  William "Pig" Taylor Jr., 52, of 407 Singletary St. died Thursday at Wilson  
Medical Center. The funeral will be conducted by Bishop Chester Aycock at 2:30  
p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Church of Christ, 4009 Lake Wilson Road. Burial will  
follow in William Chapel Church Cemetery, William Chapel Church Road, Elm City.
  Taylor was employed with Braswell Equipment Company.
  Surviving are one stepson, Ernest Melvin of Wilson; his mother, Thelma Lee  
Eatmon Taylor of Wilson; one brother, James N. Taylor of Wilson; his  
grandmother, Geneva Eatmon of Wilson; and three grandchildren.

from 3-9:30 p.m. with the family receiving friends there from 8:15-9:15 p.m. and

Sadie L. Snipes
  MICRO -- Sadie Lee Snipes, 74, died Sunday. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m.  
Tuesday at Parrish Funeral Home Chapel, Selma. Burial will follow in Selma  
Memorial Gardens.
  Surviving are her husband, Olia Snipes; four sons, Monty Owens of Kenly, Jerry

  ROCKY MOUNT --  Ospy Junius "O.J." Barnes, 81, a native of Wilson, died Friday.  
The funeral was conducted by the Rev.. Connie Button at 3 p.m. Sunday at West  
Haven Presbyterian Church. Burial followed in Rocky Mount Memorial Park.
  Barnes was a retired freight agent for Coastline Railroad. After retirement he  
worked for Superior Dry Cleaners for 20 years.
  Surviving are his wife, Stella Whitfield Barnes; two sons, Ronald Barnes and  
Russ Barnes, both of  Rocky Mount; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

  James William "Bill" Felton, 75, died Wednesday. A graveside service will be  
held at 11 a.m. Friday in Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
  Felton was the former owner/operator of Felton’s Amoco. He was a member of the  
Wilson County Shrine and Sudan Shriners, Mount Lebanon Masonic Lodge 117, Mount  
Lebanon York Rites, the Sudan Monster Trucks and the Wilson Moose Lodge.
  Surviving are his wife, Norma Lewis Felton; a daughter, Dianne F. Stancil of  
Wilson; a son, James Michael Felton of Wilson; two sisters, Estelle Flowers of  
Wilson and Ruth Barnes of Burlington; a brother, Roscoe Felton of Emporia, Va.;  
three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

  Marie Vinson Maynor, 89, formerly of 819 Mercer St., died Monday. The funeral

  She was retired from the United States Air Force as a civil servant.
  Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

  WINSTON-SALEM -- Doris Moore Mullen, 74, a native of Elm City, died Tuesday at  
her home. The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda  
Road Chapel. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park.
  Surviving are her husband, Benjamin F. Mullen; a daughter, Janet M. Stafford

Tilton L. Willcox
May 29, 1925 April 4, 2001
  Lt. Col. Tilton L. Willcox, retired, 75, of Greenville, a native of Wilson,  
died Wednesday at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. The funeral will be held at  
noon Saturday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Burial will follow in Maplewood  
Cemetery, Wilson.
  Willcox served in the U.S. Army, Army Air Corps and the U.S. Air Force. He was  
awarded the Bronze Star medal in 1969.
  Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Janice Higginbotham-Willcox; two daughters,  
Winniford Susan Wheeler of Greensboro and Dr. Sarah Tilton Hudson of Elizabeth  
City; a sister, Cora Grandy Paschal of Columbia, S.C.; and four grandchildren.
  The family will receive friends at Wilkerson Funeral Home, Greenville, Friday  
from 7-9 p.m.

FORMER ELM CITY CHIEF DIES
  ELM CITY -- Former Elm City Police Chief Luther Barnes, 62, died Tuesday.
  Barnes served on Elm City’s police force 20 years, half of them as chief. He  
retired in 1990 due to bad health.
  A 1958 graduate of Charles H. Darden High School in Wilson, Barnes did not go  
into police work until he was 29. He was the first black police officer in Elm  
City.
  "He was one of the guys who could go into the community and it didn’t matter  
which side, black or white, he could defuse any situation just like that," said  
Grady Smith, mayor of Elm City.
  As chief, he trained a number of officers who still work in law enforcement in  
the area.
  "He was a great man," said Sgt. Chip Dorsey of the Wilson County Sheriff’s  
Office. He taught me a lot. He’ll be missed. I don’t think there was a person in  
Wilson County he didn’t know."
  Major Jimmy Tant of the Sheriff’s Office worked with Barnes during his years  
on Elm City’s force.
  "He was the epitome of a small town chief," he said. "He knew everyone, even  
the children, by name. He did community policing before it was politically  
correct."

  Barnes was a retired police officer of Elm City.

and Danny Wright, all of Wilson; one brother, Raleigh S. Barnes of Newark, N.J.;  
16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Edward B. Beasley Jr.
  FOUNTAIN -- Edward Bruce Beasley Jr., 82, of 3400 S. Jefferson St. died  
Thursday at Nash General Hospital, Rocky Mount. The funeral will be conducted by  
the Rev. Harry Edwards, the Rev. John Allen and the Rev. Robert White at 11 a.m.  
Saturday at Fountain Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Queen Anne Cemetery.
  Beasley was a member of Fountain Baptist Church where he was a deacon emeritus  
and had served as chairman of the board of deacons. He was a former Fountain  
town commissioner, had served on the Fountain school board, and was former  
chairman of the board of BB&T of Fountain.
  Surviving are his wife, Grace Smith Beasley; one daughter, Edna Beasley Corn  
of Rocky Mount; one son, Edward Bruce Beasley III of Wilson; one brother, Dr.  
Britton F. Beasley of Kinston; and three grandchildren.

graveside services will be held Sunday in Elmwood Cemetery.

Clinton and Pam Newcomb of Pikeville; one son, Woody Joyner of  Hawaii; two  
sisters, Helen Killette of Goldsboro and Eloise Banker of Tarboro; three

Masonic graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Elmwood Cemetery.
  Bradshaw was a self-employed painter. He was a veteran of World War II and a  
POW.
  Surviving are his wife, Agnes Howell Bradshaw; two sisters, Louise Pope of  
Goldsboro and Margie Caudill of Charlotte; and two brothers, Lawrence Bradshaw  
and Luby Bradshaw, both of Wilson.

  Moore was a member of Friendship Free Will Baptist Church and was a retired  
farmer.

  She was a veteran of World War II having served as 2nd lieutenant in the Army

Williams Chapel Cemetery of Elm City.
  Surviving are six daughters, Thelma Doris Hall of Snow Hill, Annie Morris
Woodard and Rachel Yvonne Perry, both of Elm City, Janice Delores Lewis of
Kenly, Margaret Ruth Winstead of Rocky Mount and Frances Arlene Adams of Wilson;
two sons, Jack Louis Winstead and Richard Dewey Winstead, both of Wilson; 24
granchildren, including three he reared, Jerry Winstead, Shelton Winstead and
Eyvette Farmer; and 29 great-grandchildren.
  The body may be viewed on Saturday from 2-8 p.m. with the family receiving
friends from 7-8 p.m. at King & Darden Funeral Home, and other times at the
residence of his daughter, Annie Woodard, 5731 Rock Quarry Road in Elm City, and

  Hawley was formerly employed at Barnes Motor and Parts of Wilson, and he  
served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Fleming of Morehead City; a son, Donald William Hawley of Greenville; two  
sisters, Gertrude H. Parson of Wilmington and Ruby L. Lancaster of Pikeville;

was a member of Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church, where she served on the  
senior usher board and was a member of the Cedars of Lebanon Tent No. 291 of  
Wilson.
  Surviving are three daughters, Ossie Lee Wyatt of Stone Mountain, Ga., Janet  
Lee Farmer of Atlanta, Ga., and Angela Jean Faulkner of Lumberton; one son,  
Samuel Earl Anthony of Wilson; two sisters, Bea Esther Farmer of Wilson and Anne  
Doris Barnes of New York, N.Y.; two brothers, Moses Applewhite of Saratoga and  
Joseph Applewhite of New York, N.Y.; and six grandchildren.
