Reo Huston Cagle, 62, of 270 McCranford Road, Asheboro, died Saturday, March 27, 1999, at Wesley Long Community Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Boyd Byerly and the Rev. Ben Chavis officiating.

He was a native of Montgomery County and retired from Stedman Corp.

Surviving are wife, Bertha Chriscoe Cagle of the home; daughters, Peggy Jones, Sueann Beane, both of Asheboro; sons, Jesse Cagle, Timmy Cagle, Jimmy Cagle, all of Asheboro; sister, Ann Gilmore of Greensboro; brothers, Dewey Cagle, Austin Cagle, both of Asheboro; five grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Monday, other times at the home.

Jesse E. Cheek
SEAGROVE - Jesse Elbert Cheek, 90, of 5179 Sercy Road, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, at Asheboro Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, where he was a member. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Surviving are sons, Fletcher Cheek of Goldston, Walter Cheek of Asheboro, Cecil Cheek and Wilton Cheek, both of Pleasant Hill Community, Sylvester Cheek of Ramseur; daughters, Romelia Hairston of Fieldale, Va., Maude Mitchell of Martinsville, Va., Gracie Jackson of Dobbins Heights, Janie Gaymon of Greensboro, Mildred Davis of Asheboro; brothers, Winfred Cheek and Hoover Cheek, both of Ramseur; sister, Mable Watson of Ramseur; 35 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the church 30 minutes prior to the service on Sunday, other times at the home of Janie Gaymon, Sercy Road.

Knotts Funeral Home, Siler City, is in charge of the arrangements.

LIBERTY - Leola A. Johnson, 90, of 234 Liberty Village Apts., died Friday, March 26,1999, at her home.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Monday at Evans Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church.

Surviving are husband, Pearl Ezekiel Johnson of the home; daughters, Victoria Ford of Staley, Gertrude Caviness of Julian, Marie Alston and Annie Lang, both of Greensboro, Mary Banks of Siler City, Regina Buchanan of Durham; sons, Roscoe Johnson of Charlotte, Leroy Johnson, Paul Johnson, both of Staley; sisters, Lois Peoples of Greensboro, Vicie Carter of Siler City; 22 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the church 2:30-3 p.m. Monday.

Farrar Funeral Service, Siler City, is in charge of the arrangements.

Chad L. Kirkman
BENNETT - Chad Lee Kirkman, 16, of 4619 Lewis Brown Road, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, near Bennett.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Harmony Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tom Hill officiating. Burial will be in Sandy Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, a freshman at Eastern Randolph High School and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are mother, Linda Boger Kirkman and her fiance, Greg Pesicka, both of the home; father, Colvin Lee Kirkman Jr. of Bassett, Va.; sisters, Angela Michele Andrews and Alicia Dawn Kirkman, both of the home; grandparents, Otis Smith Boger of Asheboro and Patricia Kirkman of Bassett, Va.; great-grandparents, Diffie and Olivia Wright of Cedar Falls.

Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, is in charge of the arrangements.

Jerry A. Brewer
ROBBINS - Jerry Allen Brewer, 50, of 568 Browns Chapel Church Road, died Friday, March 26, 1999, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Providence Chapel, with the Rev. Ralph Smith Jr. and the Rev. Gary Waisner officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Moore County.

Surviving are wife, Blanche Morgan Brewer of the home; son, Jerry Bryan Brewer of Robbins; daughter, Sherri B. Beane of Robbins; brothers, Jesse Darrell Brewer of Bennett, Jack Garner of Winston-Salem; sisters, Nelda Brewer of Robbins, Jewel Singletary of Seagrove, Barbara Lamer of Newport, N.H.; grandmother, Annie Brewer of Bennett; two grandchildren.

The family will be at Kennedy Funeral Home in Robbins 7-9 p.m. Sunday, other times at the home.

Lillian C. Brown
Lillian Curtis Brown, 90, of 1020 Browers Chapel Road, Asheboro, died Sunday, March 28, 1999, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, where she was a member, with Dr. John S. Rogers officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

She was the widow of former Randolph County Sheriff Lloyd E. Brown. She worked with pre-schoolers for 50 years, played the piano for mission in Dogwood Acres, later organized as Armfield Heights Baptist Church, and for various other groups. She was a member of the W.M.U. and of the Randolph Chapter #210 Order of Eastern Star where she served as organist. She was a member of Westwood Garden Club, the Home Extension and a member of A.A.R.P.

Surviving are daughter, Ernestine Brown of Oak Island; sisters, Mary Wallace of Franklinville, Inez Spence of Asheboro; brother, Dr. John Curtis of Hampstead; two granddaughters; two great-grandchildren.

No visitation is planned.

Joanna S. Hancock
CANDOR - Joanna Steed Hancock, 64, of 503 S. Steed St., died Saturday, March 27, 1999, at FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Candor Cemetery, with the Rev. Mark Lykins officiating.

She was a native of Stanly County, a graduate of Candor High School and of Greensboro College, and received a degree in police science and criminology protective services from Montgomery Technical Institute. She was a member of Candor United Methodist Church, was the first woman in Montgomery County to become a justice of the peace-magistrate and at the time the youngest one in the United States. She had served as a town clerk in Candor, was an assistant terminal manager with Helms Motor Co. in Troy and a counselor with Samarkand Manor. She was a former precinct chairman of the Montgomery County Board of Elections, was chosen as one of the top 10 Young Democrats in the state, won a United Nations distinguished service award in 1975 and an appreciation of service award from the UN in 1976. Her name has appeared in "Who's Who in the South" and "Who's in Law Enforcement."

Surviving are sons, David Hancock and Lee Hancock, both of Candor; brother, Joseph D. "Jody" Steed Jr. of Candor.

The family will be at Briggs-Candor Funeral Home, Candor, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home.

Mamie B. Presnell
Mamie Brown Presnell, 76, of 5770 Ridge Road, Seagrove, died Monday, March 29, 1999, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Union Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ron Terry officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, a homemaker and a member of Whynot Wesleyan Church.

Surviving are husband, Colon M. Presnell; son, Don Presnell of Asheboro; daughter, Sue Voncannon of Asheboro; sisters, Alta Allen of Seagrove, Treva Brown-Garner of Asheboro.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

Glennie H. Adams
MT. GILEAD - Glennie Hough Adams, 86, formerly of Route 1, died Sunday, March 28, 1999, at Windsor House Nursing Center, Rockingham.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Zion United Methodist Church, Mt. Gilead, where she was a member, with the Rev. Jim Harris officiating. Burial will be 3:30 p.m. at Sandy Plains United Methodist Church Cemetery in Wadesboro.

She was a native of Anson County, the widow of Ernest Jerome Adams and a retired employee of Cassie-Cotillion.

Surviving are sons, Harvey W. Adams of Hamlet, Larry A. Adams of Mt. Gilead; daughters, Julia Clark of Troy, Nita Adams of Dunwoody, Ga.; sisters, Ethel Faison and Ora Lewis, both of Middlesex; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at McKeithan Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead, 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home of Julia Clark, 350 Okeewemee Road, Troy.

Alice F. Swaim
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Alice Ferree Swaim, 77, of Covenant Towers, died Saturday, March 27, 1999, at her home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Quay Adams and the Rev. Tom Brittain officiating. Entombment will be at Southeastern Memorial Gardens.

She was a native of Randleman and the widow of Henry Swaim.

Surviving are sons, Roddy Swaim of Murrells Inlet, S.C., Tommy Swaim of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at McMillan-Small Funeral Home, Myrtle Beach, S.C., 6-7 p.m. Tuesday.

Dr. Joseph R. Suggs Sr.
Dr. Joseph Russell Suggs Sr., 77, of 317 Ridgecrest Road, Asheboro, died Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at Clapp's Convalescent Nursing Home.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Mike Jordan and the Rev. David Noyes officiating.

He was a graduate of Lenoir Rhyne College and of the School of Dentistry of the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Va., was a U.S. Army-Air Force veteran where he served as a dentist, and practiced general dentistry in Asheboro for 28 years. He was a member of the Randolph County Dental Society, the N.C. Dental Society and was president of the 3rd District Dental Society. He served on the board of directors and was chairman of the Randolph County Public Health Department, was on the Asheboro City Board of Education, was a life member of Asheboro Masonic Lodge 699 and held a number of offices at his church. He was a Randolph County historian who was instrumental in the restoration of the Female Academy, active in the publication of the "Randolph County Heritage" Vol. 1 and a supporter of the Randolph Room in the Randolph Public Library.

Surviving are wife, Dr. Ann Howard Suggs of the home; sons, Joseph Russell Suggs Jr. of Advance, Richard Howard Suggs and John Reid Suggs, both of Asheboro; daughter, Catherine Gardiner of Stokesdale; brother, David E. Suggs of Asheboro; five grandchildren.

The family will be at the church following the memorial service.

Bud Cox
Jesse Sylvester "Bud" Cox, 81, of 415 Virginia Ave., Asheboro, died Monday, March 29, 1999, at Randolph Hospital.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Randolph Memorial Park, with the Rev. Joe Farlow officiating.

He was a native of Randolph County, a member of Berean Memorial Baptist Church and a retired landscaper.

Surviving are wife, Leona Pierce Cox; sons, Marvin Cox of Seagrove, Ronnie Maness of Asheboro, Roy Cox of Randleman; daughters, Martha Deweese of Nobleton, Fla., Nancy Snyder and Toni Farlow, both of Randleman; sisters, Lorene Johnson, Edna Coble, Evlas McDowell, Esther Meridith, all of Asheboro; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

Hilda B. Allen
LIBERTY - Hilda Brady Allen, 85, of 143 Dameron Ave., died Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at Moses Cone Extended Care Center.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Pleasant Ridge Christian Church in Ramseur, where she was a member. Her body will be donated to the U.N.C. School of Medicine.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of William Fred Allen, a graduate of Ramseur High School, a graduate of Asheville Normal Institute with a B.A. and of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with masters degrees in education and library science. She was a teacher and school librarian in Randolph County Schools for 31 years, a Sunday School teacher, a choir member and a church librarian. She was a member of Weatherly Chapter # 271 of the Eastern Star and Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority.

Surviving are son, J. Michael Allen of Ramseur; sister, Katherine Allen of Greensboro; brother, Gordon Brady Sr. of Ramseur; two grandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, at the church fellowship hall following the service and other times at the home of the son, 1602 Pleasant Ridge Road, Ramseur.

Bear Lanier
DENTON - Ronald "Bear" Lanier, 47, of 6152 Gravel Hill Church Road, died Monday, March 29, 1999, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, with the Rev. Jimmy Walker and the Rev. Claudie Harrison officiating. A graveside service will follow in Gravel Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Jody Harrison and Pastor Arnold Comer officiating.

He was a native of Randolph County, self-employed at Lanier's Sawmill, a 1970 graduate of Farmer High School, a member of the National Guard, coached Little League baseball and girls' softball at Lanier's Field and was president of the Southwestern Randolph Boosters Club.

Surviving are wife, Donna Young Lanier of the home; son, Brian Lanier of Denton; daughters, Keitha Dawn Lanier and Kristen Beth Lanier, both of Denton; parents, Jack H. and Ollie Walker Lanier of Denton; brothers, Harold Lanier, Arnold Lanier and Donald Lanier, all of Denton; sisters, Brenda Hunt and Diane Cook, both of Denton.

The family will be at the funeral home 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Clitus James Hamlett, 75, of 2569 Millboro Road, Lot #9, Franklinville, died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at his home.

Memorial service will be 7 p.m. Friday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Bruce Johnson officiating.

He was a native of Surry County, a member of Glory Bound Baptist Church of Randleman and retired from J.P. Stevens after 35 years.

Surviving are wife, Maxine Wilson Hamlett of the home; daughter, Margie Cox of Franklinville; sons, Clarence James Hamlett of Denton, Charlie Ray Hamlett of Asheboro, Clitus Edward Hamlett of Midlothian, Texas, John Sherman Hamlett of Jacksonville, Fla.; sister, Dora Burcham of Randleman; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.

Ophelia H. Scott, 97, of 351 Railroad St., Asheboro, died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at her home.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Greater St. John Baptist Church, where she was the oldest member, with the Rev. Joseph Kearns officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County.

Surviving are daughters, the Rev. Hortense Jackson and Nannie Scott, both of Asheboro; sons, Joseph Scott of New York, N.Y., David Scott and Sylvester Scott, both of Asheboro, Jessie Scott of Greensboro; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at C.C. Hodges Funeral Service, Asheboro, 7-8 p.m. Friday.

Clayton Littleton Jr.
RANDLEMAN - Clayton Littleton Jr., 64, of 6383 Farley Drive, died Monday, March 29, 1999, at Wesley Long Community Hospital, Greensboro.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Lakeview Memorial Park, Greensboro, with the Rev. Jerry Mills officiating.

He was a native of Jacksonville, employed with Prestige Fabricators Inc. in Asheboro and attended Level Cross Baptist Church.

Surviving are wife, Kathleen Chatman Littleton of Randleman; sons, Jerry Littleton, Billy Highfill, both of Randleman; brother, Robert Littleton of Sophia; three grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, 7-9 p.m. Saturday.

RANDLEMAN - James Jefferson Mercer, 76, of 12016 Baytree Drive, Riverview, Fla., died Sunday, March 28, 1999, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman. Burial will be in Bethany United Methodist Church Cemetery, Franklinville.

He was a native of Perry, Fla., a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a carpenter for a Bridge Construction.

Surviving are wife, Donna Bottoms Mercer of Riverview, Fla.; brothers, W.D. Courtney, Ed Courtney, both of Perry, Fla.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-8 p.m. Friday.

Susan A. Smith
LIBERTY - Susan Ann Smith, 54, died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at Wesley Long Nursing Center.

Memorial service will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty.

She was a member of First United Church of Christ and worked as a nurse with the Randolph County Mental Health Department at the Walker Treatment Center.

Surviving are mother, Dot Smith of Liberty; sister, Jeane Stutts of Liberty; brother, Randy Smith of Liberty.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home of the brother, 142 W. Brower Ave., Liberty.

Lucille H. Carter
DENTON - Lucille Hughes Carter, 91, of East Noel Avenue and formerly of 407 Trail Three, Burlington, died Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at Beverly Healthcare in Thomasville.

Funeral service will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, with the Rev. Mike Motley officiating. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Alamance Memorial Park in Burlington, with the Rev. Sara Elliott officiating.

She was the widow of J. Fletcher Braxton and Rezzie F. Carter, was a member of Davis United Methodist Church in Burlington and was a retired supervisor with Burlington Industries.

Surviving are one grandchild; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, 7:30-9 p.m. Thursday following the service, other times at the home of Jimmy Elliott, 336 Varner St., Denton.
