JULIAN - Margaret R. Barker, of 7196 Bobby Jean Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Gilmore Memorial Park.

There will be no visitation.

The family requests no flowers.

Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, is in charge of the arrangements.

Herman E. Patterson
CARTHAGE - Herman E. "Sparky" Patterson, 64, of 370 Plank Road, formerly of 384 Star Ridge Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Summer Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Joseph K. Peters and the Rev. Max Williams officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Moore County, employed with Hudson's Gulf Station in Vass, and retired from Ingersoll-Rand after 20 years.

Surviving are wife, Wanda Sue "Suzie" Patterson; daughter, Wanda Denise Williams of Carthage; sons, James E. "Eddie" Patterson of Charlotte, Jimmy Lee Patterson of Carthage; sister, Brenda Garner of Carthage; brother, Jerry Garner of Carthage; five grandchildren.

The family will be at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage, 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

William J. Smith
CADIZ, Ky. - William J. Smith, 80, of 728 Apple Valley Drive, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2001, at his home.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at House Cemetery in Trigg County, Ky., with the Rev. Jack Larwa officiating.

He was a native of Charlotte, a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, a retired coach and teacher at Asheboro High School, a member of Retired Teachers Association and was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving are wife, Betty Irene Shumate Smith of the home; mother Rosalee House Smith of Charlotte; daughters, Debbie McBride of Cadiz, Ky., Linda Marshall of Greensboro; son, William Doug Smith of Asheboro; brothers, Horace Lee Smith, Bobby Smith, both of Charlotte; sisters, Carol Turner, Evelyn Donohue, both of Charlotte; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Goodwin Funeral Home, Cadiz, Ky., is in charge of the arrangements.

Lucy W. Kearns
ASHEBORO - Lucy Wright Kearns, 83, of 2138 Zoo Parkway, Asheboro, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, at Asheboro Health & Rehabilitation.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with Dr. Boyd Stokes and the Rev. David Hatcher officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Shepherd United Methodist Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Star, a graduate of Elon College, a member of First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for 30 years and was former president of the Women's Society. She was formerly employed with Farm Security Administration and Asheboro City and Randolph County schools.

Surviving is husband, Baxter E. Kearns.

The family will be at the funeral home from 2-2:45 p.m. Sunday.

Stella J. Moran
ASHEBORO - Stella Jones Moran, 80, of 3734 Grantville Lane, Asheboro, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at Clapp's Nursing Home in Asheboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Antioch Christian Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Gerald Ward officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Surviving are son, Joe Moran of Ramseur; daughter, Joyce Brown of Asheboro; brother, Aubrey Jones of High Point; sisters, Virginia Strickland, Shelby Pyrtle, both of High Point; four grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren.

Mary W. Burgess
RAMSEUR - Mary Wood Burgess, 83, of 1975 N.C. 22 South, died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Faith Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Gary Moger and the Rev. Kevin Franklin officiating. Burial will be in Parks Cross Roads Christian Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Surry County and retired from the John Plant.

Surviving are daughters, Nancy Allred and Wilma Ray Kivett, both of Ramseur, Melanie Sabins of Durham; sister, Vera Marion of Vass; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, 7-9 p.m. Friday.

Ruth D. Brown
HIGH POINT - Ruth Davis Brown, 91, of Edgar Road, Sophia, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Marlboro Friends Meeting, where she was a member, with the Rev. John Sides and the Rev. Dale Matthews officiating.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Arthur Roscoe Brown, retired from Globe Furniture and served as a recording clerk of the monthly meeting and clerk of Ministry and Council at her church.

The family will be at Harold C. Davis Funeral Home, High Point, 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, other times at the home of Edith Davis.

Memorials may be made to Marlboro Friends Meeting Cemetery Fund, 2668 Marlboro Church Road, Sophia, N.C. 27350.

Rev. Monroe E. Siler Jr.
SILER CITY - The Rev. Monroe E. Siler Jr., 69, of 85 Glosson Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at his home.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Gees Grove A.M.E. Zion Church, with the Rev. Allen Moore officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Chatham County, a U.S. Army veteran, a retired truck driver for Townsend Poultry, a member of American Legion Post # 277 and a member of the Tri-Gospel Union Male Chorus.

Surviving are wife, Dora Siler; daughters, Dale Siler, Deborah Farrington, both of Siler City, Karen A. Reed of Philadelphia, Pa.; sisters, Kathryn Harrison and Shirley Wooding, both of Roanoke, Va., Roberta Rose of Brooklyn, N.Y.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the church 7-8 p.m. Friday.

Farrar Funeral Home, Siler City, is in charge of arrangements.

Brenda L. Mitchell
BROWNS SUMMIT - Brenda Lamb Mitchell, 52, of Yanceyville Road, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, at her home.

Memorial service will be 4 p.m. Saturday at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Service, Greensboro.

She was a native of Guilford County.

Surviving are husband, David N. Mitchell of the home; son, Erik Ensley of Greensboro; mother, Virginia "Jean" Lamb of Robbins; sisters, JoAnne Simpson of Asheboro, Patricia Beck of Lexington; brother, Eddie Lamb of Trinity.

The family will be at the funeral home following the service, other times at the home.

Martha H. Wentz
GASTONIA - Martha Hunter Wentz, 89, of 911 South St., died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Chandler Grove United Methodist Church, New London, where she was a member, with the Rev. Derald Smith officiating. Burial will be in Norwood Cemetery.

She was a native of Stanly County, the widow of C.A. Wentz, a member of Randolph Chapter #210 Order of Eastern Star and had attended Women's College in Greensboro. She was a member of the Home Extension Club, Badin Lake Women's Club, Stanly County Art Guild, a volunteer at Mt. Visa Nursing Home in Denton and a mentor at New London Elementary School.

Surviving are son, Dr. Charles H. Wentz; sister, Nancy White Hunter; one grandchild; one great-grandson; niece, Mary Ann Fuller Lore of Gastonia, with whom she had lived.

The family will be at the church 12:30-1 p.m. Saturday.

Greene Funeral Service, Gastonia, is in charge of arrangements.

Gurlie A. Nicholson
ASHEBORO - Gurlie A. Nicholson, 83, of 893 Moffitt Road, Asheboro, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at Asheboro Health & Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Greater St. John Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. J.F. Kearns officiating. Burial will be in St. Mark United Methodist Church Cemetery in Farmer.

He was a native of Richmond County, a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a retired employee of Union Carbide, Asheboro.

Surviving are daughters, Janice Funderberg, Rosalee Small, both of Farmer; son, Ausbury Nicholson of Asheboro; sisters, Ann Buie of Ellerbe, Rosa Lee Hunter of Wadesboro, Ga.; brother, Bennie Dove of Ellerbe; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the church 30 minutes prior to the service on Sunday.

Lomax Price
RANDLEMAN - Lomax Price, 60, of 9026 U.S. 220 Business North, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at St. Peter's United Methodist Church.

Surviving are wife, Mary J. Price of the home; daughter, Yutinna Price of New York; sisters, Lois Cooper of Asheboro, Dora Price of High Point; two grandchildren.

Gailes Funeral Home, Asheboro, is in charge of arrangements.

Ruby B. Stevens
RANDLEMAN - Ruby Evelyn Brown Stevens, 79, of 386 Worthville Road, died Friday, Sept. 28, 2001, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at First Wesleyan Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Don Hurlburt officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County and retired from Commonwealth Hosiery Mill after 32 years.

Surviving are husband, Dwight K. Stevens; sisters, Dot Flanary of Randleman, Thelma Royal of Archdale.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, 7-9 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home of Dot Flanary, 434 High Point St., Randleman.

Alva L. Freeman
SEAGROVE - Alva Lee Freeman, 77, of 3460 U.S. 220 Alternate North, died Friday, Sept. 28, 2001, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Union Grove Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Ron Copple and the Rev. Grady Blakely officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military graveside rites.

He was a native of Montgomery County, a teacher of the Adult Men's Sunday School class at his church, a World War II veteran and POW, a member of VFW Post #9881 and retired from Union Carbide.

Surviving are wife, Elizabeth Covington Freeman of the home; daughter, Jill Esque of Greensboro; son, Alva Lee Freeman Jr. of Monroe; sister, Faye Patille of Greensboro; brothers, Paul E. Freeman of Gerton, the Rev. Tracy W. Freeman of Collinsville, Va.; four grandchildren.

The family will be at Phillips Funeral Home, Star, 7-9 p.m. Saturday.

SILER CITY - Wheatley Staley Graves, 74, of 3618 Lambert Mill Road, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Surviving are husband, Alfred Graves; sons, Alfred Graves of Ramseur, Richard Graves of Liberty; daughters, Phyllis Graves of Asheboro, Vanessa Isley of Siler City; sisters, Aretha Staley of Greensboro, Jessie Jackson of Maryland; brothers, Thaddeus Staley Jr., Samuel Staley, both of Ramseur; three grandchildren.

SILER CITY - Kay McDaniel Holt, 64, of 1317 S. Second Ave., died Friday, Sept. 28, 2001, at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Rives Chapel Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Larry Soblotne and the Rev. Gerald Bridges officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Edgefield County, S.C., and retired from Belk, Siler City.

Surviving are husband, Bryce Holt of Siler City; sons, Ted McDaniel Jr. of Rougemont, Randy McDaniel of Siler City; daughter, Karen Garner of Asheboro; stepsons, Mike Holt of Siler City, Bobby Holt of Asheboro; stepdaughter, Brenda Oldham of Gibsonville; five grandsons.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home.

CARTHAGE - John C. Barrett Jr., 65, died Friday, Sept. 28, 2001.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Harvest Church of God, with the Rev. William Meares officiating. Burial will be in Cross Hill Cemetery.

He was a native of Moore County, a retired Carthage Volunteer fireman, a retired employee of the Moore County A.B.C. Board and the operator of Barrett's Yard Service.

Surviving are wife, Hilda Smith Barrett; daughters, Marcia Presley, Iris Spivey, Beth Tidwell, Lorraine Davis, Janice Hardy, all of Carthage; sons, Allen Hardy, Charles Hardy Jr., Doug Hardy, all of Carthage; sister, Janet Hatcher of Roxboro; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage, 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday.

Donald B. Strayhorn
SALISBURY - Donald Burns Strayhorn, 85, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Summersett Funeral Home, Salisbury, with Dan Erranton and Steve Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Rowan Memorial Park Mausoleum.

He was a native of High Point, retired from Southern Railroad as an engineer after 40 years, served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and was a member of West Innes Street Church of Christ.

Surviving are wife, Charlotte Verne Odrosky Strayhorn; daughters, Val S. Erranton of Dickson, Tenn., Connie S. Nelson of Roswell, Ga.; brothers, Thornton Strayhorn of Asheboro, William Strayhorn of Columbia, S.C., Darrell Strayhorn of Oxford, Miss.; sisters, Jacqueline S. Davidson of Asheboro, Golda S. Fontaine of North Abington, Mass.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 1-3 p.m. Saturday.
