George Williams
George Allen Williams, 71, of Clinton, Mo., died Thursday, June 27, 2002, in Clinton Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Clinton, Mo. He was the husband of Linda Dockter Williams. Born in Tryon, he was the son of the late Stewart and Minnie Walker Williams. He worked as an aircraft mechanic for Delta Airlines. Survivors include two sons, Mike Williams of Clinton, Mo. and Matthew Williams of Kansas City, Mo.; Three daughters, Pam Burnham of North Glenn, Colorado, Jodi Harsch of Sedalia, Mo., and Lisa Knisely of Chilhowee, Mo.; one brother, Howard Williams of Tryon; five sisters, Gladys Dempsey and Ina Kimberlin, both of Landrum, Irene Kuykendall of Tryon, Betty Smith of Rock Hill, S.C. and Lorena Brown of Salineville, Ohio; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Boyce and Lawrence Williams; and three sisters, Myrtle Thompson, Ruth Morgan and Peggy Dedman. Graveside services with Military Rites by Polk County Memorial Burial Squad will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 1, 2002, in Williams Family Cemetery in Lynn with Dr. Joseph L. Emery officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the graveside service from 1 to 1:45 p.m. in the McFarland Funeral Chapel in Tryon. Memorials may be made to Polk County Memorial Burial Squad, P.O. Box 66, Columbus, N.C. 28722. McFarland Funeral Chapel, Tryon, is in charge of arrangements.

Jean Dustin
Jean A. (Fey) Dustin, 87, of Tryon, died June 29, at her home in Tryon after a brief illness. Mrs. Dustin was a homemaker. She preferred Mrs. to Miss or Ms. and was proud that she was married to the same man for 61 years, maintained a happy and secure home, and successfully raised a family. She was born in Albert Lea, Minnesota, on March 14, 1915, and earned a degree in Home Economics from Iowa State university, where she also met her future husband, Mr. Thomas B. Dustin. They were married secretly in 1939 because the company at which they both worked had a rule against employees marrying one another. Mrs. Dustin was one of five sisters raised by a blind piano tuner and his wife. Although she was a homemaker, she worked for the IRS and H&R Block from time to time to help with the family finances. She lived most of her life in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but moved to Tryon in 1981 to enjoy retirement with Tom. They both loved to play bridge and golf and were members of country clubs in both Milwaukee and Tryon. Survivors include two sons, Donald F. Dustin of Boulder, Colo., and James E. Dustin of Walden, Colo.; Don is a chemist working at the Department of Energy Rocky Flats Plant in Golden, and Jim Dustin owns the Jackson County Star, the weekly newspaper in Walden. She is also survived by sisters, Laura Taylor and Lois Selim, both of Boone, Iowa. She was preceded in death by two other sisters, Violet Fey of Boone and Shirley Salvato of Sacramento, Calif. Mrs. Dustin was also preceded in death by her husband, Tom, who died in 2000 after a long illness and who was cared for to the end by Jean. Her final wish was to join her husband, and now she has. There will be a reception for family and friends from 2 to 5 p.m. on July 20 at the Dustin home, 1235 Braewick Road, Tryon.

Louise Setzer
Louise Lancaster Setzer, 87, of Mableton, Ga., died Sunday, June 30, 2002, in the Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. Born in Spartanburg County, she was the daughter of the late Chester Sorrell and Winfred Alverson Lancaster. She was a 1937 graduate of Spartanburg General Hospital School of Nursing and had been a nurse for 50 years having worked with Emory University and the State of Georgia. She was a member of the Leland United Methodist Church in Mableton and was the widow of the late Frederick W. Setzer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Pinckney Lancaster, and a sister, Rosa Lancaster Rogers. Surviving are one daughter, Jane Setzer of Mableton; two brothers, Sam Lancaster of Spartanburg and Clifford Lancaster of Landrum. Funeral services will be held today at 11 a.m. at the Leland United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Millie Kim. Interment will follow in the Mount Harmony Cemetery.

Maxine Steppe
Maxine Canencia Steppe, 69, of Mill Spring, died Sunday, June 30, 2002, in Lifecare of Hendersonville. Born in Honolulu, Hi., she was the daughter of the late Lucio and Benehilda Suan Canencia. She was the widow of Billy H. Steppe, who died in 1987. Mrs. Steppe was a member of the Coopers Gap Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Malia A. Crook of Hendersonville; a son, Bruce Steppe of Mill Spring; four sisters; three brothers; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. today, July 2, 2002, in the Coopers Gap Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Warren Elliott officiating. McFarland Funeral Chapel, Tryon, is in charge of arrangements.

Joe Miller
Joe A. Miller, 86, of Rutherfordton, died Monday, July 1, 2002, at his home after a brief illness. Born in and a lifelong resident of Polk County, he was the son of the late Osborn and Ethel Arledge Miller. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II. Mr. Miller was retired from Duke Power Company after 36 years of service. He was a member of Green River Baptist Church in Rutherfordton, where he served as a deacon, church treasurer and chairman of the cemetery committee. He was also a member of Sunny View Ruritan Club and served as its first president. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Beryl Davidson Miller; one son, Barry A. Miller of Raleigh; one sister, Grace Miller Swain of Inman; one brother, Hugh A. Miller of Green Creek; two grandchildren, Angie Miller of Columbus, and Adrian Miller of Fernadina Beach, Fla.; three great-grandchildren, Ian Miller, Rachel Miller and Catherine Miller; three nieces; and four nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Yates A. Miller. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 4, 2002, in Green River Baptist Church with Pastor Gary Curtis officiating. Mr. Miller will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. prior to the service. Burial with military rites by Fort Bragg Casualty Office, Fort Bragg, will be in the Green River Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. this evening in the McFarland Funeral Chapel. McFarland Funeral Chapel, Tryon, is in charge of arrangements.

Nelline S. Ridings
Nelline S. Ridings, 80, of Landrum, died July 2, 2002, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. A native of Landrum, she was a daughter of the late Aaron and Mattie Edwards Shehan. She was of the Pentecostal faith. Survivors include a daughter, Phyllis R. Jolley of Columbus; a son, Howard Keith Ridings of Landrum; two sisters, Lucille Green and Edith Vehorn, both of Landrum; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Graveside services were held Friday in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Tommy Turner. Floyd’s North Church Street Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Robert Selover
Robert Briggs Selover, 90, of Tryon, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, in Elizabeth House in Hendersonville. He was the husband of Margaret Seder Selover, who died Jan. 31, 2002. They were married 61 years. Born in Delaware, Ohio, he was the son of Ama Main Selover and James R. Selover. He received his A.B and M.A. degrees from Ohio University and his Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Minnesota in 1940. After receiving his degree, he worked for the Adjutant General’s office in Washington, D.C., and then for The Prudential Insurance Company of America in the personnel research department. He served in the U.S. Navy from Sept. 1942 to Dec. 1945 as an aviation psychologist, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander. After the war, he returned to Prudential and retired as vice president – personnel research, in 1974. He and Margaret lived in Bernardsville, New Jersey, until their retirement, moving to Tryon in 1978. In his retirement, he was active in the Tryon Painters and Sculptors as a sculptor, working in wood, marble, clay and bronze media. He was a member of the Tryon Presbyterian Church. Survivors include one son, Robert Edwin Selover, of Morristown, N.J.; one daughter, Janet Selover Wulster, of Lebanon, N.J.; and five grandchildren. Memorial services for both Robert and Margaret Selover will be held Saturday, July 6, at 10 a.m. at Tryon Presbyterian Church with Dr. James C. McPherson officiating. Mary Helen Prince
Mary Helen Neill Prince, 74, of Columbus, died Wednesday, July 3, 2002 at St. Luke’s Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Ralph E. Neill, Sr. and Elizabeth Burton Neill of Bald Creek. She was employed for several years by the North Carolina Extension Service in Watauga and Polk counties. She served as director of the Home Management House at Appalachian State University in Boone. She was the first special education teacher hired in Rutherford County at Harris School. She also taught special education in Arlington and St. Petersburg, Fla. She is survived by her husband, Thomas Leon Prince, of the home; a son Thomas Leon Prince II of Spartanburg, SC; two brothers, Ralph Neill Jr. of Charlotte, Jimmy Neill of Burnsville; three sisters, Betty Bullock of Illinois, Clara Christine Knight of Charlotte, and Linda Wheeler of Burnsville. She was predeceased by a brother, Charles Neill, formerly of Hickory. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 6, 2002, at the Melvin Hill Church of the Brethren in Green Creek, with the Rev. Earl Byers officiating. Joe Simasek presented the eulogy. Interment was private. The family requests that all flowers be omitted and memorials be made to the Melvin Hill Perpetual Care Cemetery Fund, 555 Melvin Hill Rd., Columbus, N.C. 28722. Eggers Funeral Home of Boiling Springs served the family of Mrs. Prince.

William H. James
William “Jessie” H. James, 75, of Campobello, died July 4, 2002, at his residence. A native of Pickens County, son of the late Jim H. and Eva Graham James, he was a retired employee of Barnett and Suther Weave Mill. Survivors include four children and one sister. Funeral services were held Sunday at the Wood Mortuary conducted by the Rev. James Price. Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Mobile Meals Service of Spartanburg County, P.O. Box 461, Spartanburg, S.C. 29304. The Wood Mortuary, Greer, was in charge of arrangements.

Lillie T. Wilson
Lillie Taylor Wilson, 85, of Inman, died Thursday, July 4, 2002 at Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care. A native of Spartanburg County, she was the daughter of the late George and Clara Owens Taylor and the widow of James L. Wilson Sr. She retired after 30 years of service from the Belk Department store in Greensboro and was a member of the Magnolia Baptist Church in Greensboro. Survivors include a son, James L. Wilson, Jr. of Asheboro; a sister, Ocenia Evans, of Spartanburg; three brothers, Clayton Taylor of Inman, Roy Taylor of Columbus and Stewart Taylor of Boiling Springs. She was predeceased by a son, Jerry Bruce Wilson. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 6, 2002 at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel conducted by the Rev. Glenn Rusher. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

Clyde E. Rhymer
Clyde Elmer Rhymer, 80, of Campobello, died July 4, 2002, at his home. A native of Spartanburg County, he was the husband of Geneal Ballew Rhymer and a son of the late John Ranson and Velda Burrell Rhymer. He was a member of North Pacolet Baptist Church and New Prospect Masonic Lodge and was retired from Mettler Toledo Scales. He was also a veteran of the Army, having served during World War II. Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Wayne Rhymer and Tommy Rhymer, both of Campobello; two daughters, Freida Wall of Moore and Brenda Carr of Spartanburg; two brothers, Oscar Rhymer of Campobello and John Rhymer of Spartanburg; four sisters, Bertie Edwards of Campobello, Jeanette Jones of Asheville, Lizzie Thomas of Spartanburg, and Louise Tucker of Inman; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday at North Pacolet Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Todd Joiner. Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center Hospice, 120 Heywood Ave., Suite 300, Spartanburg, S.C. 29302 or to North Pacolet Baptist Church, 1175 Melvin Hill Road, Campobello, S.C. 29322. Louise Burdette
Louise P. Burdette, 84, of Landrum, died July 6, 2002 at Magnolia Manor. A native of Pacolet, S.C., she was a daughter of the late E.E. and Alta Lee Minton Petty and was the widow of Clyde J. Burdette. She was a member of Landrum United Methodist Church. She had attended Witestone & Roebuck Secondary Schools and graduated from Spartanburg High School. Survivors include four sons, Ronald Burdette of Landrum, Richard Burdette, Wayne Burdette and Joseph Burdette of High Point; one daughter, Marguerite Cannon of Taylors; two brothers, Paul D. Petty of Charleston, Ralph J. Petty of Spartanburg; one sister, Helen P. Hunter of Spartanburg; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. She was proceeded in death by a sister, Bessie Mae Petty Lawson. Services were held Monday at Petty Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Lutheran Hospice, P.O. Box 1353, Greer, S.C. 29651. Petty Funeral Home, Landrum, was in charge of arrangements.
