Norman G. Hines
WILMINGTON - Norman Garland Hines, 59, of 2121 Van Buren St., died Friday, July 27, 2001.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Andrews Mortuary, Wilmington, with the Rev. Bill Spencer and the Rev. Margaret Hockett officiating. Masonic Rites will be by Wilmington Lodge 319 A.F. & A.M. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

He was a native of Wilmington, a Freemason, and a member of Wilmington Lodge #319. He was a former member, Past Master and treasurer and certified lecturer of St. John's Lodge #1 in Wilmington, a 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason who served as presiding officer of all four bodies, and a member of Cape Fear Chapter 346, Order of the Eastern Star. He was retired from the City of Wilmington Development Services Department as a construction specialist, licensed by the State of North Carolina as a general contractor and a home inspector, and previously worked for the office of Saline Water Research Test Facility at Wrightsville Beach. He previously served in the North Carolina National Guard, was a 1959 graduate of New Hanover High School, and a past scoutmaster at Sunset Park United Methodist Church.

Surviving are wife, Frankie Louise Weiss Hines of the home; daughter, Brenda Louise Hines of Greenville; son, Norman Hines Jr. of Asheboro; mother, Mary Louise Merritt Hines of Wilmington; brother, Rev. James Hines of Kitrell.

The family will be at the funeral home 6-8 p.m. Sunday.

Memorials may be made to The Masonic Home for Children at Oxford, 600 College St., Oxford, N.C. 27565.

Jacksie B. Marshall
ALEXANDRIA, La. - Jacksie Brooks Marshall, 90, died Thursday, July 26, 2001, in Rapides Regional Medical Center, Alexandria, La.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Woodland Presbyterian Church USA, Pineville, La., where she was a member, with the Rev. Nancy Hendricks officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Byron A. Marshall Sr., a valedictorian of her high school class, and a member of the Pineville Garden club and the Central Louisiana Camellia Society.

Surviving is son, Byron A. Marshall Jr.

The family will be at Hixson Brothers Funeral Home, Pineville, La., 8 a.m.-noon and 1-2 p.m. Monday.

Willie T. Hussey
ASHEBORO - Willie Thomas Hussey, 87, of 840 Moffitt Road, Asheboro, formerly of 5802 Waddell's Ferry Extension, Seagrove, died Monday, July 30, 2001, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Riverside Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Harold Baker, the Rev. Charles Lassiter and the Rev. Tim Strider officiating. Burial, with military rites, will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a retired farmer and sawmiller.

Surviving are daughter, Linda Rose of Asheboro; brother, Carl Hussey of Seagrove; sisters, Stella Garner of Robbins, Essie Moore of Seagrove; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Joyce-Brady Funeral Home, Bennett, 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home.

William C. McRae Jr.
ASHEBORO - William Carl "Bill" McRae Jr., 61, of 2835 Zoo Parkway, Asheboro, died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, retired from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years and a member of First E&R United Church of Christ.

Surviving are wife, Jeanette Cooper McRae; daughter, Amenda Olivia Wilson of Asheboro; sisters, Dianne M. Smith and Judith Olivia McRae, both of Asheboro.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

Grace C. Moffitt
ASHEBORO - Grace Beddingfield Cranford Moffitt, 87, of Friends Home at Guilford, formerly of Asheboro, died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at Whittier Nursing Center at Friends Home.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Friends Home at Guilford in Greensboro, with the Rev. Russell Ward officiating. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Asheboro City Cemetery, with the Rev. Russell Ward officiating.

She was a native of Wake Forest, the widow of C.L. Cranford Jr. and John T. Moffitt, and a graduate of Asheboro High School. She formed the first music club in St. Paul, co-founded the Musical Arts Club of the North Carolina Federation of Music, Asheboro's first music club, and was chairman of the President's Council and also held other offices at the NCFMC state level. She formed the Nocturne Club and started the Nancy Alexander Junior Club. She was a member of the Randolph Book Club and a member of First Presbyterian Church in Asheboro, where she was in the choir. She was a member of the Wednesday and Friday Bridge Clubs and a board member of the Asheboro Library Association.

Surviving are son, Charles L. Cranford III of Greensboro; sister, Elizabeth Cook of Wilkesboro; two grandsons.

Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, is in charge of the arrangements.

ROBBINS - Freddie Tomas Cockman, 58, of 990 Giedon Grove Road, Stokesdale, died Monday, July 30, 2001, in Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Flint Hill Baptist Church, Robbins, with the Rev. Paul Smith officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Moore County and was a retired farmer.

Surviving are wife, Laura Darling Cockman; daughters, Tina Cockman of Pleasant Garden, Pam C. Atha of Florida; sons, David O. Anthony of Tennessee, Tommy L. Anthony, Steven R. Anthony, both of Florida; brothers, Ralph Cockman of Robbins, Leonard Cockman of Star; sisters, Luella Sullivan, Betty Smith, Janie Moore, all of Robbins, Mozzell Cooper of Olivia, Estelle Patterson of Carthage; five grandchildren.

The family will be at Kennedy Funeral Home, Robbins, 6-8 p.m. Wednesday.

WEST END - Linda S. Hartsell, 47, of 248 Doub's Chapel Road, died Monday, July 30, 2001, at her home.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Bill Monroe officiating.

She was a native of Moore County and co-owner of Resort Fire and Safety Equipment.

Surviving are husband, Tommy Hartsell; daughter, Allison H. Crissman of Cameron; son, Andy Hartsell of West End; sister, Judy Atkins of Carthage; brothers, Michael Daugherty of Murrells Inlet, S.C., Edwin Sineath of Winston-Salem, Randy Sineath of Pinebluff.

The family will be at the home 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

ASHEBORO - Lawson Jack Lowe, 85, of 4638 Dunbar Bridge Road, Asheboro, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Amity Hills Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Barry Wall officiating. Burial will be in Farmer United Methodist Church cemetery.

He was a native of Farmer, the widower of Beatrice Lowe, and a retired farmer and sawmiller.

Surviving are sons, Sydney Lowe, Dempsey Lowe, Kenneth Lowe, all of Asheboro; brother, Johnnie Lowe of Denton; sisters, Vivian Voncannon of Asheboro, Rachel Ervin of Charlotte, Joann Siler of Greensboro; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

Alma B. Campbell
CANDOR - Alma Bruton Campbell, 91, of 712 Hicks Road, died Monday, July 30, 2001, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Parsons Grove United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Peggy Duncan-Wood and the Rev. Wayne Vuncannon officiating. Burial will be in Bruton Family Cemetery.

She was a native of Montgomery County, a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and a homemaker.

Surviving are daughters, Yvonne Thompson of Mt. Gilead, Madge Craven of Candor, Caroline Fields of Conyngham, Pa., Beatrice Oursler of Green Cove Springs, Fla.; sons, Roger Campbell and "R J" Campbell, both of Candor, Lindsey Campbell of Chattanooga, Tenn., Jesse Campbell of Monroe; sisters, Bertha Matthews of Doylestown, Pa., Nancy Burgess, Vancey Scott Hall, Annie Lou Hoover, all of Candor, Beatrice Hardister of Biscoe; brother, Robert Bruton of Candor; 22 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Troy, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the home.

JACKSON SPRINGS - Georgie Evelyn McLaughlin, 90, of 832 Mill Road, died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Holly Grove Missionary Baptist Church, with Evangelist Shirley Gilles officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Surviving are daughter, Evelyn Blue of Jackson Springs; six grandchildren.

William E. Phillips
SILER CITY - William "Bill" Earl Phillips, 64, of 501 W. Sixth St., died Monday, July 30, 2001, at his home.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Thursday at First Wesleyan Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Kevin Stumbo and the Rev. Dennis Boone officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

He was a native of Chatham County, and a board member, a member of the Men's Bible Class and in charge of the church library at his church.

Surviving are wife, Barbara Coward Phillips of Siler City; son, Jerry Keith Phillips of Cary; daughters, Deanna P. Jones of Charlotte, Sheila P. Carlberg of Redondo Beach, Calif., Jennifer Phillips of Greensboro; sister, Jean Carol P. Cheek of Tabb, Va.; four grandchildren.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

Raleigh B. Arrington Jr.
LIBERTY - Raleigh Ben "Speedy" Arrington Jr., 77, of 109 E. High Ave., died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at Randolph Hospital.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery, with David Hobson officiating.

He was the widower of Carleen Kivett Arrington, a member of Liberty Friends Meeting and a retired employee of Lorillard Tobacco Company.

Surviving are sisters, Helen Edwards of Burlington, Faye Fox of Liberty; brothers, Raymond Arrington of Liberty, Curtis Arrington of Siler City.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

Alfonzo E. Martinez
STALEY - Alfonzo Elisea Martinez, 36, of 131 Graham St., died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at his home.

Funeral service will be 5 p.m. Friday, at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, with the Rev. Thurman A. Jenkins officiating. Burial will be in Chatham Memorial Park.

He was a native of San Luis Potosi, Mexico, a member of West Asheboro Church of God and was employed at Gold Kist in Siler City.

Surviving are wife, Paula Suyapa Martinez of Staley; daughter, Diana Martinez of the home; father, Luis Elisea of San Luis Potosi, Mexico; mother, Maria Martinez of San Luis Potosi, Mexico; sisters, Antonia Martinez, Marisela Martinez, both of San Luis Potosi, Mexico; brothers, Roberto Martinez, Hugo Martinez, both of San Luis Potosi, Mexico, Raul Martinez, Luis Martinez, Arturo Martinez, Alfredo Martinez, all of Siler City, Ramiro Martinez of Chicago, Ill.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

Essie "Faye" Rutzler
DENTON - Essie Mae "Faye" Hill Rutzler, 66, of Golden Street, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at Thomasville Medical Center.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, with the Rev. Lacy Cagle officiating.

She was a native of Randolph County and was a homemaker.

Surviving are husband, Robert Rutzler Sr. of the home; sons, Robert Rutzler Jr. of New London, Jim Hulin of Lexington; sister, Grace Hughes of Denton; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home from 1-2 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home of Grace Hughes, 3216 Flat Swamp Road, Denton.

SILER CITY - Blanche Moon Stone, 97, of 900 W. Dolphin St., died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at SunBridge Care Facilities, Siler City.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Loves Creek Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Roy Helms officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Alamance County, a graduate of Elon College, the Secretary of the Ladies #4 Sunday School Class at her church, a member of Brush Creek Home Demonstration Club and Residence Counselor at SunBridge Care Facilities.

Surviving are son, Edgar Dennis Stone of Siler City; daughters, Jean S. Gaines, Polly S. Willett, both of Siler City, Mamie S. Collins of Tobaccoville; brothers, Harry P. Moon of Orlando, Fla., J. D. Moon Jr. of Port Arthur, Texas; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-8 p.m. Thursday.

Willard I. Pugh
BENNETT - Willard Isaac Pugh, 80, of 344 Randolph St., died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at Chatham Hospital, Siler City.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Bennett Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tim Strider and the Rev. Robert Webb officiating. Burial, with military honors, will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Chatham County, a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, and retired after 28 years as parts manager for Gate City Motors of Greensboro.

Surviving are wife, Lucy Phillips Pugh of the home; sons, Lanny Darrell Pugh, Ronnie Pugh, both of Bennett; daughter, Lili Onufryk of Clark Summit, Pa.; two grandsons.

The family will be at Joyce-Brady Funeral Home, Bennett, 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

Juanita Thompson
CARTHAGE - Juanita Thompson, 78, of McNeill Street, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Beulah Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Shawn Dobbs and the Rev. Jim Boyte officiating. Burial will be in Hamer Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Mt. Gilead.

She was a native of Montgomery County and retired as a clerical secretary with Dr. H. M. Morrison in Pinehurst.

Surviving are brothers, W. M. Thompson of Jackson Springs, Hubert Thompson of the home, Ralph M. Thompson of Carthage.

The family will be at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage, 7-9 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home.

LEXINGTON - Robert "Bob" Eugene Scott, 54, of Ervin Drive, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at Lexington Memorial Hospital.

No service will be held.

He was a native of Rowan County, a service technician for Focke Packaging, a U.S. Marie Corps veteran, and was a member of the Bass Anglers Association.

Surviving are wife, Jean Trollinger Scott of the home; son, Anthony "Bubba" Scott of Pittsboro; daughter, Sharon S. Phagan of Asheboro; sisters, Bonnie, Connie, and Donna, all of South Carolina; five grandchildren.

The family will be at the home, 730 Ervin Drive, Lexington.

Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington, is in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the donor's favorite charity.

BISCOE - Erma Lee Harrington, 79, of 405 Mill St., died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital, Troy.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Faith Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Martin E. Davis and the Rev. David Boroughs officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Moultrie, Ga., and a retired nursing assistant.

Surviving are daughter, Lisa Mashburn of Star; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

The family will be Phillips Funeral Home, Star, 7-9 p.m. Friday, other times at the home of the daughter, 248 Mashburn Drive, Star.
