Katherine S. Carter, 86
Katherine Sawyer Carter, 86, of 128-C McMinn Road in Henderson County, formerly of Weaverville, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000. She was born June 10, 1914, in Madison County and was a resident of Buncombe County for 68 years. She was the daughter of the late William Roy Sawyer and Mary Etta Deweese Sawyer and wife of Ernest Carter, who died in 1968. Surviving are her daughters, Margaret Morgan and Mary Ruth Armstrong and husband, Jerry, of Hendersonville, and Dianne Howell and husband, Keith, of Fletcher; sons, Richard Carter and wife, Marie, of Asheville, William R. Carter and wife, Mary Dean, of Arden, Robert Lee Carter and wife, Doris, of Mars Hill and Jack Carter and wife, Dot, of Hendersonville; sisters, Betty Gentry of Hendersonville, Nell Hicks and Jean Spangler of Ohio and Joyce Fulghum of Texas; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville. The Rev. Mike Stewart will officiate. Burial will follow at Antioch Cemetery in Democrat. James A. Cartrette, 67
James A. Cartrette, 67, of Florence, S.C., died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000, in Beverly Healthcare at Asheville. He was a native of Marlboro, S.C., and a lifelong resident of Florence, S.C. He was the son of the late John T. Cartrette and Maude Culley Cartrette, and the husband of Kathleen Cartrette, who passed away April 10. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War and a member of S. Florence Baptist Church. He is survived by two sons, the Rev. James A. Cartrette and his wife, Penny Bradley Cartrette, of Zirconia and Steven G. Cartrette and his wife, Marie, of Florence, S.C.; two daughters, Deborah L. McMichael of Olanta, S.C., and Sandra J. Skerl and her husband, T.J., of Pawley's Island, S.C.; four granddaughters, Katelyn, Kassandra, Brittany and Brooke Cartette; and a brother, John Wayne Cartrette of Newberry, S.C. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Florence County Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The Rev. Howard Allen will officiate. Arline S. Graham, 92
Arline Steadman Graham, 92, of Wilmington, Del., formerly of Hendersonville, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000. She was born on Nov. 6, 1908, in Newark, N.J., the daughter of the late Charles A. Steadman and Martha F. Steadman. She was raised in Montclair, N.J. She was the wife of Henry B. Graham, who died in January 1981. They were married on June 14, 1930, in Upper Montclair, N.J. They lived in Detroit, Mich., Montclair, N.J., and Bloomington, Ill., before retiring in 1961 to Hendersonville. The Graham-Stowell Tower of Pardee Hospital was named for him. He served on the hospital board and was a financial contributor. She moved in 1986 to the Stonegates Retirement Community of Wilmington, Del., where she lived at the time of her death. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by her son, James H. Graham of Newark Valley, N.J.; her daughter, Susan G. Volgenau of Arlington, Va.; her five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A service and burial will be private at the convenience of the family. Norman G. Saltz, 54
Norman G. Saltz, 54, of Etowah passed away Friday, Nov. 17, 2000, in the Four Seasons Hospice Elizabeth House following a long illness. He was a native of Henderson County, the son of Beulah L. Saltz of Horse Shoe and the late Rev. Eugene D. Saltz. He was employed at Branford Wire in Mountain Home for 22 years, before becoming disabled in 1997. He was a Marine Corps veteran, serving from 1965 to 1969. Survivors include his wife, Patricia Saltz; his daughter, Tammy Gillespie and son-in-law, Kevin, of East Flat Rock; his 7-year-old granddaughter, Whitney Gillespie of East Flat Rock; three sisters, Jean White of Mountain Home, Barbara Mathis of Etowah and Margaret Mathis of Dana; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Shepherd's Church Street Chapel. The Rev. Buddy Sizemore will officiate. Burial will follow in Shepherd Memorial Park, with military graveside rites conducted by Hedrick-Rhodes Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5206, Hubert M. Charles Edward Woody, 61, of Arden died Thursday, Nov. 17, 2000, in the Laurels of Hendersonville after a long illness. He was born in Buncombe County, the son of the late Burlin John Woody and Lorene Edith Ramsey. He was a front-end manager of Ingles Market on Fleming Street and a member of Candler House of Prayer. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Imogene Woody; three daughters, Debra Ann Williams of Fletcher, Toni Lyn Metcalf of Horse Shoe and Tracy Lee Messer of Clyde; a son, Kevin Woody of Arden; and 10 grandchildren. Jane B. Case, 88, of Fletcher died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, in Park Ridge Hospital following a period of declining health. She was born in Yancey County, a daughter of the late Neil Tipton and Mary Renfro Tipton, and wife of Arthur "Bus" Case, who died in 1995. She lived in Henderson County for more than 65 years. She is survived by a son, Randall Case and his wife, Mary Lee, of Fletcher; two daughters, Joan McGraw and her husband, Bill, of Tuxedo and Judy Berry and her husband, Thomas, of Fletcher; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Mary James Gibbs, 66, of Brevard died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, in a Hendersonville health care center. She was a native of Transylvania County and a daughter of the late Claude Allison and Ina Irene Zachary Allison. Survivors include two daughters, Lynn Sprouse and Juana Siniard of Brevard; a son, Bradley McJunkin of Brevard; two sisters, Joann Barnett of Brevard and Nan Walker of Pisgah Forest; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandson. William A. Hancock, 53
William Andrew "Andy" Hancock, 53, of U.S. 176, Tryon, died Friday, Nov. 17, 2000, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center at Spartanburg, S.C. He was born in Tryon, the son of Hazel Beeson Hancock of Tryon and the late Craig Stephen Hancock. He was a 1965 graduate of Tryon High School and received a football scholarship to Furman University, where he graduated in 1969. He played baseball with the Washington Senators organization and later coached baseball at Buford High School in Buford, Ga., where he had several conference championships. He became a scout for the Texas Rangers and later finished his career with the San Diego Padres as Southeast Regional Scouting Director. He was a member of Tryon United Methodist Church. A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at McFarland Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Keith Franklin will officiate. Burial will follow at Polk Memorial Gardens. Gregory Arnold Maxwell, 42, of Hendersonville passed away Friday, Nov. 17, 2000, in Pardee Hospital. He was the son of the late James Donald Maxwell Jr. and Ada Scalf Maxwell. He is survived by his brother, James Donald Maxwell III and his wife, Sharon, of Hendersonville; a sister, Ruby Joyce Temple and her husband, Davide, of Cullman, Ala.; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The Rev. Michael Engle will officiate. Ruth B. Dusenbury
Ruth B. Dusenbury of Hendersonville died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, in Pardee Hospital following a short illness. She was a native of Bryson City and lived in Henderson County for most of her life. She was a daughter of the late Lewis P. Buchanan and Nancy Bishop Buchanan and the wife of John F. "Jack" Dusenbury, who died in 1999. She was also preceded in death by four sisters, Edith Franklin, Lillian Franklin, Gladys Sawyer and Frances Buchanan; and a niece, Phyllis Sawyer. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church. She is survived by a sister, Ruby B. Wells of Hendersonville; a brother, Claude W. Buchanan of Chicago; five nieces, Judy Harrell of Cumming, Ga., Diane Hamilton of Norcross, Ga., Carolyn Draper of Martinsburg, W.Va., Barbara Brackett of Kingston, Tenn., and Diane Merzlak of Hendersonville; and two nephews, Donald J. Sawyer of Hendersonville and Edward Franklin of Atlanta, Ga. A requiem Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Our Lady of the Angels Chapel at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church. Rachel Atkins Millard, 75, of Hendersonville died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, in her home following an extended illness. She was born in Colfax, a daughter of the late Wilford R. Atkins and Gladys McDowell Atkins. She also lived in Orlando, Fla., prior to moving to Hendersonville in 1970. She was a registered nurse and employed as an instructor with the Fletcher Hospital School of Nursing until her retirement in 1983. She was a member of Fletcher Seventh-day Adventist Church. She is survived by her loving husband, John S. Millard; a daughter, Mary Ann Huntley and her husband, Mark, of Fletcher; two sons, John Patrick Millard and his wife, Lydia, of Greenville, S.C., and Glen Michael Millard and his wife, Patricia, of Lake Mary, Fla.; a brother, Jake Atkins of Ooltewah, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Jennifer Millard and Brian Millard; three great-grandchildren, Hailey Nicole Millard, Trey Millard and Miranda Millard; a nephew, Russell Atkins; and a niece, Lori Mikalonis. Ramona B. Rhodes, 90
Ramona Brock Rhodes, 90, of White Oak Manor, Tryon, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, Spartanburg, S.C., following a brief illness. She was a native of Hendersonville and grew up in Spartanburg. She was a graduate of Winthrop College and did graduate work at Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. She taught public school music and directed church choirs in Tryon, Columbus and Landrum, S.C., for many years, as well as teaching voice and piano privately. She is survived by three daughters, Carolyn Roberts of Spartanburg, S.C., Patricia Williams of Mooresville and Lucy Woodman of Cheyenne, Wyo.; two sisters, Pauline Beyer of Hendersonville and Evelyn Waldrop of Greenville, S.C.; and six grandchildren, Hannah Roberts of Spartanburg, S.C., Elaine Phelps of Salisbury, Claudia Woodman of Las Vegas, Nev., Audrey Williams of Greensboro, Jeffrey Woodman of Santa Fe, N.M., and Andrew Woodman of Cheyenne, Wyo. Edith C. Trochim, 89, of Hendersonville died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, in Park Ridge Living Center following complications from an accident. She was a native of Chicago and lived in California before moving to Henderson County 10 years ago. She was the wife of Joseph Trochim, who died in 1991. She was employed by Sears Roebuck as a secretary earlier in her life. She attended Bethany Bible Church. She is survived by two sons, Robert Trochim and his wife, Lynn, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Thomas Trochim and his wife, Barbara, of Flat Rock; a sister, Marie Sell of Chicago; eight grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. Nellie "Nell" J. Davis, 71, of East Flat Rock died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, at her residence following a lengthy illness. She was born in Thomasville and had lived in Henderson County for 48 years. She was the wife of Grady H. Davis, who died in 1991. She had been a cosmetologist for Eckerd Drugs for 20 years until illness forced her retirement. She was of the Methodist faith. She is survived by her daughter, Linda D. Lockaby of Appling, Ga.; her son, Richard F. Davis of Hendersonville; her sister, Helen J. Clark of Lexington; three grandchildren, Carla D. Thompson, Mitzi N. Davis and P. Matthew Lockaby; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held Wednesday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The Rev. Harold McKinnish will officiate. Frances Ruth Fuhrman, 86, of Hendersonville died Monday, Nov. 20, 2000, at the Brian Center after a brief illness. The Kalamazoo, Mich., native had lived in Hendersonville the past 12 years. She was the daughter of the late Chauncey Z. Bennett and Ethel McCarty Bennett. She was the wife of Dr. Edwin G. Fuhrman, who died in 1995. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Lee Fuhrman, who died in 1973. She was a member of the Hendersonville First United Methodist Church. She is survived by her daughter Susan Fuhrman of Hendersonville. The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Brunson Memorial Chapel of the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Lois Elizabeth Gehlke, 76, of Brevard died at her residence Oct. 19, 2000. She was a native of Cleveland and was the daughter of the late Erma Bacon and Florence Dlesing Bacon. She was a member of the China Painters of America. Survivors include her husband, Henry Charles Gehlke; two sons, Robert John Gehlke of Goshen, Ind., and James Scott Gehlke of Pittsburgh; one daughter, Margaret Joyce Willis of Altoona, Fla.; one sister, Arleen Simon of Brunswick Hills, Ohio; a cousin, Bob Kurfis of Olmstead Falls, Ohio; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mary G. McCabe, 77
Mary G. McCabe, 77, of Hendersonville died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, at Four Seasons Elizabeth House following a period of declining health. She was born in Savannah, Ga., a daughter of the late William C. Gilbert and Mary K. Waring Gilbert, and had resided in the Hendersonville area for more than 22 years. She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church and was a member of the Order of the Daughter of the King. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the late Roy E. McCabe Sr., in 1983. She is survived by four sons, Roy E. McCabe Jr. of Snellville, Ga., James W. McCabe of Spartanburg, S.C., William G. McCabe of Greenwood, S.C., and Thomas I. McCabe of Hendersonville, with whom she made her home; a daughter, Mary Anne Miller of Kannapolis; 10 grandchildren; one niece; and one nephew. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. James Episcopal Church. The Rev. H. Alexander Viola will officiate. Chloe B. Tinker, 88
Chloe Brannon Tinker of Merritt Island, Fla., died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000, at the Health Center of Merritt Island, Fla. She was born in Orlando, Fla., on Jan. 27, 1912, and was married in 1935 to Roland F. Tinker, deceased, who was the son of baseball Hall of Fame great Joe Tinker. She and "Rollie" moved their family to Cocoa Beach, Fla., where they owned and operated Tinker-by-the Sea Motel from 1950 until 1972. They divided their time between Cocoa Beach, Fla., and Hendersonville for many years, and Chloe continued in that tradition until she went into the nursing home in 1998. She is survived by a twin sister, Connie Brah, of Orlando, Fla.; a daughter and son-in-law, Clancy T. and Stephen H. Mundy of Virginia Beach, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Gloria Tinker of Gatlinburg, Tenn., and Hendersonville; four grandchildren, Dawn Mann, Diandra Trotter, Michael Mundy and Jennifer Gouldthread; and three great-grandchildren, Thomas, Cody and Lydia Mann. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church of Winter Park, Fla. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to the First Christian Church, 1140 S.
