COLUMBIA, S.C. - Howard Joseph Christley Jr., 72, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000.

There will be no service.

He was a native of Draper, a U.S. Navy veteran, a 1952 graduate of Indiana Technical College and was retired from Southeastern Construction Co. as an electrical engineer.

Surviving are wife, Doris Woodmency Christley; son, Joseph E. Christley of Atlanta, Ga.; daughters, Karen Hanner of Irmo, Dr. Jeryl C. Jones of Blacksburg, Va.; sister, Barbara C. Loyd of Asheboro; stepsisters, Dorothy Pettigrew of Eden, Louise Squires of Mebane; two granddaughters.

Dunbar Funeral Home, Columbia, S.C., is in charge of the arrangements.

Lula M. Scott
ASHEBORO - Lula Mae "Goodie" Scott, 72, of 477 Scott Farm Road, Asheboro, died Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, at her home.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Oaklawn Cemetery, with Dr. Ron Hamilton officiating.

She was a native of Moore County and a homemaker.

Surviving are husband, Lacy Scott Sr. of the home; son, Lacy Scott Jr. of Asheboro; daughter, Trudy S. Lanier of Asheboro; sisters, Patty Williams and Geraldine Garner, both of Robbins; three grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

Farrell Garner
SEAGROVE - Farrell Garner, 72, of 6965 Circle Road, died Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at New Center Christian Church, with the Rev. Jimmy Shirlen and the Rev. Melvin Morton officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County and a retired logger.

Surviving are wife, Maie Maness Garner of the home; sons, Alton Garner and Garrett Garner, both of Seagrove; daughters, Judy Britt of Candor, Cindy Garner of Robbins; brothers, Lloyd Garner and Howard Garner, both of Seagrove, Amen Garner of Asheboro; sister, Mavine Yow of Robbins; 1I grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Joyce-Brady Funeral Home, Bennett, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

Susan R. Parks
BURLINGTON - Susan Dail Ross Parks of 2714 W. Front St., #C-4, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Asheboro City Cemetery, with the Rev. Arthur Ross III officiating.

She was a former member of the Eastern Conference of the United Methodist Church, the Ladies Medical Auxiliary, Girl Scouts of America, and was a 1972 delegate to the Democratic National Convention.

Surviving are husband, John Parks of the home; daughter, Lisa B. Pennington of Elon College; sons, Jeff Bulla of Plano, Texas, Ross Bulla of Denver; stepson, John R. Parks Jr. of Raleigh; stepdaughter, Mary Martha Parks of Fairfax, Va.; two grandchildren.

The family will be at the home of the daughter, 206 Arbor Drive, Elon College, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, and other times at the home. The family will also be at the Ross family home, 139 S. Main St., Asheboro, 1-2:30 p.m. Thursday.

TROY - Opal Sills Hunsucker, 76, of Westwood Apartments, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Liberty Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Billy Dennis officiating.

She was a native of Davidson County, the widow of Johnny Hunsucker, and a homemaker. She was employed with City Laundry in Troy and attended Liberty Hill Baptist Church.

There are no immediate survivors.

The family will be at Briggs Funeral Home, Troy, 1:30-2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Altheola Baldwin
CANDOR - Altheola Baldwin, 80, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Belford Missionary Baptist Church, Jackson Springs. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Surviving are brothers, Robert H. Bennett and George Artis Bennett, both of Jackson Springs.

The family will be at the church 1-3 p.m. Wednesday.

EAGLE SPRINGS - Steven Wayne Quick, 17, of Poor Boy Lane, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, in West End from injuries received after being struck by an automobile.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of West End, with the Rev. Luke McKay and the Rev. Lary Wells officiating. Burial will be in West End Cemetery.

He was a native of Montgomery County and employed with Premier Paint Co.

Surviving are mother, Betty Quick of Eagle Springs; father, Eddie Lee Quick of Farmer; brothers, Daniel Owens of Sanford, Eddie Thomas Quick of Asheboro, Eddie Lee Quick Jr. of Virginia; sisters, Katina Quick and Crystal Quick, both of Virginia.

The family will be at Briggs-Candor Funeral Home, Candor, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home of the mother on Poor Boy Lane, Eagle Springs.

Vernon L. Alsobrook
SALISBURY - Vernon Lester "Speedy" Alsobrook, 38, of 108 Estate Lane, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, of injuries received in an automobile accident.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Chestnut A.M.E. Zion Church, Mt. Gilead, where he was a member, with the Rev. Tyrone Rigsby officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Montgomery County, an employee of Fieldcrest Cannon in Salisbury and a 1981 graduate of West Montgomery High School.

Surviving are mother, Mary Helen Pemberton Alsobrook of Mt. Gilead; sisters, Sharon A. LeGrande, Sonji A. Thomas, Pamela Alsobrook, Anya Alsobrook, all of Mt. Gilead; half sister, Dorothy Davis of Mt. Gilead; brothers, James Wallace Alsobrook of Mt. Gilead, Willis Alsobrook of Robbins; grandmother, Ollie Mae Pemberton.

Harris Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead, is in charge of the arrangements.

Otis B. McClintock
CLIMAX - Otis Beauford McClintock, 87, formerly of Climax, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at Wesley Long Nursing Center.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, with the Rev. Lynn Cash officiating. Burial will be in Gilmore Memorial Park, Julian.

He was a native of Randolph County, the widower of Martha Teague McClintock, a retired farmer and construction worker. He attended Bethel United Methodist Church near Red Cross.

Surviving are son, Billy Ray McClintock of Greensboro; daughter, Nell Blankenship of Oak Ridge; sister, Jewel Barker of Randleman; brother, Herbert McClintock of Greensboro; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 6:30-8 p.m., Monday; other times at the home of Billy Ray McClintock, 3741 Williams Dairy Road, Greensboro.

Sandra K. Woodell
BEAR CREEK - Sandra K. Woodell, 49, of 199 Pasture Lane, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at her home.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Monday at Fellowship Baptist Church, Siler City, with the Rev. Robert A. Griffith officiating. Burial will be in Rives Chapel Baptist Cemetery, Siler City.

She was a native of Hanover, Va., and was employed with Palm Harbor Mobile Homes.

Surviving are husband, Timothy C. Woodell of Bear Creek; son, James Russell Brooks of Siler City; daughter, Theresa M. Brooks of Siler City; one granddaughter.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Sunday, other times at the home of Theresa M. Brooks, 302 W. Cardinal St., Siler City.

Leon Briggs
CAMERON - Leon "Sam" Briggs, 66, of Cameron, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Cypress Presbyterian Church cemetery with the Rev. Richard Rodda officiating.

He was a native of Moore County and a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Surviving are wife, Mary Walsh Briggs; daughters, Jackie Tyner of Raleigh, Michele Ashbaugh of Level Cross; son, Brian Briggs of Broadway; sisters, Catherine Hearne of Carthage, Viola Kirk of Aberdeen; brother, Paul Briggs of Cameron; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Shirley R. Needham
ABERDEEN - Shirley Ann Rich Needham, 64, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at Duke University Medical Center, Durham.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Southern Pines, where she was a member, with Pastor David Keck and Scott Homesley officiating. Burial will be in Bethesda Cemetery.

She was employed by BB&T, a member of the Aberdeen Garden Club, vice-president of the Aberdeen Civic Club, and a member of Friends of The Postmasters House.

Surviving are husband, Charles T. Needham; son, Dean Smith of Aberdeen; daughter, Cindy Gibson of Rockingham; sisters, Ruby Hunsucker, Frances Roberts, both of Asheboro; four grandchildren.

The family will be at Boles Funeral Home, Pinehurst, 7-9 p.m. Monday.

ASHEBORO - James Reece Brantley, 86, of 2715 S. Fayetteville St., Asheboro, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Amity Hills Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Barry Wall, the Rev. Harold Parker and the Rev. Dan Neely officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County and was retired from El Ranch Woodworking Shop.

Surviving are wife, Molene T. Brantley of the home; daughters, Louise Cole, Betty McMillan, Jo Ann Cranford, Mary Ludlum, all of Asheboro; son, Robert Yow of Asheboro; sisters, Bonnie Robbins of Asheboro, Ruby Dunn of Hampton, Va.; nine grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 18 great- grandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Cranford, 1625 Cedar Grove Road, Asheboro.

Isaac R. Messer
ASHEBORO - Isaac Richard Messer, 78, of Asheboro Health & Rehabilitation Center, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at Randolph Hospital.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Tennessee.

He was a native of Knoxville, Tenn., and formerly employed with Spindale Cotton Mill in Spindale.

Surviving are son, Ralph Richard Messer of Morgantown, W. Va.; daughters, Susan Wright of Asheboro, Lisa Ann Hefner of Statesville; sister, Annie Brooks of Gastonia; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at 732 McDermott St., Asheboro.

Carl M. Hanner
JULIAN - Carl M. Hanner, 68, of 2433 N.C. 62 East, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Pleasant Union United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Dave Cash officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Guilford County, a former member of the choir and was on various committees at his church. He was employed at Frazier Sales which later became Climatic Corporation, where he retired as the District Service Manager and was a former member of the Julian Lions Club.

Surviving are wife, Mary Lou Keck Hanner of the home; daughters, Karen Hinson of Wingate, Robin Love of Monroe; brother, Jack Hanner of Clifton Forge, Va.; sister, Janet Hanner of Climax; four grandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

CAMERON - Shirley Yvonne Latham Hicks, 33, of 331 Treebark Lane, died at her home.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Huldah Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Bucky Davis officiating.

She was a native of Montgomery County and formerly employed with Eastman Hosiery in Biscoe.

Surviving are sisters, Hope Brim of Asheboro, Cynthia Freeman of Troy; brothers, Tommy Hunter Jr. and Jerome Latham, both of Asheboro, Craig Latham of Troy; daughters, Bridgette Morton and Codie Morton, both of Asheboro; son, Alex Morton of Asheboro.

The family will be at the home of Hope Brim, 4069 Happy Hollow Road, Asheboro.

WEST CALDWELL, N.J. - Frances Pauline B. Holland, 91, of West Caldwell, N.J., died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at her home.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Oaklawn Cemetery, Asheboro.

She was a native of Asheboro, the widow of Charles L. Holland and had attended Women's College for business. She was employed with Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Company, Newark, N.J., the Universal Credit Company, New York, N.Y., owned and operated Pauline B. Holland Real Estate in Caldwell, N.J., and was a member of the West Essex Multiple Listing System, Inc. and West Essex Board of Realtors. She had also worked for D.E.C. Somers Realty and Van Sant and McLean in West Caldwell, the Specht Agency of Cedar Grove and was retired from Mitchell & McKenna. Inc. of Caldwell, N.J. She was on the West Caldwell Beautification Committee, Garden Club of West Caldwell, Women's Club of Caldwell, had served on the County Committee and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Caldwell.

Surviving are daughters, Barbara Stanton of Burlington, Susan Holland of West Caldwell, N.J., Sally Everson of Tunkhannock, Pa., Beverly Pryor of Caldwell, N.J.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

She was a native of Randolph County and a homemaker.

ASHEBORO - Viola Mae Ingram McDowell, 69, of 121 Apt. B N. Randolph Ave., Asheboro, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Timothy Poindexter and Capt. Ken Oakes officiating. Burial will be in South Plainfield Friends Meeting cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, a homemaker, a member of Sunset Avenue Church of God, and attended the Salvation Army Church.

Surviving are husband, Allison "Bobby" McDowell of Asheboro; daughters, Betty Jean Thompson of Denton, Barbara Ann Beasley of White Lake, Judy Ann McDowell of Asheboro; sons, Billy Ray McDowell and Johnny Lynn McDowell, both of Asheboro; sister, Shelby Jean Hill of Asheboro; brother, Billy Ingram of Mt. Gilead; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home.
