gosnell of Glendale, S.C., and Pearl Stafford of Asheville; two brothers, Thomas Sanford of Glendale, S.C., and Monroe Sanford of Roebuck, S.C.; 29 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Benjamin P. Justice, 55
Benjamin Pierce Justice, 55, of Statesboro, Ga., and formerly of Henderson County, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born in Henderson County, the son of the late Benjamin P. Justice and Helen Youngblood Justice, and lived in this area until moving to Georgia several years ago. He was also the grandson of the late Ben and Nancy Ann Justice. A member of Refuge Baptist Church, he was employed in the farming industry. He is survived by three daughters, Candi Justice-Thompson of Dana, T. Justice of Black Mountain and Bennie Justice-Seay of Dana; a sister, Nancy Justice Ball of Flat Rock; an uncle and aunt, Pete and Margie Heatherly; two granddaughters; one grandson; three nephews; and several cousins. James G. Mace, 96
James G. Mace, 96, of the Big Willow community died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, in his home following a period of declining health. He was a native and lifelong resident of Henderson County and was a son of the late S.M. Mace and Clelia Hart Mace. He was a retired plumber and a 60-year member of the Plumber's Union Local 421 and was a member of Beulah Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Janice Orth and Vergie Hensley. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Genevieve Lucas Mace; a daughter and her husband, Patricia Ann and Jack H. Justus of the Big Willow community; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Ruby Atteberry Nelson, 91, of Hendersonville passed away on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at Pardee Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor Nelson. Pearl S. Adams, 94
Pearl Suber Adams, 94, of Asheville died Feb. 25, 2000, at Mission St. Joseph's Hospital. She is the daughter of the late Rev. Johnnie Suber and the late Ida Lispton Suber. She was a former resident of Wilmington, Del. She was a retired cook and a member of the Greater New Zion Baptist Church in Fletcher. She is survived by a daughter, Katie Mae Dixon of Asheville; two brothers and their wives, Edward Suber and his wife, Elsie, of Richmond, Va., and O.D. Suber and his wife, Lila, of Fletcher; a sister, Dorothy Sullivan of East Flat Rock; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. J. Plato Allen, 88
J. Plato Allen, 88, of Mountain Home died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, following a period of declining health in Pardee Health Care Center. He was a native and lifelong resident of Henderson County and was a son of the late Mitchell Allen and Daisy Smith Allen. He was a graduate of Balfour School and retired as foreman of the Henderson County School Bus Maintenance garage in 1978, following 43 years of service. He had been a member of Boiling Springs Baptist Church for more than 25 years and was a deacon emeritus. He was used of God to help start Mountain Home Bible Church, being the first to attend, and was a charter member. The church grew to 225 members and out of it, he worked toward establishing Faith Christian Day School. He served as chairman of the board and first treasurer. He was active in obtaining the property where the school is now located. He proudly burned the note when the land was paid off. He and his wife worked in the Gideon Ministry International, serving five counties at the same time. He worked with Frontier Baptist Missions in Mexico for several years as missionary helper in building churches. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jeannine Merrill, in 1998; a brother, Jim Allen, and a sister, Nancy Brannon. Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Mildred A. Allen; a son-in-law, Robert L. Merrill of Hendersonville; two grandsons, Grant Merrill and his wife, Bonnie, of Hendersonville and Robyn Merrill of Hendersonville; and two great-grandchildren, Christy and Eric Merrill. A funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Shepherd's Church Street Chapel with the Revs. Roy Rector, Jim Carrigan and David Crymble officiating. Burial will follow in Shepherd Memorial Park. Theodore A. Bober, 72
Theodore Anthony Bober, 72, of Wildwood Lane, Durham, Conn., died peacefully at his home on Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000. He was born in Meriden, Conn., and was the son of the late Theodore and Jeanette Bober. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Mitzi Revoir Bober, who was never far from his thoughts. He was a graduate of Meriden High School and prior to his retirement in 1983, he was employed as a quality control engineer for United Aircraft for more than 30 years. He is survived by three sons and their spouses, Theodore and Marilyn Bober of Durham, Conn., William and Trisha Bober of Horse Shoe and Kurt and Tamara Bober of Durham, Conn.; three daughters and their spouses, Janice and Bill Thiese of Fort Meyers, Fla., Patricia and David Marsden of Oakville, Conn., and his special daughter, Joanne Bober, of Durham, Conn.; his sister, Jeanette Mazza and her husband, Dominic "Mick," of Southington; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. James S. Drake Jr., 90
James Stoney Drake Jr., 90, of Hendersonville passed away on Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at Pardee Hospital. He was born on Aug. 24, 1909, in Lancaster, S.C., the son of the late James Stoney Drake and Lillian Gregory Drake. He had resided in Norfolk and Virginia Beach, Va., prior to moving to Henderson County 10 years ago. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Fletcher Fitzgerald Drake, in 1996, and a brother, William Gregory Drake. He was the past president of Drake Corp., a manufacturer of textile chemicals, and a former member of the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club, and of the Cavalier Country Club. He served on the Fishburne Military School Board of Education in Waynesboro, Va., for 12 years, was on the operating committee for eight years and served as president of the alumni association for five years. An avid outdoorsman, he was a member of the Virginia Wildlife Federation, serving on the board of directors for 14 years and as executive secretary for four years. He was also past editor and publisher of the federation's publication, The Federation Record. A past president of the Tri-CountySportmans Association, he was also active in the Tidewater Anglers Club and the Izaak Walton League. A former vice president of the Tidewater Kennel Club in Norfolk, Va., he was also active in the Southwalk Hunt Club in Surry, Va., Magnolia Hunt Club in Magnolia, Va., and the Coahoma County Sportsman's Association in Clarksdale, Miss. An active breeder of purebred beagles for more than 32 years, he was a member of the Oldtimers of the Kennel World and had bred and produced a champion, Gayline Princess, and received winner and best of show in the Westminster Kennel Club at Madison Square Garden. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Wilmoth Fitzgerald Drake, and two sons, James Stoney Drake III and his wife, Helen, of Savannah, Ga., and William Robinson Drake and his wife, Joan Ramsey, of Nevada City, Calif. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Carolina Village with the Rev. H. Alexander Viola officiating. Fredrick E. Parker, 67, of Pageland, S.C., died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, in his home. He was the son of James and Anne Jones Parker. He is survived by his wife, Mary H. Parker; a son, Fred Barnes of Bradenton, Fla.; two daughters, Rhonda Townsend of Penrose and Melody Parker of Pageland, S.C.; two sisters, Janice Hayes and Peggy Furr, both of Charlotte; and two grandchildren. John Robbins, 96
John "Boyce" Robbins, 96, of Edneyville died Sunday evening, Feb. 27, 2000, in Elizabeth House following a short illness. He was a native of Grayson County, Va., a prior resident of Bozeman, Mont., and lived in Henderson County for 27 years. He was a son of the late George Washington Robbins and Nancy Taylor Robbins and the husband of Lela Rogers Robbins, who died in 1992. While living in Montana, he worked in the pulpwood and lumber business and for the Montana State Forestry Service. He worked in the excavating business in Opelika, Ala., and retired in 1967. He was a life member of the Eagles, Area Lodge, No. 16, Helena, Mont., and a member of the Masonic Lodge, No. 21, in Townsend, Mont. He was the oldest living member of Fruitland United Methodist Church. He enjoyed gardening into his 90s and was an outdoorsman who enjoyed trapping. His hobbies included avid coin collecting, working jigsaw puzzles and serving as a rodeo clown at rodeos in Montana. He is survived by two daughters, Linda R. Collins and her husband, Dwight, of Raleigh, and Shelia R. Stempien and her husband, Joe, of Hendersonville; four grandchildren, Boyce Collins of San Diego, Calif., Tanya S. Moore of Hendersonville, Sabena C. Maiden of Durham and Todd Stempien of Lincolnton; three great-grandchildren, Amber and Blake Curd and Keely Stempien; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Kirby-Crowther Memorial Chapel of Shuler & Luck Funeral Home. The Rev. Dwight Giles will officiate. Burial will follow in Shepherd Memorial Park. McKinley Sanders, 78
McKinley Sanders, 78, of 20 Rosemary Road, Asheville, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000. A native of Ethridge, Tenn., he has been a resident of Buncombe County for the past 51 years. He was the son of the late Lester T. Sanders and Minnie Baker Sanders, and was preceded in death by a son, Donald M. Sanders. He was a World War II Army veteran and a retired employee of E.A. Industries Inc. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Frances Griffin Sanders; two daughters, Brenda Jones and her husband, Larry, of New Orleans, La., and Wanda Keyros of Atlanta, Ga.; a son, Ernest "Ed" Sanders and his wife, Verdie, of Hendersonville; a daughter-in-law, Betty Sanders of Asheville; four grandsons, Mark, Jeff, Michael and Greg Sanders; two great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Sanders and Trenton Sanders; and two nephews. Goldie S. Sandler, 88
Goldie Shames Sandler, 88, of Clemmons died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at Blumenthal Jewish Home in Clemmons. Born in Keosauqua, Iowa, she was a daughter of the late Jacob Shames and Freida Goldblatt Shames. She attended the University of Iowa and was a graduate of the University of Chicago and charter member of the Iowa chapter of the Sigma Delta Tau social sorority. She had a long career as a social worker, serving the Orlando, Fla., area through the Orange County Department of Social Services and in Columbia, S.C., at the South Carolina State Hospital before moving to Henderson County in 1967. She had worked for the Henderson County Department of Social Services as a social worker supervisor, retiring after nine years of service. She had been a volunteer for the Henderson County Board of Commissioners' study committee on day care and also had been volunteer services coordinator for Hospice, the Department of Social Services and the Red Cross. She was a hostess at the Cottage "Drop in" Center and volunteer coordinator for Youth Services. She was a member of the Jewish Ladies Auxiliary and the Agudas Israel Synagogue. Her husband, Frank Sandler, died in 1990. She moved to Clemmons in 1993. She is survived by two daughters, Judith Ann Sandler of Boston and Susan Sandler Campbell of Winston-Salem; a sister, Jeanette Fields, of River Forest, Ill.; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Shames Campbell and Sarah Holmes Campbell; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Oakdale Cemetery. Morris Kaplan will officiate. A memorial service and reception will be held at Agudas Israel Synagogue following the service at the graveside. Johanna M. Swart, 100
Johanna M. Swart, 100, of Hendersonville died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at Life Care Center. She was a native of Hastings, Minn., and a prior resident of Syracuse, N.Y., before moving to Henderson County in 1990. She was a daughter of the late Gustof Kunzel and Anna Marie Kletzer Kunzel and wife of Richard H. Swart Sr., who died in 1986. She was a member of Mount Pisgah Lutheran Church, enjoyed weaving and was an avid gardener. She is survived by her son, Richard H. Swart Jr., and his wife, Patricia, of Hendersonville; a sister, Dorothy Will of Honolulu; four grandchildren, Douglass Swart and his wife, Gretchen, of Exton, Pa., William Swart and his wife, Mara, of Lees Summit, Mo., Virginia Travers and her husband, John, of Charlotte Hall, Md., and Peter Swart and his wife, Sharon, of Mason, N.H.; and eight great-great-grandsons. No local services are planned. Burial will take place at Oakwood Cemetery in Syracuse, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mount Pisgah Lutheran Church, 2606 Chimney Rock Road, Hendersonville, N.C. 28792. Local arrangements are by Thos. Harrison M. Harp Jr., 81
Retired Air Force Col. Harrison Martin "Bill" Harp Jr., 81, of Sumter, S.C., died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter, S.C. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of the Holy Comforter in Sumter, S.C. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the home. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
