Richard L. Patterson, 56
Richard L. Patterson, 56, of Flat Rock died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, at Pardee Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was a lifelong resident of Henderson County and was the son of the late Craig Patterson and Brantley Harden Patterson. He was of the Methodist faith. Survivors include two daughters; Denise Arriaga and Renee Patterson, both of Summerfield; four brothers, Narvin and David Patterson of East Flat Rock, Cecil and Clyde Patterson of Flat Rock; three sisters, Sadie Cairnes of Mills River, Sybil Taylor of Crab Creek and Margaret Sparks of Flat Rock and grandchildren, Brandon, Cody, Heather and Kayla Patterson, Destiny and Faith Wilson, all of Summerfield. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, in Kirby Memorial Chapel of Shuler Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Lucille Riggs, 84
Lucille Riggs, 84 of Laurel Park, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at the Laurels of Hendersonville. She was born on Oct. 24, 1917, in Willmar, Minn., a daughter of the late Gustav Adolph and Edna Boom Winberg. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas H. Charlton; her daughter, Margaret Swanson; her brother, Wendell Winberg and her sister, Harriet Wikel. She and her husband Frank have been residents of Laurel Park since 1980. She was a member of the Altar Guild at the Episcopal Church of St. John in the Wilderness, and enjoyed golfing and playing bridge. Survivors include her husband, Frank G. Riggs of Hendersonville; her daughter, Patricia C. Hickey of Minneapolis, Minn.; five grandchildren; one great grandson; her brothers, Robert and Donald Winberg and her sisters Marge Hale and Ruth McArdle. She is also survived by Frank’s two daughters; three sons; eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held in at a later date in the Memorial Garden of The Episcopal Church of St. John in the Wilderness. Grady W. Wilkie, 83
Grady W. Wilkie, 83, of Hendersonville, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at the Laurels of Hendersonville after a brief illness. Born December 13, 1918, in Fletcher, he was a lifelong resident of Henderson County. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elsie Pruitt Wilkie, who died in 1979; a son, Keith Wilkie; two sisters, Katherine Ruth, and Margaret Youngblood and a brother, Claude Wilkie. He retired in 1981 from Ecusta after 40 years of service. He served more than two years at the CC Camp in Robbinsville before serving with the U.S. Army Air Corps during W. W. II in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the Hendersonville First Baptist Church where he was a member of the Bill Bates Sunday School Class. He was a former member and deacon of Calvary Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Maude Wilkie; a daughter, Kay Osteen and her husband Steve of Hendersonville; a step-son, Jimmy Summey of Hendersonville; four sisters, Violet Wood and Edith Reed, both of Fletcher, Doris Baldwin and Madge Sigman, both of Hendersonville; two brothers, Carroll and Clarence Wilkie, both of Fletcher; three grandchildren, Natalie Outlaw and her husband Michael, Chris Osteen and Jessica Summey, all of Hendersonville and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Mausoleum Chapel of Shepherd Memorial Park with the Revs. Kenneth Fendley and Dr. Buddy Mullinax officiating. Burr Coley Brock Jr., 81, of Pineville Road, Farmington, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, in his home. He was born Aug. 26, 1920, in Davie County to the late B.C. Brock Sr. and Laura Tabor Brock. He was the husband of the late Ruth Rankins Brock. He was a retired Realtor. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, receiving a Purple Heart. He was a member of the N.C. Realty Board and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. He was also preceded in death by a son, Robert Burr Brock; a brother, Rufus Brock; and a sister, Margaret Jo Brock. Survivors include two daughters, Caroline Brock of Fallston and Patricia Genovese of Hendersonville; a grandson, Dominick Genovese; a sister, Frances Tucker of Eden; four brothers, John Brock of Mocksville and James Brock, William L. William L. Gardo, 73
William Leon Gardo, 73, of Forest Hills Drive, Forest City, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, in his home. He was a native of Spartanburg County, S.C., a son of the late William Christopher Gardo and Mary Powers Gardo. He was the husband of the late Hazel Newman Gardo. He was a member of the Forest City First United Methodist Church. He was an Air Force veteran, serving from 1948 to 1954 and attaining the rank of staff sergeant. He was a Master Mason and a member of Spindale Masonic Lodge No. 673 AF&AM and a Shriner. He was the retired owner and operator of the former Gardo’s Restaurant that was a Forest City landmark for many years. Survivors include a son, Bill Gardo of Hendersonville; a daughter, Martha Gardo Campbell of Bostic; two sisters, Vivian Morris of Union Mills and Bernice Dobbins of Rutherfordton; and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Forest City. The Rev. David Hughes Hobson, OSL, will officiate. Robert W. McGlone, 76
Robert W. McGlone, 76, of Hendersonville, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, in Mission St. Joseph’s Hospital at Asheville. He was a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., and lived in Henderson County for 16 years. In 1984, he retired from the Grumman Aircraft Company on Long Island, N.Y. He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II and a member of St. James Episcopal Church. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Carol; a son, Mark McGlone of Long Island, N.Y.; three daughters, Barbara Minard of Long Island, N.Y., Laura Scott of California and Patricia Swan of Kerhonkson, N.Y.; and eight grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. James Episcopal Church. The Rev. Robert Salamone will officiate. Carroll W.G. Neal, 68
Retired Air Force Tech. Sgt. Carroll Wayne Glen Neal, 68, of Rosamond, Calif., died Wednesday, July 3, 2002, in Antelope Valley Hospital, Lancaster, Calif., following a short illness. He was born Jan. 25, 1934, in Henderson County to the late Irvin Andrew Neal and Ethel Lola Hollingsworth Neal. He was a graduate of the former Edneyville High School and a member of Mountain View Baptist Church. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1954, where he proudly served his country for 21 years, retiring with the rank of technical sergeant. After retiring from the Air Force, he was employed as an aircraft electrician at Edwards Air Force Base in California. He spent a total of 47 years, 21 enlisted and 26 in Civil Service with the Air Force. He retired in 2000. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 589, Salinas, Calif. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Ethel Neal McCrary of Hendersonville; and five brothers, Fred H. Neal, Frank M. Neal, Raymond A. Neal, Joseph “Joe” M. Neal Sr. and Clarence R. Neal of Hendersonville. He never met a stranger. He loved his family and friends. The military was his life. He is survived by four aunts of Hendersonville; and five sisters-in-law, 24 nieces and nephews and several cousins living in Hendersonville and throughout the United States; the Robinson family in California; and military friends. A memorial service was held in Rosamund, Calif., under the direction of Chapel of the Valley Mortuary in Palmsdale, Calif. A memorial graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The Rev. Tommy Martin will officiate. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Hedrick-Rhodes Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5206, Hubert M. Smith American Legion Post 77 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 14. Janet A. Snow, 86, of Hendersonville, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, in her home. She was a native of Cleveland, Ohio, and lived for many years in Bedford, Ohio, before moving to Henderson County 23 years ago. She was a graduate of Kent State University and was employed by the Bedford City School System as a second grade teacher for 10 years. She was a member of Pinecrest Presbyterian Church, where she and her husband sang for many years and were also in the handbell choir. She volunteered for the Blue Ridge Literacy Council, teaching adults to read, and enjoyed square dancing with her husband. She was an avid reader. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Charles D. Snow; her daughter and son in-law, Judith S. and Jay Carrigan of Hendersonville; her daughter, Jan C. Snow of Lakewood, Ohio; her son and daughter-in-law, Ray W. and Susan Snow of Miami, Fla.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21, at Pinecrest Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Charles B. Evans will officiate. Hilliard H. Blankenship, 85
Hilliard Henry Blankenship, 85, of Woodland Drive, Hendersonville, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002, in the Heritage Hills Health Care Center. He was a native of Buncombe County, the son of the late James Henry Blankenship and Laney Jane Edmonds Blankenship. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, who served his country in the Pacific Theater from 1943 to 1946. He received his bachelor of science degree from Wake Forest University and his master’s from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a high school teacher in Brunswick, Chatham and Henderson counties for 43 years and owned and operated the Four Seasons Driving School in Hendersonville. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Thelma Bumgarner Blankenship; two sons, Tommy Blankenship and his wife, Glenda, of Ocala, Fla., and Randy Blankenship of Hendersonville; a daughter, Henrietta Guice and her husband, Donald, of Hendersonville; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the WNC State Veterans Cemetery at Black Mountain, with military honors presented by the Buncombe County Veterans Council Memorial Team. Ruby B. Chapman, 80
Ruby Estelle Banther Chapman, 80, of Lake Toxaway went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002. She was a native of Transylvania County, a daughter of the late Dock Banther and Betha Patterson Banther. She was the wife of the late J.B. Chapman. She was a 1939 graduate of Rosman High School and was the valedictorian. She was also preceded in death by a son, George Welyczko. Survivors include two sons, Larry Welyczko of Lake Toxaway and Dock “Brother” Welyczko of the home; a daughter, Anela McMahan and her husband, Sammy, of Brevard; two brothers, Lawrence Banther of Franklin and Curtis Banther of Brevard; two sisters, Annie Keller of Marietta, Ga., and Janice Van Buren of Mountain City, Ga.; two grandsons, George Brent Welyczko and his wife, Kelly, and Alex McMahan; a granddaughter, Caitlin McMahan; four great-grandsons, Reno, Alec, Brady and Jordan Brent Welyczko; three stepdaughters, Hazel Holcombe of Irmo, S.C., Janie McCall of Brevard and Angie Mayes of Jacksonville, N.C.; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. Charlotte R. Clayton, 82
Charlotte Ruth “Miss Charlotte” Clayton, 82, of Hendersonville died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, in Pardee Care Center. She was a native and lifelong resident of Henderson County, a daughter of the late Noble G. Clayton and Victoria Orr Clayton. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Robin Clayton and Ed Clayton; and a sister, Salome Clayton. She worked as an inspector for Chipman Lacrosse Hosiery Mill. She taught the 2 year olds at the Pumpkin Shell day care for 15 years, Bruce Drysdale after-school care for 10 years and was a teacher of the 11-year-old girls at Hendersonville First Baptist Church, where she was a member, for 35 years. She is survived by two sisters, Mamie Clayton of Hendersonville and Martha Delno Whitaker of Charlotte; nephews, Charles Clayton and his wife, Ann, of Horse Shoe and Ken Whitaker; and nieces, Barbara Clayton of East Flat Rock and Diane Keller; and other nieces and nephews. Travis J. Duncan, 79
Travis Juliar Duncan, 79, of East Flat Rock passed away Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002, in the Elizabeth House. He was a native and lifelong resident of Henderson County, the son of the late Jessie Duncan and Eliza Collins Duncan. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He is survived by seven sons, Eddie Duncan of Mountain Home, Jasper Duncan, Robert Duncan and Adam Duncan of Flat Rock, Glenn Duncan of Georgia, Travis K. Duncan of Tuxedo and Steve Duncan of Asheville; seven daughters, June Allison of Texas, Frieda Candler and Debbie Phillips of Upward, Barbara Duncan of Greenville, S.C., and Irene Munoz, Sheila Duncan and Peggy Duncan of Hendersonville; three sisters, Thursal Holbert, Virginia Morrow and Seretta Mae Justice; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Ruth R. Garrison
Ruth Rozier Garrison, a native of Hendersonville, died Monday, Oct. 14, 2002. She was the daughter of the late Stephen Spurgeon Rozier and Margaret Justice Rozier. She was the wife of the late Walter S. Garrison. She was a graduate of the Asheville Normal School. She was employed as an administrative assistant at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Oteen, retiring in 1980. She was a member of Hendersonville First Baptist Church. Survivors include her two sons, James Garrison of Charlotte and Stephen Garrison of Fayetteville; a granddaughter, Stephanie Garrison of Raleigh; and a sister, Rose Alice Dishner of Hendersonville. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Oakdale Cemetery. The Rev. Kenneth Fendley will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Thos. Wilbur H. Glover, 96
Wilbur Hillman Glover, 96, of Hendersonville, died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002, in Hendersonville. He was a longtime resident of Hendersonville and a museum director and history professor. He was born Aug. 18, 1906, in Fort Atkinson, Wis. He earned his undergraduate degree from Milton College, Milton, Wis., and his master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He taught in several colleges that are now part of the University of Wisconsin system before beginning a long career as director of the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society in Buffalo, N.Y., and the Shaker Museum in Pittsfield, Mass. He also served as director of the education department of the Wisconsin Historical Society in Madison and, while director in Buffalo, as an adjunct professor at the then State Teachers College in Buffalo. A prolific writer, he authored Farm and College, a history of the University of Wisconsin’s department of agriculture, and co-authored the History of Erie County. While director of the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society, he founded the magazine “Niagara Frontier,” a publication bringing together the writings of Western New York’s large group of historians, geologists and genealogists. He was a member of the Thursday Club in Buffalo. In the 1970s, he was volunteer president of the Buffalo Symphonette Society that was conducted and directed by his good friend Fred Ressel, violist for the BPO. After retiring in 1975, he and his wife moved to Hendersonville, where they celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary in September. In Hendersonville, he continued his volunteer work in the music community serving on the “Music in the Mountains” summer program committee. They joined Grace Lutheran Church on their arrival in Hendersonville and were active members for many years. He was preceded in death by his elder daughter, Fleur Houtz of Hendersonville; and his son, Evan Glover of East Aurora, N.Y. Survivors include his wife, Thelma Pedersen Glover; his younger daughter, Deborah Glover Gentry of Chicago, Ill.; five grandchildren, including Christopher Scott of Bala Cynwyd, Pa., and Christopher Perry of Chicago, Ill.; five great-grandchildren; and the couple’s devoted caregiver, Ellen Youngblood of Hendersonville. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Pine Park retirement community, 2601 U.S. 64 East, Hendersonville. Memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church. She was the wife of the late Dock C. Case and the late Grady P. Luke Sr. She was a member of Earlewood Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a son, Douglas C. Case Sr.; and a grandson, Thomas Case. Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Charles M. and Frances Case of Cayce, S.C., Dock S. and Mary Case of Winter Haven, Fla., Steve A. and Debbie Case of Florence, S.C.; a daughter-in-law, Elaine S. Dr. James Stevens Stout, 79, of Brevard, died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002. He was born in Akron, Ohio. He was a devoted and beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. In addition to his family, which was his greatest love, he loved classical music, time with his friends, baseball, dogs (especially collies), reading and sharing a good meal with others. He was an Army veteran of World War II, courageously serving his country in the infantry. He saw action in the Battle of the Bulge and was part of the ground force that invaded France and Germany. He was a 1948 graduate of Wooster College with a bachelor of arts degree in chemistry. He earned his master’s in 1952 from Emory University and his doctorate of medicine in 1957 from the Medical College of Georgia. In his many years of devoted and caring service as a physician, he worked in private practice in Newark, Del., served in the emergency room at Pardee Hospital and for three separate periods of time worked for the DuPont Co. at Wilmington, Del., Pompton Lakes, N.J., and Brevard, where he eventually retired. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Betty Mae Stout; two sons, James Walden Stout of Seattle, Wash., and Jeffrey Vernon Stout of Charlotte; a daughter, Linda Carol Stout of East Flat Rock; grandchildren, Jesse Walden Stout, Gabriel James Stout and Benjamin Yale Hedrick of Seattle and Bryce James Stout and Brittany Joy Stout of Charlotte. A service will be held to honor his life at 2 p.m. Friday at Davidson River Presbyterian Church in Brevard. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Transylvania County or the National Parkinson Foundation. Moody-Connolly Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Albert G. Reid, 54
Retired Air Force Capt. Albert George Reid, 54, of Etowah died Friday, Oct. 11, 2002, in Amarillo, Texas. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today in the Kirby Memorial Chapel of Shuler Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
