CARTHAGE - Ricky A. Spivey, 24, of Old River Road, died Tuesday, March 23, 1999, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage, with the Rev. Greg Newton officiating. Burial will be in West End Cemetery.

He was a native of Moore County and an employee of Premiere Painting Co. in West End.

Surviving are sons, Rickey W. Spivey, Brandon Spivey, both of the home; mother, Sandra Whitaker of Carthage; father, Robert Spivey of Fayetteville; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Zollie Mabe of Ellerbe.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

Robert T. Carter
CLINTON - Robert "Bob" T. Carter, 84, of 309 Carolina Ave., died Tuesday, March 23, 1999, in Sampson Regional Medical Center.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Grove Park Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Michael Shook and the Rev. Robbie Gilbert officiating. Burial will be in Salemburg Cemetery.

He was a native of Sampson County, the widower of Eva Ruth Moore Carter and Cuma J. Bass Carter and a retired building contractor.

Surviving are son, Lynn Carter of Wilmington; stepdaughters, Pat B. Shipp, Faye B. McCullen, Ann B. Starling, Vickie B. Britt, all of Clinton, Kaye B. Bryan of Asheboro; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Royal-Hall Funeral Home, Clinton, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

Fletcher G. Williams
GREENSBORO - Fletcher G. Williams, 76, of 2211 Golden Gate Drive, died Friday, March 19, 1999, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at C.C. Hodges Funeral Service, Asheboro, with Bishop Harold Williams officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County and a U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving is brother, Albert Williams of Rochester, N.Y.

The family will be at the funeral home 1-1:30 p.m. prior to the service.

SILER CITY - Jackie Aubrey Jones, 51, of Jacksonville, Fla., died Monday, March 22, 1999, at St. Luke Hospital, Jacksonville, Fla.

A graveside service will be held at Sandy Branch Baptist Church Cemetery, Bear Creek.

He was a native of Bear Creek and a member of Sandy Branch Baptist Church.

Surviving are sons, Derrick Jones of Greensboro, Gregory Jones of Asheboro; daughters, Jennifer Jones, Frances Jones, both of Greensboro; sisters, JoAnne J. Brady of Asheboro, Janie Hawker of Grantsville, Utah; brother, Luther Jones of Bear Creek; three grandchildren.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-8:30 p.m. Friday.

Diane S. Taylor
DENTON - Diane Smith Taylor, 56, of Stokes Road, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton.

Walter L. Haynes
CARTHAGE - Walter L. Haynes, 63, of 1131 Old River Road, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Emanuel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Eugene Ussery. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Surry County and retired from Proctor-Silex Inc.

Surviving are wife, Betty W. Haynes; daughters, Eva Stanley, Joyce Taylor, Linda McKay, Renee Wood, all of Carthage; son, Gary Haynes of Aberdeen; sisters, Lillian Ashburn of Pilot Mountain, Maggieleane Upchurch of Mt. Airy, Elsie Gwyn of Westfield; brothers, William Haynes of Tobaccoville, Ray Haynes of Westfield; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

The family will be at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage, 7-9 p.m. Friday, other times at the home.

Myrtle C. Beck
Myrtle Frances Chrisco Beck, 72, of 3526 Buffalo Ford Road, Asheboro, died Thursday, March 25, 1999, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Mountain of Faith Christian Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Thurman Williams officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Alabama, a member of the adult Sunday School class at her church and a homemaker.

Surviving are son, Howard Alton Beck Jr. of Asheboro; half brother, Clarence Chrisco of Robbins; two grand children; five great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home.

Hazel H. McDowell
Hazel Eugenia Hammond McDowell, 80, of 5359 Old N.C. 49, Asheboro, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, at her home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Pleasant Union United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Larry McEntire officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Pearl Lonnie McDowell and attended Pleasant Union United Church of Christ.

Surviving are daughter, Gerrelene M. Walker of Tarboro; son, Maxton McDowell of Asheboro; sister, Mateline Hammond Wilkins of Durham; three grandchildren.

The family will be at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Friday, other times at the home of the son, 5354 Old N.C. 49. Asheboro.

Nell S. Jackson
Nell Spencer Jackson, 98, of Asheboro, died Thursday, March 25, 1999, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. David Surrett, the Rev. Wyatt Hoogkamp and Dr. Mike McClure officiating. Burial will be in Charlotte United Methodist Church Cemetery.

She was the widow of Sam L. Jackson Sr., the oldest member of Sawyersville Wesleyan Church and a former school teacher.

Surviving are son, Sam L. Jackson Jr. of the home; daughters, Helen Moore, Sue Cheek, both of Asheboro; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-8:30 p.m. Friday.

RANDLEMAN - Bobby Lee Harrison Sr., 50, of 7278 Birch Drive, died Thursday, March 25, 1999, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Faith Temple Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Phillip Talton officiating.

He was a native of Hilton, Va., and a driver for Randolph Packing.

Surviving are wife, Dora Marie Harrison of Randleman; sons, Bobby Lee Harrison Jr. of Ayden, James Harrison of Austin, Texas; daughter, Jacquie Dail of Ayden; stepdaughter, Mary Joann Kennedy of Level Cross; stepsons, Phillip Wayne Lunsford, William Blaine Lunsford, both of Randleman, James Conley Lunsford of Bristol, Tenn.; mother, Pearl Harrison of Bristol, Tenn.; brother, Walter Leonard Harrison of Bristol, Tenn.; sister, Anne H. Tallman of Bristol, Tenn.; four grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home Randleman, noon-1:30 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home.

Cleadel G. Pierce
SEAGROVE - Cleadel Garner Pierce, 80, of 6925 Union Grove Church Road, died Thursday, March 25, 1999, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at New Center Christian Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Jimmy Shirlen and the Rev. James Caviness officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County and a homemaker.

Surviving are husband, Rayford H. Pierce of the home; daughters, Norma Ann Clark of Hopewell, Va., Geraldine Hicks, Vickie Brown, both of Seagrove; sons, Harold Pierce, Darrell Pierce, both of Seagrove; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Friday, other times at the home.

Douglas C. Westmoreland
STALEY - Douglas Cleo Westmoreland, 46, of 6788 Willard St., died Thursday, March 25, 1999, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County and a small engine repairman.

Surviving are fiancé, Denise T. Bryant of Staley; mother, Rachel N. Westmoreland of Staley; sons, Bobby Westmoreland of Ramseur, Craig Westmoreland of Morganton; sister, Joyce Layton of Greensboro; brother, Donnie Westmoreland of Staley; grandfather, Wade Nance of Staley; one granddaughter.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Friday, other times at the home of the mother, 6898 Willard Road, Staley.

Diane S. Taylor
DENTON - Diane Smith Taylor, 56, of Stokes Road, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Chris Smith officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Davidson County, a retired school teacher and her father, Olon Smith, died from injuries received in the same automobile accident.

Surviving are husband, Bobby C. Taylor of the home; sons, R. Todd Taylor of Denton, R. Scott Taylor of Albemarle; daughter, Nanette Marie T. Sowers of Welcome; mother, Vada B. Smith of Denton; three grandchildren.

The family will be at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, 7-9 p.m. Friday.

J. Olon Smith
DENTON - J. Olon Smith, 80, of 2238 N.C. 109 South, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Chris Smith and the Rev. Derald Smith officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Davidson County, retired owner and operator of Smith Saw Sales & Service and his daughter, Dianne S. Taylor, died from injuries received in the same automobile accident.

Surviving are wife, Vada Burkhead Smith of the home; brother, Harold Smith of Thomasville; sister, Pecola Biesecker of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, 7-9 p.m. Friday.

Chad L. Kirkman
BENNETT - Chad Lee Kirkman, 16, of 4619 Lewis Brown Road, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, near Bennett.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Harmony Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tom Hill officiating. Burial will be in Sandy Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, a freshman at Eastern Randolph High School and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are mother, Linda Boger Kirkman of Bennett; father, Colvin Lee Kirkman Jr. of Bassett, Va.; sisters, Angela Michele Andrews and Alicia Dawn Kirkman, both of the home; grandparents, Otis Smith Boger of Asheboro and Patricia Kirkman of Bassett, Va.; great-grandparents, Diffie and Olivia Wright of Cedar Falls.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, 7-9 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home.

Mary K. Blalock
BEAR CREEK - Mary Kate Straughn Blalock, 93, of 4728 Devils Tramping Ground Road, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, at Chatham Hospital.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Sandy Branch Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Dee Barrow officiating.

She was a native of Chatham County, the widow of George Dewey Blalock, a homemaker and a member of Meroneys United Methodist Church.

Surviving are sons, Ralph Blalock, John Blalock, Leroy Blalock, all of Bear Creek, Curtis Blalock of Siler City; daughters, Frances Oldham of Robbins, Betty Gonzalez of Goldston, Mary Bayles of Bear Creek; 21 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Friday.

Ralph G. Steed Jr.
ARCHDALE - Ralph Graham Steed Jr., 53, of 305-B Liberty Road, formerly of Robbins, died Thursday, March 25, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Why Not Cemetery near Seagrove, with the Rev. William Bivans officiating.

He was employed by Millers Towing service.

Surviving is a sister, Suzanne Steed Bunnell of Cameron.

The family will be at Kennedy Funeral Home 6:30-8 p.m. Friday.

Danny F. Garner
CAMERON - Danny Fred Garner, 42, died Wednesday, March 24,1999, at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Yates-Thagard Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Moore County and a self-employed truck driver.

Surviving are wife, Alisa F. Garner of the home; daughter, Cassidy D. Garner of the home; mother, Jean Garner of Cameron.

The family will be at Boles Funeral Home and Crematory in Pinehurst 7-9 p.m. Friday.

DeEtte A. Strawbridge
DURHAM - Frances DeEtte Austin Strawbridge, 77, of 75 Forest at Duke Drive, died Thursday, March 25, 1999, at Duke Medical Center.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Grace Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Bob Gray, the Rev. Burke Raper and the Rev. Don Sanders officiating. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery.

She was a native of Hickory, the widow of John Nelson Strawbridge, a member and past president of the Sara Barker Circle of the Kings Daughters, a volunteer in the gift shop of the Forest at Duke and a Sunday School teacher at her church.

Surviving are sons, James Edward Strawbridge of Wilmington and Larry Strawbridge of Durham; sister, Nannie Lou Hedrick of Asheboro; seven grandchildren.

The family will be at Clements Funeral Home, Durham, 7-9 p.m. Friday.

Ola V. Harrell
DUDLEY - Ola Vergil Harrell, 74, of 106 Sleepy Creek Drive, formerly of Asheboro, died March 24, 1999, in the Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Sleepy Creek Chapel.

He was a graduate of Hobgood High School, a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, a graduate of Wake Forest University with a B.S. and of East Carolina University with an M.A. He was supervisor of Elementary Education in Wayne County, principal of Falkland Elementary School near Greenville, Meadow Lane Elementary School in Goldsboro, Asheboro Junior High School and Leland Elementary School in Wilmington. He also served as director of a special federal education program in several colleges in Florida.

Surviving are wife, Lorene Herrin Harrell; sons, Michael Harrell, Terry Harrell and Steve "Buddy" Harrell; brothers, Curtis Harrell and Jimmy Cogdell.

The family will be at Rones Chapel United Methodist Church in Mount Olive 7-9 p.m. Friday.

Memorials may be made to Kitty Askins Hospice Center or to Rones Chapel United Methodist Church.

Roy L. Harris
ROCKINGHAM - Roy Little Harris, 78, of 120 Luther St., formerly of Cedar Falls, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, in Hampstead.

Graveside service with military honors will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Randolph Memorial Park with the Rev. Charles Spivey and the Rev. Timothy Strider officiating.

He was a native of Randolph County, formerly employed by Jordan Spinning in Cedar Falls, retired from Glen Raven Mills in Rockingham and the widower of Helen Strider Harris.

Surviving are sons, Terry Lee Harris of Pensacola, Fla., and Eddie Harris of Hampstead; daughters, Michelle Harris of Laurel Hill and Patricia Cox of Asheboro; brother, Don Harris of Denton; sister, Claudia Jennings of Cedar Falls; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Marks Funeral Home in Rockingham 6-8 p.m. Friday and at Randolph Memorial Park one hour before the service.
