WILMINGTON - Shirley Batten Bean, 64, of 1909 Elm St., formerly of Carthage, died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Horseshoe Presbyterian Church, Carthage, with the Rev. Ronald Shelton and the Rev. Alex Shelton officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Guilford County and a homemaker.

Surviving are husband, William E. Bean; daughters, Barbara McNeill of Sanford, Shirley Moore of Robbins, Donna Brake and Carol Bean, both of Wilmington; sons, Samuel Bean and William Bean Jr., both of Wilmington; sister, Ruth Shelton of Asheboro; brothers, Jonah Batten, Paul Batten, Charles Batten, all of Biscoe; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

The family will be at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage, 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home of Barbara & Darrell McNeill, 153 Elkin Lane, Sanford.

Katie B. Johnson
RANDLEMAN - Katie Lee Brady Johnson, 86, of 201 Swaim St., died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at the home of her daughter.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Larry Stines officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Tom Johnson, a homemaker and a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Asheboro.

Surviving are daughters, Joann J. Friday and Patsy J. Soloman, both of Randleman; son, Chuck Johnson of Randleman; sisters, Leona Brown of Stanley, Helen Laughlin of Randleman, Ruth Ingold, Marjorie Kracher and Claudine Hunter, all of Asheboro; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the home of Joann Friday, 4554 Bowman Ave., Randleman.

Cosette B. Bullard
SILER CITY - Cosette "Cozy" Michele Beasley Bullard, 43, of 3500 Bonlee-Bennett Road, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Brush Creek Baptist Church, Bear Creek, with the Rev.. J. R. Bouldin officiating. Burial will be in Lee Memory Gardens, Sanford.

She was a native of Guilford County, an administrative assistant with Industrial Metal Products, Aberdeen, and was formerly employed as a dispatcher with the Chatham County Sheriff's Department.

Surviving are sons, Ashley Paul Wilkie, Cody Blake Wilkie and Adam Dakota Bullard, all of Siler City; mother, Odette Defond Beasley of Siler City; sister, Barbara B. Kenworthy of Southern Pines.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

Charlie C. Ellington Sr.
SILER CITY - Charlie Chapin Ellington Sr., 90, of 949-C Piney Grove Church Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at his home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Piney Grove United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Hank Sanders officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Chatham County, retired from Boling Chair Company and was a member of the Bible class at his church.

Surviving are daughter, Patricia E. Lowe of Siler City; son, Charlie C. Ellington Jr. of Siler City; brother, Irvin Ellington of Siler City; four grandchildren; one great-grandson.

The family will be at the home.

RANDLEMAN - Kenneth Frank "South Paw" Nichols, 56, of 4239 Brown Loop, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Cedar Square Friends Meeting, where he was a member, with the Rev. Ben Hurley officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Cedar Square and the retired owner/operator of Frank's Truck.

Surviving are wife, Brenda Yow Nichols of the home; sons, Kenneth M. Nichols of Randleman, Austin Panco Nichols of Ramseur; daughter, Sharon N. Allred of Sophia; sisters, Marjorie Farlow, Emma Jean Zook, Jackie Canoy, all of Cedar Square; seven grandchildren.

The family will be at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, 7-9 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home.

Mildred E. Hinshaw
SILER CITY - Mildred Elizabeth Hinshaw, 81, of 9717 Snow Camp Road, Snow Camp, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at Alamance Regional Hospital, Burlington.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Rocky River Friends Meeting, where she was a member, with the Rev. David Hobson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Chatham County, a homemaker and a member of the Believers Sunday school class.

Surviving are husband, Ross I. Hinshaw of Snow Camp; son, Henry Lee Hinshaw of Snow Camp; sister, Sara Ellen Short of Spring Lake.

Funeral service will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Goldston Baptist Church, Goldston, where she was a member, with the Rev. David Hicks and the Rev. Ronnie Chaney officiating. Burial will be in Goldston Cemetery.

She was a native of Chatham County, the widow of William Jennings Wicker Sr. and a retired seamstress with A. J. Schneierson and Sons, Inc.

Surviving are daughters, Betty W. Cockman of the home, Lou W. Phillips of Bear Creek, Doris W. Brady of Bennett; son-in-law, Buddy Cockman of the home; sister, Lula S. Welch of Reston, Va.; brother, Charles H. Stinson of Bear Creek; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

Frankie P. Grubb
DENTON - Frankie Pierce Grubb, 80, of 1967 Cid Road, Lexington, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at Community General Hospital, Thomasville.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, with the Rev. Gene Little, the Rev. Billy Yates and the Rev. Dwayne Locklear officiating. Burial will be in Pierces Chapel Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

She was a native of Davidson County, a homemaker and attended Pierces Chapel Primitive Baptist Church.

Surviving are husband, Troy Grubb of the home; sons, Darrell Grubb of Lexington, Ronnie Grubb and Wayne Grubb, both of Trinity; daughter, Joyce Cockman of Lexington; brother, Clarence Pierce of Lexington; sisters, Girlie Pierce and Mazie Lanier, both of Lexington; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home.

DENTON - Tina Renee Wallace, 14, of 3300 Richey Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at her home.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Friday at Community Baptist Church, with the Rev. Brian Workman and the Rev. Jeremy Pierce officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Beaufort County, a ninth-grade student at Southwestern Randolph High School and a member of Love Baptist Church in Washington.

Surviving are mother, Ruth Renee Ballew Toler of the home; father, Walton Andrew Wallace of Washington; brothers, Christopher Shane Ballew of Franklinville, Andrew Joseph Wallace of the home; half brother, Walton Andrew Wallace, Jr. of Washington; grandmother, Ruth N. Ballew of Franklinville; grandfather, Joe Edward Ballew of Franklinville.

The family will be at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, 7-9 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home of Pauline Gordon, 3233 Richey Road.

Chestie L. Bryson
ROBBINS - Chestie Lee Bryson, 89, of 239 Sunset Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at the home of her daughter in Hamlet.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Browns Chapel Christian Church, with the Rev. Brady Stephens officiating. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday in Richmond Memorial Park Cemetery, Rockingham.

Surviving are daughters, Jane Allen of Robbins, Joyce Bryson of Hamlet, Penny Garner of Seagrove, Donna Brock of Alabama, Pat Lewis of Carthage; son, Jay Bryson of Robbins; brother, Mina Freeman of Hamlet; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

The family will be at Kennedy Funeral Home, Robbins, 7-9 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home of Larry and Jane Allen, 160 Trail Ridge Road, Robbins.

James H. Robinson
MT. GILEAD - James Henry Robinson, 74, formerly of Mt. Gilead, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at Asheboro Health and Rehab Center, Asheboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Snow Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Michael Patrick officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a World War II veteran.

Surviving are wife, Lillie Smith Robinson of Washington, D.C.; son, Cederic Bowden of Washington, D.C.; brother, Johnny R. Robinson of High Point; sisters, Ann McCullough of High Point, Sarah Robinson of Kernersville, Ida LeGrand and Hazel LeGrand, both of Mt. Gilead.

The family will at be the church 1-2 p.m. Saturday.

McKeithan Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead, is in charge of the arrangements.

Eddie Thomas
CARTHAGE - Eddie "Junior" Thomas, 67, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Emanuel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Eugene Ussery and the Rev. Joseph K. Peters officiating. Burial will be in Cross Hill Cemetery.

He was a native of Lee County, a Korean War veteran and retired from J.P. Stevens in Aberdeen after 20 years.

Surviving are wife, Jeanette Cash Thomas; daughter, Jennifer Thomas Gilmore of Carthage; sons, Eddie Thomas and Danny Thomas, both of Carthage; sister, Ilene T. Fry of Carthage; brother, Willie J. Thomas of Carthage; six grandchildren.

The family will be at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage, 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday.

Lewis H. Dorsett
MT. GILEAD - Lewis Howard Dorsett, 88, of 208 W. Ingram St., died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jim Harris officiating. Burial will be in Sharon Cemetery with full military honors.

He was a native of Thomasville, attended Mt. Gilead High School and was a graduate of Duke University. He was an accountant/controller at United Mills Corp. and Russell-Harvell Hosiery Mill, both in Mt. Gilead, W.R. Bonsal Co. of Lilesville and was a U.S. Army veteran where he received a Bronze Star, the Belgian Fourragere and a European Theater Ribbon with five Battle Stars. He served on the Montgomery County Board of Education, the Board of Directors of the N.C. School Board Association, and received the Raleigh Dingman Award for Outstanding Boardmanship. He was a member of the local Fidelity Bank Board of Directors and director of the Mt. Gilead Museum.

Surviving are wife, Louise Nash Dorsett of the home; daughter, Marion D. Thompson of Lumberton; son, Lewis Howard Dorsett Jr. of Mt. Gilead; brother, Charles H. Dorsett of Mt. Gilead; three grandchildren.

The family will be at McKeithan Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead, 7-9 p.m. Saturday.

BENNETT - Ann Branson Fogleman, 48, of 6913 Brush Creek Road, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Bennett Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Tim Strider officiating.

She was a native of Alamance County and a former nursing assistant.

Surviving are mother, Anna Poston of Yanceyville; brother, James L. Branson of Yanceyville; sisters, Betty Reitzel of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Jackie Hodge of Burlington.

There will be no visitation.

Evangeline D. Stinson
SILER CITY - Evangeline "Van" Davis Stinson, 71, of 965 Delphus Stinson Road, Goldston, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Antioch Baptist Church, Goldston, where she was a member, with the Rev. Ken Harris and Mark Williamson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Chatham County, the widow of Benner H. Stinson Sr., and was retired from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was a member of the Grace Sunday School class and a Sunday School teacher at her church, a graduate of Staley High School and attended Elon College.

Surviving are son, Henry Stinson of Goldston; daughters, Gayle S. Daniel of Siler City, Cindy S. Story of Greenville, Angie S. Eades of Broadway; brothers, Atlas Davis, Jack Davis and Clyde Davis, all of Siler City; sisters, Maxine D. Langley of Staley, Dot D. McPherson of Siler City; three grandchildren.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home.

ASHEBORO - Kenneth Wayne Bullins, 54, of 830 Sunset Ave., Asheboro, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro. Burial will be in Smyrna Grove Community Church Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, the widower of Linda Jennings Bullins, a former employee of Bryant Electric and was formerly in the U.S. Army Reserves.

Surviving are daughters, Ginger Harrold of North Wilkesboro, Candie Lee Posey and Tina Lynn Julian, both of High Point; son, Kenneth Alan Bullins of Asheboro; mother, Glennie McKay Bullins of Asheboro; brothers, David Bullins and Mark Bullins, both of Asheboro; five grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Friday.

Jane H. Armfield
GREENSBORO - Jane Harris Armfield of 510 Country Club Drive, died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, where she was a member.

She was a native of Reidsville, the widow of Britt Millis Armfield, a deacon, elder, and trustee, and Sunday School, Bethany and Bible Circle teacher, all at her church. She was a former president of the Women of the Church, the first woman moderator of the North Carolina Synod of the Presbyterian Church, USA and a trustee of the Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, Va.

She attended Salem College, was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where she received a masters and an honorary doctorate degree and served on the boards of Salem, Davidson and Peace colleges, Cone Hospital, North Carolina Memorial Hospital, Greensboro Preservation Society, Roanoke Island Historical Association and Children's Home Society of North Carolina. She was a former president of the Family Service Agency, UNC-G Excellence Foundation, Friends of the Library, Musical Arts Guild, and the Weatherspoon Art Gallery. She was a founding member and board member of the Greensboro Symphony, where she received the Barbara Cone Award, was a founding member and first and Honorary President of the Greensboro Opera Company, and a member of the N.C. Society of the Colonial Dames of America, the Rachel Caldwell Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the North Carolina Herb Society, and a member of the Greensboro Junior League. She was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, the Community Arts Award from the Altrusa Club, the Jane Armfield Award established by the Greensboro Opera Company, the Alumna Service Award from Salem College, the Brotherhood Award from the Greensboro Chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews and was a Greensboro Woman of the Year.

Surviving is sister, Lou H. Tucker of Greensboro.

The family will be at the home Thursday.

Stella R. Dunlap
ROBBINS - Stella Rouse Dunlap ,86, of 732 Dan Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 4 p.m. Saturday at Union Grove Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Ron Copple and the Rev. Grady Blakley officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Moore County and was retired from Luck's in Seagrove.

Surviving are daughters, Esther Hundley of Robbins, Swannie Dunlap of Eagle Springs; sons, Robert Dunlap of Hamlet, Wendell Dunlap of Bennett, Ray Dunlap of Robbins; grandson, Earl Ray Hundley with whom Mrs. Dunlap lived; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Joyce-Brady Funeral Home, Bennett, 6-8:30 p.m. Friday.

Claude Campbell
VASS - Claude "Albert" Campbell, 79, died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2000, at his home.

Memorial service will be 7 p.m. Friday at The House of the Lord Church. Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the church Cemetery, with the Rev. Ray Jennings officiating.

He was a native of Moore County and pastor of The House of the Lord Church.

Surviving are wife, Laura Ring Campbell; daughters, Bonnie C. Marion of Cameron, Phyllis Ann Blanchard of Sanford; sisters, Lois Ring of Lakeview, Alice Oakley, Shirley Blackman, both of Cameron; brothers, Howard Campbell, Marvin Campbell, Jimmy Campbell, all of Cameron, Ervin Campbell of Virginia; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.
