BENNETT - Leta Hammer Jones, 90, of SunBridge Nursing Home, formerly of Bennett, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at SunBridge in Siler City.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Pleasant Grove Christian Church, with the Rev. Thurman Williams and the Rev. Tom Hill officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County and a homemaker.

Surviving are brother, Ivey Hammer Jr. of Ramseur; sister, Dessie Teague of Ramseur.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday.

Joseph P. Koch
TROY - Joseph Peter Koch, 74, of 193 Roslyn Road, died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at his home.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

He was a native of Lebanon, Pa., he attended Wake Forest University where he was a football and basketball player, was the 1952 Most Valuable Player for football in the Southern Conference League and was a member of the South squad in the Miami Shrine Bowl. He played professional football for the Chicago Bears, Philadelphia Eagles and the Montreal Allouettes, was a member of First Baptist Church of Troy, a World War II U.S. Marines Corps veteran and a retired personnel director with Russell Hosiery Mill, Inc.

Surviving are wife, Norma Lattimore Koch of the home; daughters, Nicole Koch of Troy, Adeena K. East of Concord, Kimberly Praser of Cumming, Ga.; son, Michael Eugene Koch of Biscoe; mother, Eva Koch of Lebanon, Pa.; sisters, Mary Peffley, Sandra Gratson, Susan Loraw, all of Lebanon, Pa., Lee Webster of Bedford, Va., Eva McCabe of North Arlington, N.J., Theresa Fallon of Bayonne, N.J.; six grandchildren.

Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Troy, is in charge of the arrangements.

Ina H. Moore
GRAHAM - Ina Harris Moore, 89, of 227 Guthrie St., formerly of Oak Creek Retirement Center, Burlington, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at her home.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Shiloh Presbyterian Church, Burlington, where she was a member, with the Rev. Suzanne Shoffner officiating. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery.

She was a native of Hope Mills and the widow of Seward L. Moore.

Surviving are daughters, Brenda Hope of Charlotte, Cathy Martin of the home; sister, Kathleen Wiser of Chevy Chase, Md.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Rich & Thompson Funeral Home, Graham, 3-5 p.m. Sunday, other times at the home.

Josie B. Moore
DALLAS, Texas - Josie Briley Moore, 91, of 9728 Champa Drive, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, Texas.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Gene McBride officiating. Burial will be in Macclesfield Cemetery.

She was a native of Nash County, the widow of both Oscar O. Briley and K. Frank Moore, and was a homemaker.

Surviving are daughters, Patricia Briley of Rye, N.Y., Eleanor Briley of Dallas, Texas, Bonnie Deaton of Hendersonville; stepsons, Raymond Moore of High Point, William Moore of Springfield, Va.; sister, Rachel Carpenter of Holly Hill, S.C.; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter.

The family will be at the funeral home 9:30-11 a.m., prior to the service on Wednesday.

Garland J. Luck
ASHEBORO - Garland James Luck, 94, of Asheboro, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Randolph Hospital.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Spoon's Chapel UCC Cemetery, with the Rev. Larry McEntire and the Rev. David Hunt officiating.

He was a native of Randolph County, the widower of Lula Hoover Luck, he attended Spoon's Chapel United Church of Christ, was retired from Lucas Furniture and was a farmer.

Surviving are daughter, Shelby Johnston of Asheboro; one granddaughter.

The family will be at the home of the daughter, 1758 Iron Mountain Road, Asheboro.

Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, is in charge of the arrangements.

SEAGROVE - James Owen Akers, 71, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, Gretna, Va., with the Rev. Clyde Crowder officiating. Burial will be in Carl O. Moran Memorial Garden, Gretna, Va.

He was a native of Pittsylvania County and a retired employee of the steel mills in Cleveland, Ohio.

Surviving are sons, Jimmy Akers, Steve Akers, Robert Akers, all of Richmond, Va., Ronnie Dunford of Knoxville, Tenn., Jamie Akers of Asheboro; stepsons, Jerry Clay of Seagrove, Jimmy Clay of Rustburg, Va.; stepdaughters, Geraldine Conley of Manassas, Va., Judy Clay of Rustburg, Va.; brothers, Delano "D.B." Akers of Nathalie, Va., Leroy Akers of Asheboro, Paul Akers of Clayton; sisters, Fleecy Barrett and Rebecca Fancher, both of Franklinville, Marie Akers of Asheboro, Barbara Duty of Dallas, Sylvia Akers of Kentucky; 24 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

ARCHDALE - Hazel Jester Skeen, 77, of 4817 Roby Drive, died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston-Salem.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Poplar Ridge Friends Meeting, with the Rev. Randal A. Quate officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, was retired from Henredon Furniture Industries, and she attended Poplar Ridge Friends Meeting.

Surviving are husband, Paul Charles Skeen of the home; daughter, Phyllis Renn of Archdale; son, Perry Skeen of Thomasville; brother, Austin Jester of Asheboro; sisters, Mabel Brown of High Point, Rita Presnell, Betty Jean Hussey, Glenda Brim, all of Asheboro; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two stepgrandchildren.

Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, is in charge of the arrangements.

CARTHAGE - Laney "Ed" Garner, 79, of 4064 Vass-Carthage Road, died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Greg Newton, the Rev. Darrell Garner and the Rev. David Reynolds officiating. Burial will be in Yates-Thagard Baptist Church Cemetery, Whispering Pines.

He was a native of Moore County and a retired carpenter.

Surviving are wife, Ruth Garner; daughter, Brenda Douglas of Carthage; sons, Jerry Garner of Carthage, Herman Patterson of Robbins; stepdaughter, Mary Ann Williams of Pinehurst; stepsons, Johnny Chisholm and Duncan Chisholm, both of Aberdeen, Ronnie Chisholm of Pinehurst; sisters, Louise McNeill and Mae Wicker, both of Carthage; 19 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage, 7-9 p.m. Monday, other times at the home.

Dwaine S. Hodgin
ASHEBORO - Dwaine Sidney Hodgin, 78, of 1002 Iron Mountain Road, Asheboro, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at his home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Holly Spring Friends Meeting, Ramseur, where he was a member, with the Rev. Leslie Winslow and the Rev. Wayne Eller officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, the widower of Mildred Gattis Edgerton Hodgin, a graduate of Ramseur High School and a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was a farmer, a rural mail carrier and a member of National Rural Letter Carriers Association. He taught clockmaking at Randolph Community College and Sandhills Community College, was a member of the National Association of Watch & Clock Collectors Inc. and also attended Sunset Avenue Church of God.

Surviving are wife, Virginia Souther Hodgin of the home; daughters, AnnaRae Hodgin of Ramseur, Darnell H. Garner of Denton; brothers, James Hodgin of Asheboro, Waldo Hodgin of Murietta, Calif.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home and also at the home of AnnaRae Hodgin, 5977 Buffalo Ford Road, Ramseur.

ASHEBORO - Benjamin Harvey Beck, 89, of SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation for Siler City, formerly of Asheboro, died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at SunBridge.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, with the Rev. Tim Fonner officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, the widower of Mamie Lawson Beck, was retired from the U.S. Postal Service and was a member of Russell's Grove Baptist Church.

Surviving are brother, Curtis Beck of Siler City; sisters, Mildred Beck of Seagrove, Clatie Beck of High Point.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home of Renae Dotson, 373 Luck Road, Asheboro.

George E. Saulsgiver
STALEY - George Edward Saulsgiver, 80, of 5855 Willard Road, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at the Evergreens in Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Grace Lutheran Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Sam Shores officiating. Burial will be in Staley Cemetery.

He was a native of Pleasantville, Pa., and a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are wife, Eleanor Mae Saulsgiver of the home; daughter, Dianne Connick of Las Vegas, Nev.; son, George E. "Tyke" Saulsgiver of Guys Mills, Pa.; half-sister, Virginia Black of Oil City, Pa.; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday.

Alma G. Elkins
GREENSBORO - Alma Greene Elkins, 89, of Beverly Health Care in Greensboro died Sunday, April 8, 2001.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Little Pine Church of the Brethren in Ennice.

She was a native of Sparta, retired from Hanes Hosiery Mill in High Point and was a member of Green Street Baptist Church.

Surviving are son, Bill L. Hall of Napa, Calif.; sisters, Bea Nance of Asheboro, Ola Meyer of Brandenton, Fla.; five grandchildren.

Harold C. Davis Funeral Home, High Point, is in charge of the arrangements.

Dora M. Bowden
MT. GILEAD - Dora Mae Bowden, 94, died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at her home.

Funeral service was 11 a.m. March 23 at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Montgomery County, the widow of Laurence Bowden, was a member of the usher board and Missionary Circle at her church and was a member of Oak Ridge Chapter 547.

Surviving are sons, Bobby L. Bowden and Billy Bowden, both of Mt. Gilead; daughters, Marine McCoy, Doris Cole and Joanne Leake, all of Mt. Gilead; brother, Leroy Colsten of Monroe; sister, Grace Evans of Union, N.J.

Kearns & Son Funeral Service, Troy, was in charge of the arrangements.

Rebecca R. Murphy
ROBBINS - Rebecca Allen Rowell Murphy, 42, of 2127 Spies Road, died Monday, April 9, 2001, at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Browns Chapel Christian Church, with the Rev. Brady Stephens and the Rev. Leonard Ross Moore officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was employed at Autumn Care of Biscoe.

Surviving are husband, Louis Michael Murphy of Biscoe; daughters, Victoria Rowell and Bobbi Jean Murphy, both of Eagle Springs; sisters, Brenda Dunlap of Graysville, Ga., Joyce Garner of Seagrove, Sue Callicutt of Robbins; one grandson.

The family will be at Phillips Funeral Home, Star, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

CARTHAGE - Bryant Alexander "Alex" Childress, 3 days old, of 309 Stanton Hill Road, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at The Women's Hospital in Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Carbonton United Methodist Church, Carbonton, with the Rev. Buck Frye and the Rev. Steven Batts officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Surviving are father, William Jay Childress of Carthage; mother, Kathleen Chapman Childress of Carthage; brother, Matthew Justin Childress of the home; grandparents, Gary Chapman, Katherine Chapman, both of Greensboro, Shirley C. Smith of Eastover, S.C.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

David W. Moore
ASHEBORO - David W. Moore, 58, of 156 E. Academy St., Asheboro, formerly of Bristol, Va., died Monday, April 9, 2001.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Raleigh.

He was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran.

Surviving are sons, Andy Moore and David Allen Moore; mother, Ruth Moore; brother, James Edward Moore of Asheboro; sisters, Brenda Hill and Rebecca Muraszewski, both of Asheboro, Jeanette Wyatt of Bristol, Va.; three grandchildren.

RANDLEMAN - Shigeko Heddi Ariz, 75, of 5600 Rolling Meadows Road, died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman. Burial will be in Gilmore Memorial Park.

She was a native of Tokyo, Japan, the widow of Alexander Delizo Ariz, and was an accounting clerk for Shimaya Shoten in Hawaii.

Surviving are David Masakazu Ariz of Edina, Minn., Wallace Masamori Ariz of Orange, Calif., Gary Masaharu Ariz of Honolulu, Hawaii, Eugene Masami Ariz of Lusby, Md., Vincent Lee Masaki Ariz of Fresno, Calif.; daughter, Leah Naomi A. Payne of Randleman; brothers, Masakuni Hayashi, Masaaki Hayasgi, both of Tokyo, Japan; sisters, Takako Namiki, Kimiko Takahasi and Masae Hayashi, all of Tokyo, Japan, Aiko Ewing of Beeville, Texas; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

The family will be at the funeral home noon-2 p.m. Saturday.

RAMSEUR - Texie Jones Mace, 90, of 511 Ramseur Lake Road, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at her home.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Jordan Memorial United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Mary Miller and the Rev. Justus McKeel officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Knoll Cemetery.

She was a native of Chatham County, the widow of Eugene V. Mace and was retired from Staley Hosiery Mill.

Surviving are daughter, Barbara York of Ramseur; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the home.

Timothy E. Kearns
STALEY - Timothy Earl Kearns, 41, of 854 Shady Grove Church Road, died Monday, April 9, 2001, at Duke Medical Center in Durham.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, with the Rev. Larry Martin officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a native of Randolph County, a machinist and a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church.

Surviving are mother, Marie Edwards Kearns of Staley; sister, Kathy Montgomery of Troutman; son, Kevin E. Kearns of Staley.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the home.

Kathleen R. Pruitt
GREENSBORO - Kathleen Reynolds Pruitt, 92, of 5137 Liberty Road, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at her home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Tabernacle United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Sidney Lanier officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Guilford County, a graduate of Pleasant Garden High School and Guilford College, the widow of G. Robert Pruitt Jr. and a member of the United Methodist Women.

Surviving are daughters, Margaret Liming of Cliffwood Beach, N.J., Libby Wright of Venice, Calif.; son, George Robert Pruitt III of Kennesaw, Ga.; sisters, Bertha Reynolds, Janette Reynolds, Lois Whitley, all of Greensboro, Frances Fields of Monroe City, Mo.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.
